Recommendations for new router or routers, please? Posted: 29 Nov 2021 11:14 PM PST Hey all! I've just returned some Nest Wifi pucks for a refund because trying to do everything through Google Home app was breaking me emotionally. So now I'm in the market for a new router! But I am a little bit lost and overwhelmed by the number of options, even after doing what feels like extensive research into this. Because I've returned the Nest Wifi, the uppermost limit on our budget is $400 AUD. That's how much I was refunded. I've been doing a bunch of research, read a lot of stuff on my man Dong's website, and have narrowed it down to RT-AX55, RT-AX56U, RT-AX58U, RT-AX92U, RT-AX82U, RT-AX88U, RT-AX86U. This is a crazy amount of routers still, so I'm wondering if someone can give me some more guidance on deciding which solution would actually be appropriate for our situation, please? In a perfect world I would get the RT-AX86U because the internet loves that router, but it's out of the maximum budget at the moment, though at times has fallen just into budget during sales. Our house is about 22m long but only about 10m wide so I am wondering if we need another mesh solution or if a single router will be strong enough to provide signal to cover the entire property effectively. Because of the way our phone line is placed in the house, all the networking stuff is in a room about a quarter of the way along, so we don't have the router placed in a central location. I liked the sound of ASUS's AiMesh system, and I was considering setting up a wireless mesh network using this, and then potentially having the house wired with ethernet at some point in the future to create a wired mesh. If I can do this for the $400 budget. If I even need to do this. I've tried to think of as much useful information about our wifi usage as possible and listed in the points below:
Any feedback at all is appreciated and welcome, thanks to anybody who's able to reply. TLDR: Please recommend a sub $400AUD ASUS router for my small but long 4 bedroom house [link] [comments] |
Should I upgrade my modem if so which one should I get? Posted: 29 Nov 2021 10:08 PM PST I'm currently using the Xfinity 600Mbps plan, my modem is an old Netgear C3700. It works fine with Xfinity, but it seems not be able to provide the best speed according to Xfinity. Is it true? There are three cable modem and wifi router combo they recommands:
None of them are cheap, should I upgrade or should I continue using my current one? For upgrade which modem would you recommend? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Virtual machine networking help Posted: 30 Nov 2021 12:55 AM PST My environment: Host OS: Windows 7 Professional Virtualization software: Virtualbox Guest OS: Windows XP 32 bit Raspberry pi running Raspbian TP link 5 port gigabit network switch Suppose I need a virtual machine to communicate (RPi)192.168.1.1, subnet 255.255.255.0. What should be the Networking setting of the VM? NAT or bridge? I believe it should be bridge, that way the guest OS has control of the network adapter. But in that case what should be IP set in Host OS network adapter and Guest OS network adapter? [link] [comments] |
Is my Wifi 6 router not working at max speeds? Is it capped? Posted: 29 Nov 2021 11:28 PM PST First of all router: Huawei AX3 Dual-Core Wifi-6 The problem: Me and my familly pay for 200mbps internet speeds, and we get that from our internet provider and it works with ethernet, but our wireless connection has always been slow so we got a Wifi-6 Router. The problem is it works at the slow speed of 20mbs down and even less up. idk what's the problem, does someone know why my wifi6 isnt working at full speed. So um ye someone with more experience if i can get help from you it will be great. Eddit: ive never heard that but still for now i am concerened more with my internet speeds, and frankly ive used huawei routers for what like 10 years now and ive had no trouble with them until we paid for faster intrnet and it didnt work, but ill still look into it [link] [comments] |
Ipv4 works, ipv6 works then not. Posted: 29 Nov 2021 10:34 PM PST When i enable my network card everything works on www.test-ipv6.com however, a few minutes later ipv6 just stops. The same behaviour also happens on Wi-FI. I have an Askey RTF3505VW-N2 Fiber router. This are some screenshots that i hope helps clearing out any questions: Imgur: The magic of the Internet Fun thing is ipv6 always works from router. [link] [comments] |
Should I put my modem and router in the basement? Posted: 29 Nov 2021 10:23 PM PST I'm getting brand new fibre internet installed at my place. We own a 1004sq foot detached bungalow with a finished basement. The thing is we prefer to have the modem and router in the basement that way we don't have to drill through plaster walls and to keep things clean upstairs. Will my speeds be severely impacted? Do I have a strong enough router? Also any tips on how to make it look clean? I currently have an ASUS AC-86U 2900 router [link] [comments] |
Trying to track a Network drop cause Posted: 29 Nov 2021 05:24 PM PST Most nights, not all, I get a very quick network or Internet drop. It lasts just seconds. Just long enough for chat apps on my PC or Mac to drop connection and return seconds later, and long enough for my phone/tablet to move to cellular then back. It's not the router/modem rebooting as its too quick, and it's not isolated to one device. It seems to happen between 8-8:30 PM at night. I'm using FIOS with their provided router as my only Wifi hub. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Nov 2021 10:20 PM PST Hi, I was hoping I could get some advice. My wired internet speed was terrible, so I change providers to a wireless internet (a local company). Speed has increased 4x on download and uploads, so that's what I wanted. However, the local ISP controls EVERYTHING to do with the modem/router. There is no login page for the modem/router at all - they literally asked what I wanted the WIFI name to be, what I want the password to be on setup, and set it all up on installation. Not very secure, but its a tradeoff I've had to make for speed at the moment. My problem is, with no login page and no control over the modem/router - I am unable to do any configuring of the network. My main problem is, and I'm hoping someone has a solution here, is port forwarding. I have a Synology DiskStation NAS that I would like to get access to from outside the network on a number of different ports for different applications. I have contacted my ISP and asked them if it would be possible to forward such ports to the IP needed within my home network, which he said would be no trouble. Today I received an e-mail stating - "My engineer has advised that none of these ports are blocked and suggested a 3rd party router your end, he said opening the ports are ok but maintenance may be required and that's something I don't need to add to my many tasks." What I need to find out is how to connect a 3rd party router to this one and avoid issues like double NAT and two DHCP servers on the same network, while being able to achieve the required port forwarding. Is it as simple as connecting the new router into one of the LAN ports of the modem/router? Then disable DHCP server on the new router Port forward on the new router Would this even work? Or do I need the modem/router to be put into bridge mode? [link] [comments] |
Ubuntu 2 NICs, I would like one for UDP traffic, the other one for internet Posted: 29 Nov 2021 07:46 PM PST I need to configure a computer with Ubuntu 20.04 that has 2 network cards, one is receiving video streaming with SRT and I need to transmit UDP to the other card (my software already transcoded the streams), UDP is now going out thru the first card. Can i block the udp port one of them and set up routes to the cards? [link] [comments] |
Router and Modem vs Stand alone Router + Modem Posted: 29 Nov 2021 08:57 AM PST Hello all, I am moving and switching to a different ISP. I have a few questions:
I will be using this for WFH/Gaming/Music TV Streaming/ Internet browsing. There are 2 people that will be using this internet. This is a 3bdrm townhouse, with 2 floors (and basement). Any help would be appreciated, thanks. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Nov 2021 01:05 AM PST Hey guys. I currently own a Cisco SG350-10 10 port switch and it is being limited to only 8 LAGGs. I saw a second hand listing for a 52port SG300 and i was really considering the upgrade. Do you know if it has the same limitation to the number of laggs? [link] [comments] |
question about what ports to use on my router Posted: 29 Nov 2021 03:14 PM PST So my router has a 2.5 WAN and a regular WAN port. Note that I have 1.2gb comcast plan with unlimited data. Do I plug in the modem's ethernet cable into the regular WAN port or the 2.5 WAN port? Can I plug in the ethernet cable to my switch into the 2.5 WAN port or do I have to plug that into a regular LAN port? EDIT: The router I'm referring to is the ASUS AXE11000 [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Nov 2021 04:03 PM PST Current setup is an Asus AC-66U on the first floor of 2, using both the router and wireless functions. I'm having some issues with WiFi connectivity on the second floor on the other side of the house. I suspect the signal is not quite strong enough. I wired most of the first floor with cat 6 as it was easy to get in the basement and drill up. As such, console, TV, computers on the first floor are all hard wired. I don't want to deal with going into the attic with blown insulation and putting in second story drops. I've considered hiring it out as I already have basement to attic conduit which would save the contractor some time, but I digress. The only abnormal use case is that we cut the cord and stream exclusively. The second story TVs have fire sticks. The 4k one is not particularly happy on either the 2.4 or 5 ghz WiFi. I just ordered a TP link Omada EAP245. I figure I could connect this in line with the first floor TV drop and either mount it to the wall or leave it on the entertainment center facing upwards. This room is directly below the second story room with poor WiFi. Does this sound like a good idea? Now the next question is, do I leave the Asus WiFi enabled since it's been working fine for most of the devices and configure the EAP245 with the same SSID and password? I suspect this may take some testing as the EAP245 may cover the whole house. Once the Asus kicks it, I wouldn't mind ditching the all in one, adding another EAP if necessary, and getting a modern router. I'd like to use the Asus as long as it's still working though. Posted: 29 Nov 2021 08:48 PM PST I will move to a area where only Xfinity has service, I was with at&t and the wifi was decent and I don't any issue with that, but now where I live at&t don't have any red, so I'm thinking to move to xfinity, I see that Xfinity offer 300mbps for 65$ with xfi included but I'm not sure if is really fast and can worth all that money 🤨 [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Nov 2021 03:45 PM PST Currently only a phone jack is set up, but there are some unused twisted pairs behind it. https://i.imgur.com/ZX0D5Fi.jpg Edit: Cable says "Steren(R) 300-" looks like its actually Cat6 ethernet! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Nov 2021 11:45 PM PST As it says here, they suspended my internet for not paying. payment was due 28. my provider offers thing called "boost button" where u pay small amount of money (3 Gel which is 1usd) to get 24h boost to maximum speeds. (for example, maximum is 100mbps here. if I had 40mbps plan, with 3 Gel I can get 100mbps for 24h) so I used that boost for once but noticed that instead of 24h, I had that speed for 1 week until I rebooted router. then I thought WHAT IF I dont pay at all, will I still get free internet unless I reboot router? well, now 2 days passed since they stopped service but I still have connection. I imagine there is something with router, like when you pull from tube once and water keeps pouring from it because of pressure. can someone explain what's happening? and can I get compensation/reward if I report it to provider? or should I keep using this exploit [link] [comments] |
Creating a bonded network with a traditional router and 4g LTE router? Posted: 29 Nov 2021 01:32 PM PST Has anyone set up something like this before? I've been trying to find information but it seems like there isn't much out there about this particular setup. Basically I want both connections to simultaneously work together (end user connects to 1 wifi connection or 1 ethernet connection but both connections are working together in the background), and if the traditional ISP goes offline then the cellular router will act as the backup and the end user doesn't notice anything different except maybe slower speeds. Have tried and everything and still get slow internet on ethernet Posted: 29 Nov 2021 11:10 PM PST So to start I was using wireless wifi and switched to ethernet hoping it would fix my slow internet speed. My downloads were faster but I still can't load web pages properly and certain apps on my computer. Pages and apps will sometimes load infinitely. Things like youtube or other pages that load an image or maybe audio usually take the longest. I have done every test possible to see if it was my DNS servers but I don't think it is. My speed test app even says that I'm not connected to the internet and this is a common error that will pop up on web pages if it takes too long to load. [link] [comments] |
Powerline vs Mesh for remote house with LTE internet Posted: 29 Nov 2021 11:10 PM PST So my girlfriend's parents live in a remote village of about 150 people. Therefore the only options for internet is DSl (20mbit max) or an LTE Router with an unlimited sim card (specifically for home use). They now have the latter option so the internet is not the most stable. The question lies more inside the house. They only have the one little router which of course can't cover the whole house, let alone one floor properly. Considering they are not keen on hardwiring to some access points or mesh. Would powerline be okay for their needs or a fully wireless mesh setup still be preferable? The house is a completely rebuilt old samll farm but the electrical wiring was also replaced about 20 years ago. So it shouldn't be too bad. [link] [comments] |
Security Camera Network Separate from Standard Wifi Network Posted: 29 Nov 2021 02:20 PM PST My family has 5 security cameras and other Nest/Google brand devices throughout the house. I also have an Orbi Mesh 2-router system with Xfinity modem on passthrough. On top of that, we've got a slew of TV's, computers, phones, media devices, etc. Is the best practice here to route all of our security/Nest devices to one of the Orbi routers as a separate network/subnet, so all devices are not drawing from the same frequencies and clogging up speed for the devices which require enough to stream 4k/game? Ethernet Speed Slower on Router Compared to Modem Posted: 29 Nov 2021 11:01 PM PST Some quick information: - 500mbps Internet plan - ROUTER: Orbi RBR20 with 2 satellites near each other running at 50% transmission power (quite a small house). - MODEM: Netgear CM1150v Docsis 3.1 - SWITCH: 8-port gigabit TP-Link (TL-SG108). - Speed test done mainly through testmy.net MODEM — no more than 38 feet cat 5e Ethernet —> ROUTER — pretty damn long cat5e cable, much longer than the one that connects the modem to the router —> SWITCH. So I connected my computer to the modem directly and got around 480mbps each time. When I connect directly to the switch, which is connected to the router, I get 320mbps directly on the main router and roughly the same on the satellites. Furthermore, WiFi drops me down to 120mbps. What could be the issue? Is it normal to not get the same Ethernet speed when connected to a switch connected to he main Orbi router compared to directly to the modem? Edit: I brought the router where the modem is and used a roughly 10 in shorter cat5e cable. I connected that to the router with that cable. I then connected the desktop computer with the same cable I used to connect it to the modem where I got 480mbps to the router. I got roughly 300 mbps so no change from before (actually speeds were worse lol). Looking at the Orbi configurations: - MU-MIMO = off - Fast roaming = off - Implicit beamforming = off - Guest network = off - 2.4ghz = auto - 5ghz = somewhere in the 40s I do have a smart home system with Zigbee being the main + a raspberry pi. The recent test with the computer directly linked to the router without the switch did not have the switch installed (zigbee system and such are all connected through there). [link] [comments] |
Stream IP camera feed to Youtube & Website?? Posted: 29 Nov 2021 05:57 AM PST I'm struggling to understand the best way to do this... Long story short, IP camera in a bird box, I want a continuous stream. Ideally, I don't want to have an entire PC running all the time. Luxuries would be to record clips on motion detection. Can I stream an IP camera feed to Youtube with an NVR? A Raspberry Pi? I'm looking for fairly uncomplicated. I am not great at coding. Any help appreciated :) [link] [comments] |
Help getting online new router Posted: 29 Nov 2021 02:10 PM PST Hey guys, networking noob here, trying to slowly understand everything (DHCP, WAN, etc. all terms driving me nuts). I just bought a new router as a first investment in to trying to upgrade our current setup, but it seems I've failed at the first hurdle as I can't even get online with it. I'll first say I've manually upgraded to the latest firmware (offline) to rule out that issue. I bought the ROG Rapture GT-AX11000, hoping to increase our Wi-fi range and upgrade to Wifi 6. But everytime I open the admin panel on the router, I'm met with "network cable unplugged" even when I try to plug in the DSL cable to the internet port on the ROG Rapture, when I try to plug an ethernet from the Old ISP router in to the internet port on the Rapture, nothing works, I've tried plugging it in to the LAN ports too. Feel like I've tried everything at this point but to no avail. At most I've gotten a different error on the router saying "Your ISPs DHCP does not function properly" my ISP is KPN (Netherlands). Also does not help that I am not Dutch, so searching for solutions on the ISPs site (if it is related to that) has not been easy. Below is some photos, I have the Modem (I think it's called) that was provided by the ISP, this is what we was using as our "router" and the ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 which I'm now hoping to use as the primary router. Can someone help me understand my setup a bit better and maybe even help me solve this problem to get online? I think it's a dual-wan (2x100mbps) setup with one dsl cable in the modem but don't even fully understand what I'm saying. https://imgur.com/vJA1jWy Old router/modem with DSL lines, two of them go in to one [link] [comments] |
Site to Site VPN for Cable TV Roku app Posted: 29 Nov 2021 03:22 PM PST I would like to setup a site to site VPN from my parents house to my house. There is a cable TV app that I want to use but it needs to be on the home wifi. I thought if I connected it through a VPN I could have the Roku connect to it and then I could use it. What would you recommend and any videos on how to set it up? I have OPENVPN Server setup on a raspberry pi but not sure how to connect the Roku. I thought the Server VPN could go to my parents house and then I could get another Pi and use that at my house and connect the Roku to it but Im not sure if I'm missing anything. If it works I would upgrade to better hardware. [link] [comments] |
