Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: Under $1000 USD Are you open to refurbs/used? No, only new. How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Just high quality laptop with good battery life. If indifferent, put N/A. 14" to 15" (Actually not important) Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. CAD, programming and light gaming. [USA / $4000 USD] Looking for a laptop with good balance between cooling, gaming performance, design, and app development Posted: 29 Jan 2022 09:07 PM PST LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: - Budget: $4000.00 USD
- Country Of Purchase: USA
Are you open to refurbs/used? - I am, but I'd prefer new.
How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? - I'm looking for a 16" ~ 17" laptop that is sturdy enough to be able to handle constant traveling. I work as a software engineer remotely, so I do a lot of moving around while I work. I also prefer to work on Windows, so Macbooks are out of the question for me.
- Because I'm traveling a lot, it's really convenient to be able to have the comfort of knowing I could play my favorite games wherever I go, so performance is definitely very important to me.
- I also do a lot of design work for my job as well, so having a monitor with great color accuracy high resolution (QHD+) would be highly preferred as well.
- While I say I move around a lot, battery life is not actually a huge priority, as I tend to work in places with wall outlets.
How important is weight and thinness to you? - Weight and thinness are fairly important to me, as I work remote and would prefer to have a laptop that I can easily carry around with me. I know that that can be a tall order for a 17" laptop, but I guess the best descriptor I could provide is that I'm looking for 16" ~ 17" laptops that are relatively more portable than the traditional brick-like counterparts in the past.
Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. - 16" ~ 17", 17" more preferred, as it helps to have more screen real estate when coding.
Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. - Yes. I do design work on the side. Some apps I use are Figma for app design and Adobe Illustrator for logo and icon design.
- I also use Photoshop, but this is more of a hobby app.
If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? - Some games that I really enjoy are Apex Legends, Sekiro, and, as of recent, Monster Hunter World/Rise. Being able to play these games at high fidelity would be preferred, as I love to just immerse myself into the world of the games I'm playing!
- Perhaps ultra graphics might be pushing it for a laptop, but something like high graphics settings at at least 70 FPS is good enough for me. Honestly, 60 FPS is fine, but we all know that FPS is inconsistent and may dip a little bit below 60 FPS, so 70 FPS is that sweetspot for me, where I know that I might dip a bit below 70 FPS but it's still above 60. But, for competitive games like Apex Legends and Valorant, the greater the FPS the better, of course.
- But, of course, it goes without saying that the higher the better, so breaking 100 FPS would be preferred, but it isn't a must ;)
Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? - I don't care about having a touch screen, fingerprint reader, or optical drive. However, some nice to haves are good port design (USB A and USB C ports with thunderbolt); I don't really care for SD card readers, as I don't make video content.
- A decent keyboard can go a long way, as I'm usually typing for up to 16 hours a day.
Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. - My current daily driver is the Razer Blade 14, and it's nearly perfect for me. It plays games at really high quality with amazing FPS, and the temperatures don't get too high, which is something I really love and am looking for in my next laptop.
- The display is also gorgeous. The color accuracy and QHD are also top tier.
- However, I have two main issues with this laptop: (1), the screen is too small, so it's really uncomfortable to do any programming/design work, and (2), the RAM is soldered on with a max of 16GB, but I'd prefer being able to upgrade RAM.

Which deal is the better out of these two... Posted: 30 Jan 2022 01:31 AM PST I am currently in the hunt for a new laptop(based in the UAE) and am undecided between these two: Option 1: HP Pavillion - 16GB RAM
- Nvidia GTX 1650
- AMD Ryzen 7 5800H
- 256GB SSD + 1TB HDD
- 15.6" FHD IPS ANTI-GLARE SCREEN 144Hz
- Approx USD 816.75 (3000AED)
Option 2: LENOVO Ideapad 3 - 16GB RAM
- Nvidia GTX 1650
- AMD Ryzen 5 5600H
- 512GB SSD
- 15.6" FHD IPS ANTI-GLARE SCREEN 120Hz
- Approx USD 938.99 (3449AED)
I intend to use this laptop for gaming FIFA, Valo, CSGO, Ghost of tsushima etc, photo/video editing and for work related purposes. This is my first time purchasing a gaming laptop, so I'm not really sure what to look for and whether the specs are good for the price. Thanks! submitted by /u/bosczs [link] [comments] |
Computer Noob looking for Gaming Laptop that will last Posted: 30 Jan 2022 04:24 AM PST Computer Noob looking for a gaming Laptop that will last, I really dont know much beyond the basics so any help would be well appreciated. - Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
- Lower $4000's would be preferred at absolute most
- USD
- Are you open to refurbs/used?
- How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
- I need a Laptop that can handle being used pretty much every day and can work well pretty much anywhere I may need to bring it. It needs to have great performance and also a decent amount of storage for files. Ill be using it as a duel gaming and work laptop but the only real requirements for work is storage for files and stuff I'm working on, so I need more a focus on Gaming specs and stuff. Battery life should be decent as well, but tbh as long as its over 3 hours I'm good.
- How important is weight and thinness to you?
- As long as it can be carried around relatively easy by an average person and pulled out to use regularly, and wont yeet itself if like, dropped accidently a inch or two. So I dont mind if its a bit thicker but nothing too much, and wont snap in half either if accidently moved wrong.
- Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
- 16"-17" would def be preferred
- Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
- Needs to run on Windows.
- Nothing too heavy, most are lower scale art apps like Medibang and Gimp at best, perhaps future editing software or photoshop.
- If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
- The main ones here are Minecraft, Sims 4, Stardew Valley, Zootopia, and other games, which may not be super heavy but I'm super big into the Modding community and the laptop needs to be able to handle bulk mod packs with relative ease, and possible other future games.
- I'm actually not sure what FFPS would be considered good here
- Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
- Id actually really love it if the keys were RGB/underlit and possibly configurable as well, the more custom I would be able to make them, the better.
- Needs to have USB Ports, 3 at Minimum.
- I really need Laptop that has good hinges as well, as my past laptops iv had, the hinges always go first. Granted iv mostly survived on poor laptops for years, but with the amount I move about and take it places, the hinges need to last and handle day to day wear, as I will be using it pretty much every day.
- Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
- It needs to have a minimum of NVIDIA 3070 or higher, or other comparable ones (im not too savy on specs)
- Intel Core i7 or above
- At least 1TB SSD drive
- Good cooling options
- I was originally looking into EXOTIC PC becuase I liked how customizable their options were with their laptops (was looking specifically the SAGER NP9672M-G0 (CLEVO X170KM-G) if that helps anybody with a loose idea of what I like?) but I read reviews about the poor customer service and slow wait times, so I'm now more hesitant to spend so much money there. I dont actually mind waiting but I really dont want to end up without a Laptop or something so idk.
- Also Apologies if I sound stupid, like I said I'm a computer noob and only know the basics, and most of it flies over my head so feel free to ask me for clarifications if I made a fool of myself and Ill try to explain better.

Best Windows laptop for editing GoPro 10 footages (120fps 4k) Posted: 29 Jan 2022 10:48 PM PST Hello, I'd be filming largely using a GoPro 10 and im wondering what are the best Windows laptops laptop that is compact, portable, and powerful enough to edit. Price is flexible but i am also hoping for something small to medium sized so i can travel with it. Video length: Clips arent long, more for short video montages, instagram etc. Software: Sony Vegas (sorry) or Adobe Premiere Pro (still learning) Other uses: Watching movies, gaming (FPS/Strategy etc) Warranty: Require international warranty due to travel Is it also recommended to get a stock laptop and then upgrade it later with an additional SSD if it has 2 slots, and swap out the RAM? Also would using proxies mean i can getaway with a smaller/cheaper laptop? submitted by /u/TheresNoFreeLunch [link] [comments] |

Good computer for CS/software development (2 choices) Posted: 29 Jan 2022 07:40 PM PST Hey there. Im at the end of my 3rd year of software engineering, and my old 8 year old laptop is no longer capable of taking on my workload. So far, I have been able to get away with this since my classes were online and that I have recently built a high end gaming rig that is overkill for my workload, but now classes will resume in-person next week, so I need to buy a laptop to for class. I was going to buy a laptop anyway, since my old one is barely useful. Plus I always bought cheap laptops, so I want to treat myself with something a bit more premium. After a lot of research, I have narrowed down my choices to two laptops: 1) 2021 Macbook Pro 14": M1 Pro 8 CPU cores and 14 GPU cores, 16gb ram, 512gb SSD, costs about $2300 CAD (with student discount), financing available 2) Dell XPS 9510: 11th gen i7 8 cores, RTX 3050 TI, 16gb ram, 1tb SSD, costs about $2060 CAD (on sale), financing available Here are the pros and cons for each laptop: - Macbook pros: way better build quality, excellent screen and webcam (very useful when programming) as well as great sound, great keyboard, macOS allows the development of macOS, iOS, and android apps (windows app can be made using a VM), over twice the battery life of the XPS (~17h), works for 95% of the most commonly used programming tools and more apps will be compatible with time, 3 thunderbolt 4 ports, magsafe charger, Apple store is at a 5min walk from my university, ease of use with my iPad Pro (can transfer notes and stuff easily, same accessories and apps) Macbook cons: more expensive (extra cost is justified, but may not be necessary), not upgradeable, cannot repair by myself, cannot dual boot an OS, new M1 architecture may cause some compatibility issues and may require a VM, slightly smaller screen, no face ID, not good for gaming XPS pros: cheaper (but less quality components like screen, speakers and webcam), upgradeable ram and storage, can repair it by myself if I can get the parts, no compatibility issues (except for macOS apps), can dual boot an OS, windows hello face ID, can be upgraded to 32gb ram for an extra $100 CAD, decent for gaming - XPS cons: 1080p screen (upgradeable to 3.5k OLED touch screen for an extra $500 CAD, so too expensive), cannot make macOS and iOS apps, GPU is tempting for gaming but has bad thermals and is probably not good for the laptop due to its design, makes more noise than the macbook, chassis is not as sturdy as the macbook, 2 thunderbolt 4 and 1 usb c ports, less than half the battery life of the macbook (~8h), heavier than the macbook, nowhere to get fast in-person support
Here is what you should know about me and my needs: The laptop must be reliable. I am near the end of my degree and have my capstone project class that will last a year, so I do not want the headache of repairing the computer/sending it away for a week or two. I do not mind paying a bit extra for more reliability and fast support (preferably in-person) The laptop does not have to be the best or have the best specs, I have my pc at home for any heavy work, but needs to have a good battery (some classes are given in a big hall, with no plugs around and not enough time in between classes for a full charge), keyboard and preferably a good screen, as I will be spending a lot of time on it (~9h/day) and I do not necessarily want to sit next to an outlet all the time (most comfortable seats are a bit far from the outlets) based on my previous history with laptops and tablets, I have a tendency to break them (screens mostly) by dropping them, so an accidental damage protection (like the AppleCare+ that I have with my iPad) or cheap and easily accessible parts is a must, as I will most likely break something down the road. For this point, the Macbook seems like a better option because of the initial cost of the AppleCare+ (half the cost of the Dell AD service) and the proximity of the Apple Store from my university (very useful for a quick tech support). Plus the macbook feels more solid in my hands I am used to and have experience with Windows, macOS and Linux, so the OS choice is not an issue I confirmed with my profs, the new M1 architecture can have some compatibility issues with some of the software used in a few classes, but these issues can be solved with a few extra steps or by using a VM, which I feel comfortable dealing with. A unix environment is what I prefer to use, so the macbook has an advantage there, as I would have to install Linux on the XPS and dual boot on it (via another drive or by partitioning the existing drive) and I would have to deal with all the driver issues and any other issue that may pop up down the line. Most of my use cases do not require a lot of storage. Plus I have some external HDDs and SSDs if I need any more. If I go with the XPS, I have a 1tb Samsung 970 evo NVMe at home that I can add to it. As for the macbook, I have to spend an extra $225 for a 1tb SSD (which is almost the cost of the 970 evo, which isn't unreasonable) I do not think that I would need more than 16gb of ram. If I do, I can use my desktop at home for such a task. Its a $100 CAD for an upgrade to 32gb for the XPS and $400 CAD for the macbook (ridiculous, I know) I have all the necessary USB-C accessories that I need I do not want to buy a laptop for gaming, but I would like it if I could play some games from time to time to relax. Plus this will keep my mind on my work and have less distractions. So based on the above info, what do you think? Personally, I'm leaning towards the macbook because I like it a lot (display, webcam and build quality most of all), but the upgradeability of the XPS is very tempting. It would be nice to know if someone else was/is in a similar situation and what he chose/would have chosen. Feel free to ask any questions that you may have. Thanks. submitted by /u/I_M_POSTER [link] [comments] |
Going into Graduate program. Finance and Economics. Posted: 29 Jan 2022 07:33 PM PST Going into a Finance and Economics graduate program. As the title mildly suggests, I am recently graduated with my B.S. Mathematics degree and going into a M.S. in Finance and Economics program in June. I need a new laptop, (currently running with an outdated Lenovo that takes more time to boot up than it takes me to do what I need to get done with it) and I'm curious what are your recommendations on the next PC I need? I have an updated iPad Pro that I've used for the last two semesters and it's been great for taking notes, so if Mac's multiplatform functionality is seamless, awesome. However, that being said, I am used to Windows OS and, unless I really should look into Apple OS, would like to stay with Windows because I've always used it and like the functionality of Microsoft Office. I don't know what the program will entail, but I do know a lot of spreadsheets, essays heavy in financial comprehension, data analytics, and multitasking with research and real-time charting is a priority. Looking for suggestions. Budget is open, I'm a server and can save expendable cash for what is needed. Thanks in advance! submitted by /u/ColtonBackSunday [link] [comments] |
