Install lightweight Linux distro onto old smartphone Posted: 28 Aug 2021 05:43 AM PDT I recently bought a Raspberry Pi 3A+ and I'm running it through a remote desktop connection to practice using the Linux command line and the OS in general. It seems to be really slow - lag when moving windows, takes time to open apps, text editor slow to respond, etc. I have an old Sony Xperia 10 which I don't use and I'm wondering if it might be worthwhile installing a lightweight Linux distro onto it to use that instead. Does anyone have any experience with this? Surely it would be much faster than the Pi? I managed to find a few walkthrough showing how to do it, I just wanted to check if it's worthwhile before going ahead with it. Thanks! [link] [comments] |

How do I properly launch desktop files using dmenu, utilizing gtk-launch? Posted: 28 Aug 2021 04:59 AM PDT OS: Artixlinux x86_64 with openrc Using i3-wm version 4.19.2. Hey. I have an application that I want to run using dmenu, specifically an .AppImage file, and I have somewhat succeded in that regard - I extracted a desktop file, put it in folder , then symlinked it to and I can launch it using dmenu. The problem is that whenever I try to launch it, it just opens the desktop file itself as text on my browser. Here is the file in question: I get the issue - the first line says to open the file with xdg-open and if I do that via terminal I get the same result as if I opened it with dmenu, that's so be expected. The application launches normally though if I open via the command and that's what I need help with. How do I launch the application using gtk-launch through dmenu? [link] [comments] |

Hard drive completely full - I cant login anymore Posted: 28 Aug 2021 09:10 AM PDT Hey dear linux-loving fellows, I installed Linux Mint months ago on my PC and it worked flawlessly till yesterday. The hard drive was quite full (cause its not that big) but there were several GB left. Yesterday came a warning that there was no byte left and the explorer said so too (on the bottom of the window). Seeing this I deleted (not just moved to the bin) several bigger files (one of them 7GB) but that didnt change the situation at all (it still said 0 bytes left). I thought maybe reboot it but then I couldn't log in anymore. So I booted into recovery mode, deleted some old header with the clean option and I could log in again. But the space of my disk was still not free (from the 12+GB deleted files). Then some process (not sure what but I think an update) again ran the disk full again and I thought ok then, same process again but this time i couldnt boot into the recovery mode again (doing exactly the same I did before when it worked). Today I tried to use a live-usb to delete some files "remotely" but even from the usb the space didnt show up as free space even though I deleted files. Now I dont know what to do. Is there any way I can get access to my files at least? A third problem I encountered was that I tried to move another 7 GB file to a USB (to free up even more space) but the process first slowed, then halted at about 50% and an error message said the file was too big. Is there something I can do about this too? So I'm left with these three questions:
I know this is a big mess and probably 100% noob stuff but I would be so grateful if someone could give me at least some tips to access my files which I need urgently. Thanks in advace for answers and have a nice day :D [link] [comments] |
How do I write a script that opens a terminal emulator instance upon execution? Posted: 28 Aug 2021 04:57 AM PDT I've decided to write my first ever bash script. It installs a network card driver that I use. It installed fine, but I missed seeing the exact progress in a terminal. Is there a way to write a script in a way that it displays the exact step and progress in a terminal just as if I punched in the commands myself? I executed it, and then just restarted when I felt like it's probably done building and installing the driver, which felt a bit weird. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 28 Aug 2021 11:33 AM PDT Hello all. Looking to create a multi bootable usb with ventoy. I have an old laptop that I'd like to keep windows on but also be able to try a few Linux distros. My main question is. Will my changes to the OS stick? So if I boot Linux lite from the usb will I be able to go back to it later with all my saved files etc ? I'd like to get used to Linux before fully committing and eliminating windows. I'd also like to be able to switch back and forth between windows and Linux if I need to. [link] [comments] |

I need help with partitioning. Dual booting. Posted: 28 Aug 2021 11:10 AM PDT So I want to install Kubuntu. I have an SSD with 240GB and an HDD with 1TB of space. I have already experienced installing Linux, but the confusing thing is about partition since I'm dual booting. I've searched about it, but there are different answers that's why I'm so confused. I want to install Kubuntu on my SSD. I'd give it at least 30GB of space. From Ubuntu's wiki, it says Ubuntu will use 2 partitions at a minimum. It didn't mention EFI partition. Does that mean I don't need to create a partition for that? It's one of the most confusing thing to me when installing Linux. I've seen answers where I don't have to do anything with the "Device for boot loader installation" since Ubuntu automatically chooses the EFI partition of Windows. And those answers were like 3-5 years ago so I don't know if that is still the case. Here's what I'm trying to do. 30GB of space will be used by root and swap. I don't have to create a /home partition since I have an extra 1TB HDD. I don't need an EFI partition since there's already an existing one. What do you guys think?
Edit: I have 8GB of RAM. Do I still need swap? My BIOS Mode is UEFI. [link] [comments] |
Help making a script to pull time from a webserver Posted: 28 Aug 2021 11:07 AM PDT I am attempting to pull the time from a webserver to update my system time regularly. This is what I have so far:
And it works perfectly. But now I want to ensure I have internet connectivity first (or else my time is set to 12:00:00) I was trying something like:
But I am receiving a parse error that I cannot figure out. Any suggestions or perhaps "prettier" ways of accomplishing this? Thanks for any pointers! EDIT: Thanks to the input and a little more research I have this code now: ``` ping -q -c 1 1.1.1.1 if [ $? -eq 0 ] then date -s "$(curl --head 1.1.1.1 | grep Date | cut -d' ' -f2-) exit 0 else echo "Failed" >&2 exit 2 fi ``` [link] [comments] |
Please Help me with my linux problem. Posted: 28 Aug 2021 10:54 AM PDT I have several computers on which I use POP OS. I like it a lot. But I have packet manager issues constantly when I try to do updates, and I have to reset a lot. Is there some kind of maintenance regiment or setup that I am overlooking? I have fixed it before but it seems like it always comes back. The following two issues may or may not be related to not being able to update properly. My 1 laptop which is an old macbookpro which has an i7 and 8gb of ram constantly will go up to maximum memory usage and freeze, or the internet will need to be turned off and on. I have to reset the entire computer basically every half hour when using it. Yes I have a lot of tabs open and when I close some it seems to go down but it is an issue regardless. I like to keep tabs open in my browser so that I remind myself about things I need to do when I see them. All my other reminders and to do lists are too diluted but if there is an app someone could recommend I could try that. I did manually install the wifi card driver when I first booted it so that may be related to the wifi which stops working. My main computer which is a desktop usually works pretty good. I set up file sharing on it so I can put all my important files on that one but it doesn't connect anymore. I cannot access the shared folder from either computer it loads a long time and gives me an error. If anyone can offer a more user friendly computer setup I would appreciate it. I can backup my files to hard drives and start from scratch on better linux distros if necessary. Thinking maybe a lightweight version or thin client on the laptop and some type of server OS on the desktop so I can keep all my files on it. I just like to use my laptop on the couch all the time. Or maybe there is a setting or I am just neglecting my updates for too long and I need to resolve that. I would like to find a good way to synchronize whats on my computers without a headache. Im fearing my webcam has been hacked. Posted: 28 Aug 2021 10:34 AM PDT Distro: Pop_OS (its a ubuntu based one) Title. In my younger days i definitely downloaded all sorts of random crap and visited lots of shady websites on windows but then i resetted some months back and did a lot of malware scans which didnt find anything so im assuming im safe. Then I heard about linux and how cool (wow epic) it was and moved to it. But over a few days im suspecting my camera has been hacked but im not fully sure. I have this issue with chrome where the screen just randomly flashes white and idk if im just noticing that happening when the entire screen is not fully in focus of my eye or if im seeing my webcam light turn on cuz i think im seeing it more towards the top of the screen. Anything i can use to check if im being hacked?? And also im only noticing this a week after i switched to linux. Nothing like this happened when i was using windows. And i dont think i installed anything weird. Only things i installed using terminal was gufw by sudo apt-get install gufw Other than that i only used the pop shop and some other trusted apps from its source. And i think im noticing this happening around the same hour almost every day. [link] [comments] |
What is the easiest to use distro for an elderly person? Posted: 28 Aug 2021 01:44 AM PDT My aunt is in her 80's and her 5-year-old Windows PC is slow as hell and loaded with bloatware. Posted: 28 Aug 2021 09:54 AM PDT Hello, I used to have this running fine, but for some reason after my latest reinstall I can't get it working again. I tried installing Windows 10 first and then Fedora, but then I could not boot into Windows. And then I wiped my drive, installed Fedora first, and then Windows 10. Again, I could not boot into Windows. Grub does not find Windows. I did run os-prober in both sequences, but nothing. I also mounted the volume with Windows installed on it before running os-prober, but still nothing. Any ideas? P.S. Yes I know, not booting into Windows is not a problem, it is a solution. But, I want to play video games. [link] [comments] |

Investigating outgoing connections in the UFW logs (firewall) Posted: 28 Aug 2021 09:18 AM PDT Hello Reddit, I would be grateful for any help in respect of the following two things:
I have a PC with Linux Mint 20.2 (Uma) installed. I use it as a media server and also a torrent seedbox. It sits on a home LAN behind the gateway/router provided by my broadband supplier. Everyday, I SSH to the Mint PC from my main computer and check the UFW.log to see what has been happening since I last looked. This is the command I use:
I use grep in this manner because I find that I can exclude entries in the UFW log that I have previously investigated and found to be normal/regular. Thus, the command produces a concise output that identifies any outgoing connections that the firewall has allowed which may be unfamiliar to me. Because I am trying to learn both linux and networking at the same time, both the method of searching the UFW log and the results of the search are of interest to me (hence items one and two at the start of this post). This brings me to the second of the two points at the start of the post: is this a reasonable use of grep in the circumstances? If not, what is the better way to check my firewall through the command line without having to sort through reams of entries that I know are safe and are of no concern to me. I should add that I copy and paste that grep command to the terminal window, so I am not entering it in full each time I use it. I suppose I could set-up an alias to do the same thing, but my question is more concerned with the use of grep or whether there are better tools to do the same thing from the command line. Addressing the first point at the start of this post, I have noticed that the firewall has recently allowed many frequent outgoing connections to 185.162.184.6, which is a host called Bitesized. I have seen similar outgoing connections to Google servers and, after some research, I think these represent installed apps calling the mothership (server) to see if there are any updates, or something along those lines - as stated above, I am trying to teach myself about such things so I am not 100% sure of this. Rather than assume that those outgoing connections to Bitesized are benign, I move to the /var/log directory and use the following command to see whether this IP address appears anywhere else, other than the UFW logs:
The aim here is to try and establish which app is initiating that outgoing connection, or at least try and gather more information as to what it can be. Among the output of that grep command in the terminal, these items stand out (there are several similar results and I am showing just a few here for brevity):
This is my second question: is there anything those entries call tell me more about the process that appears in the UFW logs and how do I go about investigating further. I hope this makes sense. I would appreciate any advice offered, whether your own methods or criticisms/suggestions regarding mine. Many thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Aug 2021 09:11 AM PDT I've pretty much just got my Pi setup as a dns server using PiHole, and there really isn't much to configure, but just for the sake of knowledge, is there a way to upgrade the OS using the .img file, or am I basically going to have to flash the sd card again and then download/install all the packages I had before?
