Access point Ethernet cable length question

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 05:42 PM PDT

I picked up a TP-Link EAP225 access point to try to solve my wifi dead spot woes. The instructions say that the ethernet cable that plugs into the switch thing (I forget what it's called) can be a maximum of 100 ft. Is it okay to go over this a little bit, by maybe 25 ft or less, or would that make a significant difference? Thanks in advance for any tips.

EDIT: Oops, misread the directions, it says 100m. All good then!

How do I get internet at a non-internet wired structure on my property?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 06:10 AM PDT

    My house has cable internet.
I have an old pool house about 80 feet from my house. It has one big room and a little bathroom.

It has electricity but obviously no cable or internet hookups.

I just started working from home and my husband suggested that we could clean it up, renovate it a bit and turn that into my private and quiet WFH office.

My job requires me to work on a hard-wired connection.
I cannot work using a wireless connection. But I still want WiFi at my house.

I already pay Spectrum for the internet at my house.

I am not tech-savvy and have zero idea what needs to be done to make this a reality.

How do I accomplish what I want to do? Is it even possible?

I need an ELI5 answer lol.

Multiple APs with the same SSID: how do clients know which one to connect to?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 03:35 PM PDT

    Hello sub!

Firstly this is just a theoretical question. I know many of you have a professional background in tech/CS. I don't. A mere hobbyist.

The plan for my down-the-road home network (pending ... home ownership) is something pretty unadventurous from a wireless perspective. Wire the whole place up with ethernet and set up a bunch of APs including one weatherproof one in whatever outdoor space we may perhaps one day own. Ubiquiti or something of that nature.

I understand that the common practice is to simple assign the same SSID to all the APs in your network so that you don't end up with the mess of transmitters that each create a different SSID upon rebroadcast. The clients will automatically connect to the AP broadcasting that SSID with the best signal.

My question is how this actually works (technically) under the hood: as in on the client level.

Thinking through this, for your average wireless adapter to be able to move seamlessly between a wireless network that was actually comprised of multiple WiFi APs:

    - Wouldn't it basically need to be monitoring multiple APs all at the same time?

    - And then determining - also in real time - which of those had the strongest signal?

Basically - on a technical level - how does this all work? And is whatever tech is used to hone clients in on the best AP when multiple are together creating one network on the client side or on the network devices themselves?

I know that this is the normative setup in public WiFi spots with a lot of foot traffic (airports, university campuses etc).

Clearly your average person accessing the public hotspot isn't going to be expected to have any special hardware. So I assume whatever "magic" makes this work is something that pretty much all wireless adapters on the market can do out of the box.

Can I have two ISP's at one house?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 01:56 PM PDT

Currently im in a house with 3 other people and we all use the same Centurylink internet, which we're using a C4000 Modem that isnt working. So basically no internet atm, as im relying on a hotspot. Plus the person who is in charge of the internet is the owner of the house and its taking a long time for them to either send a tech or for him to fix it himself.

Im considering asking for my own internet down in my room , but im unsure if i'm allowed to? And if I am will it be battling with the Centurylink internet making it slow?

How do I get my TP-Link AX1500 into Access Point mode? (and actually working?)

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 07:35 PM PDT

    My setup:

    • Linksys AC1900 in the bedroom closet feeding internet into a D-Link 16-Port Gigabit Switch (DGS-1016A)
    • New build (2018) with at least one CAT6 port in each room (cable I ran myself, all running into the 16-Port switch)
    • A new TP-Link AX1500 router I want to run in Access Point mode to push stronger Wi-Fi to my garage/front exterior of the house (Wi-Fi cameras)

I plugged a CAT6 cable from the port in the guest room into the WAN port on the AX1500. The internet light is orange. I managed to get into the configuration settings my connecting to the 5G network it was broadcasting (with no internet), went through some of the setup, but clicked on 'Change Mode' and moved it from Wireless Router Mode to Access Point mode.

The router rebooted, but when it tried to direct to http://tplinkwifi.net, I get an error page:

    Trying to configure the Router?

It looks like you aren't connected to your TP-Link network.

To access tplinkwifi.net, your device must be connected to TP-Link Router's network. Please check your network connection and try again.

I feel like my setup is correct, especially based off of their own graphic: Operation Mode Graphic

Just wondering if anyone can direct me to the best way to get this resolved. Thank you, r/HomeNetworking!

Does quality of an ethernet cable limit the connection speed?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 08:50 PM PDT

I have a 20-metre cheap cat5e which has 8 wires are properly terminated (tested with a multimeter) but I only get 100Mbps when connecting it to Gbps-capable devices. Why?

Help setting up port forwarding for NAS...

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 08:35 PM PDT

I'm trying to set up the port forwarding(virtual server) for my Synology NAS on the Taotronics mesh but am really confused.

I have ATT fiber and had set the gateway to pass through mode to avoid double NAT, wifi off, DHCP static + assign the MAC of the wired mesh router.
I even tried opening the port under ATT's NAT/gaming section for NAS (Port 50 tcp if my memory was correct.)

On the Synology, it keeps saying I have multiple router in the setting but not sure it's pointing to gateway+taotronics or the 3 mesh router (2 wired, 1 wireless)

And of course the TT-ND01 is not on the Synology supporting list, so I have to manually set up rules in the Taotronics mesh APP.
(also, the DSM7 system has a bug under the set up router part. If your router is not on the list, it doesn't let you click next to finish the set up process. It says you can set up from the router manually but the message window just won't close.)

I tried putting the port that Synology website suggested, but it doesn't do anything...Not sure if this is the ATT gateway issue or the mesh or both...

    Help, anyone?

    Thanks in advance!

Route devices through router to another router with multiple interfaces

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 07:12 PM PDT

    Maybe a novice question.

I have a Raspberry Pi acting as an access point for a laptop at home. The wlan0 interface is a 10.1.1.0/24 network. I have a PC connected via ethernet (eth0) to the RPi on a 10.1.2.0/24 network.

The RPi is connected to the internet on eth1 as 192.168.42.0/24 (through another router, thus no public IP address).

The RPi can connect to the internet, and all connected devices can connect to each other through 10.1.1.1 or 10.1.2.1 (both are the RPi) as default gateway. But connected devices (laptop) can not connect to the internet (even though tracepath says they are trying to route through the RPi, as expected).

This isn't a real problem, but I wanted to solve it because I feel like I almost have it and I feel like the problem is a more general question about how to route one network from one router to another router. Thanks for any pointers/ideas.

Edit: I guess I didn't actually state my question. Oops.

tldr: I have a RPi connected to the internet through another router on 192.168.42.0/24 with a WiFi AP on 10.1.1.0/24. Devices on the 10.x network can talk to each other, but they can't access the internet through 192.168.x. How can I properly route my 10.x devices through the RPi through to the 192.168.x network on the phone?

Logic check my troubleshooting please? Suspected DHCP issue somewhere between bridged modem, unifi switch, unifi Wireless AP.

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 06:51 PM PDT

Thanks for taking the time. Root symptom is that clients cannot connect to Wireless AP because they are not assigned an IP address.

Helping friends of mine cut the cord with their cable provide in order to save money. As a result they kept just Xfinity internet service and had their after market modem provisioned by Comcast and works fine. It's a motorola cable modem that operates in bridge mode out of the box. Internet to/from their house at at this point works fine. You can plug into the modem and access all you need.

Next (logically south of this point) we have a Unifi POE switch. This connects modem to my laptop which has the Unifi controller software. This switch also serves data and power to the Unifi Wireless Access Point (WAP). If you plug into the switch with any other device, Internet works fine also.

Both switch and WAP have been adopted and provisioned by the Unifi software controller. All local firewalls and common problems have been disabled. Firmware on all three devices is current. Everything is on the same subnet.

    Problem starts here?

Switch IP address shows the routable IP of the third party modem. Again, it's in bridge mode out of the box. No big deal I guess?

WAP, connected via POE port to the switch is defaulting to a 192.168.x IP. At this point, the two cannot work per Unifi software as theyre not on the same subnet.

I have tried every combination of DHCP and Static IP configurations I can think of. Here is where I am at currently with 1,2,3, representing logical hops from ISP to internal WAP. Any thoughts helpful!

    1. MODEM -> Static (ish) assigned routable IP from Xfinity. I have no method of controlling its config.
    2. Internal Unifi Switch (192.168.x static IP) with #1 as Gateway and primary DNS. By default, this shows up as #1's routable IP.
    3. WAP connected via POE port on #2. Statically assigned IP within the 192.168.x range that isnt already in use, and configured to use #2's internal address as its own gateway and DNS.

in other words: Internet -> Switch -> WAP. Internet and switch think they're both the gateway and WAP is in the dark.

NAS has multiple 2.5 gigabit ethernet ports, how useful is this?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 08:59 AM PDT

I bought a NAS which has 4x Realtek RTL8125 2.5 gigabit ethernet ports.

What are the benefits of connecting all 4 ports to my switch instead of just 1? My switch (TL-SG1016DE) and the rest of the network is still only 1 gigabit.

I do have multiple devices which are accessing the NAS at the same time:

    • Server will use the NAS as storage for torrents
    • PC will access NAS contents from time to time and reorganize files between drives
    • HTPC will stream videos as-is (no hardware encoding)
    • PC and Laptop will run Clonezilla backups once a week, laptop backup image is around 300GB.

Will I benefit from using all 4 ports?

All the drives in the NAS are 7200rpm drives

What modem/router do I need for WIFI?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 04:00 PM PDT

I am currently testing out with a at&t 2wire which has a rj11 entrance. If I connect it to the rj11 outlet it should work right? (It's not working)

I have opend up the wall plate and it has 4 pair/8 wires (blue, green, brown, orange, all with their white pair) and only the blue, and white blue are connected. Am I supposed to connect the orange and white for it to work or is this only giving phone line?

Can I replace it with a rj45 and another gateway?

It also has a coax cable, but how do I know it is setup? From my understanding, only if I buy another internet service that requires the coax, it will work.

    Mesh Networks

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 11:47 AM PDT

    Hello!

Do mesh network access points need to be wired via Ethernet?

I have a scenario where there is one Ethernet port for the entire house and it's on one corner of the house. I need to extend the range of the WiFi to cover the other side of the house. Would mesh networks work better here? Or should I just get a network extender?

    Thanks

    All connection hardware is disconnected

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 03:25 PM PDT

My surface pro 7 won't recognize any wifi or Bluetooth connections. Troubleshooting hasn't worked. When I troubleshoot, I try finding all network adapter problems, and it finds a problem with the driver for the wifi adapter. So I click "try these repairs as an administrator". It looks for the problems and it says "the same thing, but it can't fix it.

So I tried "network reset" yesterday and that didn't work. Today I tried the "netsh windows reset" thing in command prompt (as many others with the same message have had that solve the issue) and that didn't work either. I don't want to mess anything up more than it already is since I'm totally inexperienced in this sort of stuff, but I don't know what to do here.

Clicking on "view hardware and connection properties" shows that as the title says my Bluetooth, ethernet, and wi-fi are all disconnected. I would assume ethernet is disconnected because I don't have one plugged in, as it also says "not present" for the status. But Bluetooth's status is "not operational" and wife's status is "operational".

Also, this seems to have just came out of no where. The other night I was using it for homework with all connections working fine, plugged it in to charge until morning, tried using it when I got to school and it was all messed up and wouldn't connect at all. It won't recognize my wifi at home or school at all and I'm just totally lost. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated.

Why is the Internet getting so cheap?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 02:35 PM PDT

Hey there! I just browsed a little threw the actual internet tariffs, compared the plans and providers a bit and was surprised when I saw that e.g. Magenta offers a 5G tariff for 60 Euro/month with unlimited data and 500 Mbit/s speed and a 4G tariff for 28 Euro/month with unlimited data and 50 Mbit speed. This means a theoretical added value of not quite 500%. Why is 5G so much cheaper than 4G? I mean, I am aware that 500 Mbit/s must be understood as a maximum possible value that is unlikely to be reached under real conditions. But still, the example is well calculable even with realistic average values and with other providers and taking into account the usual price reductions regarding switchover marketing. So I wonder why 5G is so much cheaper than 4G? Can anyone explain this to me?

I live in the uk in uni accommodation and the internet provider the housing company chose sucks. Is there some way of me getting my own internet?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 01:51 PM PDT

Hi guys and thank you In advance for any help and I hope this is the right sub.I mainly use the internet for gaming and watching Netflix etc but the internet is so bad I can't even do online lecture zoom calls as it's so bad. The internet provider the housing company used seems to have very low bandwidth and isn't very stable at all. So far what i have done is bought a small router from a phone service provider that i put my sim card into and use 4G. This works fine for uni work and streaming however the ping is very high so for gaming this doesn't work. Is anyone able to give advice on what I could do to get this sorted. I'm fine paying for my own internet if needs be idk if it would have to be wired in though

    Thanks,

    Cable 2 and 3 of CAT6a unresponsive

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 12:46 PM PDT

TL;DR I have an armoured CAT6a cable running from my external office to my house via a Rj45 port at either end (568B style). Was working fine as my link between my Asus router, and my Asus node in the office. Now it will only connect wirelessly.

So I'm in the UK, and am purely a DIY enthusiast

I have an RT-AX82U as my router, and a RT-AC86U working as a "node" in my office.

The signal is very weak wirelessly, so I have lain a length of armoured CAT6a, ending at RJ45 ethernet ports. They are wired in with the 568B format. This has then let me plug the two together as an access point for perfect signal.

Recently (passed week or so) my signal started getting really spotty, with high pings in multiplayer games and taking forever to load large documents online. I've picked up a network cable checker and plugged them into either end of the new ethernet ports.

Lights 2 and 3 don't light up, so I've tried rewiring the RJ45 sockets. This hasn't helped.

So now I'm stumped! Any help would be greatly appreciated

Frequest DNS errors over wifi on Macs but Not PCs

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 12:30 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I have what seems to a be a pretty weird connectivity issue with Mac computers on my home wifi network. We have 5 PCs and 3 Macs on the same network. While browsing the internet all 3 Macs return err_name_not_resolved once or twice a day for a few minutes at a time. The PCs almost never show this error (maybe twice a year). The issue doesnt seem to be related to location as the two mac laptops experience it in various locations while the PCs do not. The issue comes and goes on the stationary iMac just like it does on the laptops. While the error is present, the Macs still show full wifi signal strength. Our apartment is pretty small and we're using a Asus AX5700 router, centrally located.

Has anyone experienced something similar? Any advice is greatly appreciated. We work from home so this has been hugely inconvenient for the Mac user.

    Thanks!

Best modem and router for comcast 1.2 gig speed

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 12:27 PM PDT

    Hello All.
I am sick of using Comcasts modem and router combo and want to get one of each where I own them. I use it for phone also so it needs phone capability. I also go cat 8 all around right now.
I am getting slow speed. usually topping out at 300mbps.
    Here what I was thinking
NETGEAR Nighthawk Cable Modem with Voice (CM1150)
    NETGEAR Nighthawk 12-stream ax12 wifi 6 router (RAX120) AX6000

Let me know if cat 8 isn't any good.
I am hoping to get it around or after Christmas.
Let me know if they are any good or if there are better.
I want speed. If I need to get extenders I will.
Thanks much and I appreciate the help.
