Posted: 30 Jan 2022 04:10 AM PST Hello all, I've been using linux for the last few weeks and I can't find a good distro that works well with my computer. I've used both manjaro and endeavouros which would install fine, but were kind of laggy and weird on my machine. Now for the question: I've been wanting to try either debian or fedora, but when I installed some other debian based OSs it would automatically go to grub rescue mode whenever I turned them on. Now I've noticed that the arch based systems would install the main bootloader to my secondary disk and the OS itself on my SSD, while debian based wouldn't do that. Could this be the problem and how do I fix it? How would I fix the boot problems once I enter the os from grub rescue? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 30 Jan 2022 05:08 AM PST I am on an EndeavourOS install with KDE. I was messing around with Ventoy, and trying to move ISOs to the flash drive, but I ran into some problems. Whenever I move an ISO with Dolphin, it copies basically instantly. Then, when I pull out the drive, and try to boot from the distro I put on there, it gives me an error, and says something along the lines of "this isn't a valid ISO". I tried the cp command with the same result. The file appeared immediately, and wasn't complete, despite Dolphin saying the full file size was there. If I try to eject the drive it just gives me a little loading circle, and doesn't eject. This makes me think that its still moving the file, it just isn't saying so. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jan 2022 05:25 AM PST Hi there! So, I've been a Linux user for a couple of years now and so far I loved it. Tried all the popular distros and ended up using mainly Debian with the occasional distro hopping. So, as a late i get freezes on EVERY distro, even the lightweight ones. Sudden freeze, lag, screen going blank etc.. I didn't have any of these issues before on my laptop. (Midrange, 8Gb Ram ,i5) and can't really afford a new one. I dual boot with windows 10 and on windows everything works fine. For the love of god could someone suggest wrist the problem might be and a possible solution? It's really stressful and i've already lost some work sessions from having to make a hard reset.. Thank you in advance! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Jan 2022 07:20 PM PST Hello I've been thinking of transitioning to linux for a while now, but the only thing that is holding me back is gaming. This may seem like a stupid question but can I play heavy games stabily on a windows 10 virtual machine? Or is it better to just dual boot my pc with windows and game on that? I'm asking this because it seems impractical to me, every time I want to play a game that isn't on linux, I would have to reboot my whole pc just to get on windows. [link] [comments] |

[Docker Desktop for Windows] Trouble with v- bind mounting to /src/data!! Posted: 29 Jan 2022 09:05 PM PST To preface, I am very new to Linux and, by extension, Docker Desktop for Windows... so please excuse my ignorance. I am attempting to run a program that utilizes Docker images, but I am having considerable difficulty mounting (using -v). Kindly see below for the abridged Linux line item I am entering, with exact syntax copied over. > docker run -v "/D/R tools/input_files":/src/data -v "/D/R tools/output":/src/outdir --refsample file_seq1.txt --mixture file_mix1.txt Per the image --help, here is the required syntax: > docker run -v {dir_path}:/src/data -v {dir_path}:/src/outdir image [Options] where {dir_path} are required to be absolute paths. I have verified that my image exists and is usable. I have verified that the attached files (file_seq1.txt and file_mix1.txt) are present in "/D/R tools/input_files". I have verified that the selected image options exist. Running my populated Linux command returns the below error: terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::runtime_error' what(): ERROR - utility::checkValidMount(): file_mix1.txt not found in /src/data/. Please check the parent directory's bind mount. NOTE: I have tried removing "" from {dir_path}; I have tried changing the location of my input files; I have reset Docker Desktop and my host machine; I have switched the / in the {dir_path} to \; I have tried adding "" around /src/data. All to no avail. Other items of possible interest/help:
Thank you in advance, please let me know if additional information is needed. Again, I am new to machine languages and Linux (downloaded <24h ago...), so I am receptive to any and all suggestions. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jan 2022 06:19 AM PST Hello. How can I install some OS on VirtualBox? I have a problem with Fedora. After installation, I must restart system, but after that, I have again option to use it with live version or install to hard drive. *Normally after installation and reboot, Fedora should ask me about user, date&time etc. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 29 Jan 2022 03:05 PM PST Hey there, lifetime windows user here, I tried linux back when canonical was sending free CDs by post ( I remember versions like Edgy Edge or Gutsy Gibbon and Hardy Heron). I thought that was so awesome to get the free stuff and play with compile/emerald with the vista glass with jelly and virtual cube effect, but I don't know why I never kept it at the end. I really would like to make the move to linux but after reading and watching I still need some personal advice. I often do remote work with Citrix receiver, and need a stable OS, don't have time to fix bugs etc, when I'm remote working I need to be connected all day. My hardware is a Thinkpad X260 (8gb ram) and a R500 (4gb ram). Both are running a debloated win11 that runs great atm. My usage is literally Chrome only, I just need to control the fans (thinkfan, manage to set it up one time but it was a pain in the ass) and have some kind of auto mouse mover/clicker because otherwise my remote sessions get disconnected every time I leave for a few minutes. It gets very annoying to reconnect with 2FA every time. I narrowed it to the following distros: × Mint xfce on r500 and cinnamon on x260: seems rock solid but a bit boring × Fedora xfce for both laptops (don't like gnome 40): seems great with good balance of stability and updates, only concern is software availability with the package types. I read there can be some complications to get some apps. Would thinkfan and Citrix be an issue? ×Manjaro xfce both laptops (i tried kde and managed to crash it in a few minutes while doing only basic set up so mixed feelings on kde): I like this one, I tried it and it seemed ok, but keep reading bad user reviews on long term stability and complaints about the dev team. AUR is great tho. There is also EndeavourOS that looks awesome but like Manjaro that seems a bit too risky for my skills, maybe later? Fedora looks great, only glowing reviews from all around the web, just this little concern about software, maybe not a big deal for my basic needs? What do you guys think? Play it safe with Mint? Is Fedora ok? Or go all in with Manjaro or Endeavour ? Thanks in advance 🙏 [link] [comments] |

System freezing after logging in Posted: 30 Jan 2022 03:17 AM PST For the past few days every time I login to Manjaro KDE , my laptop freezes 3-6 minutes after logging in. Hardware and software info are attached in imgur link: Imgur NOTES: For the NVIDIA GPU, I use the nouveau drivers. I only use an external monitor as a display. I'm also dual booting Windows 10. Every time i turn on Linux, it shows text, which i believe could actually be related to my problem. [link] [comments] |

Multi-boot USB w/ Linux and Windows USB-Installer? Posted: 30 Jan 2022 02:14 AM PST Hi, I was wanting to create a USB, with a Linux OS and the Windows USB Installer. I still have trouble understanding partitioning, especially doing it manually. And automatic detection for dual-boot isn't working. Can someone help me understand why this would or wouldn't work? Any yt videos or sources that might help me understand this and explain partitioning also appreciated Thankyou [link] [comments] |
How do I create a Linux mint cinnamon bootable USB that works with Chromebook? Posted: 29 Jan 2022 08:08 PM PST Hi All!! I am relatively new to this and hope this question is not terrible. Im just trying to get my feet wet so, how do I create a USB that allows me to boot into (but not install) Linux mint cinnamon on a Chromebook when I plug the USB in? The use case is intro to software development How much storage would be recommended for this given I will still have chrome os. Are there other distros that would be better suited? Thank you for you time!!! :)) [link] [comments] |
Noob pre-install questions: Partition plan, swap space location, sizes, maximize ease of restoring Posted: 30 Jan 2022 12:45 AM PST Building a new beastly work rig, long time Windows user and complete desktop Linux noob, will be dual or tri booting, will start with Mint LMDE for the first time as my daily driver. I've read maybe too many articles where I thought I understood then got confused again - want a final gut check to get the setup right for the first go at things. [My old rig is working, all important files are in backed up, and I made a few clones so I'm not worried about losing data] Eventual Goal: In case of an OS issue or catastrophic drive failure, I want to be back up and running again in 5 mins with 1) a fresh install with everything the way it was and 2) without thinking about it. I plan on running automated nightly / weekly backups to restore from, and hopefully automate a restore script based on those backups. I fully expect to bork something so planning for that from the get go. I tend to customize programs a lot to suit my workflow - want to avoid redoing those settings on a reinstall especially since I'm sure many will be finicky and hacky. Aside from the crappy direction W11's going in, this is my biggest attraction to Linux (ease of restoration to anywhere). But...first we walk haha. Here's my system:
This is my plan right now...let me know if I'm on the right track or should consider something different:
I'll then make a symlink from 2) Swap space size. Oy. Found this that said current RAM + sq root of current ram? So in my case that would mean a partition of 72gb to start (and then 140gb when I bump it up to 128)? My old rig has 32gb of ram and I'm constantly maxing that out - so my usage tends to be ram heavy. Any thoughts here are appreciated! 3) Swap space on Drive [0] or [4] (from above)? I really don't know how much all the things I want to install will take up. I imagined that I could split that 240gb drive [4] between Linux and Windows for swapping since it's not high quality. But might be better to have a dedicated testing grounds to try out a new distro, or work on scripts that could bork my main distro? 4) I'd love the ability of saving those preference files (not the full program installs) within Dropbox so I could get a new installation on a new machine quickly (or in case of a catastrophic failure). Would there be any issues with that? I know (now anyway...grrr) that it would need to be saved within the DB folder on [3], but is it better to "backup to Dropbox" vs "run within Dropbox"? Thank you! Posted: 30 Jan 2022 12:37 AM PST I've been stuck in an login loop on my ubuntu 18.04 LTS for the past 3 hours. I've tried all the suggestions online. I've changed the owner of the .Xauthority file as my user, I've removed the file so that it is remade during reboot. I've checked the permission on the /tmp file. It seems to be in order. I've reinstalled xorg. I've disabled all gnome extensions. I've installed other display managers, but still face the same issue. I'm able to login to xfce and ubuntu on Wayland but i get stuck in a login loop when I try to login to ubuntu. After loging in to my user using tty3, when I try running startx, the screen goes blank for a second and then comes back to tty3. It says "failed to set IOPL for I/O (operation not permitted)" When i try the same using sudo, there aren't errors, but the screen goes blank for a sec and comes back to tty3. Any advice would be immensely appreciated. [link] [comments] |
