[USA] $2500+ Laptop that has all the upsides and barely any downsides. Help this indecisive buyer finally get a laptop.

    Posted: 19 Sep 2021 06:24 PM PDT

    • Total budget (In local currency) and country of purchase: $2500+ (if necessary)

    • Are you open to refurbs/used? No

    • How would you prioritize form factor, build quality, performance, and battery life? Performance > Battery Life > Quality > Form Factor

The first three are kinda a tie since I want the best in each but I know it's next to impossible for that m.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15+

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Programming (IDEs) and I might do some gaming so I don't wanna be locked out of it if I can. Ive been trying to start PC gaming for years but I don't have room in my house for a desktop so maybe I'll start with this.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Idk.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Touch screen if possible, upgrade-friendly

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm very indecisive. I've been trying to buy a laptop for almost 2 years but I always find something that makes me hate the current laptop I'm looking at (it's not upgradeable, screen too dim, thermals are shit, warranty on it sucks). If I need to increase my budget even more, tell me and I'll adjust accordingly. I was the best I can get that is great to use and last a long time.

[Malaysia] RM5000, laptop for university, with decent gaming power

    Posted: 20 Sep 2021 04:04 AM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
RM5000 (equals $1250) is the absolute maximum, so if there's something closer to RM4000 it might be better.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance and battery life are top priority, with performance coming first. I don't care about form factor, and for build quality something decent is enough.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
I'll be using it for university, so I want to avoid heavy and thick laptops, but it doesn't have to be extremely light/thin.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
14" would be the ideal option, but I can take 15.6".
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I play videogames. (See the following question.)
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I mainly want to play Elden Ring at least on 50fps with high-medium quality, but the game still hasn't released, so I'm not really sure what to say, but out of my current games, Sekiro is probably the heaviest one probably, so I'd like to be able to play it 60fps with high quality.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      Decent keyboard, decent build quality.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
My current laptop has i7-7700HQ @ 2.80GHz, GTX 1050 Ti 4GB, and 16GB RAM, so I'd like something at least with the same power.

Should I return my Lenovo ThinkPad W541?

    Posted: 20 Sep 2021 01:56 AM PDT

I recently started university and since I needed a more functional laptop, I bought a Lenovo ThinkPad W541 for 500€. However, now I´m running into some trouble since I´m studying chemistry and biology, seeing as I´m not able to add certain drawings from the blackboard to my notes. I´ve looked into a few drawing tablets so I may be able to at least jot down some things into notes, but so far I´ve only heard that most drawing tablets aren´t really compatible with Windows 10.

This is where I would like to ask my question. would it be more sensible to return my ThinkPad and buy a laptop with a touchscreen or should I keep looking into graphic tablets? And could you recommend me any models for either solution?

    Thank you in advance!

Is this a good laptop for computer science?

    Posted: 20 Sep 2021 01:03 AM PDT

I know barely anything about laptops/computers so I would really appreciate anyone helping me out. I've been looking at a few laptops recently for university where I'm doing computer science and I'm on a budget of £600, and this one I found (https://www.hp.com/gb-en/shop/product.aspx?id=30A26EA&opt=ABU&sel=NTB&lang=en-GB&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIpe7ek5-M8wIVBp53Ch1ynwszEAQYASABEgLAWDBwE&gclsrc=aw.ds) recently dropped to £500, but I can get it to £450 with student discount. Is this a good enough laptop for computer science, and is there anything that could be a big issue?

Work and hobby laptop. Workstation vs Gaming?

    Posted: 20 Sep 2021 12:53 AM PDT

I'm trying to find a good laptop that will fill my needs.

The primary use for my laptop is split between working (dev/devops work) and hobby stuff, gaming and video editing.

I don't care too much about the screen since I almost always will have it connected to my two external monitors (a good docking station would also be appreciated).

I want to be able to play games on it, it doesn't have to be able to do 4k@100fps. But if it can handle newer games at 2k that would be a great minimum.

At least 16GB of RAM, but prefer 32GB since I like playing around with VMs and other things when working.

I want a good looking laptop, I'm not a fan of those flashy gaming laptop things. The Razer Blade is really clean looking imo and similar styling is quite important to me.

    Summarized reqs:

    • 16GB RAM (prefer 32GB)
    • Able to run games at 2k at least
    • USB-C docking station support for multiple monitors
    • 1TB SSD storage
    • "Clean" look (Razer Blade/Lenovo P series)
    • Would be good if it's possible to upgrade things in the future
    • The smaller the better (hate those huge 17'' laptops, 13'' is fine)

I'm willing to spend around $3k on something that fits all my requirements.

Looking for a laptop for gaming, streaming, and work

    Posted: 19 Sep 2021 03:20 PM PDT

I posted not long ago for a laptop and had to reevaluate my needs and cost, so I needed to increase my budget. Planned on building a new pc,but that plan may be further into the future, may as well get a decent laptop now. Though, I am a simpleton to current hardware knowledge and what is deemed good as my last build had a gtx760, but lasted me until recently.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Budget is flexible $700-$1000 USD to possibly $1200

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

Not really but can be convinced

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

      Build quality and performance

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not important

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      14 minimum to 17

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Final Fantasy online and a backlog of older steam games (Fallout 4, Witcher 3, etc.). Looking to get Red Dead 2 and Outer Worlds.

I tend to have an excess number of tabs open for work.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

High and at least above 60

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    None come to mind

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I've got some Amazon gift card to use and I have access to go to Costco, Samsclub, and two Microcenters in the Chicago area.

I've seen other posts mentioning of adding a m.2 ssd for more storage and ram, so having that option would be good.

Laptop that can handle multitasking for under US $1000

    Posted: 19 Sep 2021 03:11 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Up to US$1000, in the USA
Might go a bit over for the right machine

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

Maybe, if the laptop will be qualified to be warrantied by SquareTrade (which is now AllState?) or other quality 3rd party extended warranty program.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance is the most important. Good CPU and at least 16G memory. Although they conflict, lighter weight and strong case [I break everything] is next.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Would prefer something 5 lbs or under, but am not tied to this.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    15"

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Some gaming, but nothing super special.

What I specifically need is something capable of running multiple browsers and each running multiple windows under multiple identities with too many tabs. Don't judge; it's what works for me for my jobs. My current laptop (Macbook Pro) does it with ease, but now I need a Windows10 machine to be able to do the same.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Most of the games I like (eg. RCT3) are older and clunkier, but I do play a few more modern games [eg. Planet Coaster]. I don't need a super gaming computer, unless it's the right choice for what I need to get my work done.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

A sturdy keyboard, preferably backlit, and USB ports are required; I use external mice. A fingerprint reader would be great. An optical drive would be nice but not necessary, as it's unlikely.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I do not like Acer as a brand. My last two Windows laptops were Asus [a good machine] and a Lenovo with a bad hinge that needed to be replaced every 6 months.

    My current machine is a 15" 2017 MacBookPro with 16G memory & a 2.8GHz Intel Core i7 processor.

Right now, on the MBP, I'm running two Firefox windows with multiple tabs, two Chrome windows under two different identities, two windows of a third browser, an Android emulator, Steam, and a few other smaller programs/apps. The machine doesn't break a sweat unless I start playing an intensive game or otherwise make a graphics demand. (By comparison, my 2016 Asus W10 box can run two browsers with complaints and nothing else can run with them. No gaming with any other program running.)

I need a Windows 10 laptop that can do the same. Is this possible for $1000?

College student needs a laptop suggestion. She likes casual gaming (some AAA steam games)

< $1000 (USD) (Purchasing in USA). A little over $1000 with taxes is ok.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance > battery life > Build quality.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Light weight. < 4 lbs would be nice.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    >= 15.6 in

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Adobe Creative Cloud & Adobe Suite for Students

    Maya Gaming Design Software

Video editing & Graphic design heavy

Be able to play some AAA Steam games (casual gaming, not a gaming first laptop. This is education first, casual gaming)

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

some AAA steam games, GTA 5 @ 60 FPS would be great.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Many ports (too hook up external keyboard, monitor). Bluetooth, touchscreen (good but not necessary). Backlit keyboard would be nice.

    Best Laptop for College?

    Posted: 19 Sep 2021 09:31 PM PDT

Looking for a laptop that is speedy, will last for years to come, and is under $900 with accidental protection. Something that will work well for school and Zoom meetings!

I was looking into a custom built HP Envy 13, is that a good idea?

    If not, any better ideas?

    Thank you all in advance!

    Business Laptop

    Posted: 19 Sep 2021 08:43 PM PDT

Hi, I'm looking to make my first laptop purchase for my business, I'll try my best to outline my needs, please forgive me if I forget anything pertinent. I know very little about computers and there's just SO MANY options and it's honestly hard to choose (This is coming from a guy who regularly asks the waitress to decide between 2-3 of the meals I want)

I'll be running plenty of chrome tabs, listening to music, utilizing a software called OAxray that sometimes creates 20+ tabs, Discord, no gaming, voice chatting and occasionally video chatting.

    Price Range: $1k-$1.3k
    Preferred Band: Lenovo
    Upgradeability preferred, Durability preferred
2 in 1 preferred but not necessary
    Screen size: 15" minimum
    Ryzen Preferred
The number pad on right side of keyboard = Required
    16gb Ram Minimum
    512GB storage

    Thanks in advanced guys!
