Microsoft's desktop compositor still has not surpassed the performance of Aero in the Vista/7 era... Posted: 28 Sep 2021 03:11 PM PDT ...and it's frustrating. I still remember the first time I saw an accelerated desktop compositor. It was in 2001, on a Power Mac G4 demo unit at CompUSA. I was mesmerized by the genie effect for minimize/maximize, the expanding/shrinking dock, and the ability to move windows around while redrawing the window contents (even video). In retrospect, the FPS of these effects fell short of the display's refresh rate and are nowhere near the levels of performance on a modern-day Mac. Flash-forward to 2006 and I was entrenched in FOSS culture. I had a fairly slow Athlon XP 2000 with 1 GB RAM, a GeForce 5200 GPU, and other budget parts from that era. Back then, a thing called Compiz/Beryl was all the rage. We had incredibly fast desktop effects that easily surpassed what could be found on a Mac. Finally, Microsoft threw their hat in the ring with Aero, and it was kinda meh... but there was real promise there. Flash-forward to today - Why can't Windows Explorer give a consistent 60hz experience on ANY modern device? My Surface Pro 6, my Go 2 (Win 11), and even my Surface Book 3 (Win 11) have only a fraction of the display chops of Android, iOS and Mac OS, and these are all expensive pieces of kit. It would be easy to blame Intel because aside from 11th-gen EVO stuff, they are far behind the curve in terms of graphics, but if I install Linux on even my Surface Pro 1, the performance is outstanding and that's an 8-year-old system! How can Microsoft expect to be able to compete in the consumer tablet space with this abysmal level of performance? [link] [comments]

Who misses Windows Media Player and Media Center? Posted: 28 Sep 2021 01:07 PM PDT Honestly I don't understand why Media Player has been split into two apps in Windows 10, and discontinued Media Center. [link] [comments]

quick question about widows desktop Posted: 28 Sep 2021 04:57 PM PDT hello i was just wondering if there is a program out there or a widows feature already inside my widows 10 OS where you see your desktop as it is now, with all the folders and program icons and how you can move the icons around freely or within a grid pattern right? my question is what if you have that desktop view feature WITHIN a folder rather than the eight view options (xtra large icons, small icons, tiles, large icons, list, content, medium icons, details) I'm not a tech guy i just think it would be awesome feature to organize files that way right? thanks [link] [comments]

Sometimes my mouse wheel scrolls the page faster than I want it and idk how to stop it Posted: 28 Sep 2021 02:56 PM PDT I'm not sure how to properly word it, but sometimes (and always randomly) the page scrolls faster than I want it to scroll, but after a moment it goes back to normal. Thing is that I don't want this to continue happening. It has nothing to do with my mouse settings either, and I can't find anything online about this issue. [link] [comments]
Posted: 28 Sep 2021 02:00 PM PDT Hi, I have a few questions about the upgrade (sorry if bad formatting, I'm on a phone) When will it be available? Will it be available on the 5th? If so, what time? I get past the requirements easily, will that affect the time I get it? Is there a launch event? Is there a stream where it will launch? Is it just a regular Windows feature update in Settings?[link] [comments]

Posted: 28 Sep 2021 04:20 AM PDT I'm a tester working for a team building software for Windows. Today the version of the software I installed last week just randomly stopped working. If I launched from command prompt, or via a shortcut I got a dialog that the procedure entry point from a QT dll could not be located. If I launched from Windows Terminal it does work. After spending ages trying to figure out why they would be different, including ensuring I had 100% the same environment and my terminal session wasn't contaiminating something I noticed I had a pending Windows Update. Did that, and it all works okay again. So my question is, how does a pending windows update break installed software? I swear sometimes it feels like MacBeth's three witches are now employed at Microsoft and this is all dark magic. [link] [comments]
Posted: 28 Sep 2021 09:06 AM PDT Anyone have like a usb bootable version of it? I've tried all the ways it says to change it into one but in the end it doesn't see the usb as a bootable thing. [link] [comments]
Posted: 28 Sep 2021 10:30 AM PDT Hey yall, i have a Pentium G4600 mobo and read in an online article that this will not be compatible for the new upcoming windows 11 update. I looked up and compared some pentium ones that is compatible for the update and my G4600 is significantly better than most of the pentiums that were listed. I am confused as to why windows wouldn't allow a fast processor like mine to operate and have the latest windows 11? any thoughts about it? not really much of a PC guy myself. open for and would appreciate feedback. Ryzen 3 support for Windows 11 Posted: 28 Sep 2021 08:09 AM PDT I have Ryzen 3 1300X with Prime A320M-K. Today I found out that I can enable TPM 2.0. I enabled it. Tried the windows pc health app. And it said that I can't run windows 11. Now my question is will I be able to install Windows 11 without formatting? [link] [comments]
Posted: 28 Sep 2021 02:14 AM PDT I really don't mind the start menu, but one of the first things I did was to turn off the "Recommended" section. Nothing against the idea, but it kept showing some... sensitive content. Now, half my start menu is just wasted space :( [link] [comments]
