    Manjaro XFCE: bash -> xfce4-terminal -> xterm-256color -> X Window System -> CPU ?????

    Posted: 02 Sep 2021 11:21 AM PDT

    Hi,

I am new to linux and trying to learn about how the default terminal emulator on Manjaro XFCE works. Could someone please read over what I wrote and correct me if/where I am wrong?

The deafult terminal emulator on Manjaro XFCE is called xfce4-terminal and by default uses bash as the shell. Since the environment variable TERM in my home folder is set to xterm-256color, and also from what I read on the xterm Wikipedia page about xterm being the standard terminal emulator for the X Window System, I think this means that the xfce-terminal builds on the terminal emulator xterm, which xterm-256color is a protocol/variant of? From my understanding this means that xterm agains build upon the X Window System.

So when I write a command in bash it basically goes: bash -> xfce4-terminal -> xterm-256color -> X Window System -> CPU/some other program I am unaware of

If I got it completely wrong, I would appreciate it a lot if someone explained why and where I can read to learn more.

protip: make a habit of keeping README files in most of your folders.

    Posted: 02 Sep 2021 04:47 AM PDT

I've found keeping a plaintext README file in damn near every folder to come in quite handy. in it i jot down syntax for certain commands i'm likely to run in a folder, notes reminding me if certain things are hiding in a weird nested folder, etc. i think i picked up the idea from a nextcloud plugin that displayed any README file in a folder at the top as a note.

nothing groundbreaking but as a compulsive note-taker it fit in my workflow easy and helped me so passing along!

    Pipewire Audio Cackling

    Posted: 02 Sep 2021 10:15 AM PDT

If I'm listening to a song on Brave (Browser) and playing Phasmophobia (Game), then I start to hear audio cackling. If I'm listening to only a song on Brave, then the audio is perfect.

To switch to Pipewire I ran these exact commands,

    pacman -S pipewire pipewire-pulse gst-plugin-pipewire

    systemctl --user enable pipewire.service pipewire-pulse.service

For me the Pipewire.conf file is in

    /usr/share/pipewire/pipewire.conf

    Unless that's where it normally is. Anyway I changed these values in the conf file, I don't have the original values;

    default.clock.quantum = 256

    default.clock.min-quantum = 256 default.clock.max-quantum = 768

    BTW I use Arch.

I sometimes see command preceded by the pound symbol, does it mean the same thing as sudo? Sorry for the simple question, this is really difficult to google because of the special character.

Enabling Permissions Inheritance from Folder to Subfolder

    Posted: 02 Sep 2021 01:35 PM PDT

    Hello,

Forgive this humble Windows guy looking to learn more about Linux as he has transitioned to full-time Linux at home. I need an ELI5 of how the setfacl command works under POP!_OS/Ubuntu (I'm on 21.04). I'm having a lot of trouble with the man pages and other researched forum posts and I just don't find them clear or straightforward to follow for some reason. I'm clearing misunderstanding something. The problem I am having is this:

    • I am using a media server which is having trouble scanning a subfolder and adding new files to it.
    • The parent folder has the proper group permissions to it, and the previously-existing subfolders inherited the correct permissions.
    • Since then, any new folder or file I add to the parent folder is missing that groupname. I want any new child folder to automatically inherit the permissions/groups of the parent folder.

In Windows this is as simple as going into the security settings and enabling inheritance (if it isn't already enabled in the first place).

I've tried various permutations of the below command, changing options, etc

    setfacl -R -m g:groupname:rx "Parent Folder"

To me that looks like I'm telling the setfacl command to recursively modify the parent folder permissions for "groupname" to read and execute files, and recursively add that to all child folders. From the documentation I've read, it looks right to me. Groupname can already do that for in-line folders with it, and on the parent.

It doesn't give me an error so much as just show me the syntax for the command. Perhaps I'm misunderstanding how syntax works on Ubuntu's CLI, or there's something I'm missing, or maybe setfacl isn't the right command for what I'm trying to accomplish, but to me it *looks* like that should be working, and it's clearly now. Where may I be going wrong?

Thank you for your time here.

    Manjaro Drive Permissions and Security

    Posted: 02 Sep 2021 11:11 AM PDT

I am configuring a Manjaro install dual booted with Windows 10.

After Linux install on SSD and mounting the HDD partition for storage, I could not create new folders in the HDD, so I changed the permissions with chmod and ownership with chown. Not entirely sure which one fixed my problem. There was some kind of delay after chmod.

I am now the owner of the mounted HDD directory and root is set as group. This is a business computer (not critical for operation) so security is important.

    drwxrwxr-- 4 user root 4096 Sep 2 12:37 ./HDD/

I plan on installing all but storage hungry applications on the SSD, which is owned by root, and only files/media on the HDD.

Does root, as the group, need to have rwx access to the HDD for installs/automatic file creation to function? Does root even need to be the group?

Do I, as the owner, need to have rwx access or will rw- suffice until I install an application on the HDD?

Can o stay at r-- without causing problems?

I am the only on using this machine.

    Thank you!

    Help related to Arch Linux

So I installed Arch linux today , set it up and customised it. The problem is lockscreen time is different from the time seen when I login.

How do I make both the time match?

    I have ntp enabled

Update: Its SOLVED now. I fixed it just now. Here's what had happened:

The clock applet had timezone set but not timedatectl . I set correct timezone in timedatectl and then did hwclock —systohc it worked.

Cloning dualboot system to new SSD

    Posted: 02 Sep 2021 10:05 AM PDT

Hello, I have a 1TB HDD with Fedora and Windows dual boot and I want to clone it to a new 256GB SSD.

I looked at Clonezilla and will probably use it but I have some questions.

Clonezilla doesn't clone if the source is bigger than the destination. So I obviously have to shrink partitions. How can I do that? Is it okay to simply shrink them and leave them fragmented? Or should I move them next to each other.

Moving '/' and C: will probably break grub.

    What should I do?

Is there any difference between setting environment in /etc/environment or in .bashrc/.zshrc?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2021 06:11 AM PDT

    Hello guys,

So, is there any difference in terms of safety for example? Because as I know setting it in .\*rc sets environment for current user and /etc/environment system-wide.

But I noticed all variables set in /etc/environment working fine but when I tried for example export MOZ_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 in shell config it simply didn't work. So I decided stick to the /etc/environment. And I tried set it up in ~/.config/environment.d/* (created by myself), didn't work either.

Which distro would you recomend for this PC?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2021 09:55 AM PDT

I have a old PC running Windows 10 but it is getting slower and slower and it's starting to be a real pain to use it. So i wanted to install a linux distro on it (I already used linux and liked it) but I don't know which one to choose. I need stability, so I was thinking of a ubuntu or debian based distribution, but I also want a fast and good-looking desktop even if I have to tweak it a bit to get a good look. My Pc's specs are:

    CPU: 64bits Intel core 2 quad q8200 2.33GHz

4Gb ram (I'm not sure if DDR2 or DDR3 but I think its the frist)

    148Gb HDD

Thaks in advance for your help.

Improving as a noob linux user and discovering things (General base setup improvement advice)

    Posted: 02 Sep 2021 05:35 AM PDT

    Some background:
Initially got interested in linux after stumbling upon r/unixporn. But now I feel like I should get more knowledge in the basics before I should move on to the whole ricing game. Most of what I know is based off of YouTube content and casual reading on wiki and support pages.
I am not familiar with file systems and partition formatting(a noob at linux in general), I followed the arch wiki and used FAT32 for EFI, ext4 for root and mkswap(idk what exactly it is) for swap. Only have had a single root partition, an efi partition and a swap(2x size of RAM). I mount root at /mnt as I should, swapon for swap, and mount EFI at /boot/efi.

Looking to improve on how I have done things up until now, I tried reading through support sites and found some alternatives one might consider:
Mounting EFI partition at /EFI is the new standard?
Making separate partitions for /home, /usr and things like that
Btrfs, LVM, Raid0 are something that were also things I found interesting
Using alternatives to grub like rEFInd
If i plan to game on linux, is there anything on the base level(not drivers/dependencies) that I can do to improve my experience? I remember that it was vaguely mentioned somewhere that some kernels might offer better performance.
    512MB EFI partition is enough?

Mostly, what I am looking for is when and why doing any of the above optimizations/tweaks would be useful, and not necessarily the how(but that would be helpful too!). I know things like LVM are mostly hugely unnecessary especially when using only one hard disk, but again I am only looking to learn why things like these exist or if i should use them in anyway in the future.

I don't know if all this would be productive in anyway for my life or career, but feels incredibly rewarding to get into; especially with such a nice community around it.
Thank you for your help r/linux4noobs users!

PS: One of my first proper text posts on reddit, will improve the formatting as I make more :)

    dual boot problem

    Posted: 02 Sep 2021 08:50 AM PDT

Simply put: I have lost overview it seems there are 3 steps i can take now and I don't know what to do.
I have installed POP_OS! in a different partition than the old windows 7 install. The partition still exists and has data on it. When I installed POP_OS! I chose "something else". I left the bootloader at what standard is and I thought there was Systemd-boot preinstalled but when I boot up it just boots into POP_OS! I have found multiple thing about repairing bootloaders or installing some through the command line or with a live USB and I don't know what to do now. It is a BIOS boot laptop.

    Thanks in advance.

Change default application to select/open files with?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2021 08:24 AM PDT

I use a cli file manager most of the time, but when I need to select or open a file (ie ctrl+O in a browser), it brings up a default file selecting menu.

I installed Dolphin just so that it would use that, but it still opens that default one. I also set the default mimetype of inode/directory to /usr/share/applications/org.kde.dolphin.desktop but it still doesn't work. Does anyone know if/how I can change that?

I'm using DWM on arch btw.
