Posted: 31 Aug 2021 11:07 PM PDT Is there some bigger difference between distros beyond just those things? As in, if you were to remove all of those things, what would be left to set different distros apart? Or are all distros just a coat of paint over the same Linux kernel? [link] [comments] |
I've been trying Ubuntu and other Ubuntu-based distros and I have three problems. Posted: 01 Sep 2021 09:58 AM PDT
It's so frustrating having encountered these problems as a beginner. I haven't even tried any complicated terminal shit. I've wanted to use Linux for daily use, but I don't think I can get used to it.
Edit: I'm using an Acer Aspire 3 laptop with the following specs:
I'm also dual booting with Windows 10. [link] [comments] |
Why linux do not have 'program files' folder like Windows? Posted: 01 Sep 2021 06:58 AM PDT On Windows all user installed software is located in 'program files' folder which, i think, is more organized way to install software: all files of installed program are in c:\program files\app-name. In linux all files of installed program are spread over different location in the system which, i think, is more disorganized. Why linux do not have a folder like 'program files'? Or can you create linux distro that have folder like this: [link] [comments] |
New to desktop Linux, and need some help setting up a few small things please Posted: 01 Sep 2021 12:33 PM PDT First of all here are the OS/Specs, this is my first time trying to run Desktop Linux outside of of a VM, and most of that was school-related. And I'll just post a list of issues (in order of severity), rather than making a gwot, hope thats okay.

Your favorite terminal emulators and why? Posted: 01 Sep 2021 12:59 PM PDT What are your favorite terminal emulators and why? I'm using URXVT in Qtile but some of the keyboard shortcuts I'm finding online aren't working. For instance copying and pasting is supposed to be alt+c and ctrl+insert but they do nothing for me. I used URXVT honestly mostly because it looked nice and transparency worked. Is there a config where I can see key shortcuts? Or is there a better terminal emulator you'd recommend? Is the Samsung Evo 870 SATA SSD compatible with Ubuntu 18.04? Posted: 01 Sep 2021 12:51 PM PDT I am looking to run a dual boot of windows 10 alongside Ubuntu 18.04. Does anyone know of an SSD that is known to work well with Ubuntu 18.04? [link] [comments] |
It's possible to set default zoom directly on my webcam? To get the zoom before open any app Posted: 01 Sep 2021 12:25 PM PDT I want to set zoom in my c920 webcam, but IDK how to do this, I just tested the zoom in OBS, but I want the zoom every time and before using the apps. Is there a web or a way to check if certain app/software is supported in a linux distro? Posted: 01 Sep 2021 08:25 AM PDT I am really considering to jump into the Linux OS, specifically Pop.os, but first i want to know if all or at least the crucial apps/software i use are supported in this distro, i just have one machine (so i dont have the chance to install and check my self) also i tried some vm but the web i found for doing the vm test is terrible (too slow, the response awful as well as the image quality) Some advice? thanks in advance [link] [comments] |

I'm currently running Garuda Linux, and I'm trying to use crontab to make a terminal open up and run bpytop as soon as I log into my computer. I have: 1) ran "crontab -e" 2) entered "@reboot /home/username/Documents/autostart.sh" into my crontab 3) created the above script with the following: #!/bin/bash konsole -e /usr/bin/bpytop What have I done wrong? I have a question about clipboards and copy and pasting Posted: 01 Sep 2021 09:32 AM PDT This might seem obvious to most of you, but I'm not sure how the clipboard works. I recently got into i3 with endeavourOS, and so I'm starting so see parts of my system that I would never see otherwise. I'm trying to copy and paste something into a browser with nano, but it doesn't work. Is the clipboard a base Linux functionality? Does it need an app to function? Copy and pasting works just fine in firefox, so does does nano have its own clipboard? I'm a noob please enlighten me. [link] [comments] |
How do I make dwm/i3 available from the cog icon after building them? Posted: 01 Sep 2021 11:19 AM PDT I am trying to install dwm or i3 on my computer and I want to customise dwm so I am building it myself. I'm using:
and
Inside the directory but on the login screen it's not available. If I install them using apt or apt-get then they are available at login. What do I need to do to build my own version rather than use apt? Where do I put it? I'm using ZorinOS if that helps. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Sep 2021 11:06 AM PDT Context: I have a laptop for highschool, but during the summer i lent it to my sister because she was away from home but she sill needed to do her bachelor's thesis. Now I need it back, but turns out she has installed a bunch of bloatware and games on it (Like genshin impact and minecraft with way too many mods) It has Windows on it, but considering that I have to wipe it anyway, i had the idea of installing Pop!_os on it. I could open the laptop up and just wipe the entire ssd with another computer, but I've tried to open that laptop before and feels like it's going to break before it opens. Here's the question: Can I shrink Windows, install Pop!_OS, Wipe Windows from Pop's GUI, reformat that partition, and claim it as Pop's? My highschool just requires "a laptop", no OS specifically. So if they need some windows propietary crap shame on them. Another question: I've been saying Pop!_OS because it's one of those distros that Just Works™ and I personally like it, but would you recommend something else for a low power laptop? (Pentium gold 2 cores 4 threads, integrated intel graphics) [link] [comments] |

Posted: 01 Sep 2021 02:10 PM PDT I have been attempting to get it to install for hours now. Every time I get to the desktop, in the live boot image, it locks up and the only way out is a hard shutdown/reboot. Has anyone else had this issue? I've tried installing it with and without uefi. If I try without I get some issue regarding grub. Also tried installing Ubuntu, got it to install no problem but I still had a similar lock up issue but not as often. I have done nvme disk checks and it's fine. Specs are: 3600x, 2060, 970 evo plus. [link] [comments] |
Changing filesystem type on external HDD Posted: 01 Sep 2021 01:15 PM PDT I'm running LMDE 4 fyi I have an (internal made external HDD, I'm using a SATA to usb) that I pulled from a laptop running windows. I formatted it to FAT32 through a right-click format option and than moved a bunch of media onto it. I was trying to change permissions through chown/chmod/chgrp so my plex server can access the files. After hours of trial and error (permission denied) I've come to realize it is still on msdos file type. I understand I need it to be EXT4 file type, but why does it say msdos and not FAT32 (even though I know I cant alter that type either)? TIA [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Sep 2021 05:07 AM PDT I have MX installed to a thumb drive plugged into an HP laptop and it has been booting regularly for the past while. Today, I tried booting it and it just doesn't. It gets past grub and the initial MX loading screen, but it just goes to BusyBox built in shell and does not go to MX Linux. Any help would be appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Trying to write first startup script and cronjob. . . What am I doing wrong? Posted: 01 Sep 2021 12:27 PM PDT I am trying to get this script located in /usr/local/sbin to execute at startup using crontab. I made this script named sleep.sh did sudo chmod +x /usr/local/sbin/sleep.sh Then I went over to crontab -e and made this: However when I restart to test my computer still immediately wakes from sleep. Posted: 01 Sep 2021 12:14 PM PDT I recently installed arch Linux and I installed kde. I am trying to use i3 window manager and while on kde I can connect with the WiFi icon, but on i3 I can't. And yes I know i3 is just a wm, but I have no idea what I should pull up in i3 to get a WiFi GUI. I am using network manager currently. I tried using nmctl but The WiFi I want to connect to uses a username and password so Idk. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Sep 2021 11:50 AM PDT I am currently using ubuntu and would like to setup dhcp in the linux vms that I set up. In the guide I was looking at, it said to set the linux vm from NAT to an internal network. And then to input vboxmanage dhcpserver add --network=(name of network for my vm) --server-ip=10.38.1.1 --lower-ip=10.38.1.110 --upper-ip=10.38.1.120 --netmask=255.255.255.0 --enable in the terminal. Thing is, I am using linux as my host machine while the guide was using windows 10. When I went to check the ip address for vm, it would still match the ip address of my host machine, so this method clearly did not work. Is there a proper way to do so in linux? A package I have to install in order for this to work? [link] [comments] |
Is autorun enabled by default? Posted: 01 Sep 2021 05:25 AM PDT I heard on windows there was malware that could spread by just plugging in a usb by using something called autorun. Does this exist for ubuntu based os es and is it enabled by default? If so how do i turn it off? Distro: Pop!_OS [link] [comments] |

Posted: 01 Sep 2021 10:36 AM PDT I have stumbled upon this problem as I need to configure the language and locale stuff again and I have used Lubuntu before so I am more curious on how things work than just getting them to work. There is this website here that was the only one that got me how to install Shift JIS to the system, there is a command like this: that I don't know the mechanism behind it, it basically generate a locale binary from ja_JP description file and SHIFT_JIS charmap, to the directory that I just extracted, essentially overwriting it and adding an archive. Does that mean I don't even need the locale binary to begin with? Does that also mean the OS actually has the SJIS charmap uncompiled? Or did I mess up the whole thing? There is another website that I can find that straight out omitted the ./ja_JP.sjis and warning suppression, but it gave no description on how it works either. I also found that Fedora does not use locale-gen but only localedef, and that locale-gen actually invokes localedef, does that mean the following locale-gen is redundant? Final question is why -i and -f not require absolute path, how do I specify a file that is at my ~? I am not sure if this is the place to ask or should I ask the fellas over at r/linuxquestions, but this seems to be quite fundamental, I would be grateful to any useful answers to the questions. bcache -> unable to attach cache to backing or stop bcache Posted: 01 Sep 2021 10:08 AM PDT Hi all, I'm trying to setup bcache on my system but am failing to attach the cache to the backing device, to make things worse I'm also not able to make any changes to the config. The setup: OS: Manjaro Gnome (fully updated) lsblk output: [kenneth-Manjaro block]# lsblk NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINTS loop0 7:0 0 65,1M 1 loop /var/lib/snapd/snap/gtk-common-themes/1515 Backing device Bcache info: sb.magic ok Caching device Bcache info: THE PROBLEM(S): So, everything until this step worked fine: echo 662f82bb-5dea-4e59-b514-fea2870ea56b > /sys/block/bcache0/bcache/attach When executing this command (as root) I currently get this: [kenneth-Manjaro block]# echo 662f82bb-5dea-4e59-b514-fea2870ea56b > /sys/block/bcache0/bcache/attach bash: echo: write error: Invalid argument When trying to stop Bcache I get a permission denied, even whilst being root. [kenneth-Manjaro block]# echo 1 > /sys/block/md0/bcache/stop bash: /sys/block/md0/bcache/stop: Permission denied Yet I'm clearly root: [kenneth-Manjaro block]# whoami root [kenneth-Manjaro block]# So now I'm left with a non-working Bcache setup and there appears to be nothing I can do to resolve it. MANY THANKS! [link] [comments] |
