Simple Questions and Help Thread - Week of January 2nd, 2022

    Posted: 02 Jan 2022 03:21 PM PST

Welcome to the Simple Questions thread, for questions that don't need their own thread, or to stand in for "Help" submissions. We still recommend you use the search, FAQ/Wiki on the sidebar, or even a Bing search before asking. Also please post general tech support related questions on /r/techsupport. Be sure to check out our new help subreddit, /r/WindowsHelp

Some examples of questions to ask:

    • Is this super cheap Windows key legitimate? (probably not)

    • How can I install Windows 11?

    • Can you recommend a program to play music?

    • How do I get back to the old Sound Control Panel?

Sorting by New is recommend and is the default.

I am not a bot, this was not posted automatically.

Be sure to check out the Windows 11 Launch Megathread and also the Windows 11 FAQ posts, it likely has the answers to your Windows 11 questions already!

How long will Windows 10 be supported for those PCs not eligible to upgrade to Windows 11?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2022 05:06 PM PST

My PC is quite old but I like it a lot. It turns out that it's not eligible for Windows 11. I'm wondering how long will Windows 10 be around. My main concern is security updates.

    Resource Monitor Loop

    Posted: 02 Jan 2022 05:48 PM PST

I got on my computer to play games. I rage and hit my keyboard. Yes I know, stupid. I go back to the game I was playing but it doesn't work. I realize many games weren't opening as well as other applications. I go into Resource Monitor to see what is up and Resource Monitor itself is suspended. I go to Restore windows and that is suspended. I have access to Task Manager and I can see the applications open, suspend, and promptly close. I cant get into safe mode either since System Config utility is also, big surprise, suspended.

EDIT: I fixed it by restoring to a previous system restore point by going through the Windows Recovery Environment.

Windows 11 Won't Sleep, Shut Down or Restart

    Posted: 02 Jan 2022 08:25 PM PST

As title suggests, I need to physically hold my PCs power button to shut off the computer. The sleep/shut down/restart functionality just shuts off the screen and the computer still runs. If I move mouse or touch keyboard, it was the screen and windows is stuck on the lock screen. No error messages or popups for any of the operations either. I migrated my boot from HDD to SSD today and had to redo the Fat32 EFI partition cause it wouldn't boot after removing my HDD, but now that works and I'm experiencing this issue... There doesn't seem to be another single article in existence online about my situation either

    Windows 11 bricked my PC

    Posted: 02 Jan 2022 10:05 PM PST

I was VERY lucky to be able to revert the install and go back to windows 10. Here's what happened:

First things first: I built this PC in 2018 with relatively high specs. 1080 Ti, 32 RAM, i7-7820X, Samsung 960 EVOs. It's still a great PC and performs well.

Yesterday, it let me know that windows 11 was available, so I started the whole update process. When it booted windows 11 for the first time, I was greeted with a BSoD saying "whea_uncorrectable_error", which in and of itself doesn't sound ideal. Tried rebooting 2 or 3 times with the bare minimum hardware connected, still nothing. Made it to the login screen once, entered my PIN, and again, "whea_uncorrectable_error" immediately. This "enter PIN and crash right away" happened about 30 times, because I'm a stubborn sonuvabitch. I then decided to re-seat every component in my PC (RAM, CPU, GPU, SSD) and clean everything with a brush and a vacuum. Everything looked pristine. Rebooted, crashed. All fans on, all lights on, so everything was working, but still, "whea_uncorrectable_error". My best guess is something to do with the GPU, whenever I entered my PIN it ever so slightly changed the resolution and that's when the crashes happened. So I uninstalled the graphics driver in safe mode to see what would happen. This time I made it into windows and briefly saw that little "Hi" message, and boom, crash. At that point it was clear that I needed to go back to windows 10.

So, safe mode it is, again. Problem is, safe mode is garbage because you can't create a bootable windows 10 USB stick in SM for some reason. After endless reboots in safe mode and normal mode, I finally made it into windows 11, only to crash again about 30 seconds in, not enough time to create a USB boot disk. Oh and also, the "Go back to windows 10" option wasn't available. It just wasn't there under System Restore.

Got lucky again (I'd been at for 5 hours on a sunday morning at this point), got in and managed to create a USB boot disk. Rebooted, installed windows 10 and now everything works perfectly.

So I suppose what I'm trying to say is: What the hell? My PC feels pretty standard, nothing too fancy, and it has been working like a champion for 4 years without a single issue. Can anyone tell me what the hell happened? Apparently "whea_uncorrectable_error" is a hardware thing, but I am typing this post on my PC right now, and everything is fine under windows 10.

I have no reason to upgrade to 11 anyway, so I won't. But what a mission that was.

Ethernet (Kernel Debugger) randomly appeared?? How and why, and how do I remove it if needed?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2022 09:28 PM PST

    Windows 10.

NEVER seen it before. But noticed my internet dropped out out of nowhere, and then I saw this when I went to reset my adapters and try to fix the connection (my lap top was also offline as I think it was just a network (cable) glitch) However I noticed that network device I had not seen before.

Where could it have come from and why? Virus, hacker etc? seems odd to just show up like that.

File icon change into software used

Hi! Happy New Year hope all of you have a good day.

So i was trying several mp3 players ; groove music, MusicBee, Amarok. Then i realise something was changing, the icon. The file icon change to the mp3 software that i set to default, is there anyways to change the icon or to costomize it? Thanks.

Does microsoft family record chrome searches?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2022 08:46 PM PST

I was wondering if Microsoft family features monitors chrome history and searches, or if it doesn't because chrome is not a Microsoft product. I know it records searches in Edge.

(NOOB) Windows SANDBOX - Is mapping folder a WEAKPOINT?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2022 01:02 PM PST

I do work on Fiverr and receive tons of PDFs from clients which I want to open in a safe environment.

I want to map my Downloads folder to the Sandbox. That way I can open PDFs from there without having to copy and paste the file from my main PC to Sandbox.

If the PDF turns out to be a particularly nasty malware/virus/hack, couldn't it find its way to the main PC through this mapped drive?

I've read that breakouts are possible so if it is, then wouldn't this be a weak point? So then would it be safer for me to not map the folder, and just copy and paste the file?

Also, is it safe for me to log into Fiverr through the Sandbox? I am thinking not because the malware can somehow gain access to my log in credentials.

Should I upgrade to Windows 11 right now?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2022 08:59 AM PST

I have had the message to upgrade to Windows 11 since it was available, but I am a bit hesitant to download it because it might be still unstable and cause un-needed problems. My device is an Acer Swift SF514-54GT so should I just go ahead and upgrade or wait a bit? Also another question, do the Windows 10 files get deleted/replaced with the Windows 11 one or I will have OS files of both?
