Laptop for school, audio, and light gaming.

    Posted: 31 Jan 2022 08:28 AM PST

    Hi there.

I'm currently a medical laboratory science student, and I have a PC already that I use for gaming. I'm looking for a versatile laptop that I can use on the go for schoolwork, audio editing, a little gaming, and other varying interests.

While browsing around I took a liking to the Samsung Galaxy pro 15". The specs seemed decent and for $1000 it didn't seem too shabby, especially because of the integrated compatibility, file transfer, and notification handling with my galaxy phone as well.

I enjoy the idea of a laptop that flips back into a tablet as well, but this isn't an ultimate selling factor for me, it would just be nice. For that reason I was looking at zenbooks, and also the galaxy pro 360, but this one I haven't seen many reviews on, so I'm unsure.

Any insight anyone can provide would be amazing. I have about $1000 budget, give or take a couple hundred, and I'm not a big fan of apple.

    Thank you!

    Need help upgrading my laptop

    Posted: 31 Jan 2022 09:06 AM PST

I'm upgrading from a Pentium dual core dell Inspiron 15 brought way back in 2013. I've waited for so long, and now the performance is so slow that I want to buy a new one - so no compromises on the budget part. I want a laptop that can do the following things:

    1. Gaming (no compromise on this) - should be able to play AAA titles at 60fps min
    2. With Good Display (for multimedia) and Thermals
    3. Should be available in India

I've picked ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 (2021) - the one with Ryzen 9 5900HS and RTX 3060, please comment if this is the right choice. Thanks in advance.

Laptop for music production (DAW, Ableton, plugins etc) and light work (Word, Excel etc.)

    Posted: 31 Jan 2022 10:44 AM PST

I am looking at getting a laptop for mainly music production, i assume every computer can run word and such without a problem nowadays, my main worry is music production.

What would a decent laptop for this be? I've looked around, would for example a laptop with 16GB ram, a 500gb SSD and an i5 be good enough? Or what am i looking at?

    Suggestions would be appreciated.

I know macbooks are generally really good for this, however macbooks are kinda out of my budget so mainly looking at windows.

Looking for a laptop to run Maya, and adobe products!

    Posted: 31 Jan 2022 09:58 AM PST

Going go uni for animation! The programs I need to run are Maya, adobe products, maybe a little bit of unreal engine, and as a plus light gaming (but its not too big a deal). I can't get a desktop sadly, so I was wondering if anyone can suggest anything? Im trying to keep close to $1000 but I know the market is finicky rn and I can stretch it a couple hundred higher if really needed. Thank you for helping :)!

Is the Lanova thinkpad x240 good for gaming

    Posted: 31 Jan 2022 09:18 AM PST

I play minecrt a lot, along with other games. But my current 7 year old desktop is very slow so I need to know if the Lanova is any better than 2 fps when joining a new world.

HP Pavilion Gaming 16 for 2850 GEL (Georgia) good deal?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2022 08:05 AM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    2700 to 3200 Gel (Georgia)

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

Yes, I am okay with both refurb or used

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I would like to have a Gaming Laptop, maybe with a bit of portability.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not a lot, It would just be an added bonus as I am a student

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I'm mainly looking for something that can run most games on low-medium graphics, otherwise I'd be using the laptop for office programs for my job and lectures

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

CS:GO, Civ VI and decentralgames ICE poker. I'd be happy with 60-70 fps and low-medium graphics, I've never played CS:GO on more than 35-40 fps so 60-70 would be quite alright for me

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I'd love a good screen and keyboard as am working with a lot of documents in my job

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I found a HP pavilion 16 for 2850 Gel and I was simply wondering if it was a good deal... Here are the specs: Intel i5-10300H; Nvidia Geforce 1650 Ti; DDR4 Ram 16GB; 512 GB Pcie NVMe SSD; 16.1 Full HD screen; Used, but in ideal condition.

every bit of help and advice is appreciated. Thank you in advance <3

Suggest me a laptop in the price range 15 000 SEK - 25 000 SEK (Sweden)

    Posted: 31 Jan 2022 01:42 AM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      15 000 SEK - 25 000 SEK (I can order online if it's not available in Sweden. So roughly $1500 - $2500
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance, build quality, battery life, form factor
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not much at all. Would never give up battery life or performance for weight.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      Nothing SMALLER than 15"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      Yes.
      Studio One 5 (Music production)
      Photoshop
      Lightroom
      Davinci Resolve

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Red Dead Redemption, on high, at around 30 - 60FPS is good enough for me.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
A numeric and backlit keyboard would be great. Also SD card slot. Not required, but would be great!

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I'm looking to switch out my desktop to a laptop computer soon just so I can be more mobile, because I'm expecting to travel some in the coming years. Since I can do everything I want with my current desktop computer without any issues, I guess it would be a great benchmark.

    My current desktop
    Asus ROG STRIX B460-F Gaming
    Intel Core i7 10700K 3.8 GHz 16MB
    32GB DDR HyperX 2666MHz
    Nvidia GTX 1080

    What I will be doing:
    Music production
Photoshop/Lightroom/Illustrator (pretty huge Photoshop files, and some graphic works)
Video editing (Davinci Resolve. 4k and 1080p)
    Some gaming

Functions I would like, but isn't a requirement:
    SD card reader/slot
    Backlit keyboard
    Numeric keyboard
    HDMI out

So I want a laptop just as good, or better, than my desktop. Not worse!

    Need help choosing a Laptop

    Posted: 31 Jan 2022 06:45 AM PST

Hey guys, I'm currently a University student and I was planning on buying a new laptop soon. I was wondering if there is any type of laptop that is both light and has good battery life, but on the other hand is powerful enough to run games and stuff? Obviously I'd probably put convenience and portability as a priority because I'd need it for Uni or work, but I'd also love to use it for playing games in my spare time too. I figured a full-on gaming laptop would be kind of overkill because I don't play rly heavy games like call of duty and stuff, so I was wondering if there's anything new on the market that can kind of do a bit of everything? Thanks! (Budget is around 1,500$ )

Which laptop would be best for me?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2022 05:23 AM PST

I'm currently looking at getting a new laptop I'm in the US and currently enrolled in a Manufacturing Engineer Program at a community college, so I'm looking at doing a lot of course work and I'd like to be able to take some CAD courses as well, looking to spend around $2000.

Another question Im decently invested into the apple ecosystem, would a MacBook Pro suffice or would I be better suited with a windows machine?

    Thank you!

Looking for General Use Laptop ~$800 or so

      $700-900 USD
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      -not really
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
      - I would like just a traditional laptop, no touch screen, no 2 in 1
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      - Fairly important, I would like it to be portable
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      - ~14"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      - The only game I play a lot is Hearts of Iron IV, but I would potentially like to play some RPG games in the future (think Skyrim, The Witcher, stuff like that). I would like to be able to play near the highest setting
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      - I would like a number pad, metal shell, backlit keyboard, an HDMI port would be nice but not an absolute must as long as I can use a dongle to hook up to a TV

    RTX with i7 or i5

I plan to buy a laptop for both gaming and heavy vide editing purposes and the 2 options I have are-

    144hz i5-11300h RTX 3060 16GB

    144hz i7-11370h RTX 3050 16GB

I play Fortnite and Valorant and I think fortnite is a heavily CPU-Based game if I am not wrong so just wondering as there is also a 2GB VRAM difference between the laptops and they are like 40$ different in price.

Both are under the same price below 14,000,000 IDR (<1000 USD). Which is better between the two? Is there other laptop I should consider? Thank you in advance.

Suggest me a laptop under 1 lakh (around 1330 USD)

    Posted: 31 Jan 2022 12:20 AM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Rs. 1 lakh. I live in India.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance > build quality > battery life. A 2-in-1 would be nice(not that important).

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not that important

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

More than or equal to 14"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I need it for coding(intellij, eclipse, vscode, pycharm. etc), 1 & 2 virtual machines, some light photo/video editing and playing some light games like valorant, skyrim and such.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    60 or more

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

A good backlit keyboard, finger-print reader & reliable build quality

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

SSD should be of minimum 512 GB, RAM should be expandable to atleast 24 gb. Display should have a 100% sRGB. Also I'm planning to use this laptop for 6-7 years or so having a good build quality is important but its fine if I can't afford that in this price range. It would be much better if its a 2-in-1.

    Thank You!

USA, $1400 max budget. Gaming/streaming laptop. Durable with 17.3in screen.

    Posted: 30 Jan 2022 11:31 PM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
$1400 USA. Hoping for $900-$1200 range though if it doesn't mean sacrificing too much quality.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Potentially, but I would prefer new.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Nothing gimmicky. Build quality and thermals are most important to me. Performance second. Battery life is less so because I am almost always near an outlet when I use it.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not really at all; I actually prefer chunkier laptops. My backpack's laptop compartment is really large so should fit any 17.3 screen model.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
Really shooting for 17.3. Would consider 15.6 if it was an insane deal, but I watch shows/movies on it every night and definitely notice the difference between the 2 sizes.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
No video editing really; I might hook a GoPro into it but wouldn't get too crazy with altering the footage. Mainly gaming and streaming and browsing focused.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I play a lot of WoW and OSRS, which require no serious gpu power. However, I occasionally play Ark and newer gen games that would require some decent VRAM to run smoothly at anything over the lowest graphic settings. My current laptop has a 1060 with 6gb VRAM and it runs Ark decently well on medium settings. I think anything close to (and including) a 3060 would be more than enough. I doubt anything above a 3060 in my price range exists anyways...
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Keyboard is pretty important to me. My current laptop's keys have basically fallen off or started sticking one-by-one to the point where I just plug in an external keyboard to do anything on it, which sort of defeats the purpose of using a laptop lol. The other listed features are of little importance to me.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Nothing else major to add; just looking for a good quality gaming-focused laptop that prioritizes build quality, processing power and durability above low weight and "perks".

Thanks for your time! For reference, this was a model that looked appealing to me, but I only have a basic knowledge of components: https://xoticpc.com/collections/advanced-series-gaming-laptops/products/sager-np7879pq-clevo-nh77hpq
