Posted: 01 Oct 2021 11:20 AM PDT OS EndeavourOS 5.14 kernel. This is the first issue I have had with Endeavour OS. Curious if anyone could tell me how to look into it. Last night I shut down my Laptop ( with EndOS on it). But, instead of shutting down normally It spit out a page of Text on the screen. I do not remember what the text was exactly but it look like common checks and no there were no warnings. But, it is not what usually happens. Usually it just shuts down without showing text. So, I do not know why that happened. But, the machine just froze there for about 5 minutes. I read what the text said but I couldn't make sense of it. So, after 5 minutes I just force the machine to shut down. I restarted to see if things were working it booted I was tired shut I just shut down again and this time it shut down normally. Today I log on and internet speeds are shit. It is taking 2 or 3 times longer to log reddit. I dual boot with windows and in windows things are running normal. Some connection same laptop. Things run just like it should. So, I want to know what is the linux equivalant of "Flushing the DNS" or resetting the network in linux. Also, is there a way I could check back logs to see what process ran last night and see if that has anything to do with it. I do not know what last night was but if I can identify it or shut it off that would great. [link] [comments] |
If I install a new program then where is it stored: /user/local/bin or /opt? Posted: 01 Oct 2021 03:12 AM PDT They seem the same to me and answers on the web don't clarify it for me. Applications like Firefox, I found it on the /usr/bin directory so I am really confused. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 01 Oct 2021 02:13 PM PDT I'm a huge fan of QEMU/KVM and just ran a Windows Experience Index against a Win11 VM running on a Debian Unstable host. Host specs: Dell Precision M4800 i7-4800MQ 8GB RAM Nvidia Quadro K1100M but using nouveau, not Nvidia. I gave the Win11 VM all eight cores and 4GB of RAM. Video is a bit slow, disk isn't bad at all. :) [link] [comments] |
Is it me or is Linux just NOT for musician's (NOOB RANT!!) Posted: 01 Oct 2021 02:11 PM PDT TL:DR Is it me or is Linux just not meant for Musicians, Artists & Animators just any of the artsy types I started my Linux journey at the start of September, I was extremely bored and the approaching date of Windows 11 coming out made me give Linux a spin. I'd say right from the bat it was a pretty hard process, my first few installs kept having bugs that would make the OS almost unusable and freeze up They were bugs I couldn't find the fix and no one on reddit would help me, my posts were always ignored on pop os and downvoted. After a while I started to kind of get my flow going, I'm a pretty hardcore gamer, all of my friends and I play games together on discord cause some of my friends went off to college in other states so this is our only way of "hanging out" My fav setup was PopOS + KDE it was perfect but but there was one major deal breaker that will keep me from ever considering Linux as a main os.......... IS LINUX EVEN POSSIBLE TO BE USED AS A MAIN MUSIC PRODUCTION OS??????? My microphone had random static that my friends said my mic had in discord and when recording audio into a DAW i heard it as well, There's no guide online that could help me fix it, my native DAW that I've used for over 10 years isn't native to Linux but runs pretty well under wine, the issue is Midi controllers have an ungodly amount of latency and its really hard to make music that way. Every VST is made for windows and the bigger ones are made for Mac & Windows but I've yet to see something like Serum ported over to Linux cause honestly whatever is handling the Audio is just not good. Though out all the Distros I've used I've had these issues with audio (and yes I have tried other PCS)

Posted: 01 Oct 2021 11:48 AM PDT I started setting up "pass" as my password manager and it's working well so far, except "passmenu" which doesn't seem to work. On the website it says that it's included in the install, but when i run "passmenu" in the terminal it says "passmenu: command not found". dmenu is installed and i ran "apt update && apt upgrade", pass is on version 1.7.3 right now (it seems to be the newest version in the repo, even tho the git repo is on version 1.7.4). Also i'm running Ubuntu 21.04. Is there anything i'm missing here? Any help would be appreciated, thanks! [link] [comments] |
Need some help with partitions after fresh install Posted: 01 Oct 2021 11:38 AM PDT Hey everyone I'm fairly new to the Linux world and have been running ubuntu 20.04 for a couple of months. A few weeks ago I updated to 21.04 without checking to see if a few things I need were compatible, stupid on my part I know. Since I haven't officially switched to Linux as my daily driver yet and there were no files I needed to back up I figured I would just do a fresh install of 20.04. When installing I selected the option to erase only the disk with ubuntu 21.04 installed and then replace it with 20.04 and everything went just fine. Later that day I went to install a few games from steam and was told I don't have enough space.after looking into it a bit I found that the partition I was on only had about 32gb of space and t a partition from my previous install (400+gb) was still there and had all my files on it. Is there a way to merge these two partitions or switch to which partition is being used? Please let me know if there's anything I can add or explain better and thank you in advance for helping! Posted: 01 Oct 2021 11:37 AM PDT I was following this tutorial (on Arco) and I was able to make it work, however after system update and restart it broke. output. I have tried: https://arcolinuxforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=2167 and I would have tried https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=258368, but the github page it leads to is missing. Edit: I did something and now I see the conky, but not the one I downloaded (nor the default one) and the error message is still present. [link] [comments] |
BASH Scripting novice question Posted: 30 Sep 2021 08:00 PM PDT What is /bin/bash directory? I am learning a bit about scripting in BASH shell but I am not really sure about the mechanics and processes involved when I $ nano and then flag #!/bin/bash I am only watching introductory tutorials at this point, and would like a framework explanation on how scripting in BASH works. In particular, where are scripts stored (in /bin/bash ? if so, I don't see a BASH folder within) and how these scripts are executed. For example, I see someone enter $ ./scriptname to run the script after making it an executable, but can't they be run another way using a path? [link] [comments] |

Is there a trick for booting from an external hard drive? Posted: 01 Oct 2021 01:53 PM PDT I have Linux on an external hard drive and I can plug it in to just about any computer and boot and it'll come up just fine. But I have this one laptop where I just get right into the OS on the main system (Windows 10). I have the boot order set in bios to boot the drive first. This is a managed device. Would that play into it? This is a newer Lenovo. All helpful tips welcome! Thank you! [link] [comments] |

Windows 10 + Ubuntu Dual Boot Space Allocation Problem Posted: 01 Oct 2021 09:55 AM PDT Hello, I've recently installed Ubuntu alongside Windows 10 using this guide. The problem that I have is that I've allocated 200 GB of free space for my Ubuntu installation. I've made it 20 GB for the "root" partition, and the /home, as the remaining space. When I click on install now (I've tried for both root and /home), and for some reason, when going inside Ubuntu, it states that I just have 20 GB as free space. I can't even see the remaining amount available (180 GB). What I really want is that Ubuntu is partitioned under the 180GB and not the 15GB. Is there a way to re-allocate the remaining 180 GB into the 15GB, or will I have to re-install Ubuntu but a different way. [link] [comments] |
I need help to install and choose a lightweight distro for my Acer Aspire ES ES1-131 laptop Posted: 01 Oct 2021 12:37 AM PDT Hello everyone! I currently have a Acer Aspire ES ES1-131 laptop with 2gb ram that has windows 10 installed in it but it works very slowly even for simple browsing, I even ran a debloat script and I have little to no data/programs installed in it even then it struggles to perform some basic tasks like attending online class. So, I want to install a linux distro that is beginner friendly (although I have a some experience with linux like running it in a VM) but last time I tried to install linux dual booting with windows 10 I ended by bricking my laptop (but that's a story for another time). So I want to know what prerequisites should I do before installing linux like that secure boot thing and checking if my hdd/sdd is gpt or mbr etc. I have searched through the google and reddit and found out that people were have trouble installing linux on this particular model so please do let me know if it is possible to install linux on this device with minimal tinkering. tl;dr I want to install a aesthetic linux ditro on a low end pc that can perform basic tasks. Thank you in advance! [link] [comments] |
I wanted to install Linux Mint in Dual Boot on another partition but I think I messed up Posted: 01 Oct 2021 01:03 PM PDT So I shrinked the Windows default partition to make space for the new OS, and I proceded with the installation. When I installed Mint it didn't let me choose in which partition to install Mint, I figured it would choose the empty one by default but apparently it chose the one where Windows is installed. Is there a way to migrate the whole OS to the empty one? Or am I stuck with two OSs on the same partition? Sorry for the dumb question but it's my first time doing something like this and I'm very confused. [link] [comments] |

Looking for a portable Linux distro Posted: 01 Oct 2021 06:44 AM PDT Title is quite vague but basically I'm looking to have a Linux distro that will run off a USB stick that I can take with me and use on any computer. Some criteria that I'm looking for specifically:
I think those points alone are a lot to ask for and honestly I don't know if all that is possible but I'd be stoked if it is and if anyone can suggest something that comes even remotely close to that. Thanks in advance. Edit: on a side note, is it the case that all "live" versions of distros (e.g. Ubuntu live USB version) run entirely on ram? I would assume not and that it runs on the storage of the USB stick itself unless the distro was specifically made to be run on ram but I'm also not sure. [link] [comments] |

Windows 10 Disable Animations Equivalent for Xubuntu Posted: 01 Oct 2021 10:51 AM PDT Greetings! I've been experimenting with many variants of Ubuntu and have a dual booted system (Win 10 + Xubuntu). So, my Windows system itself is heavily customized but one very cool thing (in my opinion) is "disabled animations". Not only does this disable animations for most programs, it also disables a lot of unnecessary animation things (at least those that I used to find unnecessary) on browsers as well. I've been trying to get the same implemented on Linux but so far, haven't been able to get anything working. Any advice? [link] [comments] |
can you control any hardware periferals without its original software Posted: 01 Oct 2021 06:20 AM PDT so not long time ago i found out about v4l2 or something like that and i havent explored it yet but from what i saw it looks like you can ask your device what you can control, it will show you everything u can do with it and then u can control it. does it work like this and can you really control everything? cuz that would be awesome. like if i wanted to use some features on my razer kiyo pro i couldnt cuz synapse isnt on linux but now i could turn on hdr mode, change focus lenght and such. anyone got experience with this? can anyone confirm if this is true? ty [link] [comments] |
