Home Networking Upgrading my internet, looking for a router

Upgrading my internet, looking for a router

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 09:33 AM PDT

So I'm finally going from 100mbps to 200mbps service, and with that Verizon will be replacing my coax with Ethernet so I can move away from the FiOS Quantum Gateway and get whatever router I want. The router isn't bad, but it has a couple issues. Here is my use case...

Area - I'm in a single family home. I can see my immediate neighbors networks but they are very weak compared to my own. It's about 2300 square feet. My router is on one side of the house, but it covers the entire house pretty well. The gym only gets 2.4GHz but it's still very usable.

Devices - I have a fair number of devices, about 15 connected at any time. But ten of those are Nest speakers. The rest of my smarthome stuff is zwave or zigbee. My only WiFi 6 device is my Chromebook but my wife will likely get a new laptop soon.

Usage - There are three of us, but one of us is three so he doesn't use much bandwidth at the moment. But I'd expect we could have up to three streams going at any time. I use Stadia and Geforce Now for gaming so low latency is important. I also work from home but it's not like teams calls are worse than 4k streaming.

My main issues with my current router are...

    1. When someone has a weak signal, it bogs down all the other devices. It's especially bad if someone is streaming with a weak signal, but it's noticeable even if my wife just has her phone outside with her.
    2. Trying to stream multiple things together, even if they total well under 100mbps, can lead to a lot of latency. Really only an issue with real time streaming like Stadia.

I would love specific router recommendations, but I'm really wondering if WiFi 6 would give me any benefit currently. I know more devices will support it over time, but does it provide any advantage if I'm only looking at needing 100mbps max per device?

Converting my home coaxial network to fiber - need help

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 06:07 PM PDT

Hello my house network uses coaxial connection. I'm with Optimum internet and next week the fiber technician is coming to install a fiber in my house. In tech support told me that the technician needs to drill a hole in my living room , insert the fiber cable and connect it to the new router that will sit in my living room. In this way I will lose all my home network (I have coaxial connections in all the rooms) . today I have a coaxial cable that go inside my basement from outside and from the basement to all the rooms connections. Is there a way I can use this coaxial Internet infrastructure and convert it or use it with the fiber connection? Thanks

    Any alternatives to port forwarding?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 07:59 AM PDT

i have a server running ubuntu server and i want to access it from outside my home network. My ISP doesn't allow port forwarding unless i buy their dedicated connection. i don't want to buy the expensive service since i'm just using it to learn.

is there any way to connect the server from outside without port forewarding? i use ssh to connect and dont want to use teamviewers or any apps like that.

    TP LINK Omada AC1750 question.

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 05:41 PM PDT

So, I'm about to discus toss my Unifi AC AP pro due to it constantly deauthing itself from the controller, and started looking at the Omada AC1750 as a replacement. I also stumbled across the hardware controller.

My question is, with the hardware controller, just plug it into one of the router ports and let it do it's thing as the Web UI to setup and configure the AP?

    Wifi Router and Switch Ordering

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 05:33 PM PDT

    Hello!

I am moving into my first apartment soon and want to hardwire as much as I can when it comes to networking. I am getting a WiFi router and have an 8 port Netgear network switch. After doing some searching online, I am not sure which order I should plug everything in. From the modem, do I plug in the switch first or the router? If I want to port forward, do I do that through the router or the switch? If I want my devices to be all on the same network, wired or wireless, which comes first or does the order even matter?

I have never used a network switch before, but I am fairly confident working inside of most Wifi router GUIs

Smartphone USB Tether --> Raspberry Pi --> Router WAN port --> WIFI

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 05:05 PM PDT

I followed this guide to give internet to my raspberry pi 3B from my smartphone over USB tethering.

    https://blog.michael.franzl.name/2017/02/28/raspberry-pi-gateway-mobile-internet/

Now I want to pass that on to my router over ethernet so my router can distribute it through my home.

The raspberry pi does have internet. I even bypassed the tethering throttle limit set by visible by changing the TTL value to 65. But when I connect the ethernet port to my router's WAN port, The router's internet light shows orange (Connected but no internet).

What am I missing here? I feel like I might need to change some settings on my router but everything I've tried doesn't work.

Setup: ONEPLUS 7 PRO rooted Raspberry pi 3B on Debian 9 Stretch Netgear Nighthawk r6900v2 flashed with dd-wrt.

Protecting from lightning induced currents in long Ethernet runs

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 12:49 PM PDT

    Hello folks!

Recently we've had a large storm and it wreaked havoc, it took out one PC, an AV receiver connected to the PC and an Ethernet jack on the router and on the second computers main board too.

We have a large run of Cat5e going from upstairs to downstairs, it's at least 10 meters long, which was connected to the damaged port on the router, so I'm pretty sure that the nearby lightning strike induced a current in the conductor(s) and fried stuff.

I'd need advice on protecting our tech from such an event again, as it's quite costly to replace this stuff.

Two routers connected via CAT6 ethernet (Will I have any decrease in speeds/stability)

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 04:07 PM PDT

    I have a question.

Lets say that I have a ISP modem Router installed and want to extend this internet (lets say 20 - 30m) using a CAT6 outdoor ethernet cable. Would I suffer any loss in performance? (consider that router 1 would NOT be in use and would have password protection to disallow usage) as it is not required in that part of the household.

I am looking to potentially ONLY use Router 2.

New WAPs to replace Ruckus Zoneflex R500

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 07:41 PM PDT

I recently got a new modem/WAP from Comcast and I was surprised to find that the Comcast WAP outperforms my current wifi network (Ruckus Zoneflex R500). My former network admin suggested that I upgrade to a Wifi 6 mesh system but it seems like a missed opportunity to not utilize the ethernet/POE that I invested in.

I'd appreciate suggestions for replacing the Ruckus WAPs. Thanks a bunch.

Netgear Ac1900 Ex7000 range extender vs router?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 07:21 PM PDT

Sorry if this is a dumb question.

What exactly is the difference between a range extender and a router?

I bought the Ex7000 to work with my Arris modem/router when I had a small apartment. I need to upgrade the modem now and I'm wondering if the extender can be used as a router? I'm probably just going to get a standalone modem this time.

    Ceilings AP above the ceiling

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 07:18 PM PDT

I'm installing some ceiling WiFi APs in my house (specifically TPLink Omada EAP225, but question is more generic).

I'm wondering about instead of mounting them below the ceiling, just leaving them in the attic sitting right above the ceiling. If the ceiling is wood or plaster, that's pretty transparent to wifi?

In this case I guess I'd screw the base plate that they clip into from above, so they'd be upside down from the usual ceiling configuration.

Is this a bad idea? Why? The main motivation is laziness and cosmetic.

Recommendations for modem and router to replace my ISP one

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 07:17 PM PDT

I'm working on setting up my first home network, running cat6 to every room as well as a coax for possible future tv service. I'm getting a server rack, patch panel and a 24 port gigabit switch. Currently, I am using a modem/router combo from my ISP, but I would like to purchase my own and lose the monthly fee to use theirs, but I'm not very familiar with this area of networking. The ISP uses an Arris Touchstone DG2460, and I'd want to get a modem and router that will at least be as good as that without breaking the bank. We only get around 60MBps in our area so it doesn't have to be super powerful but I like to future proof where I can. What suggestions do you guys have for equipment?

    Router range suddenly halved?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 07:05 PM PDT

I bought the Asus RT-AC68U router about a year ago and have been using it with no problems. It's close to the modem, which is on one side of the house, but the Wifi reaches the other end of the house without issues. However the last couple of days, it seems like the range of the Wifi has been severely limited -- its range seems to have been halved.

I'm thinking that I need to get another AP up, but that's money and I'll need to punch a new hole in the wall to run the cable. Anyone have a workaround?

    Firmware suggestions for Netgear r7000

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 06:58 PM PDT

I just came into possession of a couple of Netgear AC1900 Nighthawk R7000 machines, and while I don't really have use for them at home — happy with my Airport Extreme — I'm interested to fool around with them. I haven't done any custom firmware stuff for a long time, like Linksys 54 days, so I'm out of touch. My brief research suggests both OpenWrt and DD-WRT are usable with these but kind of a pain to get working. Can anyone advise best tools to make these sing?

Upgraded my internet speed. I'm only seeing a small increase. Please help.

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 06:29 PM PDT

    Cox customer

Went from "internet 150" (150 mbps max) to "Gigablast (Up to 940mbps)

    My equipment:

    Modem: Arris, model #TM3402A

    Router: Netgear AC1750, Model #R6400v2

Wireless Adapter: TP LINK Archer Model: T4U Plus

Both router and adapter have had their firmware updated and they've both been restarted, as has my computer.

All the equipment is newish, this past year. The neighborhood was having issues but has been alright as of late.

My speed was typically 65 mbps with an old wireless adapter. The new adapter took me to 130 mbps give or take. (On old plan internet 150)

Now, on the new plan (gigblast up to 940 mbps) It is getting to 180 mpbs. (my phone meanwhile, is getting 230 mbps when tested by fast.com)

I understand a wireless connection is not going to get me way up to 940. But I have checked and I should be getting more. I am on the 5G network and the adapter says it is capable of getting to 867 mbps.

Anyone have any idea how I might be able to get more speed, without going hardwired? That really isn't an option at this point.

2 story condo that is 1200 sq ft. Is mesh network appropriate or do I just need a better router?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 06:19 PM PDT

Been having WiFi range issues recently. I have cox internet and only pay for 150, (I may need to upgrade). We have a archer A7 router on the bottom floor in the front of the condo, which is where Cox cable comes in. I know this isn't an ideal location but ideally I don't want to pay Cox to move my line.

Most of downstairs is pretty decent connection, it's my upstairs that is the problem. The master bedroom is directly above the router so that one seems okay. The issue is once you get to back of the condo where we have a office. The connection can sometimes be okay, or it could be like today and be at like 1 mbps.

I did try splitting the 2.4 and 5 ghz thinking that the 2.4 would work upstairs because all of my devices connect on 5. That proved pointless as every device registered a zero speed.

So my question is: is a basic mesh network absurd based on the size of my condo? Should I get a better router? The A7 I feel like has always had a less than decent range. Appreciate any help.

    Stronger Router or Extender?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 06:19 PM PDT

My house is concrete block and roughly 1500sq ft. My modem and router is in my office on one side of the house. Router is an Asus RT-AC68U. I get about 250mbps from my modem hardwired. In the furthest part of my house, I still get at least 200mbps but usually more. The problem is on the furthest side of the house from the router on the outside I have two ring cams that are working but have some frame dropping and stuttering due to not the best signal. RSSI usually -68 or so. Definitely works 95% of the time but looking to improve the connection. I do have a camera right outside the exterior concrete block wall of the office room and that usually shows RSSI -42, works great. Seems to just be a distance and walls combo on the others. I'm okay with upgrading router if needed. I've tried the 1st gen Google wifi back in the day but had way worse results with speed on the other side, maybe 50% at best. Is my current router pretty good already as far as range or is there much stronger/better for getting outside concrete block walls? Should I just use a cheap plugin extender in a room on that side of the house? Side note, I'm probably going to flash the router with the merlin firmware if I keep it since the traffic monitoring in the stock firmware is super limited without agreeing to the trendmicro traffic analysis thing Asus uses.

No ethernet jack, but I do have a telephone and tv cable jack that are both bare

I want to have wired internet that's as good as ethernet connection with either the telephone jack or tv jack at my disposal. I've been using a powerline adapter this whole time and would like to have a more reliable wired connection. What is the best and cheapest way that I could accomplish this?

    4g+ Router for Remote working

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 05:45 PM PDT

    Hey,

I'm looking to buy a 4G+ router in order to remote work from a hotel (bad wifi probably).

I'm confused as to what would be the best option:

    - TP-Link MR600

    - TP-Link M7650

They are roughly the same price but the M7650 is using CAT12 while MR600 is only using CAT6. On the other side, MR600 seems to have better antenas.

Which is best for internet speed in your opinion?

    Thank you

Eero or xfinity Xb6 as main router?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 01:49 PM PDT

We just got rid of Xfinity's security system so now we have the choice of using the Eero as the main router. The Eero's mesh (3 of them) are currently in bridge mode. Is there any benefit of switching this around and putting the Xb6 in bridge and just using it as a modem? Or at least turning DHCP off if it doesn't support a bridge mode. Haven't looked into its settings for it yet.

I'm pretty sure the eeros are faster and have more ram and flash memory. It's hard to find specs for the Xb6.

Improve wifi coverage to corner of the house

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 05:06 PM PDT

Hello. I have my gaming stuff in my bedroom which is located in a corner of the house on the other side of the router. Sadly, I cannot move the router to a central location due to the absence of phone plugs or whatever it's called to get internet access. The distance in a straight line would be around 15m I think, but there are some walls and obstructions in the way. I have used wifi extenders with pretty bad results, mainly ping jitter and disconnections. I was using the TP-Link WPA4226 powerline adapters for a year and a half with pretty decent results until they stopped working recently after making a high pitched noise for some time. So now, I am thinking of all options to improve wifi coverage in my bedroom. My main need is stable ping so I can game optimally, I am not that interested in maintaining the full speed of the connection. What options would you recommend me to improve the wifi coverage? Should I stick to new powerline adapters or there are better options, such as APs, mesh etc? My router is a pretty old TD-W8960N V5.

Unstable connection in rowhouse basement: upgrade router or try MoCA?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 01:06 PM PDT

I am a novice here but have tried to do my homework. I am not on a tight budget per se but would prefer not to cut into my walls to run ethernet. The home's internet usage is moderate personal and home office use (streaming, video calls, youtube TV) and the service I pay for reflects that (200 mbps).

Setting: medium-sized urban rowhome (2,000 sq ft) with a basement, ground floor, and top floor.

Problem: unstable and somewhat slow WiFi in basement gym area. Gym has TV for casting workouts from phone to Apple TV and a Peloton which requires WiFi. Both get unstable connections at times. By unstable I mean connection dropping and/or long periods of buffering.

Equipment and services: Comcast Xfinity 200 mbps. Working with older equipment: Arris SB6141 modem and Asus RT-N66U router located on ground (middle) floor. Getting 200 mbps near router, more like 30 mbps in basement. DO have coax cable running to each floor. DO NOT have ethernet running to each floor. Cheap repeater/extender has not been helpful.

    Possible solutions:

    a. Better/newer router may throw stronger signal to basement? Seems like wishful thinking, but I am working with older hardware.

    b. Moca? I do not use the coax for TV. From what I understand, I'd get Moca adapters and set up an AP in the basement. Then the basement devices could be either hardwired or connect to the WiFi that the AP is throwing.

Thoughts on strategy 1 vs 2? Specific hardware recommendations for either? Things I am overlooking?

How long can networking COAX be ran without loss of performance.

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 04:26 PM PDT

Another question for you incredible folks.

How long can a COAX cable be ran without loss of performance. For clarity this would be for a Virgin Media installation. I would be looking to run a COAX cable roughly 30-50m from the household out to a second building. Internet has me a little confused. Would likely be a high spec cable but unsure of the exact cable required. I heard somewhere it was called WF100 or something along those lines.
