[USA] ~$1500 Lightweight Windows Laptop for Writing and Light Gaming Posted: 31 Jul 2021 01:18 AM PDT Hi all! I'm an incoming college freshman looking for a Windows laptop to use during my post secondary years. This is my first time searching for a laptop, so all advice is welcome! :D LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US Are you open to refurbs/used? How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? How important is weight and thinness to you? Worse comes to worst, I'd consider sacrificing weight for quality... but I want to do anything possible to avoid that. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Other requirements: webcam, quiet fan, good audio quality, lots of storage (since I save a lot of my writing/other stuff onto my computer), fast. My Ol' Reliable PC has been slowing down for the past year, so it's become incredibly....... slow........ As in, takes five minutes to boot up slow. This laptop is going to be my main computer for the next 4 years, so I want something that's reliable all around. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jul 2021 03:54 AM PDT My old Surface Pro 4 is crapping out. The screen glitches and it is slow as dirt. I would have upgraded long ago, but I cannot stand subscription based model of Office 365. Can I just use office 2016? [link] [comments] |

Would like laptop suggestions :) Posted: 30 Jul 2021 04:25 PM PDT Starting uni soon so I wanted some good laptop recommendations since I don't know anything. I plan on using the laptop to browse, create PowerPoint, edit, run an online business and general research Price: up to £1,600 or 2,224 usd I've heard alot about Intel and amd AMD but i don't know which ones good so any information on them would be helpful :) What I would like: •lasts long (couples of years) •long battery life ( more than 7 ideally) •back-lit keyboard •doesn't overheat •good audio and camera •storage 512GB and up •good build •RAM 8GB+ I've heard that's SSD storage is better than HDD. So the storage I would ideally like to be SSD. A question I have is would it be better to buy a laptop with 1 terabyte of storage or buy one with 512GB and upgrade it? I'm open to all laptops within the budget. If you could suggest one and say why it is good from experience that would be greatly helpful. The weight doesn't really bother me but if it's on the lighter side that would be nice. [link] [comments] |

Laptop for work (image analysis, pathology slide viewing) and PhD Posted: 31 Jul 2021 02:29 AM PDT Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: Are you open to refurbs/used? How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Performance is the most important. It'll have to be able to run all the applications that i need for my work ( list below) as smoothly as possible. Second is build quality. I'm looking for something durable. I'd prioritize a portable form factor over long battery life because I'll be carrying it around quite a bit but I'll proably mostly use it plugged in. How important is weight and thinness to you? Rather important because I'll be carring it with me quite a lot. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I'll use some programs for visualizing and analizing scanned microscope slides : NDPview, Calopix, QuPath, Visiopharm. I'll also use Inkscape and ImageJ for my work and for creating figures for scientific presentations. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Not a priority but being able to do some light gaming would be a plus. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A good and sufficently big screen is a must. A good keyboard would also ne nice but isn't an absolute priority. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 30 Jul 2021 07:57 PM PDT I've found three laptop options, which I'll link below. I'm looking for a laptop that I can use for gaming, maybe some content creation. Eventually I might use it for game design/development or animation. I'm basically looking for a laptop under 750ish USD with a decent specs. This is what I found- There is this EVOO Laptop with really good specs for a $550 laptop. This is the cheapest option I found. Then there is this HP Pavilion laptop. I'm not exactly fond of this laptop since the first one I mentioned is pretty much the same laptop but cheaper. Though this would be a good option if EVOO isn't a great brand Finally, there is this EVOO laptop. It is the most expensive of the three I found. It's better than the others though it'll still probably need a storage upgrade eventually. So which one do y'all think is the best deal? I personally don't know the EVOO brand very well. Are they good? Do they make reliable laptops? Generally how do they perform? [link] [comments] |

UltraBook/Slim Gaming Laptop Advice Posted: 30 Jul 2021 05:34 PM PDT Hello Everyone, I'm currently in the market to replace my current laptop and I thought I might as well spend a few hundred extra dollars to get a laptop with gaming capability that is also sleek looking and lightweight. I've been looking and researching for the past few days and have been having a hard time deciding what's the best option. I value the appearance over the gaming aspect but I would like it to be capable to run games on at least average settings. I'm interested in using it for games like val, new world, and overwatch. I've looked at the following laptops; Razer Blade Stealth 13.3. | Razer Blade 14/15. | Legion Slim 7. | ASUS - ROG 13.4" Gaming Laptop. I don't want anything over 15" and ideally it would be sub 5 lbs. if anybody has any suggestions it'd be really appreciated, I want to make the right purchase and I've been having a tough time trying to decide it on my own. I really like the Razer blade size and specs, my only worry is I've seen posts on the subreddit about battery bloating and the company not having the best customer service. I appreciate any and all help, thank you in advance! [link] [comments] |
Looking for a relatively cheap laptop for masters thesis and music recording Posted: 30 Jul 2021 11:18 PM PDT Hello folks, I'm new to this sub, so let me know if anything is out of place. **LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:** Approximately $400, in the US. Are you open to refurbs/used? I'd prefer new, but if a refurbished one can get me through the next 5 of years of school then I can probably settle. How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Performance is probably most important. I have to teach some Zoom classes and I don't want the computer stalling on me while teaching. Battery life would be next in line (although I intend to have it plugged in most of the time), then build quality, and form factor is least prioritized. How important is weight and thinness to you? Just as long as it can fit in my backpack, it can be as big and bulky as necessary. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming would be light, as I intend to get a Steam Deck when that drops. I mostly need something that can run multiple internet tabs, Zoom, and PowerPoint smoothly at the same time. I'll also be running SPSS and Excel a bit for some masters program research. I also intend to record some music, I'll likely be using Reaper (I don't know much about plug-ins yet though). If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I would really like a touch screen and track pad because that's what I'm used to, but it's not make or break. I also like having a cd drive, but again, it's not absolutely necessary. I would like it to be durable enough to last me until I finish up my program (which may take 5 years), but I realize that's not something that can always be easily predicted. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I think I hit all the key points: I need something that can run multiple Chrome tabs, along with PowerPoint, Zoom, and SPSS. I would like to use some kind of DAW (I just want to record some demos so I don't need something top of the line). I also want to be able to run Anti-virus protection without it drastically slowing down the computer. I also prefer Windows, it's the only system I really know how to use. Thank you to anyone who responds in advance! [link] [comments] |
best laptop sub 2000 CAD for engineering! Posted: 30 Jul 2021 01:32 PM PDT Hi, I am entering 3rd year of chemical engineering and looking for a new laptop. My mac air recently crashed and I am looking to switch to windows computers. From my research, I would ideally want: 8-16 GB RAM 512 SSD Intel I5 or I7 good battery life and portable also an asset, and I am open to 2 in 1's. My dilemma is whether to get a higher tiered model with lower specs or the lower tiered model with higher specs. At dell for example, the inspiron with 16 RAM, 512 SSD and I7 is a similar price point to the 8 RAM XPS. In addition to dell, I am considering HP envy 360x, Thinkpad or surface and open to others provided they are sub 2000 CAD. I am not a gamer, so this laptop will primarily be for school and personal research. Looking for best value laptop that will last a couple years. Thanks in advance!! [link] [comments] |

Lenovo Legion Slim 7 or ASUS Zephyrus M16? Posted: 30 Jul 2021 09:40 PM PDT Hi there. I am looking to buy a new laptop after having a Macbook for the last 10 years or so and I was considering these two models: Lenovo Legion Slim 7
ASUS Zephyrus M16
I would mainly use this for day-to-day stuff (YouTube, Reddit, Google Docs, etc.) and play games like COD: Warzone fairly regularly. I also like to use DAW systems like Ableton and occasionally use photo editing software as well. Which one is most worth the money? Keep in mind I have very little knowledge of how either of these laptops or their processors perform and could use some explanation. Any and all advice would be appreciated :) Thank you! Posted: 30 Jul 2021 08:18 PM PDT I am confused between the iris xe max and mx450. Although both are good dedicated graphics card, I am not sure if Intel's first dedicated graphics card is optimized nicely and how it fairs against mx450 But the thing is, mx450 comes with i5-11300h(2.6ghz, 8mb cache) and intel iris xe max with i7-1165g7(2.8ghz, 12mb cache) [base clocking] [link] [comments] |
Laptop for Adobe Premiere Pro and Blender ($800-900 USD) Posted: 30 Jul 2021 01:51 PM PDT Looking for a laptop that can handle video editing (premiere pro) and can run Blender to a decent level. My budget right now is around 800-900, but I'm ok with it going a little above if it's worth it. Also, mobility of the laptop is preferred, but definitely not a must. I've seen some threads saying that I should just look for a gaming laptop, but I don't know how valid those opinions are so I'm coming here for more opinions. With that being said, I'm pretty much open to any type of build or feature, so feel free to make suggestions. Thanks for the help in advance. [link] [comments] |
