Accidentally tried changing hostname in /etc/hostname, can't boot now

    Posted: 31 Dec 2021 09:05 PM PST

I tried changing my hostname to bingus in /etc/hostname, but now I cannot boot my computer because it gets stuck on "Starting Hostname Service...". What should I do now? I changed it with hostnamectl and changed it in /etc/hosts too, but it still won't boot even with a restart.

Also "sudo service hostname restart" doesn't work because apparently the service doesn't exist.

Dual boot booting directly into Ubuntu. Grub menu stopped showing at startup?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2021 03:21 PM PST

    I've tried three solutions:

    1.) boot repair

2.) YouTube tutorial with some terminal code to change the menu from "hidden" to "menu"

3.) installing boot customizer and simply saving the configuration

    None of them have worked.

I dual installed Ubuntu a few weeks ago and so far no issues, until earlier today when I rebooted and both my Asus manufacturer logo stopped showing up along with the grub menu. I don't know what's causing this.

    Advice greatly appreciated.

Can't install any linux OS on my server - BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck

    Posted: 31 Dec 2021 08:42 PM PST

I have been struggling for a while, and any help would really make my day :) Thanks.

    Server Hardware:

    Dell R5500 Poweredge

    2x: Intel Xeon 5000

    128gb DDR3 RAM

Unknown shitty GPU (i think Nvidia)

    4x: 2TB WD HHDs

I recently wiped my disks on my server, since i wanted to switch to a new OS.

    I wanted to use Ubuntu Server, but when o tried installing the same error kept popping up;

BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck

    and something about snd_hda_intel

First off, this is unlikely to be a hardware issue on my side, since my hardware was active recently and was running with no problems.

After a little research I think it seems to be a kernel bug or something. I tried with Ubuntu Desktop and Fedora Server -same issue.

I have tried the online fixes i could find, like adding nouveau.modeset=0 after quietsplash, and I tried to select the option nomodeset, but still nothing changes.

I saw someone talking about a BIOS update fixing it, but I don't know how to check if i'm up to date, or what updates I need.

Also I don't know if did anything wrong with the modeset, it seems to solve everyones problem online.

Again I would appreciate ANY help you guys could give.

    Debian Unstable

I'm thinking about trying Debian Unstable. Does anyone here have any experience using it? What are some things I should know about it before trying it for myself?

On ZorinOS (dual boot windows 11).Any quick fix for it? I zoomed the desktop and then the mouse pointer started acting glitchy. I have restarted the system but no good. I don't have Nvidia GPUs. Only integrated intel.

Mac Address keeps changing on wlan0. I need it to be static so I can use mac filtering

    Posted: 31 Dec 2021 09:13 PM PST

So I'm running an arch box this is my first attempt at running arch and its gone pretty well, but I have encountered an issue. I have my wifi AP set up to implicitly deny any connection from a Mac Address not on its whitelist. This isn't a problem normally bc I just use ip link and get the Mac from there and manually enter it into my whitelist.

For some reason however there is some sort of Mac spoofing process running and so anytime the Mac refreshes my Archbox gets kicked from the network.

I cannot figure out how to stop this. Any help would be great

    Edit:

So I think I have this fixed now. I edited a NetworkManager config file and tht seems to have fixed it.

Trying to create a hotspot using WEP, but the connections won’t go through. Not understanding why?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2021 11:50 PM PST

    Hello,
I'm a complete LINUX/Ubuntu noob who installed it solely for this purpose. I want to be able to connect my DS game (Pokémon) to a WEP mobile hotspot, but it doesn't seem to be working. Whenever I enable the hotspot, other devices seem to not be able to have internet, while the DS tells me either that it couldn't get internet, or it couldn't obtain an IP address.
I've installed both hostapd and dnsmasq, but have no idea how to use them. Please help! Thank you.

HP Chromebook Pro C645 Linux Installation Help

    Posted: 31 Dec 2021 04:08 PM PST

So the title is pretty self explanatory and I am mainly wondering if there is anybody that has already done this in this specific device and could give me some pointers. For a bit of context as mentioned in the title, I have an HP Pro C645 Chromebook with an AMD Athlon Silver 3050C, 4 GB of DDR4 RAM and 64 GB of storage on a eMMC. I have Developer mode enabled and Write Protect is disabled, and I have flashed the RW_Legacy option with Mrchromebox tools, which I will get in more detail in a bit.

So, List of Issues I encountered as I have already tried to install linux, and different distros at that:

    - With Mrchromebox tools I was able to do a RW_Legacy install but the Full Rom version was not available so this tells me my device is most probably not supported. If this is true, could anybody confirm and if possible give me an alternative for a linux installation method? And if not, could someone help with with the full rom install for the bios?

-Also related to the bios, which we will get in more detail afterwards, for some reason the installed RW_Legacy bios is only able to boot my live usb, but is not able to detect my internal storage. Will get in more detail in a bit

    - To add to all this, no distro will boot if it is not launched on safe graphics for some reason but that was an easy and self explanatory fix.

    - Following this, I was able to successfully boot into my live usb, also trying different distro's (Only tried Elementary OS and Ubuntu). I was also able to make a clean linux install, it detected my internal storage, managed to wipe it correctly and proceeded through the rest of the steps with no issues. Should also mention all my hardware (Wifi, Bluetooth, Speakers, etc...) was working correctly, double checked. Finishing the install I restart the laptop, once restarted I try to boot from TianoCore but it will not detect any bootable devices, or any devices at that and just throws me directly into the EFI Shell.

Should also mention that by no means am I well versed in linux systems, I would consider myself an entry level fan if anything so yeah, I may have been completely oblivious to really simple stuff but would appreciate any help. If you need me to post any captures of anything please let me know, im dying to make this machine single boot linux and forget about chrome os once and for all. Thanks in advance!

All right what I am trying to do is setup my computer so I can access it remotely. I am working on blender and I would like to be able to use my powerful desktop on a laptop at a friend's house. I have tried screen sharing and I can't get it to work. It only works on the same modem. Does anyone know how to do this or what is it called?

Is It Safe To Store Sensitive Data In Postgresql?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2021 05:04 PM PST

I have a Django app running on my Ubunto server and am trying to make sure that I am taking reasonable measures to keep my user data secure. The information isn't ridiculously sensitive like financial records or anything, but some companies may be concerned about keeping the data confidential.

To gain access to the data a username and password is sent inside Basic Auth headers through HTTPS. The credentials are checked with Django authentication then the data is retrieved from Postgresql and returned as a json response. I've been told that its not good practice to store any passwords in plaintext on your linux server, so I don't, but from what I understand databases aren't encrypted.

It seems like I've followed reasonable guidelines to handle my data on the server but I am left a bit confused; If passwords shouldn't be kept on the server in plaintext, then why is it okay to keep unencrypted data inside the database? It seems to follow logically that it would be pointless to encrypt anything on the server since any encryption methods and keys would be found on the same server. Why then is it so terrible to keep any passwords there and have I taken adequate measures to keep my data reasonably secure?

Anyway, I am just wanting to make sure I am doing this right and that I understand what's going on here. Definitely appreciate any input.

When shutting down, this will appear almost every time, for any length of 2 to 115 seconds. It occurs via GUI and CLI. It happens on GNOME and KDE (Pop!_OS) Does anyone know why this may occur?
