[Ukraine] 15" Laptop mostly for programming, Linux friendly.

    Posted: 17 Jul 2021 01:41 AM PDT

Hi everyone, looking for a laptop for programming running Linux. I will play several games on steam.

    Specs:

CPU: I have no clue which one is good.

GPU: Discrete preferred, but I'm opened to options with only an integrated one.

    RAM: 16/32 GB

    Storage: 1TB SSD

    Display: 15'' Not sure 1920x1080 or 3840x2160

Price: ~$2000 or a little bit higher.

Currently, stopped on Dell XPS 15 7590 (XPS7590-7527SLV-PUS), but maybe there are better variants.

    Thank you for any suggestions!

Starting my Master's in Computer Science and will love some recommendations.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Ultrabook, 2 in 1, traditional is also fine in case others aren't available for these specs.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Portability is important as I will be moving around a lot.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/ A.

Indifferent but not too small. Avg 15".

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/ gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Will be using the laptop for gaming as well. Will be using a few photo editing softwares as well

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I primarily play Fortnite preferably 60fps.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Reliable build quality. Touch screen optional. Finger print reader optional. Good input devices.

Looking for a school laptop for a CS Major

    Posted: 16 Jul 2021 06:06 PM PDT

    Usages:

    • Light gaming (mainly League of Legends)
    • Coding
    • Watching youtube/movies
    • Note-taking

    Budget: ~$600 to ~$800

I'm looking into a few laptops right now if anyone could suggest new ones or say their opinions on these I'd really appreciate it

    Lenovo Flex (5700U) $650

    • I like the price range, the extra accessories like the fingerprint reader, the ability to turn into a little iPad I can write on and take notes, touch screen, etc, BUT apparently, the screen is just awful and it can't even be used outside, or in dimly lit spaces.

    Acer Swift 3 $620.58

    • Super cheap, I'm not sure about the screen and if it's any better than the Lenovo's, everyone's saying different things.

    [Gaming Laptop] Gigabyte G5 KC-5UK1130SH at £999

    Gigabyte G5 KC-5UK1130SH at £999

    Hi all,

I currently have the MSI GP63 Leopard 8RE and looking to upgrade. I have seen a lot about the Gigabyte G5 here are the specs:

    • 15.6" 144Hz Display
    • Intel i5-10500H
    • GeForce RTX 3060
    • 16GB DDR4 3200Mhz
    • 512GB PCI-e SSD
    • Win10 Home
    • RGB Keyboard
    • 2 Year Warranty

Is this worth it for £999? It has been reduced from £1200 to £999 on a sale. Every review seems promising saying it's the best bang for buck gaming laptop on the market but I thought I'd ask for your opinions too.

    Thank you

Looking for gaming laptop under 900CAD$ that can emulate 3DS and PS2

    Posted: 17 Jul 2021 04:09 AM PDT

    Hey, how's it going.

I've been looking to get a new laptop for a while because my MacBook is nearing the end of its life and is really limited when it comes to emulation.

I'm looking for a reasonably priced gaming laptop, Windows, and can emulate difficult emulators like Citra.

I don't really care about playing games on 4K or 8x resolution.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

      900CAD, Canada

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      No.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance is the most important, battery life is second, and everything else is not a concern to me.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

      Not important at all.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I want to run Citra emulator to run games like Fire Emblem, Pokemon and Shin Megami Tensei games. PCX2 and PS1 to run games like Shin Megami Tensei. Dolphin to run Fire Emblem and some Pokemon games.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Native resolution or possibly a little better, but nothing extreme like 8x or 4K. Running games as smooth as possible with 60FPS is my main priority.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

      No.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

If there's anything below the 900CAD price range then I'd prefer that but I'm also willing to spend a bit more but nothing too astronomically high.

    Thanks for your time.

[India] 15" Laptop for office work and OTT entertainment

    Posted: 17 Jul 2021 02:42 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    INR 65,000, India

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance > build quality > battery life. Not interested in gimmicky features.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not much. Laptop will mostly be stationary.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    15" or bigger.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Basic office work (Chrome, Excel, Slack, Photoshop etc.) and occasional media consumption.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

N/A. No gaming at all. But if the features come under my budget, suggestions are welcome.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good screen & battery. The user of the laptop is partially blind and uses the laptop through Windows Accessibility Features (Magnifier) to read text. I guess touch would be good since it would be easier to zoom in and out, but the feature isn't a priority.

Looking for the right chromebook to turn into a hackintop with at least 550kb/s download speed

    Posted: 17 Jul 2021 02:21 AM PDT

Torn between the first and second models of chromebook. It has to be a chromebook, and I'll think about turning it into a hackintosh, to sell in a rare unique quirky laptop store that I want to set up. Other things I'll sell are an alienware style tablet, a flip phone that's actually the world's smallest linux-hackintop, and a jerry can that's actually a hackintop in disguise. Must all have 550kb/s download speed maximum.

Incoming College Student (either CS or Economics) looking for a suitable laptop.

    Posted: 17 Jul 2021 01:14 AM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
    • 3500-4500 AED (UAE Currency, roughly $1000-$1200). I'll be going to university in the US in September, so could look to wait until then as the laptop might be cheaper there.
      Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
    • Since I'll be going to college, battery life is definitely a priority. I don't think I'll be doing much gaming, and so I'll probably be fine with an ultrabook (though the 120/144hz screens on gaming laptops do look appealing haha).
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
    • Since I'll be tugging the laptop around in my backpack for the day, I want something relatively light/compact.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
    • At least 13 inches.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
    • At the moment, I am undecided regarding my future major. If I pursue a career in finance, I'll have to use Excel during internships (and perhaps myself to learn different skills). Since Excel on Mac OS is a bit of a pain, this may affect my choice of getting a M1 MBA (some guidance here would be good). Alternatively, I could look towards computer science, for which Mac OS seems relatively decent.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Relatively N/A. However, I do play a couple FPS games (Valorant, CS:GO). So, playing these games may be cool, not a deal breaker though.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Good keyboard is a priority, along with reliable build quality (I don't want to deal with QC issues all the time). I would prefer not to have a touch screen, and would like to go with a laptop with 16GB RAM.

lenovo yoga c940 15'' for gaming and uni

    Posted: 17 Jul 2021 12:07 AM PDT

    Hi,

I was looking for a laptop that: - has touch screen with palm rejection (for taking uni notes) - Is portable (for uni) - Can play most games for casual gaming (decent gpu) - is ideally $1500ish

I was almost sold on the lenovo but I've seen a few reviews saying that gaming drops the battery life to 3 hours which destroys the battery long term and shortens the overall computer life (?)

Also found some reviews saying that the lenovo palm rejection isn't great

Would anyone be able to clarify if there's a work around to these issues? Or any other issues / opinions they have on the yoga? Or possibly suggest something alternative that fits this criteria?

    Thanks!

Sleek business laptop with good screen

    Posted: 17 Jul 2021 12:03 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

55k PHP or 1k USD or less Philippines but our selection of laptops is here is basically equivalent to the US anyways due to Taiwanese importers.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

Nope, Current gen new is best if possible.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Thin and light would be best, i wouldn't want a small screen though so 14 inches or bigger is best.

Well designed keyboard, good build quality and a good design are all good to have.

For performance a latest gen Ryzen or Intel 11th gen cpu would be good. Anything i3 or R3 and up is plenty fast enough.

Decent battery life is nice to have.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Thin and light would be pretty nice in keeping with an overall good build quality

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    14 inches or larger

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Photo viewing with some light photoshop. So a colour accurate screen is a must.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

No games, i already have a desktop for that. So no need for dedicated graphics.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good keyboard and build quality are must haves. The rest are irrelevant since I'll have a mouse anyways.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

It's mainly going to be used for office work and very light photo work. So just snappy enough to do all of those without any waiting around at all is a must.

A good quality bright and color accurate screen is a big requirement. So I'd lean heavily on that.

No Macs because they'd conflict with the rest of my devices and be more trouble than they're worth.

Advice choosing between laptops for a RAM fiend

    Posted: 16 Jul 2021 01:10 PM PDT

    Hi,

I'm a gamedev so I've been waiting a long time for a laptop for laptops to be on par with the new console generation. I'm essentially looking for a laptop that I can use to work on the road but also display my games at shows, which are targeting ps5 and xbsx, without performing badly.

My problem is - I really like the Zephyrus g15 a lot but 16gb is a deal breaker. 8gb is soldered in. I believe I could add 32gb for the 40gb but only the first 16gb would be dual channel and windows doesn't intelligently manage your RAM, so it would be a significant performance hit to my understanding?

I have found a replacement laptop I like (ASUS ROG STRIX SCAR 15) but the screen looks a bit flimsy. It has 32GB of ram, it's only £200 more expensive, and it has the 3080. What I'm unsure of is.. the screen is 1080p300hz. I don't care about hz over 120 but I do like high resolution just for screen real estate. I know I can just plug a screen in but qhd would give me more screen space on the road. The other thing I don't like is that it has a loud mechanical keyboard and it's physically ugly with RGB everywhere, but it seems decently specced other than the screen.

    Question:

Do you know a laptop that better suits my needs, or do you think "hey whatever man, 1080p is fine on a 15 inch screen, you would be squinting at qhd anyway"? "dw man the screen may flex a little but it won't crack, you will be okay, it isn't a low quality chassis like pc specialist". Or even "nah man who even cares about the 3080 you won't get the watt draw to make it worth it and single channel memory doesn't even really matter, get the zephyrus and upgrade", or "hey did you know the 32gb zephyrus is coming out in 2 weeks"?

Basically anything helpful to my conundrum is appreciated

    Requirements:

    • at least 32gb RAM

    • sturdy screen. I've had many screen cracks before on flimsy screens because I travel a lot and I'm always pulling my laptop out to demo my game in weird places so it needs to not break

    • needs to be reasonably on par with new consoles. imo this means at least 3070 mobile and 5800h

    • UK keyboard layout

    • max 15.6 inch

    Nice to have:

    • sleek. I don't like RGB lighting and sharp gamer style aesthetics

    • connected chiclet keys. I just find lower travel faster for typing, I don't like mechanical keys

    • QHD ips preferred. I have no use for 300hz

    Programs:

I am often running 2-3 instances of Unity at once for different console branches. I use FL Studio a lot with lots of VSTs, I edit video in DaVinci frequently. I stream with slobs. I edit assets with photoshop. I use my VPN often, I also parsec into my desktop a lot. And I have the console devkit suites running often. Rider. Usually have Google drive running. A million instances of Firefox. Thunderbird, rambox, matlab sometimes, evernote, ms office, sourcetree, everything, etc. etc. etc.

    Thanks

[Canada] $1500-2500 Looking for 13" ultrabook

    Posted: 16 Jul 2021 10:52 PM PDT

    The Form

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: Between 1500-2500 (CAD)
    • Are you open to refurbs/used? Refurbs maybe, used probably not.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? ultrabook, build quality, battery life, performance
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight and thinness is very important planning to travel with this laptop, move it around. Since my work laptop is heavy and bulky don't want another heavy laptop.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13" should be good as long as it has the ability to connect to a bigger screen
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. None of the above, mostly video, web browsing, google docs/office, video calls, some web games
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? This will not be a gaming laptop. No specific games, playing mostly web and rarely Heroes of Might and Magic but this is a nice to have.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Webcam (HD), Keyboard is important as well as build quality (preferably not plastic casing), touchpad, SSD, USB 3, USB C, nice to have ability to connect to 2 screens natively, Quiet - without noisy fans. Reliable laptop and good support would be nice as well.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I currently have XPS 13 9350 which looks like ended his life. I liked that it was light, small and very nice to touch the metal casing and keyboard. I also have my work laptop Lenovo ThinkPad T480 which I hate because it's the complete opposite, bulky, noisy, heavy. Are there something similar to XPS 13 I should be looking at and if XPS 13 which model (2020 or 2021 or maybe I should wait for 2022). Thank you.

The new portable Steam device as opposed to a gaming laptop?

I am going over the road as a trucker, so i was in the market for a portable gaming PC (aka a laptop), but now im seeing this new portable steam device announced which seems awesome for my situation. I wanna know what you more tech savy people think about it. Its about 1/3 the cost of what i would expect to pay for a decent gaming laptop, i liked the lenovo legion 5 previously. Obviously you dont get the full PC, but should this suffice for mobile gaming?

    Laptop for Urban Planning Student

    Posted: 16 Jul 2021 06:18 PM PDT

Transferring out of community college as a Urban planning major. My current laptop has met its end so I'm in the market for a new laptop for school. My school gave me a laptop requirement and a list of programs I will use. My problem is I don't know what configuration will satisfy the requirements and run all program. Fortunate that the expense for the laptop is covered. Don't need nothing that is overboard just something with enough GPU power as that is what they highlight multiple times. And recommend gaming laptops but my brothers msi stealth gaming laptop dies in about 4 hours and the charging brick is massive for something new haha

Software I will use is : MS office suite, ArcGIS, Adobe Suite, SPSS, Sketchup, AutoCAD

They recommend a pc over a Mac as ArcGIS doesn't work with mac.

My question is what Gpu is good enough. I want a gaming laptop but the battery life is my biggest issue as most last 3-5 hours unless you have the charger on you.

    There description for requirements is

Cpu: 2.2 GHZ minimum Platform: x86 or x64 with SSE2 extension Memory/RAM: min 4gb recommended 8gb or higher Video/graphics adapter: (part i don't understand) 64MB RAM minimum; 256 MB RAM or higher recommended. NVIDA, ATI and intel chipsets supported . 24-bit capable graphics accelerator openGL version 2.0 runtime minimum is required and shader Model 3.0 or higher is recommended

Been looking at laptops with Intel xe graphics card or NVIDA graphics cards but ideally I want something that will get the job done, runs the programs smoothly and decent battery life. I have a gaming computer at home but I'll be on campus a lot so need a laptop to be able to work at school. Price I can go up to $2500

Looking for business and school laptop $1700 budget USA

    Posted: 16 Jul 2021 05:36 PM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    $1700 USA

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance, Build Quality, Battery Life, Form Factor

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not important

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    15 inches or 17 inches

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    No

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    N/A

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Would really like good input devices and a high resolution monitor. Touch screen doesn't matter as much but that would be nice as well.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Thank you for any suggestions. I've been looking at the Dell XPS 13 and the Dell Inspiron series so far.
