I couldn't find a job as a scientist, so I became Software Developer Posted: 03 Oct 2021 01:00 AM PDT I finished my PhD in Organic Chemistry this August and I started looking for a job. At first I applied for post-docs, but due to my personal life I could go abroad for few years. So I applied for jobs that are related to my education, but I got no response after a month...So I applied for positions that required only basic education in chemistry and no experience... Nothing. Take into account that PhD student in my country get minimal wage during study so my savings were pretty small. I talked with a friend that used to be physiotherapist, but it wasn't a good money and job was very hard physically... so he learned Python and after a year or so got a job as Junior Python Dev with 2x his previous pay... Today he is Mid Dev with 3x his previous salary. He told me to apply for Junior Python Developer, because I made a few pieces of software during my study to help me with data processing and I even wanted to set up our department webpage with a Django and he said that it's more then enough for Junior Developer job. I also take part in game jams whenever I can (I have 12 games done and I even won small jam 2 times). I didn't believe that I'm good enough, but with no income and my saving melting I made a resume with all my projects listed and applied for a few positions related to Python and Django on the first weekend of September. I got 4 interviews in the next week which was crazy. One company from one of the major cities invited me to HR interview on Monday and final Interview on Friday. I was stressed as hell and I was preparing for an interview the whole week. The interview was super cool. It was a small company and devs were very interested in games I made (one of them even played one of the games on the interview videocall LOL).Tthey asked me some Python questions and I knew the answers, even tho my answers weren't very technical, because I have no CS degree so I describing how I understand it.They asked about SQL and I knew the basics and told them straight away what I don't know. They asked about Django and restAPI and I knew how it works in general and they asked me to make a simple project that display data in webpage (Like a "Hello World"). So with a bit of struggle I did. They told me that they are very satisfied and they will give me an answer until next Friday, because they have interview with other people until Wednesday... I wasn't expecting much.More people = more chances that there will be someone better. But on Thursday I got an email saying "You got this job!" in the title. At first I thought it's a spam from job searching pages, but no. It was from the company I talked to. They offered me much more then I asked for (3x times my salary at PhD), bunch of benefits and God knows what else. Of course I accepted straight away. Tomorrow is my first day at work. I'm excited, but also scared that I'm still not good enough so I wanted to share my feelings [link] [comments] |
1 year of I.T. Helpdesk Experience, want in on Cybersecurity. Let's discuss? Posted: 03 Oct 2021 08:57 AM PDT Hi all, Title essentially says it all. I have 1 year of INTERNAL I.T. Helpdesk experience and I want to try for Cybersecurity. My plan is as follows: - Study and obtain COMPTIA Security+ and possibly CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) (Thanks to u/ricestocks) - Attend hackercons/participate in Competitive CTFs (Shoutout to u/VA_Network_Nerd) - Obtain job in Cybersecurity (In whatever state, I can move) - Maybe get OSCP PEN-200 (about 1K, prefer if business can pay for it) - Obtain CISSP after 5 years -.- To complicate things, I am in Australia. I'm looking at the Cybersecurity job market and jobs appear to be primarily for Ex-Pats (previous military persons) How likely is my current plan? Lay it on me. [link] [comments] |
I landed my first job in IT with no degree or certs! Posted: 02 Oct 2021 03:23 PM PDT Hello everyone and welcome to my story! I have been watching this Subreddit for a few years now and gained so much information in that time in what to expect, how to go about learning in a new environment, and how to be successful in ny new career. I hope my post helps just one person believe they can do it and to make the jump into a life in IT. My story starts when I was 21 living a pretty crappy life - No money, structure, sense of worth. I was a walking ball of shame essentially! I was able to land a job working for a call center that is contracted out by Verizon. My time here was short as the management style and work culture was very toxic. I luckily was able to land a job a month after working for an ISP focusing on Internet troubleshooting. Life was great I had a steady 9-5 that payed well considering my exp at the time. I loved it the first year as I just tried to be a sponge and soak up all the knowledge around me. After a year and a half that had faded as I mastered the proprietary systems and was one of the top technical support agents in the company.( I still have the certificate they gave me when I was ranked 12 out of 4,567 other techs in the company nation wide). I realized my time was coming to a close with them. I began sending out my resume hoping that the little technical experience would help me land something entry level. It did not haha! I did got a lot of interviews and they loved my personality and me as a person but I was just too under-qualified as I can certainly see now that I have been in the field for a year. I was able to land a job for a Canadian based Password management company shortly after the failed interviews though! I was doing Mac, iOS, and Windows technical support for them which gave me a better understanding of the difference in device ecosystems. Then, on a cold night I received an email from a msp I had applied to and made it to the final interview with. They wanted to hire me as they had some openings and could take on training me from the ground up. After a chat with the CEO I started the next week. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Oct 2021 08:53 AM PDT From lurking this sub for the past few years, I understand that I haven't exactly been flooring the gas pedal of my career path and have gotten a bit complacent. I have no degree or certs and have been letting my experience and connections do pretty much all of the talking. Started straight out of high school with the title of computer technician, ($28k/yr) for 5 years, then out of desperation I moved to a small MSP with the title of IT Consultant ($32k/yr) for 5 years. Once I realized how badly I was getting shafted in pay for the MSP, I landed a Helpdesk Tech lvl 2 ($58k/yr) position almost 5 years ago. Even though it felt like a slightly less than lateral move, having my salary almost double like that was a bit life changing and allowed me to (sort of) live comfortably for the first time in my life. Now I know why I've gotten complacent as this current helpdesk job offers luckily ZERO work stress and doesn't exactly challenge my skillset. I've been promised a promotion to level 3/Lead position "soon" for the past year and I'll likely end up taking it if I don't figure things out. My problem is, I'm not sure I want to grow old in helpdesk (If at 33 I haven't done that already). Of course I'd love to make more money AND have a more interesting work day, but as I said, I'm a bit lost here. Late last year, I thought I had my foot in the door (a connection through my current boss) on a Jr. Virtualization Admin position but got passed over last minute. The idea of managing virtual systems did interest me, so I like the idea anyways. Is there a particular path that my work experience would be more beneficial in than others? I'd love to start working on certs. 4th largest city in the US btw. EDIT: Guys, I get it. I whole heartedly agree that I haven't been taking my career as seriously as I should. That's a 1000% justifiable critique. I'm posting because I'm looking to change that. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Oct 2021 07:03 AM PDT I'm in a good Cybersecurity leadership position, paid well, relatively happy with the work, I've been with my company about 6 years, and I'm very comfortable in my role. I see some opportunities for additional advancement even in the company I work for. However, I'm left with two big things that keep me up at night.
Would you recommend that I play the conservative move and stay with my company? Or take some risks in the hopes that I'll grow and have the potential for massive pay offs? [link] [comments] |
Question about where a job lands on the amazing “IT Career Path” chart Posted: 03 Oct 2021 04:08 AM PDT I've seen this wonderful graphic put together a couple times now : https://www.reddit.com/r/ITCareerQuestions/comments/dbjkdx/oc_common_it_career_paths_roadmap_visual_2020/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf Where would a Data Center Technician fall on this chart? Using that chart, I'd say it's a blend of Network Tech and Hardware Tech. I'm just curious about where it could lead to. [link] [comments] |
If you’ve worked forGeek Squad, what was your experience? Posted: 03 Oct 2021 05:00 AM PDT Not sure if this is the right place for this question. But has anyone here worked for Best Buy's Geek Squad? I am in school for IT at the moment and just got hired on with the Geek Squad in my area. Is this a good place to get my feet wet and gain some practical experience? [link] [comments] |
New Grad Question for Help Desk Interview I have tomorrow Posted: 03 Oct 2021 08:32 AM PDT Hello I have a help desk interview tomorrow. I am curious what questions/topics you were asked on your job. How did you go about asking salary and benefits (did you wait to near the end of the interview or not). What benefits should I ask for? Would I receive the job offer on the spot or would I have to wait and hear back from them. This is NYC based job so what salary should I be looking for? Im a new graduate and this would be my first job looking to grind my way up. Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Oct 2021 04:10 AM PDT I'll start by saying I am 30 years old and have always loved tinkering with computers and am wondering how I get my foot into the door of this line of work. I wouldn't even know where to begin to start. My whole life I've been hesitant to do anything for fear of fucking up what little I have and that's getting me nowhere, so I need to do something else now. How did everyone first get their start in this field? I feel like in this day and age you need a degree to even be considered for a $40,000- $50,000 job. I don't know where to begin! I can build computers. I'm a little rusty but I can do that in a couple hours. Microsoft office is something I'm very familiar with except for access and minor knowledge of Excel. Hell I even hacked into a windows 10 laptop without the password one time, but I don't know how that gets me a good paying job... Any advice for a guy that is trying to make something of his life in this field would help a lot. [link] [comments] |
What is the skillset called for things like AD,GPO, windows server etc? Posted: 03 Oct 2021 07:35 AM PDT Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I am currently making a Linkedin profile and can't figure out a quick way to say "yes I have knowledge on the traditional on-prem tools such as AD,GPO etc." I have put things like MS365 administration (I'm going for quick short bullet points) but I have no idea how to describe this? Like I want to say something similar to "I have developed skills within the MS365 suite" but for AD,GPO instead of MS365. Sorry guys! and thank you in advance! [link] [comments] |

I am having trouble finding any information about working in the IT department for restaurants Posted: 02 Oct 2021 11:41 PM PDT I am trying to be as prepared as I can be for my follow up interview to work as a restaurant systems manager. Everywhere I look online just pulls up "Working in a restaurant" (like as a server, cook, etc) and pulls up nothing about fixing hardware or fixing the POS systems themselves in a restaurant. Does anyone have any experience working for the IT department for a restaurant group that can give me a better overview of what that job looks like and what I should absolutely need to know before my interview next week? Thank you all in advance! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Oct 2021 05:10 AM PDT Hey guys im 27 male, janitor at some clinic for 5yrs now.i also do other medical functions but never gotten paid for any.(long story) Frankly speaking most people dont even know im a janitor bcos i dnt dress like 1 and patients mostly meet me running various tests on them in fancy offices(hate my life every day i wake up preparing for that job,i basicly just sedate myself the entire 5/6 days). Iv always been into tech but never took the career path at the time bcos i had tons of responsibility to sort out and the janitor position was the only open space i found at the time and i needed the money.Yep i ended up inheriting 3 other functions at the clinic bcos of my intellectual and skilled knowledge towards medical jobs yet never paid nor compensated for any work i did out of my cleaning job bcos of lack of certification to back the medical functions. so im considering a career shift into cybersecurity hoping to land somewhere in the information security engineering sector. Been doing some findings and i know i can skip A+ (thats like basic stuff im well vested in!) I also know i need network ,security, probably pentesting certs and coding skills.what i dont know is which pathway to follow....Comptia or Cisco else what other alternatives. Feel free to enlighten/correct me on anything.i really appreciate the quality of reliable info from this community.its just amazing [link] [comments] |
Question from a person living in Africa looking for any remote job Posted: 03 Oct 2021 12:30 AM PDT I have been working as a developer for the past three years and want to up my skill/pay. I have been looking at stack overflow and other sites remote offers but I feel that I am not qualified enough. Skill sets I have are related to data, like integration (oracle integration cloud, nifi and I have dabbled with some other open source tools.), Python/pandas, presentation platforms like superset/tableau. I am usually keen and fast to learn new things and have done some hobby/off work JavaScript, React, Laravel etc.. Is there any chance I would land a a remote job considering my location? Transitioning from the Military in a Year. Need some guidance. Posted: 02 Oct 2021 07:26 PM PDT In about a year I will be transitioning from the Marine Corps and I am now deciding what path in the IT field I should focus on. Currently I am Systems Administrator ( MOS is 6694 ALIMS) comparable to a junior sys admin. Although it is questionable. I work mostly in a medium sized LAN that hosts multiple production Servers (both windows and Linux enterprise) in a Vmware environment. I also have done a ton of desktop support and imaged and deployed workstations. The only certification I have is Comptia Security+. My goal is to have maybe 2 or 3 more certs under my belt before I transition and land a entry level or junior sys admin position. The issue is there is so many certs it is hard to choose. I dont want to end up wasting my time on a cert if it ends up being fruitless. My ultimate goal in the end is to work my way up to being in a DevOps environment or in a cloud professional position. Obviously I am not there yet. I was thinking of getting certs that compliment the experience I already have. So I was thinking of getting a Linux+ cert or a windows cert. I was also thinking about getting a cloud cert like AWS or AZURE but hesitant as I have no experience in those types of environments and the positions I have looked at want you to know scripting which I have yet to dabble my hands in. Is it worth the time to get these certs? Do you have recommendations for Certs I can look into? I have a family and need to find work as soon as I leave the military. I want to be as marketable as I can so that this transition is easier for myself and my family. Thank you for any advice. [link] [comments] |

Which CCNP to go for after CCNA unsure of which direction to take. Posted: 02 Oct 2021 09:21 PM PDT Recently got my CCNA, While it's great and has opened a lot of doors for me. I noticed there are not a lot of jobs compatible with CCNA, I say this because most jobs are looking for Wireless Engineers, Security Engineers, Cloud Engineers or Automation Engineers. I am not seeming to find many opportunities with just CCNA as a Junior or Regular Network Engineer seems as though a lot of companies even want CCNP as a bare minimum and are not even considering CCNA and it appears some expect you to be CCIE. Perhaps some type of sift is happening and regular CCNA is not as desirable, I would consider myself in a great area for tech as well. Anyway, I was looking at doing Security, Enterprise, Service Provider or Data Center for CCNP but I am not sure how to narrow down what makes the most sense. I am kinda leaning towards security the most but would probably focus on automation with Enterprise, Data Center and Service Provider regardless of which one I choose. Any feedback or insight on what would help me make the best decision? [link] [comments] |
Public School Band Director looking to Switch Careers to IT in the DFW area. Posted: 02 Oct 2021 07:00 PM PDT Title is my situation. I am currently going through a Mike Meyers A+ course on udemy, trying to make connections with other IT professionals on linkedin, and have started the networking section of the Google support professional certificate on coursera. I don't want to work in education after this year if I don't have to, would love to be able to land a similarly paying job by the summer of 22. Is this feasible? Am I studying the right things? What should I add or replace? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
