Which laptop will most likely last 6 years for school?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 06:27 PM PDT

I'm in my 3rd/junior year of high school and I need a laptop that can last me (more or less) until I graduate college. I'd hope that it wouldn't be super slow that I'd have trouble graduating by last year of college.

I have around a week before I have to settle on a decision. I have 4 options that I can get:

    Huawei Matebook D15 (630 USD)

    i5-10210U / 8GB DDR4 / 256 GB SSD /

    Asus Expertbook P1 (790 - 820 USD)

    i5-1135G7 / 4GB DDR4 (if I get this one I'll upgrade to 8GB) / 256 SSD NVME /

Acer Aspire 5 (I don't remember the exact model) (890 USD)

    i5 / 8GB RAM / 512GB SSD /

    Macbook Air 13' with the M1 chip (950 - 1070 USD)

    8-core CPU and 7-Core GPU / 8GB RAM / 256GB SSD /

My usage: - MS office programs - Browsing - A bit of photo and video editing for school projects (we make 4 - 8 videos and a couple of posters every school year) - Notion or another similar platform - Programming

Not sure if this would be helpful information but for college I'm also planning to take either mechanical engineering or a premed (med technology or bio).

Great experience on new MS Surface Laptop Go (8gb ram/128gb ssd)

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 02:53 AM PDT

Processor is an i5 but for most development it works great. It's a 12.4" screen. And it runs Manjaro/KDE flawlessly. I just had to make one config change to bridge the trackpad with the keyboard for the "disable trackpad while typing" option.

Battery life (with tpl installed) is around 5-6 hours.

the form factor is pretty close to a macbook air which was about 1/2 the cost at $500

Suggest me a laptop for these demands

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 12:22 AM PDT

    1. 65000 INR if i order in India OR 800-820 USD if i order from USA (i live in India so i'd ask my friend to bring)
    2. No. I'm not open to refurbs
    3. priority- performance > build quality > battery life
    4. no preferred screen size
    5. i'd mostly like to run gimp/photoshop/blender/programming
    6. i don't do gaming
    7. specific requirements- fast, smooth and be able to handle multitasking like editing/ animating
    8. if i order from usa would i face any troubles with warranty or servicing since i live in india? and since i live in india, i'd like a model which runs even in India.

    Thanks.

Need help in buying a local warranty laptop for international usage.

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 02:04 AM PDT

    Hi Everyone,

I am from India. I am getting a laptop from Canada via bestbuy but I recently came to know that bestbuy only gives local warranty to its products in Canada.

I really want to buy this laptop as I am getting a very good deal on it. I just want to know if I should still buy it or not?

Also, can I buy an International warranty in my country for a product bought in other country?

P.S. - Laptop is Asus Rog Flow X13

Looking for a basic laptop that will last. ~1000euro

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 12:39 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    · Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    Somewhere between 800 and 1000 euro's

    · Are you open to refurbs/used?

    I'd prefer new.

    · How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

If i had to prioritize i'd say. Batterylife - performance -buildquality. But please look at the last question for some more information about this.

    · How important is weight and thinness to you?

Light but not cheapfeeling would be awesome but i don't really mind.

    · Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    around 15 inch

    · Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

The laptop will only be used for documents, looking at pictures and basic web-browsing. I wouldn't need a dedicated gpu.

    · Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

All in all i'd like to find a laptop that would last me atleast 3 years without running into things like badly degrading batterylife or performance. I'd like it to have some premium feeling or look but that isn't priority.

Razer Blade 15 or Asus Vivobook Pro 15?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 04:11 AM PDT

Hi everyone, hope y'all are doing good.

I'm a 3rd year Computer Science student. I'm using an MSI laptop right now that I bought in 2018 but it's been overheating, underperforming, and crashing quite a lot. The hinge broke twice in 2 years as well. Looking for a laptop to stay with me for at least 3.5 years as I'm going for masters after this as well (MS in CS for sure, might be with AI/ML if that needs to be taken into consideration here).

Two choices I have right now are the Razer Blade 15 and Asus Vivobook Pro 15

    Razer Blade 15: i7-10750H, RTX 2060 6GB, 144Hz FHD Displayhttps://www.virginmegastore.ae/en/gaming/pc-gaming-hardware-accessories/gaming-laptops/razer-blade-15-gaming-laptop-i7-10750h-16gb-512gb-ssd-nvidia-geforce-rtx-2060-6gb-15-6-fhd-144hz-win-10-home-black/p/180901

    Asus Vivobook Pro 15 M3500QC: Ryzen 7-5800H, RTX 3050 4GB, FHD (don't know about the refresh rate)https://www.asus.com/me-en/Laptops/For-Home/Vivobook/Vivobook-Pro-15-OLED-M3500-AMD-Ryzen-5000-Series/techspec/

The rest of the specs are similar I think, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD (however I would mostly be upgrading to a 1TB as I need an Ubuntu VM for some college work and 512gb storage always fills up for me fast). Both are priced almost similar, the Razer being around 55$ cheaper than the Asus. (It's on a clearance sale I'm guessing as it's the last year's model, around 300$ cheaper than before, and with very few stocks left). Oh, and for me, the graphics don't really matter whether it's the 3050 or 2060. I don't do any heavy gaming, just some casual with friends when we get the time so even a 1650 is fine. It's more about the longevity of the laptop and its build quality I'm looking into.

Edit: 16GB RAM is a must, I do a lot of coding too so having like 10-20 chrome tabs when debugging a program running in a VM takes up quite a lot of ram :')

Also, my MSI's battery life was just trash. I'd barely get like 1-2 hours when I was 1 year in and now barely an hour and I'm just doing casual surfing, maybe a little youtube. So if it could get me like 4-6+ hours would be really good too.

A lot of people online have complained about the Razer heating up quite a bit making it a little uncomfortable to use, something about screen bleed, etc and now I'm wondering if that would be a problem or is that just some rare cases that can get repaired. I've heard a lot of people saying Razer's build quality is great but after having an MSI now failing to heat problems, I'm a little concerned when I read about heating on Razer.

Help on this would be greatly appreciated!

Sturdy laptop to run some smulations?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 04:02 AM PDT

Hi everyone. I'm a phisics teacher, still doing some research for a hobby. I'm looking for a laptop which, for a somewhat modest budget, could run some simulations at an acceptable speed (maybe some parallelized stuff too?). Bonus points for sturdy builds (I'll need to carry it around a lot), no real need when it comes to weight. I compiled the form:

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      1000€, Italy
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Totally
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance, Battery Life, Build Quality, Form Factor
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      I don't really care
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I play games every now and then. (see below)
      • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Would be nice to be able to run GTA 5, even at the poorest settings would be fine. This is NOT a priority.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Not really. A sturdy build would be appreciated. Also, I sometimes have to work a little bit outside; so a somewhat bright screen would maybe be better (without asking too much!)
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I plan on using the laptop to perform simulations, and it is possible that in the future I may have to resort to some parallel computing as well. I don't have crazy requirements but I'd still like to focus on performance over any other aspect.

Thank you all in advance for any help / suggestion!

    which upgradable laptop?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 03:48 AM PDT

    Hey there.

I've always used work laptop also for personal use, but now I've gone in a more 'serious' company, so I'm going to look for buying a laptop (with windows) for my personal use.

I won't need anything special, as use will be only for browsing, ms office, torrent, watching streaming and movies.

So no gaming or video/graphic editing and touchscreen is not needed and even if I'll probably use it only from home, I'm looking for a laptop for moving it around the different rooms.

Given that I won't need the best performances, I was looking for a computer that last me as much as possible, so I was thinking to get an upgradable (at least battery, ram and ssd) one.

    Any suggestion?

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
budget is not an issue, but seen those spec I don't expect to spend too much
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
if this is the best option, why not
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
      laptop life first
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
not too mush, I'll only move in different rooms
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      nothins special
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      nothing special

    Thanks.

    700 euros or below

    · Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

    · How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance and battery life over everything else

    · How important is weight and thinness to you?

Light preferably, but it's not necessary

    · Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

14-16 inch, not too big (no ultrabooks)

    · Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Uni work (so taking notes, watching and recording online classes, managing documents) and web-browsing. No heavy workload. I'd love a dedicated GPU although it's not a dealbreaker if it doesn't have it

    · Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'd love upgradeable SSD and RAM to upgrade down the line, and also a replaceable battery (not necessary, but love to have it). Also, 8GB of RAM at the very least

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      Yes

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I'm not very well informed on these topics but I'd want battery life to be at least average, the build quality does not concern me if it does not affect the performance, and ultrabook/2-in-1 laptops seem preferable but only if they fit the budget

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

I'd want it to be light/thin because I want to carry it with me if I need it at school

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

No but I use my laptop for coding and programming (C++)

      N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

No, but Id like it to have a touch screen only if it fits the budget

Help me pick a gaming laptop for gaming and photo editing

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 01:30 AM PDT

Hello guys, I want to switch from my Thinkpad to a gaming laptop. I found in my country 3 variants but Idk what to choose from...

    1. Lenovo Legion 5 15 inch FHD 165hz with Ryzen 7 5800H, 16GB ram, 512GB SSD, and RTX 3060, that's about 1070$ in my country brand new, sealed. I like it, but I've heard that build quality it's a little bit awful and idk what to say about this, and it's also a little bit too heavy for me
    2. Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 GA401QM-HZ266T with Ryzen 7 5800HS, 16GB ram, 1TB SSD, and RTX 3060 , it's about 1170$ in my country brand new, sealed.

This is my first option, however, I'm concerned about the fact that's really portable and it will overheat a lot when gaming, so that's why I'm more towards the Legion 5/5 Pro

    3) Lenovo Legion 5 Pro 16inch QHD 16ACH6H with Ryzen 7 5800H, 16GB ram, 512GB SSD, and RTX 3060, it's about 1240$ brand new, sealed. This is the best option so far on paper, however, it's a little bit too expensive and too heavy, and IDK if this is suitable for me...

What I want from my laptop it's to be able to play AAA games for at least 3-4 years, to not have performance issues, to be portable, and to not overheat. I know that gaming laptops tend to be a little bit hotter, but I don't want to have a radiator with me... Internal monitor it's not a problem since most of the time I'll be editing on an external monitor, however, the QHD monitor on the Legion 5 Pro it's like a bonus for me.

What do you think I should choose?

    • Are you open to refurbs/used? Definite yes, just want it mint condition

    • How would you prioritize form factor, build quality, performance, and battery life?

Battery life and display quality as an artist. Also for writing papers. Prefer IPS panel and a good one at that.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14 and over.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Krita, Spotify, Chrome

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Not looking for gaming laptop anymore

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? An okay keyboard would be nice

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

It needs to be under probably 5 pounds. Also, the reason I want to do a trade only is my college recommended I quit my job due to its rigor, so I have no money now (parents control my work money despite me being 20).

    Need laptop for new job

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 06:23 PM PDT

I just started a new job and they don't provide any computers because it's a really small company, like there's literally one other person there with me besides the two people who run the company who aren't actually at the location. They said that I can buy a laptop and the company will pay for it. I was going to get This laptop since it's on sale for $370 at Costco, and I feel like that's a fantastic deal considering it has 8 gigabytes of RAM and a current generation i3. I posted on the sysadmin sub and people seem to think that it was a horrible idea because it has Windows S even though I can just convert it to Windows 11. This job doesn't require too much computer work, just emailing, word, powerpoint, Excel, and doing research on the internet so nothing demanding. Any advice would be very appreciated, thank you!

14in (Used?) Business Laptop with Good Display (~500 USD)

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 09:34 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

500 USD, would be willing to pay higher, but I would really rather not since I'm buying used.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Yes!

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Most important: At least a 300 nits screen, preferably 400 nits, and good color accuracy. I'm going to be using the laptop to watch films and edit photos. A good build quality and battery life would be nice, but performance isn't really a big issue.

Preferably the laptop would come with an 8th generation intel chip or better, and the possibility for at least 16gb of ram.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not that important, but I would like 14in. 15.6in is just too much.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    14in.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Honestly, all I am going to be doing is running linux and watching movies. I run a pretty lightweight desktop environment so performance isn't really an issue. I might occasionally play something like Fallout: New Vegas or ROBLOX, but anything 8th gen intel or better will have good enough integrated graphics.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    See above.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

A good keyboard would be nice and I would like an ethernet jack, but that's about it.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

The thing I am most concerned about is the display, if that wasn't obvious. Bonus points if you recommend me an AMD laptop, though.

Time Sensitive -- New HP Envy 17 or Certified Refurbished 2019 HP Omen

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 12:22 PM PDT

I'm looking for a new 17" laptop for business purposes and was going to purchase the 2021 HP Envy (16/256 SSD), but found a certified refurbished HP Omen for a few hundred dollars cheaper and with better specs (16/1 TB SSD).

Again, the computer will exclusively be used for business purposes, but I've read gaming laptops are better for the long term because of the heightened specs. Which of the two would you suggest buying?!?

The larger the size the better!
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Very light video editing. No gaming at all.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      N/A

I want at least 16GB RAM, at least 500GB SSD. This will be my everyday laptop, and I will be installing a lot of IDEs for programming, several databases, and VMs.

    Asus or Acer?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 07:52 PM PDT

Hi! I'm about to start my undergrad thesis project soon and I'm looking for a laptop that should last me through post grad hopefully. I've narrowed it down to two they are:

    Acer Predator Helios 300

    i7 10750H/ 16GB DDR4/ 1TB HDD+256GB SSD

    ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14

    AMD Ryzen 9 5900HS/ 16GB DDR4/ 1TB SSD

I'm mostly going to be using for schoolwork which includes a lot of bioinformatics, data analysis and programming. On the side, I'll have to do a bit of photo and video editing for the clubs I'm involved in. I'd love some insight.
