Posted: 31 Jan 2022 04:15 PM PST there are so many concepts i don't even know how to start. i would like to learn linux and understand it clearly, this way i don't need to rely on constant external help and will have a better experience. it must be really handy to be fluent with it and truly know all it's potential, since the idea of a fully open system you have entire power over seems promising. currently on opensuse, they say arch is very good to learn but i can't even install it, too low level. How do you get scaling to work? Do I just need to update the right drivers? [Ubuntu 21.10] Posted: 01 Feb 2022 07:27 AM PST
I tried using fractional 125% scaling but it was quite blurry. Fortunately google Chrome has it's own scaling for webpages but that doesn't really fix anything in terms of Ubuntu. [link] [comments] |

Complete Noob Running Arch Linux (with help) Posted: 01 Feb 2022 06:59 AM PST I'm a Linux noob. A big noob. I've tried various distros over the past few months but eventually started to migrate towards Manjaro and Endeavour OS. I've seen loads of elitist posts regarding Arch and to follow the official installation guide. The problem with that guide, it expects an mid to advanced level (too much) in terms of understanding and learning. Which, I appreciate the elitists will say people should have in order to deal with issues etc when things break. However, I just wanted to install Arch and had the help of the EZArcher installer to do it. Was super-easy and set it up same as my Endeavour OS installation on another laptop. Just saying, if complete noobs want to try Arch there are ways out there to do it. So, I can add Arch to the list of distros I've tried. Did I install it the way the Arch elitists would want? No. Do I care? Nope. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Feb 2022 06:42 AM PST Hello, I recently switched to Gentoo, and am ricing my desktop on dwm, so far I got everything, except qt applications like dolphin, nomacs and co. I wasn't able to achieve this even when I used to be on arch and I followed the gentoo wiki too for this, but the result was null. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |

Installing all programs on a second drive Posted: 31 Jan 2022 05:50 PM PST I only have 256 gb in my laptop left for Linux can I use an external ssd to store all my programs and games and other bigger files? I'm finally making the leap to dualboot fedora [link] [comments] |
.sh files don't open by clicking Posted: 01 Feb 2022 05:04 AM PST i made a basic .sh file and i can run it with the ./name.sh command. however clicking on it will give this error:
command is supposed to open an executable and it works very well when opening from terminal. however, clicking on it won't. openSUSE Tumbleweed, KDE. wrote using vim and also followed this tutorial to grant me permissions. P.S: should i report this to kde too or it's just my fault and not the DE? [link] [comments] |
[Gentoo] Steam flatpak launch errror Posted: 01 Feb 2022 01:11 AM PST EDIT: nvm I fixed it by giving a proper look at the nvidia and xorg pages on gentoo wiki Hi, this is my first time using gentoo and I installed Steam from flatpak as I prefer it that way, but when I try to launch it this happens. I did not compile my kernel, instead I used a precompiled one. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Feb 2022 12:55 AM PST I read the about section from Neovim page and I was wondering if it is used for an special language, or for some special area/job. Also, I've seen really nice ricing in r/unixporn and I'd like to know the most common plugins and TUIs/GUIs for nvim. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 01 Feb 2022 12:11 AM PST I am currently using microsoft edge (in linux yep you read it right). What I love about it is its performance is surprisingly good. Its sleeping tabs feature helps a lot when you have to open many tabs. But I really don't want to use edge cuz microsoft bad lol. So I want a web browser which have good performance, not too high resource usage like chrome. Requirements:

Posted: 31 Jan 2022 09:44 PM PST Hi, I've been running Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (dual booted with windows) for a couple of weeks, and today I've decided to remove ubuntu from the dual boot (in order to eventually install Pop!_OS). However, when I go to disk management to remove the Ubuntu partition, I noticed that I have two recovery partitions and two EFI partitions. Now I suspect that these were created when I dual booted Ubuntu and created separate partitions for root, boot, etc... in an admittedly poor decision when I could've just used the automatic ubuntu installer. How can I remove these extra partitions? Because right clicking it only brings up "help" and nothing else. I have managed to figure out that Disk 0 Partition 5 is window's recovery partition, so i need to delete Disk 0 partition 6... however i still do not know which redundant EFI partition i need to delete. Any help is greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Looking for easiest way to set up File Sharing on My network Posted: 31 Jan 2022 08:52 PM PST I have 4 computers. I do a lot of downloading on one constantly and I would like to access those files from my other computers. I am Running MX Linux KDE on my main System. I have my music and travel laptop running Debian SID MATEAnd I have another laptop running Manjaro KDE. My MX Linux is sharing folders fine not sure if it was just out the box with the ability. But I just click share and it was on my network. My other OS's not so much. Samba is installed SB4k as well. I have Caja share installed. They can open the files from MX but I can't share back. Let's just start fresh… where do I start…. What do I need to install or change to make this happen? I have tried for 3 days to figure it out but let's just start from the beginning. Where do I start? Sorry for the long post just frustrated when I feel like this should be so much simpler. [link] [comments] |
Which archiving software/format is more future-proof? (Win)RaR or 7zip? Posted: 01 Feb 2022 02:15 AM PST I'm archiving from time to time some big files into 2GiB pieces fully encrypted (headers too) with rar on gnu/linux. This archives are supposed to be long-term archives as long as possible- just for the case I'll need to unpack them to restore the stuff. I'm not using compression, I just want to pack them for other reasons. Now my big question is: which format (.rar or .7z) is more future-proof and will probably still exists in 20 years? rar is a little bit older than 7zip, but 7zip is (F?)OSS, so I think it could survive longer ... but rar is also very popular (shareware) but who knows, if rar will one day say its really premium-software? wouldn't matter, if the old rar software is still Shareware, so unpacking the .rar files should always be possible, even in the worst case? Maybe you have other pros/cons :) I working until with .sh scripts who are packing my files/folders I hope for your ideas/inspiriations :) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jan 2022 04:00 PM PST So I just bought a laptop and installed Linux on it. I did it because I believe in privacy, but facing an uphill battle from the start is a price for liberty which I don't know I can practically pay. Just installing Linux took me eight hours and I was only able to do it with the help of nice strangers. I now open Libre Office and... are you kidding me? The resolution of the text looks many times worse than the resolution of the commands in the top bar or any other text on my screen. The layout looks like it's ten years behind Microsoft Office. It doesn't even have simple things like the navigation sidebar which shows the headings (sure, it has that on the right, but it's bloated and blocks the text of what you're actually writing. Before I give up and go back to Windows (because my job requires a decent word processor at least), I just wanted to know if somebody can recommend a decent non-Microsoft and non-LibreOffice alternative? Very much appreciated:) [link] [comments] |

Raspberry Pi; have to unplug and replug HDMI tv for it to work Posted: 01 Feb 2022 12:09 AM PST So, I have a Raspberry Pi 4, 64 bit, running raspbian. KDE is the DE. When booting up, the colour screen shows, then some of the terminal-like startup commands run, then... the monitor just gives a black/grey screen. If I unplug and replug in the HDMI cord, everything works. Though obviously not the worst problem, it is annoying. How can I fix? What is going wrong here? Is this a xorg thing? [link] [comments] |
