    Pc cant find bootable divice

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 01:52 PM PDT

Thanks in advance. Any help is welcome. If this is the wrong sub, I am sorry, new too this one.

    Notebook. Intel i5-6200U, Nvidia 940M with 2GB, 12GB DDR3, 128GB SSD + 1 TB HDD.

    1. Before Windows 10. Wanting to install Linux Ubuntu 20.04.3.

    2. Got the "ubuntu-20.04.3-desktop-amd.iso" from the official side. Flashed a 32GB USB-stick with the flashing tool balenaEtcher(wich I used in the past succesfully).

3.Opend boot manager and selected the USB-stick.

    1. Started the Ubuntu installation. Language english, keyboard as well, offline installation, normal installation and no third party software, I choosed to remove everything and install Ubuntu(Took that 128GB SSD, were windows was located before), selected my time zone, maked a pc name+ password and stuff, enter.

    2. Clicked button to restart. Device did restart. Screen says: Remove installation device and press enter. I did that.

    3. Then the pc got stuck in a boot-loop trying to find a bootable device(My interpretation). Screen shows :"Acer, explore beyond limits tm" Acer= name of the company. The screen was the normal screen that would apear if I would start the device.

Then a sec later in the left upper corner you can see "Reset System". Then the screen goes black and its going to show the acer.... screen again. Looping this.

I opend bios and tryed out to switch the Boot Mode from UEFI to legacy. Restarted. It then said something like: no bootable disk, insert a bootable divice and press any key to try again.

I switched out USB sticks. The integrety check of ubuntu said 100% was correct of the .iso . I tryed out diffrent USB ports. I tryed LTS version as well as ubuntu 21.10 .

New PSU: Loud Pop, Sparked, and Dead, what happened?

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 03:53 AM PDT

    Hi there!

My current 1200W PSU is dying and I need a new PSU

My computer is old so I did not want to spend too much and ordered this 1000W PSU

I received it today and swapped it out with my current PSU, less than a minute after logging into Windows, there was a loud pop and sparks coming from the PSU housing compartment, my computer shut off immediately and I unplugged everything, it fried my surge protector (Thank god for it, I never thought I would see the day)

Good news is that I put my current PSU back in and it is working, nothing dead (except my surge protector /sadface)

I would like to treat this as a life lesson, what could of caused it? A few things I could think of but quite not understand

    1. Was it because I bought a no-name brand PSU? There is not a lot of information about their brand but enough to gamble that it would work

    2. Was it because I bought 1000W instead of 1200W?

    3. My GPU used 2 8-pins PCI-E cables with my current PSU, with the new PSU I noticed there was 2 8-pins on 1 cable and opted for that instead of two separate cables, did that cause it?

    4. There was not enough Molex cables for my sound card, Asus Xonar Essence STX, so I decided not to use my single Molex cable for it but left it attached to my MoBo

    5. I did not change the pin connector for the fan connected to CPU FAN on my MoBo

Any recommendations for a 1200W PSU that won't explode?

    Let's discuss transferring files!!

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 11:50 AM PDT

Whats best practice in the following situations?

In all these examples, any reference to storage/hd/hard drive/disk will be referring to SSD technology Any reference to "cloud" will mean a service like Google drive, onedrive, Dropbox etc.

    Discuss

1.) Transferring data in groups of more frequent, smaller batches (20gb or less total size, for example) or transferring data all at once (say a directory with multiple files, folders etc) Is it a good idea to backup, say, a 120gb partition or directory tree in one single transfer to another hard drive/flash drive?

2.) Which is faster, or best practice: transferring from external USB storage to cloud storage (one transfer) - or transferring data to computer first from USB storage, then over onto the cloud? (Two file transfers with the computer acting as a mediary)

3.) Zipping files before transferring them anywhere - local, network/workgroup or to external cloud. Pros/cons?

4.) Transferring large backups/disk images: whats best practice for users with multiple media external hard-drives? Whats best practice for putting large disk-images on cloud storage?

Put my ssd into a prebuilt that was donated to me, ssd formatted itself, however 400/500 gb is taken up still?

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 10:23 AM PDT

    (crossposted from r/techsupport)

my step dad donated me his old build and we stuck my ssd into his rig, and fired it up, got everything set up. it turned off randomly.

turned back on and hard reset everything. there seemed to be NO other boot option in place either. it seems as though everything was formatted with the exception of a few programs (i dont know how) and when i go to "my pc" it says i have 400/500gb used up still. whats happening?

HELP! Water damage Mac book but I really need my data back (I'm an idiot I know)

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 06:26 AM PDT

    Hello Computer Wizards!

I recently had an incident involving a glass of water and my MacBook Pro.

Long story short, the apple store said that the cost of repair was over the value of the laptop and it was cheaper to purchase a new unit. But I recently realised that I've lost my final term university work on that computer and now I need to either recover or re do (this is 4 months intense work so it will take along time to repeat).

I don't really understand the full depth of the tech behind my Mac but is it possible to take my broken unit somewhere to have someone try and recover the hard drive? Or is this something I can attempt my self?

(I am usually a vigilant backeruper but I got much more lax in my final term and have learnt my lesson)

Please help and any suggestions are greatly appreciated!!

    Thank you so much

JLab AIR ANC right earbud will not charge

    Posted: 27 Oct 2021 09:02 PM PDT

Hey everyone, so as the title suggests, my right ear bud doesn't seem to light up while in the case, and to make issues a bit more complicated, the left one will not connect to my phone. So far I've tried the reboot (tap each bud 7 times then close the case…) and the left ear bud will light up, but nothing coming from the other one. I should also mention that it was a replacement ear bud as I lost the original in the River bed while running. Thank you in advance!

Can i join 2 8-pins molex cables together with a molex extension

    Posted: 27 Oct 2021 05:57 PM PDT

Putting together a new PSU today, the molex cable it came with is too short, could I join it with my old PSU's 8-pin cable (I won't plug this one into the PSU) via a molex extension cable (it has both male and female connecter)
