[Debian] Broke apt by removing the default games? Posted: 29 Jan 2022 03:02 AM PST I've been using Debian on servers for some years now, and now that I had to set up some Work-VMs for myself, for basic stuff and instaed of the hassle of Windows Licenses I thought I'd give Debian with a GUI a try. So I have a Debian 11 install on VirtualBox, chose Gnome as the DE. I manually commented out the cdrom source in and the GUI "Store" also throws an error: So where did I go wrong? How can I fix this now? Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 29 Jan 2022 08:14 AM PST I have a Mint 20.2 Live USB I keep around for diagnostics and so on. I also have a Lenovo T430 laptop that the mainboard failed on. I've used that Mint Live USB before and it always worked fine on the T430. No configuring required to make the Intel wireless card work fine. I replaced the mainboard and everything works fine in Windows but when I boot into the Linux Live USB Linux can see my WIFI (hotspot from an iPhone 12 in compatibility mode) but it can't connect to my WIFI. Keeps asking for the password over and over. The password is very simple and I have carefully checked it over and over and am able to use the password to connect with other devices so I'm not sure what the deal is. The mainboard does not have built in wifi. It uses a wifi card and connected the old wifi card to the new mainboard. Any thoughts? [link] [comments] |
Struggling to find the causes of many issues on Linux Posted: 29 Jan 2022 06:26 AM PST Hi, Several of the issues I've had since using Linux seem very random and many times don't make sense to me. When they get solved I many times still don't know what caused it, which bothers me. I would prefer finding out what the cause is and it taking a bit longer to solve. Accidentally solving it is a bit annoying, to me. If I find a solution online that works they many times don't explain what causes it either. Does anyone else have this experience as well, or am I maybe just too ignorant still? An example is an issue I had yesterday where my WASD keys all of a sudden ''switched places'' with my arrow keys. The only correlation I could see was that I had just made some very basic changes within the code::blocks settings. I thought maybe I had accidentally pressed some key combination that changed it, but when trying to change that back (with the help of google) it didn't do anything. The solution was simply unplugging the keyboard and plugging it back in. Thankfully a simple solution, but I still have no idea why it changed in the first place. [link] [comments] |
What am I actually creating with this ext4 dd file? Posted: 29 Jan 2022 03:29 AM PST Thats what commands i run: So what am I actually creating with this and can this be useful? [link] [comments] |
No GRUB menu, no OS options in BIOS, Boot Repair made things worse (dual booting) Posted: 29 Jan 2022 07:49 AM PST I'm dual booting Windows 10 and Ubuntu 21.10, each on their own separate SSD drives. I installed W10 first, did my updates, unplugged the drive, then installed U21.10. I hadn't noticed the Grub menu didn't exist until I needed to boot into W10 for something. I tried to get Grub to appear pressing and holding SHIFT and ESC (not at the same time of course) which didn't work. Trying to boot into W10 from the BIOS doesn't work because it wasn't even an option in the boot menu (I couldn't even select its harddrive). I tried all kinds of instructions and used Boot-Repair. Boot-Repair (and all the non-Boot-Repair instructions) seemed to have made it worse because now I can't even boot into U21.10 nor can I boot into it from the BIOS because the ubuntu boot entry has been deleted. Although I can select its harddrive in the BIOS boot menu, it doesn't boot into the OS (just a black screen with a blinking underscore). How do I repair this issue? I don't want to have to reinstall my entire system unless it's a last resort. If I do have to do a reinstall, how can I backup my U21.10 files and settings and restore them appropriately to the fresh install (and NOT transfer over whatever current settings is causing this Grub and BIOS bootloader problem)? Can I use linux without terminal? Posted: 29 Jan 2022 10:43 AM PST I already know the benefits of using a terminal. But I wanna know Can I use linux without the terminal? Is there any distro which works very good in GUI and have GUI for everything, like Windows & Mac OS has? [link] [comments] |
Avidemux 2.8.0 crashing while editing Posted: 29 Jan 2022 10:40 AM PST I'm having problems getting Avidemux 2.8.0 AppImage working correctly on Pop!_OS 21.10, it will open and save an unedited video fine, but as soon as i start trimming the video it crashes with this error: I've tried a couple of older versions of Avidemux and they all crash with the same error. Additionally in trying out Shotcut (downloaded and installed from Pop Shop) I notice that it won't export a video, it hangs at 0% complete, and i'm wondering if that is related to the Avidemux problem above? I'm not sure if this is the right subreddit to ask this to 😅 [link] [comments] |
Wine applications failing to launch supposedly do to proxy Posted: 29 Jan 2022 10:31 AM PST Hello, it's me again While I succeeded in getting my desktop files working, it looks like my apps (ADE and Kindle) keep refusing to work due to, according to them, proxy problems. They launch correctly but always fall short because of proxy. wine-stable 7.0.0.0~focal-1 wine-stable-amd64 7.0.0.0~focal-1 wine-stable-i386:i386 7.0.0.0~focal-1 wine32:i386 5.0-3ubuntu1 wine64 5.0-3ubuntu1 winehq-stable 7.0.0.0~focal-1 winetricks 0.0+20200412-1 It feels like I need to uninstall one wine or two but I this point I feel like it's better if I get a second opinion considering I'm not making any progress. Am I on the right track or am I missing the point and it's genuinely a proxy problem? Because honestly I never get that problem with my other apps and I messed up with wine so much I feel like I broke something somewhere. [link] [comments] |

File sharing system between laptop/PC and within a dual boot? Posted: 29 Jan 2022 09:35 AM PST Hey, I have a PC and laptop both that are running dual boot. Laptop - Linux mint + w10, PC is Ubuntu + w10. My question is 2 parts:
I don't want to use an external hardware/usb. Thanks for the help! [link] [comments] |
Dual boot on two different disks Posted: 29 Jan 2022 09:06 AM PST So I want to setup a second os to my linux system. I tried it before when my first os was windows, but windows files got corrupted somehow and I had to install a fresh os. I tried that in same disk. But I have two different disks now. I'll setup the second os to a different disk. So, is there some tips to not corrupt my main os while setting up a dual boot? Will two different disks prevent the corruption of os? Oh, and I use Pop! os on a laptop rn, if that changes anything. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Jan 2022 01:47 AM PST Hi guys, I have a laptop that is running an old version of Linux Mint. It's been deprecated for maybe a year or two now, and I want to put a new Ubuntu install on the laptop. However, the hard drive is encrypted and I don't want to give myself a problem I can't fix. How do I properly uninstall and decrypt the old OS/Memory before coming in with my Ubuntu boot? I also have an old SSD with an Ubuntu on it whose password I've since forgotten. Is there a way for me to again, uninstall and decrypt the old memory stick so I don't need to buy a new one? Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Could use some help with the boot process in Linux Mint 20.2. Posted: 28 Jan 2022 11:58 PM PST So I'm having problems booting an Ubuntu USB (20.04.03 LTS) onto my old Macbook Air running Mint Uma. I'm either using the wrong boot key or something is wrong with my boot loader or BIOS? I've tried used the Boot Loader tool to fix grub to no avail. Would appreciate info on a functional USB boot command or help with fixing the boot process (?) if necessary. [link] [comments] |
GRUB doesn't show up with Dual Boot? Posted: 29 Jan 2022 06:33 AM PST I have a Windows 10 HP laptop. It already had Ubuntu on it dual booting, which I uninstalled and installed Linux Mint 20.3 instead. The issue is, the GRUB menu never showed up. Neither on Ubuntu, nor on Mint. It boots directly into Windows. Fast Startup is disabled, secure boot is disabled. These are the solutions I tried, none of which worked...
I have checked the EFI partition from Windows and What I'm doing now is pressing F9 during boot in order to bring the "HP Bootloader", from where I can boot into Mint. Would be preferable if GRUB worked though, any ideas? [link] [comments] |
Resetting my forgotten password. Posted: 29 Jan 2022 05:57 AM PST I forgot my linux password. Tried rebooting the device by continously pressing the esc key but instead of appearing the boot screen, it still asks for my password. So how do i reset my password? It would be a great help. Posted: 29 Jan 2022 05:24 AM PST Hello, new soon to be Linux user here :D I left Win11 last week since it got really annoying and have since been distrohopping like crazy, without actually getting anything done. I am looking for a way to use my PCs "power" that i bought not too long ago without having to fix it every week or so, but I am willing to learn. My System: So far I have tried the following (mind you, for a few hours per distro that is): - Pop!_OS: Installed and ran fine, but there are certain tiny bugs once in a while that get annoying. The Pop-Shop and some other programs were unresponsive here and there, I couldn´t change wallpaper until I rebooted, etc. Maybe I'll wait for their new DE. -Zorin: Somewhat similar to Pop!_OS, though i had far less problems yet, but it seems to be a bit behind in updates? I don´t need my system to be on the edge but fairly up-to-date would be nice. I really like the look of it though and all seems really beginner friendly. I read from some users that it can become buggy as well, so that kind of irks me. - Fedora: Had a higher learning curve for me, needing to install and tweak a lot of things manually first until all worked. I had a good experience afterwards, but I am somewhat scared that I'll run into a problem sometime that i won´t find a fix for, since fedora is kind of it's "own thing". Most tutorial videos or posts I found were either for Arch- or ubuntu-based distros and the Wikis sometimes don´t give me right solution to a specific problem, or I just don´t know exactly what problem I have to look up to begin with. -Manjaro Gnome/KDE: I haven´t actually installed (just as a Live-USB) this one since I have read alot of posts about breaking the system if updates are not done regularly, or even too often. What would be a good "update schedule" for it, and about how much data per said time would that amount to? -Garuda: To be honest, it's a bit too much for me with all the "RBG-Gamer" appearence, and it has small community so far (for potential problem-solving), but I heard it is great at utilizing RAM for a faster and smoother workflow/ gaming? Though the problems of potential breaking and high update frequenzy might remain (like every Arch system I guess)? -ubuntu: Snaps take so long to boot and instead of "de-Snapping" it I might as well choose different. -Linux Mint: Does not boot from Ventoy for me, i just get a black screen with a few colored pixels in the top left corner, unresponsive to all input. Do you have a recommendation for me on what to use out of these or even a totally different one? Thank you all in advance [link] [comments] |
Manually saving files to preferred location Posted: 29 Jan 2022 01:53 AM PST Whenever I download a file, it automatically is saved to my downloads. Suppose I screenshot something, it is saved to 'pictures' as system default. So how do i manually pick my location while downloading a certain file on linux? [link] [comments] |
