Bought an SD card and can't connect it to laptop

    Posted: 02 Feb 2022 10:50 PM PST

Bought a 64gb SD card.. I run Ubuntu.

I have etcher and etcher or 'disks' can't read the card.

Guy at the shop said I need to 'format' the SD card. Not sure what he means or how to do it.

SD card slot works as last SD card was readable.

    Anyone have any advice?

Is there a way to "save" a linux install to be able to reproduce it from a freshly formatted disk?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2022 11:34 PM PST

For context, I successfully installed Arch Linux after a lot of struggling, and then evenentually got the bios to recognise Grub and boot into Arch. The end result was a total mess of devices mounted in the wrong place, multiple fstab files, multiple boot efi directories, etc.

I decided to do it again with what I had learned and while it was easier the second time, it was still a lot of pain.

Now that I have it installed exactly how I want, is there a way to backup or save exactly how it is set up so that in the future I can at least get back to a clean install without having to start over? Or does that involve manually writing a script to do it?

Transfer Files between ubuntu to windows

    Posted: 02 Feb 2022 02:02 PM PST

    Hi All

    Absolute Linux noob here.

Need to transfer some files from ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS to Windows machine. these files needs to be emailed to 3rd party.

solution so far i have found states i need to install SSH on the box and transfer from their.

as this is a Production box residing in DMZ i am not sure if this is right approach.

can someone please advise what is the best approach and if i do proceed with SSH approach how can i shut it down once completed.

thank you and please be patient as my understanding is close to 0 with ubuntu and i am the only sys admin who has access. the person who set this up has left.

EDIT - thanks guys. was able to achieve this

Is there an easy way to remove files that are stored elsewhere?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2022 07:34 AM PST

So basically over the years and adding storage I have a lot of files that are in multiple places that I am trying to tidy up.

Is there any quick way, a program or the like where if a file exists on say Drive1 it will remove it from Drive2?

So all that will be left on Drive2 are files NOT on Drive1?

    dual boot question

    Posted: 03 Feb 2022 07:16 AM PST

Hello! I've been using arch on an old laptop for a while now and want to finally put it on my nice laptop. It has a 1Tb and 2Tb NVMe SSD and my uni requires some stuff thats much easier to use on actual windows than on a VM. So my question is if i install arch on the drive windows isnt on, would dual booting be as simple as switching which drive to boot in BIOS?

    Am I missing something?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2022 06:46 PM PST

I switched to Linux mint a few weeks ago. I am enjoying it as I have noticed my computer is running better. Whenever I try to do anything like installing programs or drivers I always get errors and have trouble.

I google them and someone has posted on forum how to fix it. I copy in the commands into terminal and then things work. Half the time I have no idea what commands do and I never know how that person knew how to fix the error.

Is this a common experience? If it were not for kind internet folk I would not be able to set up anything. Am I missing some fundamental knowledge of how linux works? Or is this a normal learning curve?

    Thanks.

How do I write or create a txt in root folder in Manjaro Dolphin?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2022 01:56 AM PST

I cannot move or create files in my XORG config folder which is required in order for me to enable freesync and create an AMD config file. Why does Arch not specify this issue? It seems obvious but the page for xorg config and freesync does not say anything on how to attain permission. pkexec dolphin did not work either...

Audio goes from 0% to 37% even when it is set to go up by only 5% [bspwm]

    Posted: 03 Feb 2022 05:32 AM PST

I decided to change from KDE Plasma to bspwm because it uses less resources, but Im having all sorts of problems, one of them is that pressing the volume up button raises the volume by a irregular amount: 0% > 37% > 46% > 53% > 58% and so on. Im using the default example polybar, pipewire and set on sxhkd:

    XF86AudioLowerVolume
    amixer set Master 5%- unmute

    XF86AudioRaiseVolume
    amixer set Master 5%+ unmute

When I use the mouse whell on the polybar's audio thing it goes up and down by 5% exactly.

    Newbie on Linux

    Posted: 02 Feb 2022 08:38 PM PST

So... I'm interested on learning/using Linux, aside from what distro I should use, what should I learn on linux? Aside from basic commands and file hierarchy. What should I really know about?

Also I'm planning on being a Linux admin on the future.

Any help or inputs/criticism would much be appreciated.

Black screen after GRUB on MX Linux

    Posted: 03 Feb 2022 04:46 AM PST

After a week or 2 of using MX it suddenly boots up to a black screen after GRUB. I tried to add nomodeset in GRUB and it suddenly worked but only displayed the screen at 800x600. I also tested it with Windows and the GPU works as intended so I know my GPU doesn't have any hardware problems. I also know that MX is running because my keyboard lit up after I typed my password just like before. I also tried booting a live USB but it also had the same results.

    OS: MX Linux 21

    Processor: Intel Core i3-9100F

    GPU: AMD R9 380

Can anyone please help with a fatal grub error when trying to dual-boot?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2022 04:44 AM PST

Hoping someone might be able to help with this been trying for a few days. I am trying to dual-boot and have installed Ubuntu 20.4.3 desktop from flash drive using Rufus (primarily Running Windows 11). (Partition scheme GPT, Target System UEFI, HP ENVY Laptop 13... Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-10210U CPU). I shrunk the C: volume to make sufficient unallocated space.

Everything worked fine for a day, but then errored and I tried reinstalling as all other fixes didn't seem to help. Now I am receiving the following fatal error: 'executing grub install dev nvme0n1 failed' which is preventing the install.

So I tried boot-repair (from live USB). But it does not display the option for "recommended repair". In the boot repair report there are a few errors which don't make sense to me. The Boot Info Summary states: "No known boot loader is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda". But it's UEFI so not sure on this one. In the report is has the following errors: " Unknown BootLoader" & " no block devices found".

The second thing I have noticed is that Ubuntu installer partition tool is showing different (specifically more) partitions than Windows disk management. Windows looks fine, but the Ubuntu tool doesn't seem to be recognising the unallocated space and is finding more partitions. All seems bizarre.

Would be the BIGGEST help if anyone had any ideas or could point me in the right direction.

I've done two 'AskUbuntu' posts which provide a bit more, including link to the boot repair paste bin, if that helps: fatal error / partitioning issue.

A Cry for Help from a Wanna-be User

    Posted: 02 Feb 2022 09:07 PM PST

I love everything about Linux: what it stands for, the freedom, the privacy, the culture, etc. I want to be able to use Linux as my daily driver on my laptop and desktop.

I have an unhealthy relationship with windows. It has gotten to be borderline paranoia every time I use windows (which seems to be justified….right? Lol).

I have used PopOS, Ubuntu, PureOS, Fedora, and probably a few others. I have used them for several weeks each, but issues always came up which caused me to either abruptly stop using it or do a fresh install. I utilized resources and communities online for assistance, but the issue always ends up not getting fixed. Whether it is driver issues or software issues, it is continuously giving me issues.

I have found that my experience is only good with just continuous web surfing…basically the same use-case as a Chromebook (minus android application usage). It's kind of bothering me at this point.

I know the command line really well, but my knowledge in how/why it works appears to be limited. Every video I find on YouTube that talks about Linux for Beginners just talks about the command line. I love the command line and I recognize the power behind it…but when it comes to cool things to do with Linux or every day usage, I just don't come across many videos.

I am curious to see what others have to say about my situation? Any videos or books you like? I'm desperate lol

    Best distro for battery life?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2022 04:28 AM PST

Hey guys, I used to use Linux on desktop a few years ago, mainly used Manjaro.

    I recently purchased this laptop

    https://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/lenovo-v15-g2-alc-ryzen-5-5500u-8gb-512gb-15.6-inch-windows-10-laptop-82kd002luk/version.asp

I'm currently running windows 11 but miss Linux, the battery life on this machine isn't massively impressive but it isn't that bad, what distro would be best for similar battery performance to windows?

    Cheers

USB formatting in a Windows-compatible manner on Linux?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2022 12:06 AM PST

So. I formatted my 8GB USB stick to FAT32, and it seems the flash drive wasn't compatible with a few Windows machines. I do not know what the message was, as I don't have a Windows device, and I didn't try to use it on one.

Should I have done NTFS? How can I make fully sure my flash sticks are compatible with Windows?

    Steps I did:

    1. lsblk to pick USB as /dev/sda (main OS drive is nvme)
    2. sudo mkfs.vfat /dev/sda
    3. Copied .pdf files over and checked that they work.
    4. Sent it off to failures on Windows devices.
