It's been nearly a year since I tried Linux, I like it but trying to game (or use win programs) through wine really hurts the performance, it is holding me back from completely going for Linux. How do I alleviate this?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 06:08 AM PDT

So I have been using Linux for nearly a year now, first with Ubuntu now with Arch Linux. I really love the way Linux works and it really is productive for my programming stuff and also no telemetries is a massive plus. However, as much as I want to, I also wanna play videos games and my PC isn't good, it likes to run things natively or else the performance will be horrid.

On Windows, games such as Battlefield 4 and Resident Evil 7 are usually playable at 30-60FPS, minor FPS drops in action intensive moments, but still playable.

On Linux, I tried playing BF4 and RE7 through wine-staging and proton with the latest Nvidia driver, I tried to use esync, I used custom kernels to be able to try fsync. But the performance was just absolutely bad, for BF4 the FPS went from 60 to 13 even with DXVK, for RE7 it went from 60 to 30.

Dual booting is the only feasible way for me to actually run Windows games and programs perfectly for me unfortunately and it really is annoying.

I'd love to know if there are any more ways to alleviate the performance issues with wine.

    My specs:

    CPU: Intel Pentium G3240 @ 3.10GHz

    GPU: NVIDIA Quadro K620

    RAM: 6GB

OS: Arch Linux / Windows 10

Virtualize Windows 11 and Switch to Linux for main OS

    Posted: 28 Sep 2021 07:35 PM PDT

    Hi all,

What is the best approach for virtualizing my existing Windows 11 installation (on a Thinkpad Extreme Gen2), and switching the main OS to a Linux distro? I'm looking at PopOS.

Is there a VirtualBox tool I can use to convert my Windows 11 installation? Then I'm assuming I'd wipe my drive, install PopOS, install VirtualBox, then import my Windows 11 VM?

Usb-Wifi adapter stops working unexpectedly (TL-WN823N)

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 09:11 AM PDT

    Dear linux community

I set up my Desktop Pc with ubuntu i3 and everything is working great except for the network. When i boot the Pc it works fine but a after about 5 minutes into my workflow every application receives 0 data. what's weird is that the bottom bar is still showing that I'm connected with the same strength. I installed wavemon to get some data and this is what it shows:

    at boot up

    once nothing works anymore

It's very weird that there is practically no difference. I really don't know what to look for. I installed all the drivers and even the fixes for the wifi adapter. I use a TP-Link TL-WN823N btw and it is not possible to get a lan connection. The adapter was very slow in the beginning (3mb/s) but once I installed the driver it went up to 50mb/s, which is still low compared to the 250mb/s every other device in this flat gets, even at the same location as my pc, but it's tolerable i guess.

Another trace i followed was that the usb devices on my pc seem to malfunction in general. During the writing of this post my mouse went off unrecoverably for example, but if my usb wifi adapter would be influenced by this, the system wouldn't show it as still being connected, right?

I also tried unplugging the adapter and replugging it but my system doesn't recognize it at all then.

    My concrete questions are thus:

    1. Do any of you know a program with wich i can "reconnect" the wifi? nmtui is very unhelpful since it shows that I'm still connected. Once i deactivate the connection it doesn't reconnect me however :/ something like bluetoothctl but for wifi would be nice.

    2. Do any of you know a program i can monitor usb malfunctions with?

Bad idea to set ~/bin higher precedence than /usr/local/bin?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 10:47 AM PDT

Is it a bad idea to set ~/bin to be higher precedence than /usr/local/bin (e.g. from a security or system admin standpoint)?

I am currently symlinking some scripts from ~/bin/ to /usr/local/bin. Just setting ~/bin to higher precedence than /usr/local/bin would mean I don't need to symlink anymore. I don't like to store the scripts in /usr/local/bin because it's easier for version control to track unprivileged directories (still figuring out a solution to track configs in /etc -- I have heard of etckeeper but not sure if there is a more robust solution or if it's "good enough").

Previously I have used shell aliases/functions for simple commands to pass my preferred default arguments, however, this does not seem appropriate/possible to use with other scripts and systemd unit services so I am using scripts instead.

    Google Chrome and repositories (Pop_OS!)

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 10:00 AM PDT

    Hey folks,

I have a question for you and I hope you'll be able to help me!
First of all, I know that google chrome is kind of frowned upon among Linux users, but there are 2 extensions that I need every now and then, so I still need it as a backup even though I'm mostly using firefox... Now, I think I haven't quite understood what repositories do exactly, but I do know that they more or less act as a source from which you can download certain software. The thing is, when downloading chrome it tells me that it has to add the google-chrome repos to keep it up to date, but I was wondering if google could use these to secretly install other software to my system, send user data to their servers (I'll have to live with the fact that google chrome will do that either way) or if the google-chrome repo can only be used by google chrome for updates and such. I would be very glad if you could give me a quick rundown of what repos can and cannot do, since I'm not an English native so I've only really learnt what the term means by gathering info from context! I kind of need google chrome still, but don't wanna open myself up more than I need to. :)

    Thanks in advance

Why does "nice" value exist along side "priority" ?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 12:26 PM PDT

I don't see much of usefulness having a user space only "nice" value for process. I dig a bit on the internet and read somewhere that "nice" is from POSIX and hence it is kept, but linux only use non-standard priority value.

Very few mention about why "nice" exist at all tho. Does anybody know a bit of the history here ? xD

    DIY Router AND Modem help

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 12:17 PM PDT

I'm looking to see if I can use Linux as a modem and router for my home's internet. I found a large amount of documentation on how to make a Linux-based router, but not a Linux-based modem or modem/router combo.

Has anyone ever attempted this? Is it possible? If so, how did you even go about this with almost no reference material?

I'm not asking for anyone to do it for me (I'm not a complete noob to Linux. I know better than that), but if someone could steer me the right way, it'd be greatly appreciated.

Hardware acceleration (Web browser specifically) with Nvidia Ampere on Pop!_OS?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 03:18 AM PDT

So I'm finally trying Linux again after trying (and breaking) Manjaro a few months ago but there is one somewhat major thing that is really bugging me- no matter what I try, I can't seem to get full hardware acceleration in Firefox or Google Chrome. I have tried tons of different flags, tried running Pop OS in Wayland mode (was pretty laggy and I'm not sure I fully set it up despite reinstalling 470 Nvidia drivers so I switched back to X11).

When playing back hi-res videos it's pretty obvious they're being decoded by the CPU as my fans ramp up and video playback is inconsistent with many dropped frames and a lot of freezing. I think VP9 specifically is the worst but they all do it.

I'm not sure what to do to get GPU video decoding to work in a browser, if it's even possible with Ampere currently. If it's not something that can be done I might have to give up on the idea of Linux for now since as minor as it might seem, it has already been very noticeable and annoying.

Maybe I have missed something? Any suggestions are appreciated

    Screen tearing and FPS problems

    Posted: 28 Sep 2021 09:52 PM PDT

Hello, I am having problems with V-Sync in ubuntu. It is my first time ever using Linux.

I just installed Ubuntu yesterday, but there is so much screen tearing even while using desktop apps and moving windows around.

I tried Minecraft yesterday and even when I turn on V-Sync, I still get screen tearing and the FPS doesn't get capped to my monitor's refresh rate. Even when the game is running at 100+ fps constantly, it is not smooth

I tried going to NVIDIA Control Panel, but there are not the settings shown in the videos. I have updated the drivers.

It is a laptop with NVIDIA MX250 and Intel UHD graphics. Also, if you can suggest some other Linux distributions that I can use for playing games, it would be awesome. Thanks!

    Problem with Grub on Debian

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 09:25 AM PDT

Hello, my name is Maxi, I am learning Linux, but my problem is that I am installing Debian 11 (32bits) on an old PC:

    AMD Athlon XP 2000+

    FX 5200 (128MB)

    Ram 1512mb

I know that they say that Debian is not highly recommended for newbies, but I see that it is very good and one of the few distros that still has 32-bit support, I installed it and everything was fine but at the moment of starting the Grub the screen remains in black, I imagine it will be that it does not recognize the resolution or the video card, I cannot find solutions on the internet, I only found how to solve it in Ubuntu but when pressing "e" the commands that appear in the Debian Grub are not the same, I tried recovery mode but the same thing happens, someone tells me what to do? Thank you

    grub

    \"e\" in first option

    \"e\" in advanced options

linux for microsoft sureface pro 4

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 09:14 AM PDT

    Hey
I use my sureface for nearly 5 years now and I've run into multible software (Os) bounded issues with it (running windows 10 on it). The touch input doesn't work in a certain area (like 30% of the screen) and the pen input doesn't work as well in like 10% of the screen. Now the camera doesn't run eather since last weekend and I've already thought about switching to linux. As at least for the input errors there is no (working) fix out there nor is microsoft working on it... I could get it exchanged from microsoft for a few hundred bugs but I want to deal with this as low waste (& cost) as possible.
Now I already did some reseach about Mint and Ubuntu but at least as main pc kernel I'm totally new to linux (I KNOW that most IoTs and stuff run on some form of linux but that doesn't help me here) as an Os.
So to my questions: What version of linux would you recommend me for using it on my sureface pro 4? Have you any experince with linux using it on that device or do you know a good yt video or other post about that?
    Thx

Could someone suggest me a Distro?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 07:25 AM PDT

Sorry, im sure this is like, the only type of post you guys get. So im shamelessly giving you another.

    Anyway, here are my needs:

    • Works well with Nvidia Optimus (swapping between GPU and onboard Laptop gfx when needed to save battery)
    • Decent with gaming
    • Privacy features, like say what you'd see in PopOS would be nice too (mb just PopOS then? How's it do with the other two?)
    • XFCE Desktop environment support
    • Make 4k not tiny on a small screen well, whatever fancy term you call it (I know. I wholeheartedly regret getting a 16 inch 4k screen.)
    • Ideally Debian based, as everything ive messed with thus far is Debian based as well.

Currently I'm on Debian Bullseye - and I like it overall, but it doesn't play well with optimus (I was able to install whatever the bumblebee spinoff was, and it now runs in battery mode, but it doesn't really switch to GPU well.

The GPU is a bit weird too - it's a Quadro which is basically a 1050 that's made for engineering not gaming. Idk if that affects anything but thought it was worth mentioning.

    Laptop is : https://www.lenovo.com/sg/en/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpad-p-series/ThinkPad-P51/p/22TP2WPWP51

possible to run GUI applications on one machine but use them on another?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 06:52 AM PDT

I have 2 devices: a low end netbook running GalliumOS and a desktop Mac. Mac will be upgraded to linux sometime in the future and I want to know if this idea I have is stupid, and if feasible what to take into account.

tldr: Can I run GUI applications on one machine but use them on the other? OR is there something like tmux for X?

    my thought process:

    • The netbook is nice but low on resources. Good enough 95% of the time.
    • Sometimes I would like to run something that is a bit too demanding due to storage or RAM/CPU. Or that I would like to start a long-running task that doesn't stop when the netbook leaves the premises or goes to sleep.
    • For cli-based applications can ssh to desktop, and run there I believe.
    • What about GUI based applications though?
    • I tried using VNC client on chromeOS to MacOS but it was very slow as expected. I don't know what the source of that was: server, client or network.
    • VNC mirrors or interacts with the whole system, but in my use case, I only want to be able to run a single program. So less draggy?
    • I am wondering if the two computers can "share" the workload in a way that would make the transmission between them less onerous; like the main work of the program is being done on the desktop but the actual windows are being drawn by the netbook. Or something. Maybe that is insane?

If the above is not totally bonkers,

    • is there any consideration to "matching" the two devices insofar as distros, window mangers etc goes?
    • would there be user/permissions mess?
    • I imagine there would be some sorts of tasks this would be more suitable for than others. e.g. would not expect to be able to play a game requiring fast reactions or do video editing.

This is to be done only/primarily while I'm local on the same LAN, not from afar.

I know that unix was originally used in a terminal fashion but have never done much that way (millennial here).

It's called "x server" but from what I understand it's not really a server in the way the term is colloquially used. Or is it?

I anticipate that should the above be workable it will not be equivalent experience to having a laptop with same specs as desktop. Just looking to extend the capabilities of my existing equipment as much as possible to avoid needlessly purchasing more.

Would appreciate being set on the right path here.

Partly I imagine if this sort of thing was practical, it would be commonly done. It's kind of what "cloud" is but not via a web interface.

    thank you!

but when i try to ssh it show me this even with using pem file.

We trust you have received the usual lecture from the local System

Administrator. It usually boils down to these three things:

#1) Respect the privacy of others.

    #2) Think before you type.

#3) With great power comes great responsibility.

    [sudo] password for myuser:

when i press ctrl + D it go away and let me login. but why i this even coming. ?

even when i am loged in my server as root and do su <myuser> it still ask me same thing . why is this happning . funny thing is i haven't even set a password for this user.
