Live USBs all freeze (except Mint) the laptop unless using nomodeset Posted: 30 Jan 2022 08:48 PM PST Hi all, I'm having a bad first time trying Linux but hope someone can help! I've been trying many distros using the Live USB on my Dell Latitude 7490 laptop (Intel 8250U CPU with integrated HD 620 graphics). Nearly all the distros instantly freeze unless I enter The only one that works without issue is Mint. Can someone tell me why I have to enter this command line update? The laptop came out in 2018 so I didn't expect incompatibility. Live CDs that are freezing on me unless editing Grub: ElementaryOS, Fedora, Linux Lite, Manjaro, Ubuntu, and many more! On the plus side, I'm now an expert in burning isos to USB. Is there a way for me to put the required drivers into each distro's USB so that I can try them properly? Or assuming I wanted to proceed with installation of one, what would I need to do to fix the graphics driver issue? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jan 2022 10:04 PM PST Hi, I'm a new linux user (barely 2 months), and the entire time I've opened my eyes and ears to Linux, I've heard only good, if not great things about Pop. Naturally, I want to try it out, but before that I want to learn about some of the negatives of Pop, so to speak, just to get a more balanced picture and in general the experience of anybody who has actually used Pop. Thanks to the people who read and reply. I've actually found a similar question from 3 years ago on r/DistroHopping, but I'm hoping to get more recent opinions. [link] [comments] |
A good suite office for Pop!_os? Posted: 30 Jan 2022 07:22 PM PST I've search and finds a lot of great office like Libre office and WPS suite actually. But maybe some of you have a recommendation for me to install an office suite for Pop!_os. I don't like Libre Office and somehow it always bugging when I use it. Maybe if the bug fixed I may go back to Libre Office. I need to search an office suite like:

Posted: 30 Jan 2022 10:27 PM PST So, I run windows 10 on my SSD, I have another drive for storage, and decided to use a third empty drive for playing around and learning Linux. After some initial issues I finally got Nitrux installed. Now my first issue, it is a pain to boot as when this menu comes up asking if I want which OS I want to boot: -Nitrux GNU/Linux -Advanced options for Nitrux GNU/Linux -Windows 10 (on /dev/sde1) I select Nitrux, it simply reboots my PC and returns me to this same menu. So I tried advanced options, which presents: -Nitrux GNU/Linux, with Linux 5.16.3-xanmodl -Nitrux GNU/Linux, with Linux 5.16.3-xanmodl (recovery mode) First option reboots me to the first menu, just as before. Second option begins to load some recovery mode printing a bunch of lines as it goes, but presents an error: plymouth failed to start and then seconds later hangs after the line: Initializing XFRM netlink socket I have not let this sit for more than 5-10 minutes so not sure if it ever picks back up. Eventually I realized that if, on the first menu I encounter, I select Nitrux GNU/Linux, let it reboot and return to the menu, and select it again it actually boots into Nitrux. Now on to the second issue. I cannot log in! I enter my username and password I set up during install and press login/enter. My screen turns black, as if HDMI has toggled off/on, and when the display returns my password is no longer in the field. I tried entering an incorrect password and this does not happen, it just says Login Failed. What is happening here? Quick edit I just realized in the top left corner it allows me to select my desktop session: Cask (Wayland) Cask (X11) Plasma (X11) The login issue described above only occurs on Cask (Wayland). Why might that be? [link] [comments] |
Need help with ssh connection. Posted: 31 Jan 2022 02:13 AM PST Hello! I'm trying to learn linux administration and I have encountered a problem. So I created a virtual machine in microsoft azure, and use windows terminal to operate the ubuntu 20.4 machine. One of the assignment I had, was to change the main port from port 22 to port 2222, then delete the inbound rule for port 22 in the azure machine. So I access the sshd_config file, delete the # and change the port number 2222. Save, restart, login again everything seems to work, so I delete the inbound rule for port 22. Today I wake up, try to log into the virtual machine with the ssh user@ip and I get a connection timed out error. I'm like fine, maybe if I recreate an inbound port rule for port 22, that will solve it. Well it didn't because now it is displaying the following text: ssh: connect to host "ip address" port 22: connection refused. I tried to look up a solution on google but everywhere they assum I still have access to my linux machine? And it is really annoying since I don't and therefore no linux commands work for me. Has anyone encountered similar issue? Thanks in advance. Also sorry for any bad terminology I am quite new to this. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jan 2022 10:19 PM PST I thought swap was to place less strain on the hardware and someone asks where is the swap? Anyway how much swap is overboard? I want to make sure no bottlenecks exist. [link] [comments] |

Autostart .desktop launch sometimes does run after boot Posted: 31 Jan 2022 03:11 AM PST I have the following in Its purpose is to change some key combinations on my keyboard via Xmodmap. It runs most of the time, but now and again my keys don't change. I can only guess it wasn't called for some reason. Would there be anything I could do to make it work all of the time? Perhaps extending the delay would help? Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Help with linux on android (userLAnd) Posted: 31 Jan 2022 02:11 AM PST I'm trying to do something kinda stupid but it's my only option so I need some help. I need to get linux on my s20fe, and then instal crossover so that I can run a windows application. Is this even possible? If it is I'm running into problems getting linux installed on my phone, I keep getting this error E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) And I've tried googling solutions but I can't figure it out. Ive tried sudo dpkg --configure -a sudo apt-get install -f sudo apt-get remove --purge package_name And sometimes I'll get a little farther but I don't understand how and it always comes back to the same error. I'm using userLAnd and to answer some questions or arguments ahead of time. I'm very new to using linux so please explain things in simple or non-abriviated ways It doesn't matter if the program I'm trying to run will be slower then a snail as all I need to do in it is purchase a subscription because it's only possible through the windows version of the program. I don't own a computer so I can't do anything that would require one to be used including rooting my phone (I've tried using the no computer methods and it refuses to root the easy way). And the program I'm trying to use is "Nware" (I want to subscribe so I can play PC games through my phone since I don't own a PC, and please don't try and tell me other apps are better I like nware and it works best for me) Edit: I'm trying to use the Ubuntu distribution [link] [comments] |
Error installing packages; internet or config problem? Posted: 30 Jan 2022 05:22 PM PST So I'm a Linux noob that decided to take the plunge and install Arch as my first distro, and much of it I've been able to figure out on my own. However, I've been having some trouble installing packages on my newly-built system, and I've been getting errors such as the one shown in the link. How do I solve this and/or mitigate issues like this for now and for the future? Additionally, is there a wiki page that I can be referred to? Thanks for any help you can provide. [link] [comments] |

Redirect keys to other window (Herbstluft WM) Posted: 31 Jan 2022 01:17 AM PST So I installed the Herbstluft WM to get a lower memory footprint. My problem now is that KDE controlled Spotify and if I pressed the "skip track", "stop track",... buttons these instructions would be passed to Spotify. Herbstluft does not do that, how can I change that? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jan 2022 12:50 AM PST Hello, I'm super new to Linux but have been running it without issue for the last few weeks. Tonight I ran into a problem and don't know why. When I boot, it takes me to the login screen like normal. I hit enter to choose my user, type in the password and press enter, then the screen goes dark. The PC is still running, peripherals appear to still be on, but the screen is dark. It kind of flickers before going dark. When I use Ctrl+Alt+F keys, I can bring up the tty screens and when I do Ctrl+Alt+F1, I'm back at the login screen with my name and picture. I can select it, type my password and press enter, then the same. Anyone know what this could be or what direction I should be headed in finding the answer? I used it normally, then rebooted into Windows on a separate drive, played some games and setup a mouse, then tried to go back to Linux and that's when this happened. If it's relevant, I'm running an Nvidia card. But I haven't had issues with it the last few weeks. [link] [comments] |
How are some Linux distros shipping with the classic gnome? Posted: 31 Jan 2022 12:30 AM PST How is it that some Linux distros are shipping the classic gnome look? When gnome 2 is dead project and not updated any more? Well I hear you can install gnome and than install the gnome shell extensions to have more of a classic look. https://websiteforstudents.com/how-to-get-gnome-classic-in-ubuntu-20-04/ https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2019/06/enable-gnome-classic-mode-ubuntu But I also hear the GNOME Flashback session may be better option. The typical of menu that have the dedicated application and places applet and notifications in the upper right corner and the buttoned task bar. Any one here done that? And have experience what it was like? Also how are some distros shipping with the classic gnome? [link] [comments] |

If i pass a GPU through a VM, can i use it for Linux after the VM stopped ? Posted: 30 Jan 2022 11:34 PM PST (sorry if the wording is awful, English is not my native language) I'm in possession of 2 GPU, really old one and fairly recent one. I want to create a Gaming VM and pass my GPU through for it and use my old GPU for Linux instead, but I'm a bit unsure because I do some pretty GPU-heavy stuff on my Linux machine and want to keep using the strong GPU, after I have finished a gaming session. Is that possible ? [link] [comments] |
Unable to run a game - no such file or directory Posted: 30 Jan 2022 03:54 PM PST I've been trying to get this f2p game running for a while but I simply can't wrap my head around what I'm doing wrong. The game is How we know we're alive Running Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS (Focal Fossa) on a Lenovo IdeaPad S145. The launch instructions says the following:
What is the Linux release folder? I've been googling file hierarchy and it didn't make me any wiser, so far I have tried to run it from the Download folder, moved it to /etc/ and /usr/local/games without success, same error message pops. This is what the folder contains: run.sh contains a typo when you first download it and says ./HOWWEKNOWWEREALIVE_Linux_x86.x86 instead of HWKWA as the instructions say so I changed that. This is what I have in run.sh right now: I have also tried chmod +x run.sh to no avail, same output in the terminal eveytime: The names seems to match to me so I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. Is there a linux distro that can throttle the window manager/desktop environment's framerate? Posted: 30 Jan 2022 07:04 PM PST Hey guys, I know things exist like libstrangle which can throttle individual app's framerates. However, I want to change my whole system's framerate so like EVERYTHING renders at 20 fps (all windows, browsers, file manager, etc). Are there distros or libraries to help me do this? Can libstrangle throttle my window manager? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jan 2022 02:04 PM PST I have a Dell Inspirion laptop with a touchscreen. After it boots, the cursor starts jumping all over the place. It just takes off all by itself. This happens regardless of the Distro flavor over the last 6 yeas I've owned the laptop. Everything from Ubuntu to Endeavour and all in between. The fix is simply to disable the Elan Touchscreen ...... xinput --disable 13. No big deal, I've never used it anyway. To automate, I have a bash script with this command placed it in Autostart which fixes it after login. My question is ..... How do I make this script run at boot before login? Where can I put this command to execute on boot? Thanks [link] [comments] |
