We can detect the operating system of a remote system based on the TTL (Time to live) value. Posted: 20 Sep 2021 09:38 AM PDT I came across this tip recently. Ping a remote host in your network. If the TTL value is 64, it is probably Linux/Unix. If the TTL value is 128, it might be Windows. Example: Sample output: The TTL value is 64 in the above output. So It could be either Linux or Unix system. You can find the Initial TTL values of various operating systems and devices here. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 20 Sep 2021 11:03 AM PDT Ok, so i finally figured out what i need to do before i start doing things with the disk that i'll regret later(like deleting partitions and such). So as i've mentioned previously i accidentally put Pop os on more than one drive. What i want to do is get rid of the version of Pop os on my hdd so i can properly use it on my real version of pop os on my ssd. how can this be done? [link] [comments] |
LinuxMint DDE vs Ubuntu DDE vs Ubuntu DDE Remix OS vs Deepin OS? Posted: 20 Sep 2021 01:16 PM PDT There are infos all over the internet about the data leaking allegations about Deepin OS. Some says it was false allegations, some says they cant be trusted anymore anyways. Thus some of my questions are: 1) Which of these options are the most beginner friendly and feels better to use? 2) For Ubuntu DDE, Linux Mint DDE and UbuntuDDE Remix. Does the uniqueness, features and all that jazz of the Base OS (Linux Mint/Ubuntu) stays the same when the Deepin DE gets installed there? 3) Is installing Ubuntu and then installing the DDE, same as installing UbuntuDDE Remix OS? Or are both the same thing? 4) Suppose, Deepin OS ACTUALLY has those data tracking system and leaking stuff as the allegation. If thats the case, then taking the DDE only in Ubuntu or LinuxMint is risky? I mean, when the DDE is installed, only the desktop environment customizations are being ported to LinuxMint/Ubuntu, or everything of Deepin OS gets ported there (including those stuff from Deepin that leaks data, if the allegations were true)? 5) Apart from Security Trust Issues and all, among all the 4, except Deepin OS itself, how much similar to Deepin OS experience can only the DDE give thru Ubuntu or LinuxMint? Posted: 20 Sep 2021 11:31 AM PDT I'm on Linux mint 20.2 Cinnamon running on an Asus ROG zephyrus laptop. It's using HDA Intel PCH as the sound card and Realtek ALC294 as the chip This is definatley a weird issue, but the audio sounds crushed, like a bitcrush filter. Any ideas how to make it sound smoother? It isn't very bad either, it's just enough to be noticable. [link] [comments] |

How do I connect my Gaomon s620 driver to my laptop? Posted: 20 Sep 2021 09:34 AM PDT I've switched to Linux about 2 months, and I'm loving it, but I can't connect the drivers from my drawing tablet, I used Wine to run the drivers because they are available only on Windows and Mac. It downloaded ok, but when it opened, the driver say that there is not any tablet connected. I tried to use OpenTabletDriver, but the program don't let me use hotkeys with more than one key. And now the program don't open anymore, it just crashes. It's there a way to use the official driver from my tablet on my laptop, or is there other program that I can use? Note: I'm using Manjaro, and my tablet detect movement without drivers, but I can't regulate pressure and hotkeys on it. And english is not my primary language, so sorry if I make any mistakes. [Help] Bash prompt with GIT information Posted: 20 Sep 2021 09:34 AM PDT I've been working on customising my bash PS1 prompt to include git information. I'm aiming for a prompt such as the following (with nice formatted colors)... The first half of this is pretty easy to achieve, however the git part is somewhat more difficult. I've been able to get git information displayed using the following in my .bashrc, however it does not display a "*" when there are uncommited changes. Can anyone think how I can include some code in this PS1 to test if the current git repo indeed has uncommited changes and prepend a "*" to the branch name? EDIT: I think there's a git script I could include in my bashrc which can do this with some special formatting string, I'm not sure how that would wortk though :/ [link] [comments] |
How do I change the default user in Linux? Posted: 20 Sep 2021 09:30 AM PDT I cloned a long-running, stable Linux Lite VM. After cloning, I started it up and made a bunch of changes that distinguish it from the original. Among other things, I went to Control Panel>About Me and changed the name. I went to Lite User Manager and added a new user. I made sure to tick all the same 'group' boxes as the original username (i.e. I can access the host/guest shared directory). I went to Lite Auto Login, selected Enable Auto Login, used the drop-down to select the new user, and authenticated. When I restart, I open terminal and it looks like the username is the original, not the new username. ETA: I even tried going to Auto Login and disabling both accounts, restarting, then enabling just the new account. But when I restart, terminal says I'm the old account (both what it displays as a directory and when I type whoami). I'm clearly missing a key step, but I can't find it. I'd greatly appreciate someone pointing out the obvious, thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 20 Sep 2021 09:09 AM PDT Arch linux, usb wifi adapter model is RT5372. Despite me being very close to the router, and other devices having speeds of >100MiB/s, my wifi adapter has been giving me speeds of <1MiB/s, and the wifi connection has recently started cutting out at random only on this device. I've tried looking for drivers, but upstream ones only support up to kernel 2.x, and i'm on kernel 5.14.x. Any help would be appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Final Post about choosing a distro. Posted: 20 Sep 2021 09:07 AM PDT Hi there everyone , I will be going to university this year to study Physics. Due to the road that MS has taken , I will really like to move out of Windows , that's why I decided to install a Linux distro on the laptop that I am going to buy (of course I will have Win10 for gaming on my PC and also in dual boot on laptop in case something goes wrong so no need to suggest that.) After some search that I did on my own and 3 posts I posted on Linux subreddits , the most suggested distros for what I am going to do where :
What I want from the distro is to be compatible with most Linux apps , kinda new look not that old , stability and updates for at least 5 years. I do not have that much experience yet so I do not what the differences are and what would be the best and that's why I would like some help to decide. Just commenting which one you prefer out of the 5 is helpful too if you do not want to get into details. I do not think I will be considering another distro though so please talk about the 5 mentioned above^^. If you are in a university mention it , especially if you are studying the same major! Thanks in advance! (I have made previous posts comparing Mint , Ubuntu and Devian but a lot of people recommended other distros so I had to ask again to be sure since I will not have switching to another distro) [link] [comments] |
