Posted: 29 Jan 2022 01:01 PM PST Hi folks, This is for my partners mum so apologies that I'm not 100% on the details. She is based in the UK using talk talk with some kind of DSL line (not sure if it's ADSL or VDSL), the modem/router that was supplied [a talk talk super router, AKA huawei HG635](HG635 TALKTALK SUPER ROUTER https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01A47Q77S/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_3CQRZ8WRZEK8R7MM1EQB) unfortunately only has modes to act as a router, either in its entirety or in bridged mode, it simply won't act as only a modem. After an hour long call with a rep who I couldn't even get to understand the problem I am tearing my head out with how to get a working modem for my connection. this is the only information I can find But my 3rd party router only has an RJ45 WAN connection, so my understanding is I need a modem to bridge that and the RJ11 from the DSL line, and it's that modem I would buy in which I put the information linked above? Please help me understand my options, I don't mind buying a modem myself but I've no idea how to ensure compatibility [link] [comments] |
What can a hacker do if they find out I have an open port? Posted: 30 Jan 2022 01:08 AM PST So I have a port open for my NVR.
So say some hacker found that my public IP has this random port open. Can they do anything with this? They could try brute-forcing into the NVR since the default username cannot be changed. So then what? They view my security cams? Is that as far as they can go? Or can they really do damage to my network? [link] [comments] |

Suggestions on upgrading to a WiFi 6 router/mesh system Posted: 29 Jan 2022 05:44 PM PST TLDR: Looking for advice on a main WAN Router and satellite, where both are connected with a wired backhaul, and conducting my own research has generated mixed reviews on all routers. ------ I currently have a old pair of Velop routers that I bought back in 2017. I know they are starting to become long in the tooth, and I'm trying to do the appropriate research to find the right router to keep my network running smoothly. However, after researching many reviews, comments, and such online, it looks like EVERYONE hates their router!! Last summer, I found a local electrician to run a cat6 cable between my first Velop, with a cable modem drop to my second Velop near the front of the house. I think this opens up the possibility of having a router with a separate access point, instead of a wireless mesh system, but I have not ruled out a mesh system. I was going to pull the trigger on the Asus XT8 2-pack that includes Wifi 6, but I've read horror stories dealing with firmware and dropped clients. I don't necessarily have a complicated list of devices (added an image of a crude diagram I made), but I do have some home automation things in my home. Before the 2 Velop setup, one router would give me dead spots in the far corner of my home, so I definitely need a second satellite device to provide decent coverage. Next to the second Velop, I also have a NUC running Home Assistant, alongside a SmartThings hub that controls various ZigBee door sensors and Z-Wave switches. My goal is to convert all my ZigBee and Z-Wave switches directly on the HA NUC, and rely less on the SmartThings Hub. Anyone have any suggestions to router and satellite combination? I don't mind paying some coin for future proofing our home, but don't want to necessarily be running into network instability. Posted: 29 Jan 2022 05:02 PM PST I recently setup a Starlink system for my parents who were previously on ViaSat. Their home is large at about 5,000 square feet. The Starlink router is at one corner of the house. The new v2 starlink routers do not have an ethernet port unless you purchase an adapter, so there will always be at least one wifi hop. I have an adapter ordered, but it won't ship until March at the earliest. Because the house is so big and the Starlink router is not centered, there are wifi dead spots. I would like to use a ubiquiti based mesh network, but I am not sure if it can use the starlink wifi as an uplink. Any suggestions? [link] [comments] |
ASUS Merlin making lots calls to Sina.com Posted: 29 Jan 2022 04:14 AM PST UPDATE : SoRRY. I'm a massive helmet Asus has SINA.com as a default for dual lan failover set up !. I had this set up temporary my old ISP had a 3 month notice, but the new connection is installed. It feaked me out as we all know about Chinese call home devices. Thanks for everyones advice. I have an ac1900 with merin firmware, connected to raspberry pi using adguard and unbound. The router itself 192.168.1.1 is shown in the DNS logs as making an insane number of DNS requests to sina.com whilst I have blocked this domain in the firewall and adguard block lists, does any one know what's going on ? How is sina.com related to Asus. Have a downloaded a compromised version or Merlin ? Please advise as Google showing nothing in relation to this Note all DNS requests are originating from 192.168.1.1 and not devices on the network, it's quite worrying not knowing what's going on here and we are taking 20k plus DNS requested per day. I've started blocking devices from the Network but I've not found any that have made a difference so far. 12:09:31 12:09:31 12:09:21 12:09:21 12:09:11 12:09:11 12:09:01 12:09:01 [link] [comments] |
Home network/WiFi setup for slower internet Posted: 30 Jan 2022 12:15 AM PST I've used to own an Eero Pro with two beacons connected to a 200+MBit Internet. I've never had any issues, LOVED the simplicity and that it just worked. Now I've moved (Europe) and the max. I can get is 100MBit. Am I overthinking the setup when I Google for the best devices? With 100 max, does it really matter if I'm wifi6 ready, if the mesh system is triband, if the devices have the fastest connections? I don't think I'll be getting faster internet here within the next 5 years. [link] [comments] |
ONQ Panel in an unventilated storage closet under the stairs? Posted: 29 Jan 2022 11:55 PM PST We are building a new home and I selected the ONQ panel to be in the laundry room thinking it would give me enough space for future expansions especially for a POE camera system and to drive wifi APs through a network switch (I am still a noob and this is all I gained from Reddit and Youtube). Today I realized that the low voltage guy placed it in a storage closet under the stairs which isn't air-conditioned or has a vent/window. Do you guys think it would be ok? How hot do these things get? On the positive side, it would give me a small room to play with this stuff and I can put a rack in front of it for future expansions. I am only worried about ventilation and keeping the stuff not to get overheated. Did any of you have this issue and how did you solve it? Greatly appreciate your expert opinions. Thank you! Is my Public IP ment to be different to my WAN IP? Posted: 29 Jan 2022 05:28 PM PST Hi I have a TP-Link vr2800, which unlike any previous routers of ours has a WAN interface option when making a new virtual server. I can't get anything to port forward and I think it's because of the WAN interface because I haven't had trouble on our previous to link router. The only thing thank jumps out at me is that the WAN IP address is different to my public IP. Would that be an issue or am I doing that thing where I think I know enough for competence but not enough to know how much I don't know. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Should i get the archer AC1900 or the AX10? Posted: 29 Jan 2022 11:16 PM PST I am looking to upgrade my home wifi router and iam not very informed about routers so i would appreciate the help.. After some research online and in my local market i settled for the AC1900 which i found for 40$. But a couple of days later, i noticed the AX10 which was available for 65$. All i could find online is that the AX offers wifi6, unlike the A9. Can someone explain to me what wifi6 is good for, and what other differences between them are worth the extra price? Generally on my home network, around 10-15 devices are connected but not all of them are active at once (AC unit or CCTV cameras are rarely used or active). So i would say only 5 of them are active simultaneously, as a maximum. My internet speed isn't that fast (50mbps) so i doubt this would be an issue for either routers. [link] [comments] |
Having a hard time making stranded CAT6A patch cables Posted: 29 Jan 2022 11:07 PM PST Got tired of buying patch cables, figured I'll just get a spool of CAT6A (Monoprice 550Mhz stranded 24 AWG) cable and make my own. My thinking is that not only is it cheaper, I could also make whatever length I need. It ended up taking me 1.5 hours (maybe more) to make my first 2 patch cables. I got pass-through RJ45 connectors because it seems like it would be easier to work with. However, at least one of the 8 wires keeps collapsing on itself every time I'm trying push them through the RJ45 connector, forcing me to pull them out, straighten them, then try pushing through again. Is it because stranded CAT6A cables are easier to bend? Is it just a matter of practice makes perfect? Any tips or tricks experts can share? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Jan 2022 05:52 PM PST Next Saturday I have a tech coming to install the 2Gb fiber setup at my house. He'll be replacing my current BGW210 with the BGW320. I currently have the 210 set up in IP Passthrough and use my own router, the Netgear RAX120. From the router, I then have the Netgear GS810EMX switch connected that handles all the wired connections to each room of my house. Wi-Fi is only used on devices that can't actually be hardwired. The BGW320 doesn't allow for link aggregation, so I'd have to use the 5G port on the back of the 320 to the Multigig port on the RAX120. I can link aggregate on both the router and the switch. By link aggregating, would the switch then have the 2Gb speeds from the router? So if I connect my Mac Mini with the 10Gb Ethernet port to one of the 10Gb ports on the switch, would I actually see the entire 2Gb of speed that AT&T is supplying? I'm a little confused on link aggregation and if it basically creates a single link of 2Gb? [link] [comments] |

I have an old modem + router combo and I'm wondering how I can use it as just a router Posted: 29 Jan 2022 05:29 PM PST I am aware that this is bad long term and worse quality but whenever I try to connect it to my pc it doesn't allow to go to the configure page and just asks me to setup my modem. and that doesn't work either. it used to allow me to go directly into settings but I factory reset it since I didn't know how to connect to it when I disabled dhcp servers on it. Internet drops at random, but only on one machine. Posted: 29 Jan 2022 02:43 PM PST Greetings and salutations my friends. I've come to ask for a little bit of help, after searching for god knows how long T_T I have a 500mb download/300mb upload fiber connection that's very stable and fast, connected to my machine via an Ethernet cable. But, in the last week or so, my internet connection on my main PC keeps dropping at random times - when I start downloading something (but not always), when I stream something on Discord (but not always!), when I upload a picture (but not always!), or when I watch a Youtube video....but not always! The weird thing is - it only drops for 5-10 seconds, and it comes back right after - but that's enough to cancel my downloads/streams/etc. The strange thing is: It drops only on my computer - the wifi and other machines work without a single dip. I've contacted my ISP and they've told me that the connection is stable, and it's probably something with my machine. I've already scanned for virus and malwares, changed my browser, changed my ethernet cable (I bought a new one yesterday!), I've reset my network settings, reinstalled drives...I've literally tried everything I could find on reddit and other forums, to no success. It seems absolutely random, because there is no pattern. I'd really like some guidance, for I am really lost. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
No coax outlet in my new apartment has a signal. Posted: 29 Jan 2022 02:33 PM PST I am attempting to setup internet in my new apartment with a net gear c7000v2 cable modem router. I have plugged the router into every coax outlet and the coax cables in a small junction box in my closet for 10~ minutes each and none of them provide a signal. I have called my isp Comcast xfinity and they say that the setup is complete and ready to use. I have also contacted the router customer support and they say that the router is working correctly. Does anyone have an idea of what could be causing this issue? Thank you for your help [link] [comments] |
What is a good modem to pair with a nighthawk r6700 dual band router? Posted: 29 Jan 2022 02:33 PM PST I currently have a Arris SB8200 docsis 3.1 paired with it and the last few weeks my wifi throughout the house has been horrible. The range seems weak and the signal strength is inconsistent. I haven't looked into whether it's actually my modem or router, I'll be doing that later today, but if the problem turns out to be the router, then I guess what router would pair well with the modem that I have? Thank you in advance. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Jan 2022 04:19 PM PST Well guys, I read some of the info here and I am lost I am starting from scratch, what should I do? My ISP will come soon to connect my apartment to the internet, they do not give me a modem or anything because they want me to pay them monthly for that Can someone help me and guide me to where to start? Posted: 29 Jan 2022 07:32 PM PST I moved into a new construction building, rooms have Ethernet wall jacks. The other ends in the closet (which would connect to the modem or switch) haven't been terminated. In the course of working on that, I thought to check the wiring on the wall jacks. It seems they have been wired in sequence and don't look like the T-568B wiring. Can anyone tell me if these wall jacks will work or if they'll need to be rewired in a different configuration? Posted: 29 Jan 2022 07:18 PM PST So I did a test, HDMI out of a console, to a splitter, to a switch, to a TV. I used a 10ft HDMI between each of those points. No issues with the signal quality compared to using 4ft HDMI. But 20ft as the crow flies from TV to TV is a stretch. I want to run the cables into the basement so I can try to organize everything neatly, which means I'll need to run more than 20ft of cable. Since this is for gaming, avoiding lag is desirable. While I know the PS5 is capable of 8K, I'm budgeting for supporting 4k @ 60mhz for the next 5+ years. The number of cables I need gets pretty heinous doing the math. Each console needs a cable to a splitter. From the splitter, a cable for each TV. Then from the switch, a cable to the TV. So the long cables can be from console to splitter, and switch to TV, with short cables from splitter to switch. But I also realize if the switch isn't close to the TV then changing inputs creates another problem. Aye, I'm a little underwater. [link] [comments] |
Two TP Link WAPS on Same Wired LAN? Posted: 29 Jan 2022 06:06 PM PST Probably a really dumb question. But currently I use two TP-Link WAPs with an Omada controller to make a mesh network to connect two disjoint wired LANs. In the near future I plan to finally physically connect the two and am curious how that will play out. Will my controller understand that and just use the two for load balancing or am I going to have a bad time? [link] [comments] |
How to avoid bandwidth saturation between two switches? Posted: 29 Jan 2022 10:06 AM PST With a 24 port switch (1Gbps each) with two SFP (10G) ports, how is it possible to ensure that each port can operate at max bandwidth without saturating the link over which the switch is connected to another? Bonding the two SFP ports still leaves the switch short of 4Gbps of bandwidth. How is this problem normally addressed? Thanks [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Jan 2022 05:20 PM PST Was wondering how to increase both my wifi and ethernet speed. My wifi Speed hits around 30-40mbs while my ethernet hits 75. Additionally Infomation: My router is a BGW-320. My frequency is set at 5GHz , the bandwidth is on max which is 160MHz. I tried configuring the ethernet port 1 to 5G full duplex and still have yet to see anything pass 100mbs on my ps5 downloads (Yes I set both to 5GHz frequency as well) On the Att speed test I've gotten 996.43 Mbps, 70 Overheard, and Average Latency(Ms) My firewall settings are both Packet Filter & Firewall Advanced on and both IP Passthrough and Nat Default off [link] [comments] |
