    Simple Questions - September 28, 2021

    Posted: 28 Sep 2021 05:00 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post.
Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Just got a Newegg shuffle alert and I have 105 minutes to decide whether to buy it

    Posted: 28 Sep 2021 01:16 PM PDT

The bundle in question is a $550 EVGA FTW3 3060 Ti and a $130 EVGA G1+ 650W PSU; after tax and shipping I'm looking at $700. Should I get it?

I am in the middle of a build and the only thing missing is a GPU...

EDIT: The consensus is a unanimous yes. My wallet is now ouchy after this purchase, but here comes a 3060 Ti (thank you PSU that costs twice as much as it should.)

After 10 months of waiting, I have found inner peace

    Posted: 28 Sep 2021 12:00 PM PDT

I am currently shitting myself, gpus are not a myth. The Evga queue waitlists are not an infinite void. Checked my gmail this morning to see an Evga email with the words "availability". Two minutes later I have made the order and will get my gpu in 3 days.

It's been over 10 months since I've been looking to build a pc, and ever since December 1st when I got on the queues for a 3060 ti, along with all the other 30 series. It's been quite a journey to say the least. I can finally let my beloved 550 TI rest, over 6 years of using my first pc, and it still surprisingly lives. I can now leave Windows 7, I can finally run things far better. Don't loose hope everyone......now excuse me as I go do fist pumps at the speed of light.

    Should I get a 3060 or a 3070?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2021 03:15 PM PDT

Is the 3070 really worth the extra money? I'm just going to use it for gaming and school.

High end computer not running as well as it should?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2021 04:31 PM PDT

Hi, I recently built a PC with the GPU being a 3080 FE and the CPU being a Ryzen 7 5800x. I have come to notice that in games it does not pull as many frames as it should. For example in amazon new world it will pull 60fps in towns and 120 outside at 2560x1440 max settings when others with weaker cards are pulling more. I think the problem is my CPU but am unsure on how to go about fixing it

some problems I’ve been having with my pc lately that I’d like to fix

    Posted: 28 Sep 2021 04:06 PM PDT

recently my pc has been displaying a lot of problems. it blue screens frequently, even at times when nothing is running. when I restart my pc it can get stuck in the restarting process until I manually turn it off. when it reboots it blue screens or reboots again or shows a windows error screen. when it reboots i hear a single beep. my pc never really lags but sometimes whatever I'm on just instantly and abruptly crashes or whenever I'm on chrome the tab screen "flickers" once. none of this stuff ever happened until a few days ago. if anyone might know why this is happening or thinks they can help please let me know, thanks.

Newbie trying to build a PC

    Posted: 28 Sep 2021 01:15 PM PDT

Hey everyone, it's my first-ever post on Reddit so I hope I don't make any mistake! 😊 Right now I am trying to build my first PC and (so far) I thought I did a good job. But now my system starts freezing again and again. I am not able to open the task-manager or any other program and the only solution is a restart. Most of the time I am using Geoinformation Systems like ArcGIS Pro and SAGA, but it also freezes when I am just watching YouTube or Netflix. I have checked the system temperature and it is normally between 35-60 degree Celsius. I also did a RAM-Check and it says that everything works fine. I have updated all the drivers that I was able to find and changed the bios settings back to default… It would be very kind, if anyone could help me!

    Posted: 28 Sep 2021 04:47 PM PDT

Hey! I got myself some parts to build a PC out off, but since I am pretty much a noob in this I'd like to ask for your opinion! It's mainly gonna be used for heavy 3D work/simulation, thats why theres so much RAM. I sadly can't swap to AMD since my programs work way better with Intel and Nvidia! I don't care much about WI-FI nor RGB/fanciness. Simply as much power as I can get for the buck. Case, Fans... are gonna be added later on! Thank you :D

also: I won't buy the PC parts rn, hoping for a price drop in the next year, so don't worry too much about prices!

    Should I use a M.2 as a boot drive and/or primary storage?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2021 05:22 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

It's been a long while since I've built a PC, so finding out that motherboards now have this M.2 slot, I'm curious about them.

From what I've read they have great read times and data transfer times, but I haven't really read anything if they should be used as my boot drive and/or primary storage.

Should I just stick to a SATA drive for my boot/primary storage, or is M.2 the way of the furure?

    Upgrading PC

    Posted: 28 Sep 2021 04:34 PM PDT

Hello, I'm looking to upgrade my pc as it's long overdue and I'm looking for suggestions for components as I'm not really sure at all what parts to get.

I'm looking to upgrade my motherboard, CPU, and ram as in my opinion they are all the parts that need to be upgraded.

I've been thinking about upgrading to the AMD Ryzen 5 5600X but like I said I'm not entirely sure I've done some research but still looking for help.

I included an Imgur link with a list of all my current pc parts I couldn't find the ram but it's DDR3 anyway.

The budget is around $600-$700, Thanks for any help.

First Build -Request for Feedback on Parts Selection

    Posted: 28 Sep 2021 04:11 PM PDT

Hi all! This is a build I am hoping to commence soon and I am currently looking around for any feedback or advice before ordering parts. As I'm sure many of you can empathize, I don't want the time or money put into my first build to be in vain. Any feedback on compatibility, clearances, performance bottlenecks, or places to save money would be greatly appreciated. I'll provide some brief notes on the intended use of the device and the justification behind the part selection below.

Usage: I will need the build to run Archicad and Photoshop regularly, with some gaming (nothing triple A, but some fps like Valorant, CSGO, etc) less regularly. My current laptop maxes out the memory consistently trying to run Photoshop, often freezing and crashing.

Budget: I would like to keep the build under $1000 AUD- including everything from shipping to the smaller things like cable ties and thermal paste.

GPU: Fortunately, in keeping with the above budget, I am able to receive the listed GPU for free from a friend. Therefore, this will be an unchanging part of the build.

Storage: The price difference between HDD and SSD has become very minor now, so I am absolutely willing to spend money on an SSD.

Memory: As I am baselining the performance off the system requirements for Archicad, I've chosen 16 gb. My understanding is that the difference between 3200 and 3000 is not very noticeable, and so I've chosen a 3000 model to save money.

CPU: I find it quite difficult to compare CPUs given the myriad of options. I've picked a 10th gen i5 as I believe this will be suitable for the intended use. (Thanks to those who taught me not to pick 2013 parts).

Case: I love the small form factor and the white colourway (I'm essentially matching to my mouse, a white Logitech G305). I know I could save money by switching cases, but am happy to spend a little more for this.

CPU Cooler: Chosen by a combination of price, the reputation of Noctua, and the low height to comfortably fit in the mini ITX form factor.

Motherboard: An affordable option that seems to have the right inputs for the chosen components. I wouldn't be able to tell what features of a motherboard are concerning or could lead to bottlenecking- very happy to be corrected here.

Case Fan: As the mobo only has one fan header (besides the cpu cooler header), I was recommended this set of case fans as they are able to daisy chain together off the one header. They also seem very affordable.

PSU: Have received some conflicting recommendation here. Some have said 600 W will be fine (the RX570 is recommended for 600 W) but others have said to select 650 W to be safe.

Monitor: Looking for something that doesn't have an awfully thick frame or an ancient looking stand. I think 24'' with height adjustment will be the sweet spot for me in terms of size. The price jump from a TN panel to an IPS is notable, so I haven't opted for an IPS panel.

Keyboard: a white colourway keyboard that is wireless and mechanical, also matching to the white Logitech G305.

PC becomes totally unresponsive and seemingly stops sending power to any peripherals, monitors, etc. except it is still powered on.

    Posted: 28 Sep 2021 04:02 PM PDT

    Specs:
    * CPU: Ryzen 5 3600 (not overclocked)
    * Cooler: Hyper 212 Evo
    * GPU: EVGA RTX 2060 Super
    * Boot Drive (NVME): 500GB Samsung 970 Evo
    * External Drive (SSD): 1TB Samsung 860 Evo
    * RAM: G Skill DDR4 3600 (16 GB, 8x8 dual channel)
    * MoBo: ROG Strix B550
    * PSU: Gold-rated 750W EVGA GA Supernova
    * Case: Fractal Design Meshify 2
Edit - The PC is a year and a half old.

TL;DR: I think my house caused some power glitches, thus causing my computer to become unresponsive. I am looking to verify that by process of elimination, rather than recreating it (for hopefully obvious reasons). To that end, I am asking for help for other things to troubleshoot.

    The Problem:
In the last two days, my PC has become totally unresponsive twice. There is still power going to the system, evidenced by the MoBo factory lights, fans, and the power-button light. However, there is apparently no power being sent to monitors, keyboard, mouse, or speakers. Even the case's power button would not work to turn it off, and I had to use the PSU switch. I receive no error messages on start-up, but there are some errors in the event log.

There is a critical event for the unexpected crash after restart, which corresponds to my flipping of the power switch and turning of the computer back on (Event ID 41). Just prior to that event, there is an error event that says "The previous system shutdown at "x" time on "y" date was unexpected." (Event ID 6008). During the 2nd failure, I had actually been using my computer between the times mentioned in EID6008 and the time of the hard power reset; I was taking an exam. I was not using my computer at the time of the first failure, but it was idle. I had assumed a power issue at the house level after the first failure; our house has some.. questionable power issues from time to time. More details at bottom.

    What I have done:
    - reviewed event logs, mentioned above.
    - Memtest86 - full pass, 0 errors.
    - Reseat RAM - no errors so far, but it was after the 2nd failure.
    - Stress tests on GPU/CPU - thermals look okay; CPU stays between 50C and 75C, GPU maxing at 80C briefly, but mostly around 70C. The 2nd failure was during an online exam, and the first failure was idle, so I'm not thinking this was it.
    - Monitored HWinfo and Ryzen master a bunch - I find it a little odd my memory is clocking at 1796.7 MHz and that my memory system reference clock is at 99.8 MHz. I have not overclocked anything; all I've done with memory was the initial XMP adjustments to get to 1800 MHz, and haven't touched it sense.
    - Will maybe do - move my PC to my girlfriend's apartment, see if it ever happens again?

    Additional Details:
As I mentioned above, the house has some power issues, and it was my initial guess when my computer did the first time - I wasn't home, so I don't know exactly what the situation was at the time of the failure.
The 2nd failure, I was using my computer for a test, which #feelsbadman. The timing of error event ID 6008 mentioned above lines up to about the time my roommate turned on the washing machine, and may have lined up to the timing of the microwave being turned on. These are on different breakers, but the house lights periodically dim, indicating brief voltage drops. One of the kitchen breakers rarely stays on. I did not notice this happen at the time of the 2nd failure, but to summarize, the 2nd failure was at a time when the house was drawing a lot of power. The house is a little older, so my first thought is some old wiring.

    RAM - non-recommended slots

    Posted: 28 Sep 2021 11:08 AM PDT

    Hello all,

I've had computer issues recently after moving (no signal to monitor and no power to mouse or keyboard as well as MOBO DRAM-LED) lit red.

I was able to get the PC to boot using only one stick of RAM in a different slot and I believe the slot, not the other RAM chip is damaged. If this is the case, would I still see better performance with 16 GB of RAM over 8 if it isn't in the manufacture recommended slots?

I know this might seem silly but I read doing so loses dual channel or something capability and wondered if it was best to just use 8 GB moving forward until I can get a new Mobo.

Upgrading is what I want to do.

    Posted: 28 Sep 2021 04:47 PM PDT

I am wanting to upgrade in the near future. I have linked my current build and also what I want to upgrade to. Just wanting to see if there is a different way I could go about this or a different part I could get to save money and get better performance. I would like to stay with an orange and purple color scheme that is why I would like to stay with an Aorus bored. I also want to upgrade to the 3000 series. I plan on painting the shroud ( I believe that is the name of it) of the GPU. I am open to any suggestions. Right now I really have no price limit but I would like to keep it reasonable (even though that is hard to do nowadays) so I would like to stay under $4000. But if it goes higher than that I don't really care.

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

This card came from an Aorus eGPU 2070. I'm pretty sure that it's just a Gigabyte 2070 MINI ITX with a custom 130mm fan.

Under full load, or a demanding game, the 2070 MINI ITX will thermally throttle, as it reaches the temp limit (81C by default). Details below, but I replaced the existing 130mm custom fan with a 120mm Noctua NF-A12x15, as the original fan would not fit when the card was put into the PCIe slot. The card cools off quickly when not under load, and idles around 40C. System temperatures are all pretty good, and according to a thermometer placed right below the GPU fan intake, air temp in the case is pretty good (32C under full load with full fans, 29C at idle with fans slow). The card has no shroud, and also no metal backplate, and I have not been able to find an aftermarket cooler I would be confident could attach to the card due to its MINI ITX configuration. I assume with the small card layout, temperatures are always going to be a bit of a problem.

    My native resolution is 1440p.

Would a fan with higher static pressure than the NF-A12x15 be a smart move? For example, the NF-F12 has almost 75% higher static pressure, according to Noctua. Or is just moving the most air volume most important?

I'm glad to replace fans, or am open to other ideas on improved cooling.

I am a little gun shy on removing the existing heat sink to redo thermal paste or any pads, as I can't find good documentation for this card on doing it, and I don't want to kill this card. But if strongly recommended, I'll give it a shot.

Should I move the card to the 2nd PCIe slot? The card is PCIe x16 3.0, and the 2nd slot on the motherboard supports that, so I shouldn't lose too much performance, and it would get the card away from the CPU heat sink, but I'm not convinced that would make much difference?

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

I've changed the fan curve to go to 100% as soon as the temp exceeds 45C. The 100% fan noise doesn't bother me with this fan, and being inside the case. I can barely hear it go to 100% if I have the other fans super low.

I've tried underclocking the card, memory underclock doesn't impact the temperature much, and underclocking the core clock again just delays how long until it hits thermal limits. I've tested with underclocking the core clock up to 200Mhz, and the performance impact is pretty painful especially since it hits thermal limit anyways. Keeping clocks at stock vs a moderate OC just delays hitting the thermal limit by a minute or so. In older games, like CSGO, I will cap frame rates, and am using pretty low graphics settings, which will keep the temperature around 70C, but in Horizon Zero Dawn, it's going to hit the thermal throttle unless I cap way under 60fps, and already need to use upscaling to 1440p to hit 60fps consistently.

I've reduced the card power limit, which reduces the temperature limit, but that just accelerates when the thermal throttling will happen. I currently keep it at 98% power limit just to avoid running the card as hot as it allows.

I've tried the GPU fan in both push and pull configurations, and push gives me better temperatures with the NF-A12x15 fan, at least.

I haven't tried adding more case fans since the case air seems to be at a reasonable temperature. There are 2 140mm intakes in the front, and 1 140mm exhaust on the back immediately behind the CPU cooler. They are the fans that came with the bequiet 500DX case, their Pure Wings 2, but with 1 relocated as intake to try to make positive pressure.

Post relevant photos of build/parts here.

Picture of current case layout, please excuse the toys my kids gave me.

Graphics card as originally in the eGPU enclosure with the custom 130mm fan, decent view of heat sink

Provide any additional details you wish below.

If I should just let the card ride at max temp, I'll do that, but with the GPU shortage I'm a little worried about killing the card.

    Thanks for any help.

Which trio would be good for a mid range build?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2021 12:59 PM PDT

Well hi, I am thinking to build a pc but I can't decide the cpu, gpu and the motherboard. Amd or Intel?

I will be mostly programming but I want to be able to game as well. I am not obsessed with the fps over 60 would do.

I thought I5-11400f, gtx 1660s and B46M-plus wifi would be good. What are your thoughts about this?

Adding more RAM - do latency speeds need to match?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2021 04:38 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I'm likely going to upgrade the RAM in my PC from 16GB to 32GB; while I know the simplest way would be to by a 32GB kit, it'd be far cheaper for me to purchase another 16GB kit and slot it in. (current set up is the standard 2x8GB, would be purchasing another 2x8GB as opposed to a 2x16GB)

The RAM in my current set up is rated at 3200mhz; and I'm looking at matching the same brand and speed; only problem is, I'm having trouble nailing down the exact same latency speeds.

My current RAM, according to the sellers website, has a latency speed of 16-20-20-38, but it's out of stock near me. I've found what appears to be the same RAM at another place, but listed latency speeds are 16-18-18-36, so not exactly matching.

Would I be screwed if I were to purchase the RAM with a different latency speed, and install it alongside the original kit?

    Cheers for the responses :)

    Best Laptop for $1000

    Posted: 28 Sep 2021 04:37 PM PDT

I'm looking for the best laptop for gaming for right around $1000. Newegg searches only go so far, and they don't seem to have every option available.

With laptop gpu tgp varying so much it seems pretty difficult to find the best bang for my buck.

    Thanks!
