    Looking for a school laptop.

    Looking for a school laptop.

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 02:16 AM PST

Looking for a school laptop with a decent battery life, nice sharp looking screen and nice build quality in the keyboard and trackpad. Emphasis on decent trackpad.

Subjects I take need me to do a lot of writing and use of it, and computer should be responsive.

Budget is under $3000 New Zealand Dollars, which does sound like a bit, but tech can be unreasonably expensive here.

Looking to do some light gaming from time to time, not going for any extremely long sessions of over two hours. Games I would be looking to play would be sort of like GTA V, Cities: Skylines (with around maybe 100 mods), Hitman, maybe, Ghost Recon Wildlands or Verdun or Red Dead Redemption 2 (may be a far shot) or Beam.NG - at 1080P, high, at above 50fps, preferably.

Laptops I have been looking into is the ASUS Vivobook Pro 15 OLED M3500QC Ryzen 9-5900HK with 4GB RTX3050.

Large fan noise and "edgy" aesthetics preferably avoided.

Zephyrus G14 is out of stock literally everywhere here, fyi

    Suggest a laptop webdev/gaming

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 07:15 PM PST

Hi so currently I have a 6y old MSI laptop with 4cores 8 threads and 970m card. It's a good laptop the hinges were shit untill I made em less stiff. As I already know msi from inside out (literally lol can swap thermal paste in 10mins probably at this point). I'm looking at MSI GF65 thin with 3060 and i5-10500h. It looks okay for the 900usd price (which I can buy without VAT so it will come even cheaper) SSD and ram can be upgraded so It's obsolete in this question. I do web dev work usually with Vscode or other ide's. And some gaming from time to time (usually indie games, modded Mc or just new games with story) I would defiantly think about a more expensive laptop but I already have an ps5 for litteraly gaming so Im thinking that this one would be enough for when I want to game and amazing (from the specifications perspective) for my web development work. I'm up for a discussion and you ideas tho!

I need a very beefy and portable machine, that does visual design stuff (3D etc) very good as well as very demanding Music Production tasks, 4000€ limit ?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 01:15 AM PST

Thinking about the maxed out M1 MacBook (with 1Tb)… but there's so much more out there. The point is, i want something that's as good with audio as the MacBook/Macs in General are. Is something really out there ? Regarding latency/stability etc…

finding a machine that's better at blender / 3D rendering for example isn't really hard, I get that. But the point is it should be very good in most of the aspects. It should be worth this tremendous investment… which it certainly is for me 👌

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
300 Euros, I live in Spain
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      It would be completely fine
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Priorities are Performance > Battery Life > Build Quality
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Its not really important to me
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      15 inches or higher
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Its going to be mostly use to handle documents and to store files
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      Nope
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
As long as it doesn't feel too cheap its fine

Graphic Design Student & Gaming Laptop

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 05:20 PM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      $1250 USD
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Preferably new, but I will consider refurbished/used if from a trusted site or store
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Priorities are Performance > Build Quality > Battery Life
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
I plan on using at a desk, so I am not too worried about weight or thinness.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      15 inches or higher
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I want to run Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign out of the Adobe Suite for school. Affinity Designer & Affinity Photo too. I also would like to play Deep Rock Galactic and perhaps Rust.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
60 FPS preferably for most games and normal settings preferably but I will play low settings for some game if necessary.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Preferably not a plastic, finnicky quality build.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I can go over budget by like $50 - $100 but this is a technology grant from my college I receive in 2 weeks. Any special deals on laptops that end before 2 weeks won't be helpful.

Lenovo legion 7 vs Asus SCAR ??? WHAT TO PICK???

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 02:50 AM PST

My head is about to explode trying to make a decision..

So I've found a legion 7 with an RTX 3070, and an AMD ryzen 5800H along with the WQXGA screen@165hz for $2400 CAD brand new

But then I found an open but barely used ASUS scar 15 for the exact same price. The SCAR has an RTX 3080 with ryzen 5900HX but a 300hz FHD screen rather them the QHD. There is no mux switch on the SCAR and no HDMI 2.1.

What's the best choice here in terms of gaming, temps and overall value???? What would you choose and why??

11.6 inches or less laptop than can perform? under $700

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 01:29 AM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
under $700. I'd still appreciate more expensive recommendations though.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      sure
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
metal design is really wanted. sacrifices can be made though, and honestly at least it isn't so damn cold on your skin. I'd rather have a 2in1 plus a touchscreen. performance, I want like at least a 4500u. I can sacrifice to only ryzen 3 though, especially since I'll be buying when 6000 series mobile cpus come out. prefer to keep at least ryzen 5 though. dedicated graphics would also be nice too, but lets be real that aint happening.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
    • prefer thinner but thick is ok
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
11.6 inches or less. 10.1 or less is even better
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Nothing specific, probably beamng drive at low settings (Especially considering the size, 1280x720 is fine, I heard the ryzen 5500u gets 25-30fps 1080p medium. I would be okay with 20-25 fps 1280x720, low settings, but I will be using this laptop for at least 3 years, probably, so I will want it to get around that performance now.)
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
    • I will also be web browsing for many years (wouldn't be surprised if I still used it in 2030 for casual web browsing, honestly.) roblox, casual stuff. Although my web browsing is usually around 30-60 tabs but can surpass 150 sometimes so I want that ability for that one day of the month, with stuff like task manager and settings (undemanding applications) My laptop with a pentium n5000 and 4gb of ram won't play youtube videos at around 150 filled tabs because I get a low memory warning and it says it can't play so I'd like better than that but otherwise the performance was actually okay. Otherwise it's the answer above this.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
usable keyboard, would definitely rather have a laptop with a trackpad. My HP mini I used sometimes doesn't have multi touch, so I want that 100 percent. I also would like to have upgradable ram, as my HP mini (10.2 inches) just has a cover you pop open, there's literally videos of upgrading the ram in it in 20 seconds and it is super simple, but I know manufactuers don't do that nowadays. (laptop from 2008, this is the laptop, mine has 1gb ram. https://www.ubergizmo.com/2008/10/hp-mini-1000-hands-on-photos-full-specifications/ "Runs Youtube videos in Fullscreen" was stated as a feature, back when youtube didn't even have 720p video so this is a low end laptop, I would honestly be fine with this exact laptop but with like a 5500u and windows 10.) TLDR: would rather have upgradable ram or 16gb, but 8gb is fine. also would want a trackpad.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
    • I just like small laptops. I'm in the US. I know a lot of laptop manufacturers don't make 11.6 inch or less laptops but I really want one that size. I am willing to compromise. My perfect laptop is like an HP envy x360, (top spec, because I said perfect, so 5800u, and 16gb of ram, but perfect if I would be buying is what i'm going to say) 13, but 10.1 or 11.6 inches, in black, with a 5600u and 16gb of ram, and around $700 new. or HP pavilion x360 with the black front (like this but more powerful bay.com/itm/HP-Pavilion-x360-11-6-Inches-128GB-Intel-Premium-1-10-GHz-4GB-Laptop-Gray-/265445093311?_trksid=p2349526.m4383.l44720.c10&nordt=true&rt=nc&orig_cvip=true)
    • sorry if this is to long. also, the laptop being white is a major downside, if the keyboard is white.

Buying a Huawei in the US? (or any recommendable laptops within price range)

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 10:54 PM PST

Planning on getting a new laptop for general use and some light programming (casual user). My current laptop is good, but I can't get along with the keyboard and unfortunately it has a pretty bad display.

I was hoping to get a Huawei laptop as someone I know has one and I really like the build quality and keyboard. Anyone know any sites I can buy one off of here in the US?

That being said, I'm also open to any recommendations anyone may have outside of Huawei. I was hoping to keep it anywhere from 600 to $800 (900 would be an absolute maximum).

My preferences are good build quality, decent display (current laptop has a TN - definitely want something different), good keyboard for typing - I have used full sized keyboards with the num pad for years, but I'm open to one with or without it. Other than that, really one with any other pros someone could recommend within that price range. Thanks.

€ 1300,- (over/under 200), 15"+, Netherlands; Gaming laptop with a side of watching Twitch and Youtube

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 11:45 AM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Around € 1300,-. Flexible to 200 under or over.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      Preferably, no

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Laptop preferred. Can be on the heavy side, performance medium to high. Battery life medium to high. The laptop will be for home use. It won't be moved around much and if so, it'll be in-house.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

It's not important. I'll gladly have a heavier, bulkier laptop if it means the performance and durability will be higher.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

17 inch. 15 would be fine, too.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Gaming: looking to play on emulators. A variety of Google Play games (city builders, clicker, tower defense). Other games like StarCraft: Brood War Remastered, Diablo II: Resurrected and Heroes of Might and Magic III Horn of the Abyss. I'd like to be able to play modded Minecraft too.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Games as in the question answered above at 1080p 60 fps. Google Play games emulated, such as: Tap Tap Titans, Bloons 6 TD, The Simpsons Tapped Out, Goosebumps Horrortown.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Reliable build is key, bulkyness is fine. Not looking out to cheap out there so the price should match the quality hardware.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

      • Looking for: 8gb RAM (or 16 if it's a good investment) SSD 512 or preferred 1 TB Dedicated GPU that's somewhat (3 years) future-proof. Would 4gb suffice or is it wise to get a 6gb?
      • Should I go for the i5, i7, Ryzen 5, 7 or other?

Looking around the Lenovo Legion 5 and Dell G15 Ryzen Edition seem like a solid choices.
I'm not looking to change parts in the (near) future.
Next to gaming, the laptop will be used for training related to my work and developing side-interests. These, however, won't be demanding on the laptop.
I'm not brand loyal or married to the idea of getting any specific item aforementioned.
It's the first time I'm getting myself a good laptop. Guidance and your input will be greatly appreciated!

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Suggestions for a good typing/transcription laptop for my mom!

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 08:16 PM PST

OVERVIEW: Need a basic PC laptop for solely some basic job duties (The job being typist/audio transcriptionist). The job stuff involves--

    -Typing in Microsoft word

-Playing MP3 audio files that can be up to 100 minutes in length.

-Occasionally download some low-res videos to transcribe and will need to look at the time codes in the video, but the videos aren't high def.

-Connecting to the internet to download audio files, and upload Word documents.

This is for my mother, so while I don't need to break the bank on this laptop, I do want it to be trustworthy and reliable. I'm going to plug it into an external monitor/keyboard, so screen size and weight aren't really important.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
Up to $400 USD (although based on my needs, I think I can find something cheaper than that)
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performing reliably some pretty basic tasks is the most important thing (typing, internet, playing MP3s)
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Doesn't really matter much. I'm going to plug it into an external monitor and external keyboard.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
N/A. I occasionally will need to download low-res videos, but they're not movie-length videos. Nothing super heavy duty.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
It needs to have some USB ports if possible. I could get some sort of dongle attachment if need be, but if there's USB ports on it, that'd be nice.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
This computer doesn't have to be state of the art. Just reliable to perform straightforward/basic tasks.

    Laptop for 1700 CAD

HI. so like i need a laptop within the budget of 1700 CAD, I have been thinking of either the G14 or the 13 inch m1 MacBook pro or air.

Out of the two I think I would get the G14, simply because I feel like I would get more use out of it, however the build quality is an issue for me. I've seen a lot of people say the build quality is average, but for me average means the odds of me somehow breaking it are very likely. Another con of the G14 that I've heard is that the 120hz display on the G14 has ghosting ):

The MacBook on the other hand is solid. It has good build, good screen and a good keyboard. I would probably get the MacBook just because it has these, BUT. it can't run apex... If it could I would 1000% get it no questions asked.

SO, out of these two which should I select, should I just wait for the new 2022 M1 MacBook's and G14's? Any other laptop recommendations?

    Thanks :)

What computer do I need for a computer science major?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 03:21 PM PST

As an incoming computer science freshman, I need help. I need a new laptop but I'm not sure what's the best way to go. My school in general (not even the comp sci degree) requires an i7 or i9 processor or equivalent, at least 16 GB RAM, and 256+ GB hard drive (preferably SSD). It's hard to leave the Apple ecosystem so I'd like to get a MacBook Pro. What are your thoughts on the M1 chip and the 14" vs the 13"? I don't need it for gaming if that helps.

[UNDER 2000$ CAD] Laptop for school, drawing, 3D Games

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 01:57 PM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
The cheaper, the better, maximum 2000$ CAD
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Yes
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
2-in-1 (tablet drawing mode), drawing pencil (EMR technology), medium battery life for school
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      under 2.54kg (5.60lbs)
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
Under 15,6" (will go everywhere with it, must be portable)
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
AdobeSuite (PSD, AI, InD, etc), ClipStudioPaint, some 3D : SketchUp, Blender, AutoCAD, Revit. Would like to be able to play Civ 5, the Sims 4, City Skylines
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Would like to be able to play Civ 5, the Sims 4, City Skylines. I know little about computers, but I would be guessing optimal game settings. I don't play much games/am not a gamer
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Touch screen, drawing stylus (EMR, 4096 pressure sensitivity), screen must be 100% rgb + pantone verified, for design purposes
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I will be taking school notes on this laptop, as well as drawing, so the tablet mode is necessary. It would be replacing my 2011 MacbookPro, which lasted long but is overheating quite often and cannot run City Skylines and Civ, on lowest graphic settings without crashing anymore. If this new laptop could last as long as my old MacbookPro, it would be the best.

United States $1000 need a good laptop for school

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

United States. $1000 but i'm pretty flexible

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

I'm looking for a new laptop

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

performance and build quality or my main priorities

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not important but don't want anything that feels cheap

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

N/A although i'm a graphic design student so touch screen would be nice but is not necessary by any means!

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Photo Editing/graphic design. I would need to be able to run Adobe Creative Cloud apps for school (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign etc.)

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Mainly a school computer so N/A

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

finger print reader and touch screen would be pluses but are not real breakers. I'm also torn between if I want a macbook or windows.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Unsure if i should get macbook or windows. I'd like to get one of those. I have an iPhone and other apple products and my PC at home is windows. Thanks i'm advance!
