Need help with a birthday present

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 09:18 PM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

USD$1200 price flexible. I live in the US, but it's for someone in the UK

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Yeah

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Truthfully, I'm not 100% sure what this all means, but the battery life doesn't have to be phenomenal

How important is weight and thinness to you?

I'd say like max 5 lbs

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    14 or more inches

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Gaming, Sims 4, Civ VI. He's going to be watching lots of youtube and streamers on it as well

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Ideally max, but that's not super necessary

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    Nah

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'm purchasing it for my long-term boyfriend as a birthday gift. He's currently in England so I would need to be able to get him some kind of adapter for the power cable so it fits his outlets, any direction with that would be nice too.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Around SGD2000 or more. It depends, really.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      No

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I currently have a Lenovo Flex 5, 14", so far it's serving me well but I'd like to look for something which fits my course requirements (read near the end of the post), and has a very good battery life. So battery life is a first, then followed by build quality and performance with equal priority.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Weight is very important to me, as well as portability because my current Lenovo Flex 5 feels like some brick when I carry it around with me, I wish it was as light as my Macbook Air 2013. Thinness is not a big issue, though.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Preferably 13"-15", but if it's bigger I'll just make do with it.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Some softwares that will be ran include: Office 2019, Adobe CC, Visio 2016, VS Community 2019 (with SQL Server Express 2016 LocalDB add-in), SAP Client v7.5

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I don't game, just play Sudoku occasionally, so N/A.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Perhaps finger-print reader & face recognition? Reliable build quality would be GREAT.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Looking for new powerful laptop for Computer Animation and gaming. Budget $2000

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 01:33 PM PDT

I don't know much about laptops so if this doesn't sound right please let me know. It's going to be used in college and gaming.

Budget: $2k. I can go a little higher but don't want to go crazy

Looking for min 16GB. 32GB would be nice

I need an excellent graphics card. I am not sure what is out there or how to compare them

Internal storage, not sure what I'll need for the animation software. I will buy an external for more storage if needed

    Decent battery life

    Large screen

Gaming: nothing too crazy. Path of Exile. If the laptop is powerful enough I might try other games that require lots of power

    Thanks!

US- Looking to buy a new laptop for around $800- $1200

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 06:43 PM PDT

I'm looking to buy a new laptop for work (nothing crazy here mostly docs and excel) and for everyday use. I consume a lot of media so something with a nice screen and decent sound would be preferable (of course a long-lasting battery would be great). I'd like to do some light gaming (games like minecraft), but I have a next gen console so something that does heavy gaming probably isn't a necessity.

I've tried finding a few options and these were the options that I thought would fit well:

    M1 MacBook Air

    HP Spectre x360

HP Envy x360 (with the specs I was planning to get it was close to other two in price)

I've probably been giving the M1 the most consideration at the moment, but the biggest hurdle for me would be changing to a new OS that I'm not used to. Also, there's probably other laptops I missed, so please feel free to recommend anything you guys think is worth looking into. Thank you!

Need help picking new gaming laptop (~€1.500, Austria). I looked at small local sellers but can't tell if their assortment (at the bottom of the post) fits my needs

    Posted: 19 Sep 2021 01:41 AM PDT

(Got some laptops from small sellers in my area at the bottom, but can't tell if they fit my needs performance wise/if the different versions of the same product are worth investing more)

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase:
      around €1500, Austria

      Performance, build quality, battery life
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      somewhat, preferrably around 2kg
    • Do you have a preferred screen size?
      between 15" and 17"

Cities Skylines, Planet Zoo, Sims 4 must run smoothly
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

My old laptop was an ASUS N550J from 2014 with a CORE i7 (4 cores according to google) and 8GB RAM, so it must at least surpass the abilities of that one. Since so much time has passed, it must be possible at a price that doesn't go too much over budget, no?

Looking at small sellers in my area, they offer the laptops below. Are any of those suitable?

    • MEDION ERAZER Deputy P25
    • ACER Nitro 5 AN517-52-71C7 - RTX3060
    • ACER Nitro 5 AN517-52-555T - RTX 3060
    • ACER Nitro 5 AN517-54-705L - RTX 3070

I heard ACER Nitro 5 is reliable but I can't tell if the difference in performance of the models offered is worth investing the +/-€200, depending on the model, for my needs. Any other brands or models that would be suitable?

Thank you in andvance for the advice!

Is a 60% sRGB display really that bad if you are not doing any creative work?

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 05:55 AM PDT

I would use the laptop for programming, browsing web, watching netflix, no photoshop or video editing.

Would I really suffer from the 60% srgb display in your opinion?

The laptop I'm thinking about is this Lenovo ideapad 5 (I can get it for €770). It looks really good to me, the only problem with it is that 60% srgb display.

Looking for advice on buying a new laptop from any big brand

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 10:55 PM PDT

Hi guys, I'm currently looking for a new laptop, I owned an Asus rig strix but I had a very bad experience with it so no Asus for me anymore.

I've been looking at other brands, especially MSI, Lenovo and Acer.

MSI is a bit more expensive that the other 2 brands here in my country, but some people have told me not to buy a laptop for gaming from any other brand of laptops that didn't start for gaming, their reasons is because they say these laptops are made to be disposable, unfixable and simply, not made in a good way. One or two of the people I asked also told me not to buy one with Ryzen but they didn't give me any reasons.

So I'd like to know what you guys think about these brands (not any in concrete) or the gaming branch of these big companies that didn't start as a gaming brand

Looking for Laptop for Gaming and Web browsing/YouTube

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 08:14 PM PDT

    Budget: $1000-$1500

Specs I'm looking for: - rtx 3060 (I'm not familiar with graphics cards but I've been told I should look for this GPU or around this powerful of one) - 16gb ram or more - 256gb ssd or more - 15.6inch or bigger screen (prefer bigger) - 144hz screen or better

So far I've found a few with the specs I want and for a decent price, but I don't know what laptop is better. I want something that doesn't get hot and I wouldn't need a cooling pad for like my previous one. Also something that is less minimal and shows it's a gaming laptop would be nice to have.

Some of them that seem interesting are: - HP Omen - Asus Tuf / Tuf dash - Acer predator Helios 300 - Lenovo Legion - Dell G series

Upgrading from a Dell 3579 - looking for a gaming laptop that also has good battery for mundane tasks

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 11:26 AM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
Between $800-$1000 USD, but will go slightly higher if it means finding what I'm looking for. Will not look at anything nearing 2k - it's not worth the price tag for me.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No, must be new.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Battery life and performance (battery life for mundane laptop usage; performance for gaming, even if it means keeping laptop plugged in)

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Don't want anything bulky, but I'm not picky

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      15.6, nothing bigger or smaller

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      Mainstream/AAA gaming

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Games like No Man's Sky, Biomutant, A Plague Tale: Innocence - 60FPS or higher, with little to no lag, and high quality

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I would like a backlit keyboard (preferably customizable), but this is low on requirements. Keyboard and touchpad must be durable for gaming.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I currently own a Dell 3579 laptop. I believe I've had it for about two years. Between the battery going bad and a touchpad that seems to have a bug with registering clicks, I'd rather save longterm for a new (better) laptop than constantly pay for a new touchpad.
I'm the type of person to get a laptop and use it as is. Thus, nothing that would require "thermal pasting" or anything that is taking the computer apart on a regular basis. I don't have a need for expanding storage/RAM.

Also, on a minor note - I would like the laptop to be eligible for Windows 11, as it wouldn't make sense for me to get a laptop that I can't upgrade.

15" simple Laptop for my mother. United States. Budget $600. Needs Windows 10 and an hdmi port. Just browsing and streaming.

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 04:24 PM PDT

Staples tried to upsell my mother a $1200 "gaming" laptop and told her she needed it lol. I told her to return it. I said she could get one to fit her needs for half as much. She just wants a basic windows 10 machine that will connect with her printer (needs windows 10) and can stream media over hdmi to her TV (don't need a gaming laptop for that lol)

Maybe an Asus or Acer? Something quality but affordable. I'll be looking around while this post is up. Thanks in advance if you have any suggestions.

    $550

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Laptop should last for 3 years. Battery run time can be low because I always keep the charger plugged in.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    None

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I want to watch movies on netflix or hulu, browse reddit, use google drive(docs) online. I am not going to use it for gaming, just for browsing.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

None, not going to be playing games on it.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    Needs USB ports.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

The laptop should last for 2-3 years. Security is top priority as I am going to use this for work. I don't want refurbished because of this reason(they may not support latest os). I am going to use it as secondary work laptop. Which requires just light browsing like filling some forms on a website. I will only use the laptop when I get an alert. So, pretty much the laptop will be used rarely. Browsing should not be slow.

Looking for a laptop for digital art, $500 or less, preferably.

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 06:33 PM PDT

Old laptop just took a dump so I'm in the process of finding a new one. Not a computer person so I'm not really sure where to begin. The most heavy duty work I do is just digital art, sometimes play with flash animation. Nothing professional. Appreciate the help!

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Buying in US, up to $500.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Sure.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I can be clumsy so the sturdier the better, whatever good performance I can get for the budget, mostly stay connected so battery life doesn't really matter much.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not important.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

14 inches, maybe. I'll likely have it hooked up to a larger monitor most of the time.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I do some photo editing, mostly drawing, sometimes animation. I like to use Krita, Photoshop, and Flash, would like to use Blender. No games, but I might like to play one or two like Moss or No Man's Sky.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Whatever works. I dont know if I'll ever be playing any games anyway, I might never get around to it.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I don't often use a touchpad since I keep a drawing tablet plugged in and using a touchpad too long hurts my hand. I use a wacom intuos pen and touch tablet. I like to listen to music so good speakers would be nice but I have a good pair of headphones to make up for it too.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    3D modeling/Rendering/Unreal Engine Laptop, under £1100

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 02:24 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

£1,100 - purchasing in the UK. I just moved here from the US.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    no

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I would prioritize performance, this computer needs to be able to handle very taxing 3D software such as Maya, UE4, Zbrush etc. and high graphics games.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

not very. I don't want it to be gigantic, at least so I can carry it in a backpack if necessary, but I'm down to trade off for performance.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    15" or larger

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Unreal Engine, Maya, Substance (designer and painter) Zbrush, Premiere pro, and more. + lots of gaming

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I play a lot of DOTA, but I know any computer with the specs to run my software can run all new games

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Performance is 90% of what I care about. I'm alright hooking it up to external keyboard and mouse. As long as the case isnt too fragile, and the screen is nice.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I've been looking at the Acer Nitro, Lenovo Legion, Predator Helios. But not sure what to get yet. Thank you in advance for the advice!

If you have a suggestion please let me know!

Good laptop for media consumption (YouTube, HD movies)?

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 01:59 PM PDT

I am looking for a laptop that is good for media consumption, meaning it primarily needs to have a good screen and good speakers. I currently use a Chromebook for this purpose which has served me well, except that it is getting slow, especially when I have a lot of browser tabs open.

    Requirements:

    • $1,500 or less preferably (I'm in the USA)
    • 15"+ display (not picky about resolution so long as it looks good)
    • Good speakers
    • 8+ GB of ram
    • No soft-touch "rubberized" surface finishes, just bare metal or plastic (durable and easy to clean)
    • Minimal fan noise (silent at idle)

    Don't care about:

    • Wouldn't use a touchscreen
    • Weight, portability, and battery life are not super important

i like thin, small laptops that i can carry easily

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

no video editing, I'd like it to be able to handle video games but I only play one on computer

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

minecraft, i don't really mind the settings, FPS maybe like 60??

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

i like all of those features, but i don't mind a laptop with only one of those. none of those are like a requirement for me, more like a bonus

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

N/A, i think it's covered!! and thank you so much for helping me i really appreciate this!!!

Best equivalent to a 14-inch Macbook Air?

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 05:23 PM PDT

Reposting because last one got no replies (let me know if I'm doing something wrong)

I've been here before, looking for a business grade laptop. I got great answers here as well as in my teacher groups, and was ultimately between a Lenovo Thinkpad 14" E14 Gen 2 laptop and a 13.3" Macbook Air. I went to a brick-and-mortar store to try the Macbook and the 13.3" is sooo small. I learned that they are releasing a 14" laptop this fall and was thinking I might wait to try that, but alas I realized they are releasing a 14" Macbook *Pro* not Air and really that's way more computer than I need, I can't justify that cost. A 14" Macbook Air is rumored but not until 2022, so here I am again.

My hang up for the Lenovo I mentioned is that the screen and keyboard reviews are not great. It's also very dark and I really hate the color red :P

I also went to Best Buy today and the guy there suggested a Microsoft Surface 4, a Dell Inspiron 7000, or a HP Spectre.

TL;DR What's the best PC equivalent for a nonexistent 14-inch Macbook Air?

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      - I would like to stay under $800 but let me hear what you got
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      -Yes, I would prefer it
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
-I can't think of a time when I would ever use a tablet form. I just want a regular laptop that is sturdy (I have dropped mine at least twice...) Battery life not too important, it will usually be used at home. Performance- I want something that works well, works smoothly, and is long-lasting.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      -Not much
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      -14-15.5"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
-No, I would like it to be good with managing lots of photos though.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      -none
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
-Good, bright screen. Nice keyboard. I love my old mechanical keyboard I use right now with my laptop (since its many of its keys are broken) so something with really great-feeling keys would be great.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
-I have an iPhone and heard great things about how a Macbook and an iPhone work so smoothly together- photos, even text messaging you can do seamlessly through the laptop. Would it be worth getting a 13" 2020 Macbook Air with the M1 chip and then sell it if I decide I eventually want the 14" way later? That seems silly now that I'm saying it, ha.

Help. I've been stuck in laptop analysis paralysis for way too long now. Save meee

LF: Laptop for gaming, 17" screen, RTX 3070/3080 GPU, max budget of 2.800 CAD (2.200 USD)

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 01:12 PM PDT

Pretty much everything important is in the title. I could accept a 16" screen size too. I don't care about battery life, fan noise or RGB. Having a USB 3 type C port is always a plus. I saw that some models don't come with one. So there it is, I'm open to your suggestions.

    An all-rounder.

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 04:09 PM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
    • 1000-1300 USD willing to add a bit more if the device is that good.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
    • No.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
    • An Ultrabook or a 2 in 1 doesn't matter as long as the device fits within the requirements below.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
    • weight is very important because I'll be walking with it A LOT. so I don't want anything super heavy.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
    • nothing smaller than a 13 in, and it could be big as long as the device overall is light.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
    • photo editing, programming, light video editing (could get heavier in the future), trying to learn blender, maybe some light gaming (mostly indies).

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
    • nothing major.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
    • a color accurate screen, a 3:2 or 16:10 aspect ratio (optional but preferred), an i7 11th gen or a Ryzen 7 5th gen, a good keyboard for programming, stylish (optional but preferred), at least 16 GB ram, at least 512 SSD storage, charges via USB-C not by a headphone-jack looking port.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
    • when at home I'm gonna plug it into a monitor to use it and charge it, so charging via USB C is a must. a bright screen is a plus, if it looks and feels premium that is a plus. having a small chin or a huge screen-to-body ratio like more than 88% is a huge plus. I know that these are a lot of conditions for the budget but I can cut some corners so don't hesitate to send your suggestion. Thank you.
