How do I stop OpenDNS applying my laptop's 'Home' settings to my workplace wifi? Posted: 19 Sep 2021 10:13 AM PDT At home, I use an ISP with dynamic IP on a laptop. OpenDNS is set up in a certain way to restrict sites. I take my laptop into work and use their wifi. OpenDnS (I guess) thinks I'm still on my home network, just on a different IP so continues to block the same sites, but I want different filters while I'm at work. Whilst at work, I try to set up a new account using the wifi IP I can now see, but OpenDnS says I can't assign that (workplace) IP to a new account because it thinks it is already dynamically assigned to the 'Home' network. What do I do? [link] [comments] |
Two separate coaxial networks in house, can I make them one? Posted: 19 Sep 2021 02:18 PM PDT I just bought a house and there seem to be two separate coaxial networks in the house, one for cable TV and one for a satellite dish. TL:dr Can I easily connect them? Details: We subscribed to cable Internet (Xfinity). A few of the coax cables coming out of the walls are "hot" for that (meaning that if I attach them to the cable modem, it connects to Xfinity). But most do not connect. The previous owners had Dish TV (the dish is still on the roof), and I am guessing the coax terminals that don't connect to Xfinity are wired to the dish. The location where I'd like to put our cable modem and router seems to be only wired for the dish. But some other rooms have terminals for both xfinity and the dish. So my question is, can I go to one of those rooms and join the two networks into one? And if so, is it as easy as connecting the coax cables with a coupler, and then boom I've got one coax network? Or is that too easy? [link] [comments] |
Lost on how to install ethernet cabling in existing house Posted: 19 Sep 2021 06:02 PM PDT (Note: complete networking and house DIY newbie here; I may misuse vocabulary or get concepts wrong completely) Context: I'm currently moving to a new house and am in the middle of renovations. I'd like to install ethernet cabling throughout the house so that I can get at least one ethernet port per room in the house connected to my ISP's modem or router or whatever-the-thing-that-provides-the-internet is. This house is a 2-story house. There is no attic or basement, which, from what I can tell, will make setting this up way harder? At the very least, most of the solutions I see seem to make use of an attic or basement... From what I can tell, currently there is telephone cabling throughout the house, with 1 port per room on the second floor as well as 1 port in the kitchen on the first floor. Additionally, there are a few holes punched in the walls and in the 2F floor/1F ceiling to install some lighting fixtures, which could potentially be access points for new cabling? Existing cabling: This is what each port looks like; the ports are only connected to 4 wires, which I believe means that they're intended for use with telephones and not ethernet. However, in all of them, there are 4 additional unused wires wrapped in the back. More importantly, I can't tell what kind of cable it's using. There's no lettering, so I don't know if I'm supposed to replace the cables to ensure they're Cat5/6. I believe these ports terminate outside the house here, in a Telephone Network Interface box. However, I haven't tested this with a probe yet. Questions: Am I able to repurpose these telephone ports as ethernet ports? Should I replace the existing cables? How hard would it be to run new cables if I don't have an attic or basement? A combination of the 2 questions above: would it be difficult adding an extra ethernet port (i.e: turning each 1-port into a 2-port for ethernet)? Would this process involve removing a lot of drywall? I'd like to know since I do have a contractor working on the house right now and I'd like to ensure I talk out any potential drywall teardowns with him first... If at all possible, I'd like to install a patch panel as a centralized hub for all of these ports. It sounds like a good idea for basic cable management for internet and troubleshooting. Would it be possible to move the termination points from outside of the house to somewhere inside the house, or would it be monumentally difficult with no attic or basement? Thanks to whoever actually made it to the end of this post, I know it's a big wall of text but I've never done any home DIY at all, let alone cabling :\ [link] [comments] |
Posted: 19 Sep 2021 11:58 AM PDT Is it possible to wirelessly extended a Netgear Nighthawk Wi-Fi network? I have one setup as a router and another I could use in the loft. There's no wired connection between the two so it must be wireless. Looking at the manual, it doesn't seem like it's possible, but figured I'd ask. [link] [comments] |
how do I access Router set as access point but possibly with static WAN IP that I don't know Posted: 19 Sep 2021 04:29 PM PDT I have two routers running Fresh Tomato. One is connected to my ISP. The other has DHCP turned off and is wired to first router to provide WiFi at the other end of the house. I had used the number 2 router as an access point as part of setup where I had multiple WiFi networks. I probably gave it a static IP, maybe even as part of a different subnet due to a VPN configuration. So it works fine as it is now but it drives me crazy that I can't figure out what the IP is for router 2. It does not show up in the device list of router 1. It doesn't show up in ipconfig. Is there a way to get this router's IP? The only thing I can think of is to reset it and reconfigure but I'm feeling lazy about it because it works fine. [link] [comments] |

I think my home network has been compromised with an ARP poisoning or MAC spoof Posted: 19 Sep 2021 05:16 AM PDT The first screenshot is a trace of the wireshark requests. The second is the arp -a command. I think someone is out to get me. Here is why and what I've done so far My environment consist of 1 laptop and 1 router. I believe this originated from a telegram video chat On one of my google account, a message came up for a suspicious app detected on my device. After a USB windows re-install the error was still there. I ran wireshark and saw many ARP requests that were not there before. I compared my wireshark with my friends wireshark on different networks and mine was much more cluttered with random requests. I've ran malwarebytes, hitmanpro, adware v3, and rKill and all of them found nothing. The ARP requests are being rerouted to my router then sent to the broadcast address (FF) Im fairly new to networking so I would like to know if I am losing my mind or something is really there. I think a device has been installed on my laptop that spoofs the MAC address of my router so all the traffic gets sent to the spoofed MAC instead of the router. If anybody can help, it would be GREATLY appreciated. [link] [comments] |

6Ghz mesh or Tri-band 5ghz in an apartment? Posted: 19 Sep 2021 06:53 PM PDT What's better in an apartment, 6ghz wifi mesh or dedicated 5ghz? I live in a crowded city apartment complex, with multiple 160Mhz 5ghz router competing on the low 5ghz spectrum, and then a bunch competing on an 80Mhz band at the end spectrum. All the DFS bands in between seem to be clear, I assume because radar makes it impossible to use. I currently have an Asus RT-89X, mostly because it had dual >gigabit ports on it, which was rare for a wifi router, to have >gigabit wan plus >gigabit LAN. It has "8x8 802.11ax" 5ghz, which turns out to be just some MU-MIMO variant. Seems cool if it can multiplex 80Mhz bandwidth to many devices with beamforming, but I also have groupings of devices I prefer to hardwire without running cables across the floor. My options seem to be either the Zenwifi ET8 or XT8. I've seen posts saying it's better to use the XT8 for it's dual 5ghz bands for dedicated backhaul, but given my main router doesn't have a dedicated backhaul, I'll likely have to hardware at least one anyway. In that case, it seems better to use the ET8 and get the completely uncrowded 6ghz band and be able to enjoy a full 160Mhz link between the two mesh devices. I assume even if it has trouble penetrating walls and doors and range is limited, it's got to be better than competing against the crowded 5ghz spectrum and adding even more competition there. Ultimately, I just want to replace a NAT'd Google Nest Wifi network that's causing issues. I use the Google Wifi units as extender to hardware my media center and my lab so every decide doesn't need to be a wifi client. The NAT'd Google Nest Wifi causes severe issues for the Asus router though, and eventually makes it run out of memory, plus the IP / port forwarding issues are annoying. As of late, the Google Nest Wifi performance has dipped too. [link] [comments] |

Best way to setup a home network with mix of routers (Asus CT8s and Nighthawk) and ethernet? Posted: 19 Sep 2021 06:22 PM PDT I just moved into a new house and decided to upgrade my old Netgear Nighthawk to 2 Asus CT8 Zenwifis. I noticed in the basement is a junction/switch box (sorry I don't know the right terms) with coaxial cables and ethernet wires. After a lot of trial and error I figured the "feed" for the cable modem. For now I have the cable modem wired to the CT8 and all the ethernet ports plugged into the CT8. The second CT8 node is upstairs in the office connected by ethernet backhaul. Ideally I would want both of the CT8s upstairs on the first floor and second floor (basement is unfinished and just storage). I could set the Nighthawk as the router and the CT8s as nodes upstairs, but I feel like that's kind of silly since Nighthawk seems so dated. Or should I forget the backhaul and link the cable modem to ethernet to the office CT8 and just create a mesh with first and second floor? Another option was hook the feed to a splitter to the office coax and move the modem to the office, connect it to the CT8, then wire it to the basement box to a switch that connects to the other rooms for ethernet backhaul upstairs. My last question is when I setup a ethernet backhaul, do I need to disable Asus Smartconnect in Wireless setting and set band to "5ghz-2"? This is what their FAQ said and my SSID is just a string of characters. Not sure if this is correct. [link] [comments] |

Dual ethernet from ISP modem/router Posted: 19 Sep 2021 05:55 PM PDT Hi everyone, Quick question that has come up before I start my network overhaul (next week). My ISP modem/router has two ethernet ports and I will be using it as only a modem and using a TP-Link ER605 for routing. I'm wondering if I could plug both Ethernet cables in from the modem and aggregate them. Thoughts? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Moca isnt working due to weird wiring Posted: 19 Sep 2021 05:15 PM PDT im in on the second floor of a 2 family home and the main coaxial wiring for the modem is in the living room. this is the only port that the modem works in. How would I go about getting the rooms on to the same line as the main line with splitter so I can use a moca adapter in my room and leave the modem/router+adapter in the living room.I dont know where the line originates in order for me to even attempt to start since everything is behind walls. If one laptop has good wifi speeds but another has bad speeds is the wifi card failing? Posted: 19 Sep 2021 12:27 PM PDT The one directly near the router has A scores on dsl reports. But the one I use which was always been a few yards away and worked pretty well has really been lagging hard the last 2 weeks. It makes gaming and browsing a chore and I am wondering if thats an obvious sign of failing wifi card. ASUS laptop around 6 years old. [link] [comments] |
R610 reports not enough power. Posted: 19 Sep 2021 04:06 PM PDT I bought two used Ruckus r610s. I bought a TP-Link TL-SG1005P switch which does 802.3af/at. I also bought TP-LINK TL-PoE160S | 802.3at/af Gigabit PoE Injector and have tried multiple Ethernet cables. Am I missing something? It feels like these access points should be performing better. Home setup something like a school network?! Posted: 19 Sep 2021 04:01 PM PDT Hello all, I hope you're well! My partner has just bought a new home and we're undertaking a shed load of renovation work! Long story short, I'm building a cat6 network into every room. My question is this. How would I go about setting up a high powered central machine which I can load my DVD library and all my streaming services etc and then have a small, low power diskless machine in each room connected to each monitor/TV so that I can essentially "log in" and boot into the main machine from anywhere in the house over the network, similar to how a school would be set up? I hope my question makes sense, I struggle getting my thoughts down in writing! Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |

Dual WAN guidance. TP-LINK TL-WR740N V4 running dd wrt v3.0 r47381 Posted: 19 Sep 2021 03:25 PM PDT Hi guys, first post here. Please do forgive me for any mistakes. I'm looking for a way to 1 Install dual WAN setup on my router. I have tinkered with the settings as guided on here: https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=1198757#1198757 To great effect on speed and latency, but im not at ease with running scripts/commands to run dual WAN, as mentioned here: https://wiki.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Dual_WAN_with_failover 2 I have 2 modems at home, different packages and same ISP. Im looking for the possibility to connect both of those modems to my router to enhance network speed. The answer to the next question is that where i am, costs increase exponentially when say upgrading 50 Mbps to 100 Mbps (five fold to be precise). The current workaround is that half of my family is using 1 modem, other half the other one. Im working from home, and during meetings, I am facing issues due to ISP throttling, hence the lookaround for the (ideal) possibility of dual active WAN, with router being able to manage the load between them. Is this possible at all? Any solution? Even dual WAN, 1 active, 1 standby with auto or manual switching ability will (im hoping) help. Lastly, if it is not possible to run this without commands, kindly just guide me with a little more detail, and i'll be able to do it. Im a bit of a novice with good computer literacy, not that good network literacy. Also worth mentioning is that ISP throttling and deep packet inspection is present where I live, so I can not even use VPN to bypass the throttling (previously possible with Nord) I have posted the same issue in dd wrt sub, but after seeing the response rates there, i decided to post on here too. If you made it this far, thanks! [link] [comments] |
If you combine two sets of powerline ethernet adapters, will they work? Posted: 19 Sep 2021 03:06 PM PDT I bought this (NETGEAR PowerLine AV2 1200Mbps Adapter Kit) for working from home, it works great but my issue is that it only came with two plugs: one to receive internet, one to provide. My partner and I are both working from home, and I'd love to have us both set up on this system. If I buy a second pair of these guys, and plug another one somewhere else in the house, will it work?
