Posted: 07 Dec 2021 09:31 PM PST This switch I got has a metal case with a ground screw on the back, where should I ground it to? All the results on google are for large commercial set-ups with bus bars and stuff. I just want to ground one little switch, (and am not sure if it's even necessary). I'm setting the switch and a router up in a furnace room so am tempted to just attach it to the cold water line on the water heater. (There's no outlet in the room so would plug it into a lightbulb adapter, so that's no help since it would have to be grounded too). Let me know your thoughts if you got time, thanks. I can see 100's of devices when I connect directly to the Ethernet jack coming from my ISP. Posted: 08 Dec 2021 06:54 AM PST I noticed that when I connect my wireless AP (not in router mode) to the Ethernet jack in my wall which comes from my local ISP I can see 100's of other devices that aren't mine. Presumably they are my all my neighborhood devices and my neighbors are probably directly connected to their Ethernet wall jacks as well. My IP address is different than when I'm connected to my home router as well. I'm seeing Chromebooks, doorbells, TVs, phones, media sticks, everything from my neighborhood. When I connect my router to the jack and connect to my router, only my devices show. Any idea what's going on here? Am i, and all my neighbors, connected to a central router from my ISP? If I could see my neighbors devices, I presume they could see mine as well. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 08 Dec 2021 06:52 AM PST Are these worth it? I have an old NetGear AC1750 Router that my office was throwing away about 3 years ago. I have Xfinity internet that is supposedly up to 300 MB Down and 100 MB Down. I get roughly 80 MB Down and 12 MB Up. I just wanted to see if a newer wifi router would increase the speed or this is roughly what I should expect to get out of any router. I am not unhappy with the service but I have a cable modem that I bought in 2015 and a wireless router that was probably bought in 2017. So Just seeing if newer equipment will get me a higher output. Posted: 08 Dec 2021 06:30 AM PST I am new to this Subreddit and networking in general and theres a lot I don't understand so please bear with me. I am currently living in a family home where our modem and router is in the living room. My setup is in my room and I want an ethernet connection for my PC and gaming console. I have been looking for alternatives to ethernet but most don't fit my situation. I was thinking about getting a separate router for my room so i can connect it via ethernet to my console and PC. Is this a viable option? If so is there a certain kind of router I should get since it will be just for my room and not for the entire house? Thank you in advance for any advice or suggestions. Aruba Instant On & Switch Question Posted: 08 Dec 2021 06:27 AM PST Hi I'm reaching out looking for some advice on a home network setup that I will be installing in my new house in two weeks. I have Ethernet Cat6 run through the house to each room and ceiling drops for the WAP. My question is being driven by hoping to save some cost, but at the end of the day I want to do it right. Based on my research I think I've landed on using the Aruba Instant On line, but open to other solutions as well. In total I have 2 drops to each room for a total of 8 and currently 1 ceiling drop for one WAP (House is an 1800 Sq ft ranch) I was hoping to use an Aruba Instant On 1930 8-port PoE switch for $197, but my concern about is there is no room for expansion and even in the current setup I'd have to disconnect one room 2nd port to provide one for the WAP. It would be another $150 to upgrade to a 24 port switch, my first question is should I go with 8 or 24. The second question is could I go with another switch that may be cheaper or is it better to stay in one solution? My future plans would be to also add some storage solutions and or raspberry pi servers off the main switch as well, so that might kill the 8 port unless there is the ability to add more in the future. Also should I maybe look at getting a non PoE switch and maybe use a singular PoE injector to handle the WAPs? For the WAP I'm looking at the Aruba Instant On AP22 and currently have it centered in the main hallway. With it being a smaller house I'm going to try one but would like the option to add a second one in the future if needed. Appreciate any feedback or guidance! [link] [comments] |
Pulling cable in Texas new construction Posted: 08 Dec 2021 06:16 AM PST I'm planning to pull Cat6 through my house on my own and use Plenum since some pulls will go between floor space. Is there anything else I need to know to ensure everything is up to code? Thanks [link] [comments] |
Help please: Intermittent drops in home internet Posted: 08 Dec 2021 06:09 AM PST Hello everyone! My wife and I moved to a new home in the summer and we are struggling with drops in our home internet throughout the day. We're up to about 17 drops in the last week. Happy to run through the speed we have, devices, ect. We've worked with our ISP - Xfinity a few times as well as our modem manufacturer - Motorola and this is where we are at: Multiple technicians have come to the home but come to the conclusion that we have good signal - fair. In looking at our modem's event log and connection log is showing that we have "multiple t4 timeouts" and our "corrected and uncorrected channels have many errors in them". Unfortunately we aren't very fluent in what makes sense to do next with that information. Any help and insight would be incredible. We're a bit stuck at the moment! Thank you all so much! I just resolved an issue on my network but I'm not sure how Posted: 08 Dec 2021 06:04 AM PST Hi all, I just somehow resolved an issue on my home network but I really don't have a good explanation exactly how it was fixed. My issue was that I have a 1000mbit internet connection however my upload speed was pitifully low over ethernet cable on my PC (it was alright on wifi). It was something like 955 mbit down and 8-11 mbit up. My setup is as follows: Fibre cable comes to my living room -> it goes to box that converts the fibre to RJ-45 -> that goes to router -> from the router via RJ-45 it goes to switch -> from the switch it goes to my PC with RJ-45 cable again. I spoke to my ISP about the issue and they came changed the router thinking that this might be the issue. They also tested the RJ-45 cables (this was my main suspect as I was the one doing the adapters on them lol) and it was all fine. I re-tested and the speed looked absolutely the same on PC. I also tested few other devices (both over WiFI and other CAT cables) and it looked fine on them so my conclusion it was some kind of a local issue on my PC (LAN card or something). I hadn't tested the RJ-45 cable from the switch to the PC because that was literally the only one store-bought and it was brand new. Here comes the strange bit: I tested with the RJ-45 cable coming directly from the wall straight to the PC (skipping the switch) and voila - it worked okay 950 mbit down and 650 mbit up. My conculusion was that the issue with that store-bought cable. Since I didn't have any spares lying around what I simply plugged it back in for the time being and...LO AND BEHOLD it's now working. So what the hell hapenned and does anyone have guesses what was causing the issue in the first place?? I know "turning it on and off" is a meme but I'm quite perplexed how unplugging/plugging the cable fixed it [link] [comments] |
How do I use Verizon router G3100 as an extender, Linksys mesh main router. Posted: 08 Dec 2021 05:54 AM PST Hi all, Hope someone can guide me. I have Verizon Fios (Internet Only). I'm using Linksys mesh router since it has better coverage. Since I'm not using Verizon router G3100 and instead of putting to waste in a the drawer, is there a way to have the G3100 as an extender? If yes, how do I do it? Note: I already did a "release dhcp lease." [link] [comments] |
Posted: 08 Dec 2021 05:28 AM PST I'm moving into a new house and one of the first orders of business will be setting up my network. I'm not entirely sure how to set everything up, though. Currently, I have a rack in my garage that contains several servers, the main switch, UPS, etc. My internet connection comes into an ONT in my garage, and that runs over a few feet of CAT6 right into a server running pfSense. The new house doesn't have a garage, and there is nowhere inside where I can fit a large server rack. I do have a large workshop on the property. My plan is to install the server rack in the shop and run some direct-burial fiber between the switch in the server rack and a switch in the house (both are managed switches). The problem is that my internet connection will come into the house, and I really don't want to have to run two fiber lines. I'm thinking that I can set up two port-based VLANs. Each switch will have every port except for one assigned to VLAN0 and one port assigned to VLAN1. The fiber will plug into a 10GB SFP+ transceiver on each switch, and this will be configured as a trunk connection, assigned to both VLANs. The modem for my internet will plug into the port for VLAN1 on the switch in the house, the uplink port on my pfSense server will plug into the port for VLAN1 on the switch in the garage. I don't have a lot of experience with VLANs, though. I've used them in the past, but each VLAN has still been part of the private address range (one VLAN on 192.168.1.x and one VLAN on 192.168.2.x). Will it work to have my public IP on it's own VLAN? This is the only way I can think of to "multiplex" two completely independent address ranges over a single fiber connection. Is there a better way to do this? [link] [comments] |
IP address locating/blocking (Gaming on PS5) Posted: 08 Dec 2021 04:39 AM PST Hi all, not sure if this is the right place to post but here it goes. Current setup is 200mb fibre Virgin Media (UK) modem – TP link deco M5 – PS5 (all devices are hardwired) I am having an issue with some online games on PS5, I feel I am being connected to servers outside my country. I was hoping there would be a way of finding out which server/IP address I am connecting to (I would then be able to be able to find the location through an iplocation website) I would then need a way to block this IP address in the hope that it would force the game to connect to another server. I then hope to repeat this process until I connect to a closer server which will hopefully lead to smoother gameplay. Is the above possible? If yes, can anyone give me some advice on how to go about it. Thanks [link] [comments] |
AirPort Time Capsule 2.4GHz band? Posted: 08 Dec 2021 04:29 AM PST Hi everybody, I've been using an old AirPort Time Capsule as a secondary access point (with a different name) on the second floor. I've been encountering some issues with specific devices that won't recognize the AirPort's WiFi. I just discovered why. Turns out that my phone was only detecting a 5GHz signal from my AirPort. So I went into AirPort Utility and saw that it was configured correctly to generate a dual band WiFi but my devices only detect the 5GHz band. Well, when I opened the drop-down menu to select a specific channel for the 2.4GHz band it only showed options for the channels 36, 40, 44 and 48, which are (as far as my limited WiFi knowledge goes) all 5GHz channels (both options, 2.4GHz and 5GHz, are set to automatically select a channel right now). So I suspect that's why some of my devices like cheap smart bulbs and my Kindle Paperwhite won't recognize the AirPort's WiFi. So my question is: Why is the 2.4GHz band working in these channels? And is there a way to change this? I can't seem to make AirPort Utility show the correct channels for 2.4GHz (1-13). I don't even need the 5GHz on the top floor since the bandwidth upstairs is limited to 50 Mbps. [link] [comments] |
Silly terminology question about making Wi-Fi more available through my home Posted: 08 Dec 2021 04:28 AM PST Our household modem/router is located in the basement, and, for whatever reason, wifi signal is very weak to almost non-existent for the next floor up. My guess is something about the construction of the building is causing this hang up. To cope, we have a few ethernet cables that are snaked through the ceiling/floor to access some devices on the 2nd floor, and I was wondering if there is something I can buy that would input ethernet and output wi-fi to make it available for that floor. Kinda like a mini wi-fi router. I have no idea what the term for that item would be. Is this what a wi-fi bridge is? Any help is appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Dsl and internet lights showing on modem as connected, but no internet! Posted: 08 Dec 2021 04:19 AM PST Hi all, bit of a tricky situation. Have signed up for VDSL at a new property and has been activated however I am not getting a connection. Tried several modems, different phone jacks, ensuring ISP settings are correct still to no avail. Modem is picking up a connection with all lights on as ISP has confirmed however still says no internet on all devices. Stumped on what to do. Have had 2 IT techs come out and check modem and computer settings and phone line. Can't figure it out. Please any help is appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Dynamic VLAN through FreeRADIUS not working Posted: 08 Dec 2021 12:16 AM PST I am trying to dynamically assign VLANS based on FreeRADIUS user auth but it does not seem to be working. I am able to login and everything works fine except for the VLAN assignment; it always assigns the default VLAN. What I have done so far in OPNSense:
Like I said, everything works fine, auth'ing against FreeRADIUS works, just no dynamic VLAN assignment. Any ideas? [link] [comments] |
Please help my tech illiterate self with Moca Posted: 08 Dec 2021 12:11 AM PST Hey there, We have a dead spot in the entire back half of our basement apartment. I have done a ton of research yet am not sure of the right solution for our situation. We have a fast, nice router so that shouldn't be an issue. We just need wifi in the back area, but apparently wifi boosters are a scam? I will literally pay someone to help me solve this a issue. I thought it would be such an easy thing to get wifi in the whole apartment but damnit apparently not!! Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Screwed up port forward and can't log back into router Posted: 08 Dec 2021 03:31 AM PST So long story short I'm mining a crypto currency at home called "helium" on my bobcat miner. My miner kept being relayed and it basically means unless I port forward I'll make less helium. I tried to do this and messed up the settings, and now I can't even log back into my router. What should I do? What are the steps I need to take? Tried factory resetting router and still nothing. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Im using a cax80 netgear router by the way. Posted: 07 Dec 2021 08:16 PM PST So I work for an internet provider as a service technician. Today I had a customer on our 1 gigabit service with their own router, a Netgear XR500. Router recognizes gigabit speeds during setup but as soon as setup completes the speeds it pulls from our box drop to 450mbps. Anyone have ideas as to what might cause this? Ruled out the cable and our ISP equipment during visit [link] [comments] |
Asus RT-AC88U Secure Configuration Posted: 08 Dec 2021 01:51 AM PST Finally had fiber installed at home and I decided to buy a decent router and after a lot of research I went and bought the Asus RT-AC88U. I did some minor set up in the configuration page of the router but and everything seems to work as expected, but now the most important part: How should I configure it from a security perspective? thats the first time im doing something like this any recommendation or links to guides to do it? I always hear about Google/random-dude-with-bike-and-transmitter driving around and get sensitive information from people WiFi. [link] [comments] |
