    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

      $800-$1500 USD

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    yes, both

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

performance > battery life > build quality > form factor (battery life and build quality are more or less tied)

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

i only really wanna be able to carry it around in a backpack without hating my life, otherwise not much

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      preferably 15" or bigger

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

definitely gaming (mostly destiny 2 and FFXIV), some CAD and 3D modeling stuff i assume too, starting an engineering major next semester so not sure which programs specifically yet

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

as mentioned before destiny 2 and ffxiv, i really only care about having around a 60-100 fps rate and high resolutions, don't need anything insane

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

good build quality would be nice since i'm kinda clumsy lol, as well as a good keyboard (preferably with a number pad but definitely not a must), don't care about touch screen at all

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

i also might be looking to twitch stream if i can get something that'll handle it but i'll probably just do a 2 pc setup with whatever laptop i get running the game and my current pc running the stream

(On a acer aspire 5, 8GB ram) would it be worth the considerable price difference currently to buy the Ryzen 4700U over the i5 1135G7? How different are they?

    $500-800 Laptop - USA

    Posted: 02 Sep 2021 06:41 PM PDT

    Hey guys!

I'm currently typing this on a laptop where only half the keys are working - with a new one not working everyday =( Thus, I decided that it is time to replace my computer. I'm a noob when it comes to computers, so any help would be super appreciated!

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
$ 500 - 800 USD → I would be willing to go up in budget (maybe up to $ 1000) if it is really worth it

Also, I'll be purchasing the laptop in the US.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No thank you
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance > Build quality > Battery life (least 9 hours with lower brightness) > Form factor
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
I'd be okay with anything that is less than 5 lbs, but lighter would be awesome
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      Bigger than 12 inches
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Nope - besides the occasional emulator, I haven't gotten into PC gaming.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      Nope
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I would like a keyboard that isn't too loud and a good input device (a nice touchpad with a soft-to-click button for right/left click)
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I'd be cool with an older laptop model and replacing the hard drive with an SSD myself as long as it doesn't require more tools than a screwdriver and a piece of metal to ground myself. Bluetooth is a must as I always have my headphones in to watch stuff. Also, I mostly use my laptop to watch anime and other shows, so I'd appreciate a nice display (doesn't have to be amazing) and decent sound quality.

Best Laptops below $1000 in August 2021

    Posted: 03 Sep 2021 03:20 AM PDT

The best laptops under $1,000 will provide you with exceptional performance, long battery life, and versatility while remaining within your budget. What exactly does this imply? You don't have to spend a huge amount to have an excellent laptop.

Some features you'll be willing to give up depending on who you are and what you need, while others you won't. For example, if you only require a laptop for casual web browsing and productivity software, a lower-end CPU should suffice. If you're frequently on the road and use your laptop outside, though, you may not be able to overlook a bright display or a laptop with long battery life.

Looking for a lightweight Video Editing / Writing / slightly gaming Laptop

    Posted: 03 Sep 2021 02:26 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

      1.000 Euro in Germany

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      Yes

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I want a slim and light Laptop with good build quality. Battery an Performance are important but I can live with sth. that I plug in during longer work sessions

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

      pretty important

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I want to get into video editing a lot, thats one of the main reasons for the laptop

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I want to game but nothing competitive. Indie games, mainly walking simulators. It's not super important, I don't game that often and it's really secondary

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

A good keyboard for writing and I want to plug it into my monitor and use the laptop and the monitor as two seperate screens. I also want to use it to plug it into my TV via HDMI for movies

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I have been thinking about it and I tend to go with the Macbook Air M1 BUT maybe there is a good alternative for my use. I have an iPad Pro and iPhone, so I am kinda in the ecosystem, but I have been using Windows all my life and have been happy with it. But the m1 seems great aside from gaming...is it worth the switch? Should I wait for the coming Macbook Air? Is there a good Windows Alternative?

helppp :( digital artist, researcher, PhD student, casual gamer - under $1800

    Posted: 02 Sep 2021 07:47 PM PDT

help pls :( too many optionssssss

I have been an exclusive macbook pro user. I currently have a 2013 macbook pro. I love it but I want to be able to play Age of empires :( and do 3D art like on blender. I love how clean and minimal the macbook hardware is as well the iOS systems runs well with my iphone and ipad pro (which I use for art). I can run windows by splitting the harddrive on the macbook and that is one option but I want someone more versed in this field to help me pick please <3

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    under $1800 USD

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    noooo

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I highly value a seamless/clean/minimal hardware design and an uncluttered OS. I run many programs at once so I need a machine that can compliment my anxious overactive brain. I'm not so worried about battery life as long as there is at least 10 hours.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

I'm a fan of macbook pros because of the clean thin ergonomic design - I care about the visual aspect and less about the weight.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Indifferent but around 13 inches is perfect!

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I want to learn blender! I use procreate on my ipad but want to learn animation. I also have a VR headset where I do VR art that I want to export into Maya to do 3d renders. I am also learning to code and will need to run regressions etc for research.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I love Sims and Age of empires and just some simple steam games that are windows only. Which would need a windows OS standalone or on a macbook split drive.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I do not need touch screen. I love soft keys. Anything that has the feel of a macbook is my vibe.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    please. help. aaaaaaaaaaaaa

I'm honestly overwhelmed. I know that the windows world offers much more than apple but I do not know where to start. I do not want to hate my new laptop.

Laptop with good compromise between battery life and GPU

    Posted: 02 Sep 2021 11:15 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

I'm looking for a reasonably powerful laptop for programming, graphics (particularly Blender), and some amount of gaming, that also has at least decent battery life.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      Up to 1700 USD
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Yes
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I care about battery life about as much as performance and am looking for a good compromise. I bought a System76 Gazelle (with a DGPU) and returned it because I was only getting about 2.5 hours max battery life even with battery life tweaks and the DGPU turned off.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Not particularly important
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      14", I can live with 15.6"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
The main thing I care about is Blender
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I'm not a super-serious gamer, but I would like to be able to play some AAA games on a laptop. Doom 2016 is probably the most graphically-intensive game I'm playing right now.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I'd like a keyboard with a multicolored backlight if possible. Not super important, I just think they look cool.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I plan to run Linux exclusively on the laptop, and ideally would buy from a company that doesn't make you pay for Windows. I already have 32 GB RAM sticks and a M.2 ssd, so ideally I'd be able to buy a laptop without those installed at all.

300-400 budget, mostly looking for browsing and a lil’ gaming if possible.

    Posted: 02 Sep 2021 10:52 PM PDT

Hi! My laptop just completely broke (the screen broke) and I'm looking for another one. Please help!

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    300-400 USD

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      Totally! I don't mind.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I would prioritize performance, honestly. I don't really care about battery life since I leave my laptop on my desk. I don't really want a 2-in-1, either.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

It's not important to me, I don't mind.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    Around 15 inches.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I like to do some gaming, not very demanding games though, just games like Minecraft and Valorant.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Again, not very demanding games, atleast 30-40 fps if possible? I would like a decent gpu, if that's in my budget.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I would really really prefer if it had atleast 1tb of storage and 8gb ram or more, that's about it.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

That's about it! Thanks in advance.

13" laptop for use on airplanes | USA | $1000 USD

    Posted: 02 Sep 2021 06:02 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
$1000 USD with some wiggle room
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Yes to refurbs
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
      From highest to lowest priority:
    1. 13" 1920x1080 (both are a must)
    2. As powerful as possible while staying below 75W power draw to avoid tripping airplane seat outlet breakers. Will settle for being able to charge it from a power bank if need be, but would prefer the unlimited power an outlet provides.
    3. Long battery life. Again, will settle for being able to extend battery life by charging from a power bank.
    4. Small, light, portable. This is primarily a travel laptop.
    5. Build quality.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Fairly important
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      13"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      Some gaming, nothing cutting edge.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Civilization 6 is a must. Would like to be able to play games like Fallout 4 and Outer Worlds at least at 30 fps. Not looking to play the latest and greatest like Red Dead Redemption 2. Not super picky about graphics, I'm happy to drop them down to medium or low to ensure a steady frame rate. I guess I have no idea if any of this is reasonable for a laptop of my size and power draw requirements, so don't rule out anything that meets those requirements just because it can't play Skyrim on Ultra at 60fps haha.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      • 13" 1920x1080 screen is a must.
      • A touchpad that supports gestures (2 finger scroll, 2 finger click for right-click, 3 finger swipe for back/forward in browser, etc) is strongly preferred. Not a fan of dedicated left/right mouse buttons.
      • A USB Type C port that can be used to charge the laptop (for use with low wattage chargers and power banks) is preferred.
      • 1TB drive is preferred. I know this is going to limit my options, so it's not a requirement. Will settle for 512GB if need be.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Essentially, I'm looking for a 13" 1920x1080 screen laptop that won't trip an airplane seat outlet's 75W circuit breaker. I am open to using a power bank to extend the battery life instead, but would prefer that as a Plan B. Want to be able to play games on long flights without worrying about battery life. Also, I've heard good things about Intel Xe graphics, but I don't know how that affects price or power draw, so it's not a requirement.

$800 Max budget for College student from the Philippines

    Posted: 02 Sep 2021 09:05 PM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US

    • 40,000 Php or 800 USD, Philippines

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    • No, but would still like to hear your opinions if there are good laptops from years ago

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    • I really don't know what these are. I don't like the cheap bendy plastic feel. I'd like a laptop with good battery too.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    • Not that important since I never brought my laptop anywhere, but I prefer thinner ones, and for weight, it can be whatever.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    • Bigger screens since I watch a lot of movies

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    • No Cad, only light to moderate video editing but not that extensive. For photo, I do simple digital artworks if that helps
    • Not really a gamer but would like to play LoL sometimes, but if the price range can't, it's okay, gaming is not a priority.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    • LoL and I only know that from before, I used to play at 50fps but it's better if higher, but if my price range can't, it's okay, gaming is not a priority.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    • Business student, Finance and Management Accounting so I compute a lot.
    • Digital Artist but I only make simple ones that doesn't require too much processing
    • I watch a lot of movies so bigger screens would be good

    Budget ~$700 USA

    Posted: 02 Sep 2021 09:03 PM PDT

I want a laptop that can handle playing Skyrim with decent graphics. That's it. I'm a simple gal and it's my favorite game. I don't need anything SUPER fancy. I just plan on using my laptop for school, and Skyrim. Maybe some sims too.

Please suggest something as simple as that if possible! Thank you!

Looking for a 12hrs+ daily usage laptop that can handle multi-tasking with good battery backup (50k inr)

    Posted: 02 Sep 2021 09:01 PM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

My budget would be upto 50k rupees and country is India

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Nope

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Good Battery life is a must. Multi-tasking in another priority.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not that important.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Average screen size. Though more than 15 inch would be preferable.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

After Effects, Visual Studio Code/Android Studio/IDEs and Photoshop. Not into gaming. You can consider me as a casual gamer. Though gaming isn't a priority.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    NA.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    Nothing that much.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

With multi-tasking I meant heavy web browsing with multiple tabs open along with different application running simultaneously like Photoshop, Visual Studio, Video player etc. Also, heating should be very low. Also, I will use the laptop daily for 12hrs+ and battery life should be very good. Min. 8gb RAM. In terms of storage, I'm ok with HDD too but it should be at least 1tb+.
