RTS Gaming Laptop Recommendation? Dell G15 5515 Ryzen Edition

    Posted: 06 Nov 2021 08:13 PM PDT

Old school RTS player here. Stoked to get back into it now that AOE4 is out, and Company of Heroes 3 is just around the corner. Need to get a gaming laptop just for RTS games; they're all I'll be playing!

I've decided on the Dell G15 5515 Ryzen Edition. Love how it looks and affordability. Now I just need to decide on the configuration. There are low, mid, and high end configurations.

Would the low end be powerful enough to handle all RTS games on max settings? Or would I be better off investing a bit more into a higher end model?

I live in Hong Kong, so could probably also haggle down the price by $100-200 USD for each model.

Thanks for everyone's help in advance!

Does this laptop seem like a good gaming laptop?

I'm buying it as a gift but the price really seems too good to be true. Especially for a 3050. I'm wondering if anyone sees any glaring issues I'm overlooking for a gaming laptop

    Money-no-object work laptop in Switzerland

    Posted: 07 Nov 2021 01:41 AM PST

    Dear all,

thanks first of all for your consideration of this strange request.

I need to get some laptops for a team of engineers that will do image-analysis.

    • Total budget: Really no limits, let's say 5kCHF or € if you need a limit
    • Second hand: no
    • Prioritisation order: In order for you:
    1. build quality
    2. performance
    3. battery life
    4. ultrabook 13-14" increasing to slim 15"
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?: Pretty important,
    • Preferred screen size? 13-14" increasing to slim 15"
    • Programs to run: ML frameworks, python handling large arrays in memory
    • Games: not officially
    • Specific requirements:
      • Linux compatibility is a must
      • A graphics card that can do basic CUDA for testing is needed (although options without this I would be interested to consider)
      • Top quality screen, ideally high brightness and high contrast. Don't want too many pixels, full HD and bright and contrasted is better than many pixels
      • 32 GB of RAM is really a minimum
      • Good technical support
      • USB-C (and charging) would be nice
    • Finishing thoughts: I have a slight preference for Ryzen machines, but they seem to be lower end. Here are some machines that I have seen that are close to the mark:
    1. TUXEDO InfinityBook Pro 14 (clevo machine): not bad, apparently loud fans, tech support is remote, currently going for this one
    2. Acer Swift X AMD: almost perfect but only 16GB
    3. ThinkPad P14s Gen 2: almost perfect, soldered ram sounds not optimal
    4. ThinkPad T15g Gen 2: Perfect specs, quite big machine

Is the nvidia mx450 of any use? Wanting to buy a Dell laptop.

    Posted: 07 Nov 2021 01:59 AM PDT

I have decided to buy the Dell Inspiron 14 laptop. It feels good and sturdy and generally checks all the boxes for what I want. I am stuck in a bit of a dilemma though. There are two variants available: one with ryzen 5 5500u (6 cores) and no dedicated graphics card, and the other one with Intel i5 11th gen 11300H (4cores) with a 2GB nvidia mx450 graphics card.

My main usage will be mostly on chrome (online classes) but I will also use it for light gaming and After Effects, Premiere Pro, photoshop etc.

Which one of the versions would be better? Considering the battery life, rendering performance, and reliability.

Looking for an all round laptop. Country: New Zealand, budget: $2000 NZD

    Posted: 07 Nov 2021 01:19 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

$2200 NZD (Apologies I can't change the title to match this)

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

Only if in great condition, prefer new.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Build Quality and performance are important, Form factor is mildly important (I like sleek laptops but am not too picky) and battery life is not important.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not hugely important, but slimmer is preferred.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      -15" and up.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I'd like to be able to have many tabs open at the same time, for games, see answer below.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I'd like the laptop to be at least ok for gaming, like being able to run For Honor at 60fps on medium settings. My current laptop can no longer run L4D2.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Display is very important, I watch a lot of movies on my laptop. It doesn't need to be 4k or anything just nice to look at with good colors.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'm a fan of glossy displays over matte.

    Thank you.

Looking for a portable laptop with good battery

    Posted: 06 Nov 2021 12:30 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
1000$ could go for a bit more.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No, just new.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Battery life is very important, as I take it with me to school and work and plugs aren't always available. It needs to handle a lot of chrome tabs and documents open at the same time. Ultrabook or 2-in-1 could be nice, but not as important.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Weight is very important, thinness not as much.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      13-14 inches.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Mostly it's Word, Acrobat Reader, chrome and Zotero. Maybe some light gaming like Minecraft or an old game like Generals.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I don't need high FPS gaming at all.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I type a lot, so a good keyboard is important.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I currently have a Dell XPS 13 9360, but I can't really afford the latest model. The Asus Zenbook 14 looks like a nice option, but I would love any suggestions. Thanks!

Low Budget Indie Gaming Laptop UK £650

    Posted: 07 Nov 2021 12:00 AM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    • £650 UK

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    • Yes

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    • Performance

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    • Prefer lightweight, but prioritise performance

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    • Prefer 17" +, but prioritise budget and performance

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    • Inscryption, Baldur's Gate 3, Disco Elysium, World of Horror, Impact Winter

    • Video editing: software not yet selected

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    • See above, running smoothly. No specific frame rate etc.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    • Reliability and longevity

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    • Could possibly go up to £1000 but would prefer to stay at around £650

I'm after a laptop that can run games like Inscryption, Baldur's Gate 3, Disco Elysium, World of Horror, Impact Winter. It doesn't necessarily need to run AAA titles as I have consoles for the more demanding titles (cost and comfort reasons). But I don't want a system which will immediately be obsolete.

I'm happy to have a refurbished model and to that end I've found a few which are more-or-less within budget, but I have ZERO idea as to their relative comparability.

My budget is only UK £650 and the laptops I'm looking at are:

HP Pavilion 15-ec1002na AMD Ryzen 5 8GB RAM 512GB SSD Nvidia GTX 1650Ti 15.6" Gaming Laptop

ASUS TUF FX705DT Gaming Laptop AMD Ryzen 5 3550H 8GB RAM 512GB SSD 17.3" Full HD

ASUS TUF A17 Gaming Laptop Ryzen 5-4600H 8GB RAM 512GB SSD 17.3" FHD 4GB Graphic

    ACER NITRO AN517

    Any advice appreciated.

Looking to buy a laptop for playing mostly causal, but a little heavy, games

    Posted: 06 Nov 2021 10:42 PM PDT

    Edit: added form

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    600-800$ USD

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

Perhaps if it's very well functioning and high power for price range

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I always play while charging my laptop so battery life isn't very important, though good battery life is very important. I just need good graphics for the Sims 3 and all it's extra content (expansions, stuff packs, store content)

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Ehh kinda. I prefer a sleek design but not if it hinders with performance

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

I guess 15.6 inches? maybe like 14 idk

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    Games

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Sims 3 (little to no mods, all expansions and stuff plus store content) Crusader kings II (lots of mods and all add-ons) Crusader Kings III (no mods and all add-ons) Roblox? probably idk Civilizations VI? probably not idk

I want to play the Sims 3 on the highest graphics possible and smoothly. The others games too but really the Sims is what i'm focused on playing. I rarely ever play online.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

4k resolution, one or two usb ports, ethernet port, bluetooth (for airpods and mouse), and I guess wifi.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    Summary:

Hi! I am looking for a gaming laptop that costs around 600-800$ to buy for Christmas.

    Things I need are:

Bluetooth for AirPods, and possibly mouse

At least one usb port (preferably two)

    Ethernet port

    4k resolution

WiFi (incase they make laptops without WiFi for some reason)

    Things I don't need:

    HDMI port

    Customization (for appearance)

    Memory card holders

    Optical drive

I have to play my games on the HIGHEST graphics settings and smoothly. I don't really play games online. I usually only play the following games:

Sims 3 (Usually little to no mods or custom content, all expansions, all stuff, and all store content)

Crusader Kings II (bunch of mods, all add-ons)

Crusader Kings III (no mods, with add-ons)

Perhaps Roblox? (only online game I play which I play very occasionally)

Perhaps Civilizations VI? (probably won't play this one)

As for videos, I usually only use my TV for shows and movies but I will watch youtube on my laptop. I may upgrade the hard drive to something better so I can buy a laptop with a small hard drive (or none). For compatibility reasons I don't have an Xbox only a Playstation and I use an iPhone. I won't be using this laptop for work or school. I probably will be checking socials on this laptop. Typically I use laptops always when their charged so battery life doesn't matter too much but I will still appreciate long battery life. I would much prefer a brand new laptop but if a used laptop is very good I will take that. If you have questions I am more than happy to answer them and narrow down my options, will appreciate any responses!!❤️

What laptops are best for software design and gaming?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2021 10:25 PM PDT

Hi, I am looking for a laptop which could run my software work (using Adobe applications such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Animate, and 3D Modelling with Cinema 4D) and gaming (planning to play games like Minecraft, Valorant, Genshin Impact, Apex Legends) pretty well

The laptop can be mid-tier to high-tier, as long as everything can run smoothly without any lag / low fps.

My budget is preferably less than SGD$2k

    Thanks in advance!

What's the best bang for my buck? I'm not super into computers but I know 500 dollars won't get you much.

Looking for a touchscreen convertible small in size and price

    Posted: 06 Nov 2021 09:14 AM PDT

I need some advice on what convertible I should get. After searching for something appropriate for my needs I now settled for a Lenovo Flex 5 14, but I wanted to look if someone might have a better recommendation than that. The device needs to be under 14" (preferably even smaller), also it's supposed to have somewhat good processor and graphics chip. My budged is around 300 to 400€, what might be a better solution?

Looking for something built to last to get me through ~4 years of college. build quality is important, ability to replace/upgrade RAM/Storage is a great feature. I would prefer it to not be touchscreen as it just seems like another thing that could go wrong with the computer. 16GB RAM and a webcam is required for school. NVME of at least 512GB is preferred. I type a lot, so a good backlit keyboard is a must.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
AMD Ryzen 5 or 7 CPU would be preferred over Intel chips. Aluminum build is preferred over plastic. So far I have been looking into a refurbished base model Razer Blade 15 for $1049 and MSI Laptop Prestige 14 EVO for $699.

    deciding between 2 2 in 1's......

    Posted: 06 Nov 2021 07:48 PM PDT

    Hi there,

I am looking for a 2 in 1 in Canada that costs less than $1.5k CAD.

I am looking for a 2 in 1 laptop that can handle light/med. gaming, photo editing, streaming on Twitch, etc. My current computer is a Surface Pro 5 128 GB with a dual core i5, and 4 GB RAM. It runs ok but not the greatest. I would like to do more than browsing the web, watching videos, etc. My bare minimum specs are 8 GB RAM but 16 GB is preferable, an AMD Ryzen 5 5000 series or AMD Ryzen 7 4000 series or later. I would like it to be a 2 in 1 laptop cause I like the option of touching the screen. Prefer 14" screen size of at least 1080p. 512 GB SSD storage is the sweet spot. Has to have great battery life.

    I have narrowed my choices to the Lenovo Flex 5 14" 2 in 1 Ryzen 7 4700u 16 GB RAM and 512 GB storage. Amazon.ca price: $1078

I also found a Dell Inspiron 14" 2 in 1 Ryzen 7 5700u 16 GB RAM and 512 GB storage. Dell Canada price: $1029 (Black Friday sale)

Both seem to have great battery life.

So which one do you recommend? Any other suggestions are welcome.

General-use laptop with light gaming, CAD, and video editing, $1500 USA

    Posted: 06 Nov 2021 07:28 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    $1500

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Yes

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance, build quality, battery life, form factor. Basically it can be ugly, heavy, and bulky if that's what saves money. I plan to keep it plugged in most of the time.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not very important.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

AutoCAD LT, Power Director, probably the most demanding game I play is RimWorld

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    Nothing specific.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Would like to have min 256GB SSD, and 2TB HDD. Would like Thunderbolt/USB-C port(s) such that I can plug into a hub for power and external monitors. Touch screen would be a plus. Windows 10.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Would prefer to avoid anything that is known to be bloated / adwared / spywared.

Desktop replacement/gaming laptops you would recommend

    Posted: 06 Nov 2021 06:01 PM PDT

    • **Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:** $1500 to $3000 in US
    • **Are you open to refurbs/used?** Don't care just not used
    • **How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?**Performance and cooling as a priority, don't care about form factor.
    • **How important is weight and thinness to you?**prioritizing cooling and performance so above average or bigger is ok and I'm not going to move it around much so weight does not matter
    • **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**I play a variety of games. On graphics demanding games I would like to cap fps to 80 maxed settings and on other games above 100
    • **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**Reliable build quality/high response time and be able to open the back plate for upgrades and cleaning dust off the fans / paste replacement 1080p
    • **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**This will be used for unreal engine 3d rendering software and games

    2018 MacBook Pro 15” vs. 2020 MacBook Pro 13”

    Posted: 06 Nov 2021 08:53 AM PDT

    2018 MacBook Pro 15" vs 2020 MacBook Pro 13"

I'm trying to decide between these two machines. They are both 2nd hand, priced at $1500 CAD. 2018 MacBook Pro 15" has a Core i7, 512 GB SSD, and 16 GB of RAM. The 2020 MacBook Pro 13" has an Apple M1, 256 GB SSD, and 8 GB of RAM. I really like the larger size, but I also really like the M1 chip, and all the performance and battery life improvements it brings.

I live in Canada, and am planning on using the computer for general office work, web browsing, and entertainment.

    Any advice? Thanks.

Hi! Recent college grad with Tech-y interests, looking to upgrade my PC

    Posted: 06 Nov 2021 04:56 PM PDT

I am looking for a Windows PC that would be good for CAD, Blender, amateur video editing and daily use. I'd like to prioritize battery life over performance.

Under $1600 would be ideal but willing to hover around a bit if the deal is worth it.

Thank you for your suggestions :)
