Finally made Amazon Prime to stream in HD in Linux!

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 09:40 AM PDT

I installed wine-staging, wine-mono, wine-gecko in my Arch Linux. I had to enable multilib in /etc/pacman.conf then I downloaded google chrome for pc(.Exe) and installed it using wine.

And some 32 bit libs for audio! And Prime Video works in HD!

Could those PCs run Fedora 34? if not, which distro would you install?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 01:24 AM PDT

    Hi

I've recently entered in the world of linux by installing Fedora 34 in dual boot on my main windows 11 pc. Since it runs better, i was wondering if i could install it on another two, older and slower PCs, on which Windows 10 runs slowly. But before, i wanted to ask if you think those two could run smoothly it, or if it's better to install a lighter version of linux.

Those are the two lists of specs:

    PC 1

    • Original OS: Windows 8
    • x64 System
    • Processor: AMD E1-1200 APU with Radeon HD Graphics (1,40 GHz)
    • RAM: 4GB
    • 256 GB SSD

    PC 2

    • Original OS: Windows 10
    • x64 System
    • Processor: AMD A9-9420 Radeon R5, 5 Compute Cores 2C+3G (3.00 GHz)
    • RAM: 8 GB
    • 1 TB HDD

    P.S.

    Those are both laptops

    Easy Lightroom Alternative

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 10:28 AM PDT

    Hello everyone,

Hope you're doing great. I recently switched to Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. Now, I need a good and easy alternative to Lightroom. I tried Darkroom and Rawtherapee; however, I found it overwhelming (a tad bit).

So, any suggestion will be helpful.

New User- Fedora 34/Gnome 40 Troubleshooting

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 08:53 AM PDT

I just installed Fedora 34/Gnome 40 on my laptop yesterday. It's my first time using Linux. My ISO was from about 6-8 weeks ago, and I did all the recommended updates after installing.

I've had a few minor issues so far.

    Here is my Machine:

    Lenovo Ideapad 130-15AST Laptop

    • AMD A9 (2 core, 3.1-3.7 GHz)
    • Radeon 5 graphics
    • 4GB RAM

I am dual booting with Windows 10 on a 30GB SSD partition.

    My issues:

    1. Sometimes when my computer falls asleep, it won't wake up. The screen is on, but black and unresponsive. I have to force shut down with the power button to get it up and running again.
    2. The three-finger gestures aren't working on Gnome. Two-finger scrolling works just fine.
    3. When I tried installing two programs (Pomodoro, and GnuCash), at the end of the install it said there was a quick message saying there was an error in a component or something like that. Pomodoro doesn't work at all (I realize it hasn't been updated for Fedora 34 which might be the issue) but GnuCash seems to be okay-though I haven't used it extensively yet.
    4. When I restart the computer, it seems both versions of Fedora I have are on the boot menu. How do I delete the old version?

    TIA

CPU Scheduling - Need a bit of clarification

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 10:25 AM PDT

Hi all, I've been using Linux for a few months now and consider myself fairly competent, but I need some clarification when it comes to CPU scheduling.

Essentially, I installed Manjaro KDE a couple months ago and have mostly been really liking it, except for one issue; gaming performance. I've had really mixed luck with stuttering and low FPS in games my PC could handle easily on Windows 10. Until today I thought I was just gonna have to endlessly fiddle with Winetricks and custom Proton versions, until I found a tip about changing my CPU governor to Performance instead of Power saving (using cpupower and cpupower-gui).

So, my major concern is this; will setting my default cpupower profile to Performance (to be enabled at boot) cause damage to my CPU? Or am I better off manually enabling Performance mode when I launch a game. In the GUI, when enabling the Performance profile, it shows each core as running near it's max clock (4.0 ghz) on idle, whereas before, they were much closer to their minumum (800 mhz).

My only experience with this type of thing was setting my Windows 10 power usage preference to "Prefer Maximum Performance", and I rarely ever dealt with CPU clocks/overclocking/boosts.

If anyone could help me out with this, it'd be much appreciated, as I'd like to make sure I'm keeping my CPU healthy while also utilizing it fully.

I'm trying to start a minecraft server in Ubuntu Server Edition. I can start the server with an sh script that just runs the jar file that starts the server. I want to set it up so this script gets run whenever the machine turns on. Also, is it possible to have scripts run as the machine turns off?

I'm looking for an alternative for PowerToysFancyZones utility (Windows), where I can define a grid layout where app windows could be placed, to keep things organized.

Currently, I'm using the latest Ubuntu LTS (20.04) and I hope that there is a reliable app for this.

NVIDIA X Server changes are reset on each reboot.

    Posted: 01 Aug 2021 11:47 PM PDT

EDIT: I found the solution! I needed to save the config in /etc/X11/mhwd.d/nvidia.conf instead of the default location it was saving in. I've tried rebooting and the changes were saved!

I've just installed Manjaro in a dual boot with Windows and everything seems to be working great, however I'm unable to change the settings inside of NVIDIA X Server Settings.

I want to set a different monitor as the primary display, however whenever I reboot after making the change, the settings are reset to where they were. I was able to make some changes and they were saved a bit ago, but now nothing seems to be saved.

I tried running it as root from the terminal, saving to X Configuration File, I also tried following some guides, none of which worked

When running it from the terminal I'm also getting these messages in it:

    GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: 12:40:19.332: g_object_unref: assertion 'G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed sh: line 1: pkg-config: command not found sh: line 1: pkg-config: command not found

Whenever I click browse in the X Configuration File saving menu, the terminal gets spammed with these messages for a second:

dconf-WARNING **: 12:45:33.806: failed to commit changes to dconf: Error spawning command line "dbus-launch --autolaunch=3fb9b4c6b14342b39faa88544bab57f6 --binary-syntax --close-stderr": Child process exited with code 1

Is there any solution for this problem?

Is upgrading from Mint Ubuntu 18.04 worth going to 20.04?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 01:38 PM PDT

So my buddy got a laptop, and long story short before he got it someone who "fixed" the computer, couldn't get windows 10 back on it, so installed Linux. I am a windows 10 user, but I can get around on Linux and do basic commands. Trying to help a friend out so we can make music remotely using reaper. The computer is a hp stream 14 with 4gb ram, dual core processor. Would upgrading his computer help the experience out for him? So far its getting the job done, just want it to run smoother.

Between Ubuntu, Linux mint and Manjaro, which one should I use?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 12:49 PM PDT

I'll install it on a usb stick and use it daily, mostly for programming (I also wanna try shell scripting) but also for normal stuff like browsing the web. I want to have a clean good-looking desktop (I think all of those have that). The only experience I had with linux is I tried Manjaro and a very old version of Ubuntu a few days ago. Edit: forgot to mention that I also want a quite customizable one

A few problems that is hindering me using Linux more often.

Hi, I recently decided to download Linux and decided to go for Manjaro (gnome) and I like it so far but im having a few problems that is hindering me from using Linux more often. I have a speaker setup and a pair of headphones connected to my pc. The headphones are connected to the back IO and the speakers are connected up top in the headphone jack and for some reason Linux can't find the headphones I have plugged in they don't show up at all.

And the second thing im having a hard time with is connecting my Xbox series x controller with a wireless usb stick connected to my pc. Im really not sure on how to get it to work.

Pop Os frozen/stuck on login screen

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 06:48 AM PDT

Well, yesterday I changed some configs in Nvidia X server, then I shutdown my laptop and went to sleep. Today I turned it on, and then it was stuck in a black screen with a froze underline, so I just assumed that was XServer, and reinstalled it, this didn't resolve the problem, I purged Nvidia and dowgraded it from 470 to 465, nothing happened, I used a installation disc and messed with some Xorg files, and then, it showed the lightdm screen, but it was stuck on it (mouse and keyboard were not responding, but textbox cursor was blinking), so I tried to uninstall lightdm and installed sddm, but still stuck in the login screen manager (sddm now). My cursor shows up, but I can't move it, my keyboard doesn't work too. I have kde plasma installed in Pop OS, Gnome is installed too ofc, so I could change it whenever I wanted. IDK if the system is frozen tbh, since the textbox cursor blinks, and the screen faded out after a short time. Sorry If something sounds wrong, I'm not a native speaker.

Additional Info: My laptop is a Acer Aspire 5 (I don't remember the exact model) GPU: Nvidia Geforce 940MX CPU: Intel Core i5 - 7200U OS: Pop Os 21.04

post installation problems with pop os 21.04. How to configure ufw?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 12:35 PM PDT

I want to learn to configure ufw properly without any hacks to get it to work. It should just work as advertised by using the commands in ufw.

Before I used 20.04 without any problems. Then I tried out kubuntu but didn't like it, so when I installed pop os 21.04 I begin by enabling the firewall.

I hear some people saying you should start buy doing apt update and upgrade, but isn't that insecure? Someone could get into your computer when your firewall is down. There are hackers who are probing all IP constantly on automatic loop.

    I begin by writing:

sudo ufw enable sudo ufw default deny incoming sudo ufw default deny outgoing sudo ufw allow out 443/tcp sudo ufw allow out 53/tcp sudo ufw reload

53 is supposed to be for dns I've read. And 443 for https. I don't know if there's any point in allowing http because it's insecure. I never go to a website which doesn't have https.

Then I tried running firefox but nothing was happening. So I tried to again, then after maybe 10-15 seconds I tried again. After maybe 10 more seconds all 3 firefox windows appeared (not at the same time though).

I also noticed that the terminal and shell commands are lagging now. I have to wait about 10 seconds before a command like "sudo ufw status verbose" outputs to console. Restarting terminal or computer doesn't fix it.

I then found out about the /etc/services file and started by resetting ufw. Then I did

sudo ufw allow out https sudo ufw allow out http sudo ufw allow out ssh sudo ufw allow out mdns sudo ufw allow out domain-s

I also did all those commands for incoming as well. At this point I have no idea if I'm possibly allowing more connections than I have need of. Maybe I don't need to allow both in and out for these ports. But anyway it still doesn't work even after a making sure ufw is enabled and reloaded.

I can't do apt update, can't browse to a website, and shell commands and opening browser is slow. Btw, I am properly connected to my wifi.

Creating SSH sudo user with single app access. Is it safe?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2021 05:10 PM PDT

I want to create an SSH user that only has access to one app. As soon as the user connects, it runs that command. As soon as the user tries to end the app, the connection is closed. This is the process I am following.

    # Replace: username, password & docker service name with actual values. # Create a new Linux user sudo adduser <username> --password <password> # Add user to sudo group. (Not optimal but required for Docker) sudo usermod -aG sudo <username> nano /etc/ssh/sshd_config # Add this to the end of the file. Match User <username> AllowTcpForwarding yes X11Forwarding no AllowAgentForwarding no ForceCommand echo "<password>" | sudo -S -k docker logs --follow <docker service name> sudo systemctl restart sshd

My issue is with this line sudo usermod -aG sudo <username>. Per this askubuntu link it should be possible to just do this sudo usermod -aG docker <username>. However, it does not work. It only works when the user is given sudo access.

Now, I am asking myself, is this is a problem? Docker seems to require sudo & that user is a superuser. But I've tried every which way that I know of & can't seem to do anything harmful with it. Does anyone know if this is a safe practice?

As a side note, but even though it is a superuser, I was not able to get ForceCommand to work unless I specifically called it with sudo & fed the password inline. Alternatives are welcome! :-p

    How to adjust my touchpad?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 01:26 AM PDT

Edit: I'll install a different Linux distro, Fedora seems like a pain with proprietary drivers. No need to answer!

When I first used Windows on my computer, my touchpad had some horrible settings, and if I remember correctly, I found some Synaptics thingy in Registry and tweaked the settings there.

I installed Linux (Fedora) the other day for my upcoming CS classes, I haven't used terminals before that and I'm only getting used to the GUI. I'm meganoob, basically. My touchpad has several settings I dislike, like a short cooldown when using the keyboard and a high sensitivity to small movements.

I tried to look for advice on the internet, but the advice and commands don't seem to work? I'm too noob to understand what should work for me and I don't want to wait to become intermediate before I can adjust my touchpad.

How do I display non english characters while keeping my machine locale english - Arch

    Posted: 01 Aug 2021 03:45 PM PDT

I want my 'default' locale to continue to be 'en_US.utf8' but I want my machine to support other languages as far as reading in programs like chrome. For example when I go to the learn Korean subreddit I am getting the empty box character anywhere someone is using korean but I want to see the characters.

Can someone point me to what I even need to search for this? I keep getting Locale setup wikis/guides but it all seems geared to changing my entire machine to another language instead of just supporting multiple languages for a single user.

A friend of mine thinks I'm some sort of computer genius when really I'm just a guy who likes to tinker with computers in his free time. He sent me an Acer Aspire One, a really old netbook? laptop? idk and he asked me to change the OS from Bodih Linux? (i forgot the name, all I remember it had linux in it) to Windows 7. So me being the good friend I am, accepted it, when I tried using a bootable usb to install windows 7, it said that it can't install it bcuz the hdd is NTFS and then I searched up online on how to format it, it said that I need to use a terminal to format it. Then I followed the instructions and saw that i needed a password for sudo? but I don't know the password. Pls help, and fyi im dumb sometimes so pls be patient with me.
