Posted: 29 Aug 2021 09:06 AM PDT I spent a week trying to get either Pop!_OS, Zorin Pro, or Manjaro KDE to work on my computer. By the end of last week I was frustrated to the point of giving up and was going to reinstall windows, but decided to try Fedora as a last resort; it worked perfectly out of the box. I was concerned because Fedora did not have NVIDIA drivers installed out of the box, but with a little research I found an autoinstaller for those drivers, and everything works perfectly. Take a look at the detailed instructions through copr here: Fedora NVIDIA AutoInstaller One thing that really surprised me (which I really like) is the drive management on Fedora. I have two hard drives on my computer; a 500GB SSD and a 1TB HDD. I have always had to manage those hard drives as separate drives (C: Drive and D: Drive). Fedora combines both of them (somehow I don't know how) during the installation, so now I have one 1.5TB drive to manage. Plus it is easy to enable LUKS on both drives which with other distros I have seen requires a lot of CLI work to enable. I have played with Fedora in the past in VM's and always thought it was a good looking distro, but never thought about using it as my daily driver because I wasn't comfortable with RPM and dnf package management. After playing around with the Fedora repositories it is no different than deb and apt, just some different commands which is easy enough to look up. In short, don't overlook Fedora, it really surprised me after all of those other distros wouldn't work properly for me. With a little bit of work it allowed me to finally make the switch to Linux. Posted: 29 Aug 2021 08:30 AM PDT As the title says. I followed instruction on yt. Via Rufus I opened ubuntu ISO onto my USB stick. Then restated laptop and installed ubuntu whilst simultaneously deleting win 10. It seemed all fine, instalation ended and I clicked onto restart now and I only get black screen now with 'no bootable device detected' Any advice please? Edit: so I just reinstalled it. Now it finished and asked my to restart my laptop. Its going now repeating error for what it seems like forever' Nnn.nnnn SQUASHFS error: unable to read clock date ..........,....... ( Dont know because it moves so quickly) 1000c' and the nn's stand for number, it keeps increasing Edit2: reinstalled it successfully from the same Usb stick. It seemed all great working fine, downloading updates, surfing web. Then after a system update I went to restart it, and now it wont boot up. Again says 'kernel could not boot' [link] [comments] |
Should I convert the default bash scripts to fish? Posted: 29 Aug 2021 10:01 AM PDT I recently switched to fish (I'm coming from bash) and the ArchWiki is telling me I should convert some default bash configs to fish. I haven't actually bothered modifying them and Arch still seems to boot fine even without converting the configs. Should I actually bother converting them or should I just leave them be? (I'm not very experienced with swapping shells so please be kind..) (Also, I am using arch in case it wasn't very obvious..) Edit: The scripts in particular are some of the Bash initialization scripts. Edit 2: I'm not exactly sure how to edit a title, but the scripts turn out to just be configs. Thanks to doc_willis for correcting! [link] [comments] |
No sound on 4k 60fps but works on 4k 30 fps. Posted: 29 Aug 2021 11:52 AM PDT Arch/Gnome/Wayland/Pipewire Sound works perfect at 4k 30fps but when changing to 60 fps I can't hear anything. Audio is playing as I can see movement on the volume bar in settings. The problem happens on pulseaudio also but not when using windows. [link] [comments] |

how to set the system language to english and the rest to my local configuration Posted: 29 Aug 2021 12:36 PM PDT I believe that the language is determined by $LANG and the rest of the variables are copied from $LANG Is it possible to change just the language without having to set the rest of the undetermined number of variables that copy the value from LANG? In other words, i want my machine to act like it is in my country but have menus and errors shown in english I tried all kind of combinations without success Thanks! [link] [comments] |
How to build QtScrcpy on Ubuntu? Posted: 29 Aug 2021 06:07 AM PDT I really need to use qtscrcpy as it supports keymapping, but on their website, all they say for linux is "build it by yourself" while providing no instructions on how to do it. Can anyone please show me how to do it? I'm really new to linux so I'll really appreciate your help. Need help with Ubuntu 20.04 audio problem Posted: 29 Aug 2021 03:56 AM PDT Linux noob here. I've been using Ubuntu 20.04 for the last few months on my old Dell Inspiron 3558 laptop and it's working like a charm. Recently I bought a new laptop, Dell Inspiron 3501, and gave the old one to my sister. It came pre-installed with Windows 10. So I dual-booted Ubuntu 20.04 on it to check if everything is working fine and later I wanted to remove Windows completely and install Ubuntu as my primary OS. After installation, everything is working fine except the audio output. The sound kind of crackles. It works perfectly fine on windows though. I tested inbuild speakers, Bluetooth headset, and output from 3.5 mm audio jack but no difference. I tried youtube videos and local audio and video files but the outcome is the same. I tried many online solutions but without any success. I also installed Ubuntu 21.04, to check if the new kernel brings any improvement but the condition was the same. So I installed Ubuntu 20.04 back since I'm more comfortable with the LTS version. I'm a front-end web developer and I feel comfortable with basic command line but I still consider myself a Linux newbie. But I love Linux and don't want to go back into Windows world. Please help me solve this problem. Hardware specs:

Bizarre Issue where Hard Drive appears multiple times Posted: 29 Aug 2021 10:22 AM PDT So, whenever I remount my hard drive, another folder appears in my /mnt/$USER/ folder. How can I setup dual boot so that the bootloaders wont mess up each other Posted: 29 Aug 2021 09:02 AM PDT So, to start off, I am getting new hardware, so I have 2 drives, a 250GB Nvme M2 SSD and a 120GB SATA SSD, I want to setup dual boot (Windows on the M2 SSD and Mint on the 120GB SATA SSD) Should I go the normal route and install Windows first, or is there anything else I wouldn't be always using this system, so I don't want the bootloader to mess up after every single Windows Update.. (Ubuntu 20.04) How can I get DoT working using systemd-resolve? Posted: 29 Aug 2021 08:57 AM PDT Tried setting systemd-resolve to use DoT, but can't get it to work. What I tried:
I also tried adding a port to the DNS setting (DNS=78.46.244.143:853#dot-de.blahdns.com), but that gives me an invalid argument error when checking the systemd-resolve service. Also tried changing DNSOverTLS to opportunistic, but didn't change anything. [link] [comments] |
