Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Absolute max $700, would like to be closer to $550

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

Yes, but only if it's reliable

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Dont know exactly what this is asking, but battery life is not as important to me as much as having the ability to have multiple tabs open and having the capability to run statistical software.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

*This is the most important factor for me. The lighter the better. I'll be walking a lot with my computer in my backpack.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    n/a

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    STATA

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    n/a

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good keyboard is a must. Also needs to have webcam and hdmi hookup

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I have a gaming laptop I've been lugging to and from work (I walk to commute) and it's awful. Please help.

Need help choosing a laptop for a stem student

    Posted: 30 Aug 2021 11:42 PM PDT

I've been looking around and computer details confuse me a lot so I hope this helps. I'm a stem student who needs a new laptop preferably a 2-in-1 because I like being able to use a stylus. I've been looking at the Surface 4 (15 in) and HP Envy (15 in) but am open to suggestions. Will also be using this on trips.

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:**

$700-$1400 (I live in the US)

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Yes

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I would prefer to get a 2-in-1 as I like using a stylus for work. Would prefer better battery life over performance but that's not that big of a deal. I dislike big bezels, idk if this applies to this section.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

I can deal with some heft but prefer it to not be too much as I plan on using this during trips too

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    14 inches to 16

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I might do some light gaming on it but not planning on using cad or editing

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Low to medium settings at around 30-60 fps

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Would prefer it to not be too flimsy, a good keyboard would be a nice bonus, don't need an optical drive

    Thanks!

I'm not looking for these features: * Long lasting battery life * 4K display * Light weight

Business laptop with great screen and graphic design option

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 01:29 AM PDT

    Hi folks,

I am looking for business laptop with good screen which will be also capable to make simple graphic design. Preferably less than 15" and max $2k. Im living in Europe so laptops usually are more expensive than USA.

I bought Surface book 3, but im returning it, screen is overheating so im not taking a risk.

I thought about ThinkPad X1 Carbon, but 9 gen is too expensive and I am not sure if it will be enough for graphic design. (But maybe it will be and 8 gen will be enought?).

Please let me know about recommendation.

Need a laptop for Photo editing and occasional 3D simulations

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 01:25 AM PDT

I'm a mechanical engineering student looking for a laptop that is good for 3D simulations like Solidworks and photo editing. Since I'm a student portability will be appreciated. Since I edit a lot of photos a screen with decent colour accuracy is needed. I have a budget of around 1000 to 1200. Last year models would be fine. From my limited research I have narrowed down to 2 models. The 2020 asus zephyrus g14(Ryzen 9 4900hs and GTX 1660ti with the QHD 60hz screen) and the 2020 Legion 5 ( Ryzen 7 4800h and GTX 1660ti). I've also looked at the 2021 legion 5 with the rtx 3050ti which as actually cheaper than the 2020 model. But I'm a little hesitant on that as I've seen a lot of bad reviews with the 3050ti. Finally gaming is not a priority for me. I only play games occasionally. Are these 2 options good? Which one amongst them would you choose? I'm leaning towards the g14. Are there any other good options? I'm open to suggestions.

Need help finding a laptop that costs no more than 800 USD

    Posted: 30 Aug 2021 09:27 PM PDT

Recently my Acer Nitro 5's screen completely broke. I've been looking for a computer, but decided against it since the prices are so high. Does anyone know a good budget gaming laptop that can also be used for school? If not then what about a pre built pc that isn't too expensive? I'm just very desperate.

Another Non-gaming 90hz+ display laptop thread

    Posted: 30 Aug 2021 08:57 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    Under $2700

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Yes

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Open to anything. Just dont care for the gamer aesthetic

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Both would be awesome, albeit not necessary

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    13-16 inches

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I wouldn't mind gaming on it if I was to travel, but I dont believe it to be a priority. Just a "if its there, ill use it" type of thing.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I would prefer 1080p 100fps+ if I plan on gaming ever. I dont mind going to medium graphics to do so.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Just a higher refresh rate than 60hz at this point :/

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I've been suggested different types of laptops before but I feel like those still inch towards gamer aesthetic. I understand that what I am asking for is a unicorn, but I really just want to see where we are at this point of 2021.

I've seen laptops that arent sold in the US such as the Lenovo ideapad 5i pro 16 which actually is apparently sold in the US but only on Amazon? But other laptops too such as the HP line of laptops with sureview that are 1080p which have 120hz. I've read that those aren't all that great though once they're in hand. Thoughts?

I've also read a lot of articles about samsung releasing a 90hz oled laptop which I can't seem to find any recent news on it. Most recent being January 2021.

Need a laptop around 1000$ (US) college, light gaming, light video editing

    Posted: 30 Aug 2021 07:06 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
$1000 USD, could maybe go over a little bit
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
preferably a discreet gaming laptop. I'm not into the crazy RGB and logos and stuff. I want it to look like a normal laptop and not draw much attention.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
I do not care really. Not Harry Potter novel thick, but not paper thin either, reasonable I guess? And weight is not an issue.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
Above 13". My current laptop 15.6" diagonally, and as such I would like something around this size. a little bit smaller is ok but no more than an inch or two. Bigger is fine.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
CAD, Photo editing, and gaming. not much video stuff (though I do have plans in the future.) CAD programs such as SolidWorks, Blender, Autodesk, SnapGene, Python and MatLab. Light Photo editing stuff because my gf likes to do photo stuff and she has an expensive Canon that she takes pictures at parties/wedding/family stuff. Light gaming stuff listed below.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Things like Skyrim (barely modded), Minecraft, Dead Space 2, Fallout 4 (barely modded), FO New Vegas, etc. Not really any modern titles, but old titles I want to play near the best they can be without buying a full desktop setup.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Must be reliable I want it to last a good while (at least 2-3 years min), have full keyboard with number pad, would like backlit keys that can be turned on and off (but again, don't care about RGB). Would be nice to have a dvd port so I can watch my old ass movies lol, but not required. Would also be nice to have touchscreen, but also not required. I'm not really into the whole 2in1 thing, but my current laptop has a touchscreen and it comes in handy. I don't care about fingerprint sensor, massive refresh rates or 4k, but I do want it to be above 1080p and 60hz, so like 1440p and 120hz I guess? I am not too well versed in this area.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
My current laptop is an HP Pavilion 15-cc0xx, and I like it a lot. It has an i5-7200u (7th gen), no graphics, a dvd drive, 15.6" screen, and is touch screen but not 2in1. Again, it's good, but I bought it like 4 years ago and it was great for end of high school/first 2 years of college but it is now at the end of its lifecycle and I can feel it getting slower and slower, the battery life is totally shot (lasts 55 minutes idle when unplugged at 100%), and no graphics card hurts cuz I cant play many of the games I want to play at any relative quality.

I'd say I want i5 or i7 or r5 or r7, it does not to be crazy i9 or r9. As for graphics cards, the lowest I would go is a 1660ti, but I would prefer like a 2060 or up. Again, I am not really deadset on what I want yet, hence posting to this subreddit.

Looking for a budget (<$950) gaming laptop, ideally sleek with multimedia editing capacity!

    Posted: 30 Aug 2021 10:45 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: My budget is under $950, ideally cheaper. Country of purchase: USA
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications to your requirements for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Ideally strong specifications and not 2-in-1. I expect this computer to be non-mobile, so while I'd like a decent battery, I'm not sure that's the top priority
    • How important is weight to you? This computer will be mainly desk/apartment rooted, but having it somewhat comfortable for travel would be great so that it can be a backup machine for work/etc.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Linux, Mac. My main day-to-day laptop is an older Mac, and I'm looking to get a PC specifically for gaming and some additional video/photo/audio editing. IF a Mac reaches my overall need though, please let me know!
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A. I'm expecting to also buy a monitor.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. If you have no requirements, put N/A. Definitely gaming! Mostly games that came out prior to 2019. Additionally, if it can support Adobe editing software, I'd be ecstatic.
    • If you're gaming (leave blank if you put N/A above...), do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Looking to mostly play games in the Arkham/Bioshock/older Assassins Creed/Tomb Raider realm and a bunch of more indie games, rather than the current AAA releases. I'm not entirely sure on particular settings, whatever is enough for a decent FPS.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable business grade build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Since I'm used to a Mac keyboard, something sleeker might be ideal. It'd be nice if it was aesthetically pleasing, but I'm looking for whatever quality and comfort I can get.

I'm completely at a loss to determine what kind of power I need to run these games, and am hoping y'all can help! I'm a mild sucker for computers with a colorful case, but know those are few and far between.

Unreal Engine Realtime filmmaker Looking for $700 - $1100 13''- 15'' two-in-one for writing, storyboarding, and recording motion capture [uSA]

    Posted: 30 Aug 2021 09:36 AM PDT

Looking for a two-in-one for storyboarding, screenwriting, and acting as a motion capture hub. I already have a very nice desktop that I will be doing most of my work on. This laptop is meant purely for doing remote writing sessions, storyboarding sequences, and acting as a motion capture hub (leaning towards buying a Rokoko suit). I would like to be open to use Unreal Engine to make some quick scene edits, but as long as I can record motion capture data on this laptop it will suffice.

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    $700 - $1000

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Yes

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

2-in 1, 16GB RAM, AND CPU, 400nits screen (for using outside), should be decently portable as this is not a desktop replacement, battery life is also important. Don't need a dedicated GPU.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

I don't want this to be big as I will be taking it around with me. I do not want this to be a desktop replacement, so form factor is more important than performance.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Idealy 14'', but max is 15.6''.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I am using this primarily as a storyboarding but might do some basic video editing for making quick cuts. I would also like to be open up an Unreal Engine scene and do some previs work at very low settings. However the main thing I need to use this for is to record motion capture data from a future motion capture suit purchase (likely Rokoko).

Don't care about this for playing games at all as this is not my primary PC.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Don't care about gaming at all, I already have a very nice desktop.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Two-in-One is a requirement. I also need this to be powerful enough to record motion capture data.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

As stated already I have a very nice desktop which is my primary machine for development. The point of this laptop is to have the ability to go to places like a coffee shop and storyboard/script out a scene, and then record motion capture data outside as bring my desktop around is not the most convenient thing to do.

Need a gaming laptop that I can also use for business

    Posted: 30 Aug 2021 11:31 AM PDT

I've been using a Dell XPS 13 9360 for the past few years, but I would like to upgrade and am looking for a gaming laptop that I looks professional enough to not stick out in a uni classroom or a meeting. Something like the razer blade would be amazing, but the blade doesn't have the best battery life. I like the blade aesthetic and that is exactly what I'm looking for, just wish that the battery life was a little longer.

    Requirements for laptop:

-Play latest AAA titles on max settings at >60 fps.

-Look like it could fit into a business setting without looking too "gamery."

-Have a battery life of 7-8 hours while doing tasks like surfing the web or using excel

-Don't really have a budget so feel free to give me your wildest recommendation

Which laptop should I go with?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2021 09:35 PM PDT

I just recently got the Galaxy Book Pro 360 i7-11gen and was thinking of returning it because the fans are pretty loud with light browsing and that's really annoying. I was thinking of this Lenovo laptop. Any opions would be great.
