Touchscreen and Dedicated graphics >$900? Posted: 14 Jul 2021 09:59 PM PDT LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE
Most important of these is performance and battery life. If I have to have it plugged in while gaming, that's fine, but I need it to last around 8 hours with casual use.
I run games like Minecraft, Slime Rancher, and The Sims occasionally.
Thanks so much for your help if you can find something :) I know it's a very tough laptop to find. [link] [comments] |
Thin and light for word processing and remote desktop Posted: 14 Jul 2021 09:12 PM PDT Hello! I am an incoming college student and I need a laptop to take with me to and from class. I would consider my request quite interesting as I do not care what the specs of the device are. My main use case is to remote desktop into my desktop sitting in the dorm. As long as it can stream video and use word processing software that's fine by me. All the horsepower I need will be streaming from my desktop. The only thing I care about is the quality of the device itself and how good it's display is. My initial thinking was to get a chromebook but I would strongly prefer to avoid something that has cheap build quality and a poor display. Those two qualities are of the utmost importance to me. I am very open to getting a chromebook if it meets the requirements though, I am just not to familiar with the options for those. The OS does not matter to me. I would strongly prefer something with an OLED panel. Bonus points if it has a high refresh rate but I understand that is unrealistic so it is not required. Budget
Are you open to refurbs/used?
How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
How important is weight and thinness to you?
Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. -Thank you for your time. I'm excited to see what you guys think I should do since this is quite a different request than normal. [link] [comments] |

Cheap laptops that can run photoshop? Posted: 15 Jul 2021 02:34 AM PDT Ideally below £500, it would on,y really need to run photoshop but I would probably use things like onenote on there too (I'm a college student for photography if that matters) [link] [comments] |

Questions for people who know alot about 17 inch laptops that are not heavy/chunky Posted: 14 Jul 2021 10:40 PM PDT If you don't care about gaming and you want 16:10 and no gloss/no glare, greater than 1080p then what would you look into? Ex: great for reading books, powerpoints, taking tests (that extra screen space and vertical space from 16:10!) Lg gram 17 looks nice, like enjoyable to pick it up, but glossy no? So does dell xps 17 but the no full sized USB looks scary. claims anti-glare, does it work? Anything else l should consider? [link] [comments] |

$1000 for programming/minimal gaming laptop for college Posted: 14 Jul 2021 01:51 PM PDT Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: Preferably 1000 USD, could stretch another 100-200 dollars if the deal is insanely good Are you open to refurbs/used? No How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Battery life>performance>buildquality>form factor How important is weight and thinness to you? Preferably under 4.5 lbs and relatively thin for portability (not beefy pls) Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Anywhere from 14''-15'' Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Going to be programming (IntelliJ, VMs, etc), Some gaming If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Genshin Impact and Valorant. Be able to play both are medium-high settings with at least 60 fps. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Need a decent keyboard since I'll be coding, solid build quality that doesn't feel flimsy Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I don't care for a high refresh rate screen, 60 hz is fine with me. If the screen is 16:10 or 3:2 that is a plus but not required. I want a GPU, but it doesn't have to be something beefy like a 3060 or even a 2060. Needs to be able to ship by September (since that's when school starts). Battery life needs to at least last 8 hours while web browsing/watch videos. I don't care if the speakers are good or not since I'll be using earbuds 90% of the time. Preferably at least a 512 gb ssd but if the rest of the laptop is good I can do with a 256. 16 gb ram would be nice since I'll be running multiple programs. Preferably not a gamer aesthetic. P.S. I've been having a hard time finding a suitable laptop because many of the laptops I see with a gpus are beefy and thick. I'm pretty flexible so if the laptop meets most of my requirements that'd be fine. [link] [comments] |

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I am leaning towards the Macbook M1 Air because of it's positive reviews, style, and simplicity. I've been using computers for 30 years (Mainly Linux and Windows) and I have never really owned a "premium" laptop and it definitely fits the bill. However I am open to other options. I would really like a screen with a very high resolution. 2k for anything less than 14" and 4k for higher. The best quality screen I can get for the money really. When I say "Nerd stuff" I like to tinker with software etc. Play with graphics, write scripts, test performance, play emulators, program arduino, 3d printer slicing, documentation, etc. Other computers I have heard of: MS Surface (too many options, confusing names, rubber keyboard?) Dell XPS 13 (worried the screen is too small?) Any suggestions very welcome! [link] [comments] |

Budget increased recently so now I can afford up to a $1,627usd laptop. Posted: 14 Jul 2021 11:15 PM PDT My budget is $1627 usd and I'm looking for a laptop with an rtx 3060, rtx 2060, or gtx 1660ti. I would like for it to have 6+ core processor. 16gb of ram and at least 512ssd. Battery life isn't really that important but preferably 3+. 15.6in+ screen size but wouldn't mind 14in. Decent screen. Great performance for gaming. Thats about all. Wish me luck because i have to learn 6 feet from the edge by creed on my guitar that my brother gave me for my dad to give me the money, and I'm not that good at playing. (Its basically my last birthday and Christmas present, but I still have to work to get it.) [link] [comments] |

Windows user considering switching to M1 Macbook Air for College Posted: 14 Jul 2021 09:38 AM PDT I will be starting college (Computer Science) this year and I was in the market for a lightweight, powerful laptop. After researching and dabbling among Windows machines for over 2 weeks, I've realised that the Macbook Air M1 is extremely powerful and also fits perfectly in my budget. I have forever used Windows. Do you recommend me buying the Air and switching to MacOS? Will I have any problems with regards to compatibility of apps? I will be using the laptop for browsing the internet, watching videos, programming, web development and some productivity apps. I've gone through the apps list at https://isapplesiliconready.com/ and almost everything looks covered except maybe Tensor Flow and only Rosetta 2 support for some apps. Also, I have heard that you can run Windows 10 on the MBA using a software called "Parallels" but it is paid. Is there any other such free software? Would I be able to play light games such as maybe Fortnite, Valorant, CS:GO, FIFA and Football Manager? Also, I know I shouldn't be asking this but how easy is it to find cracked software/games for the Mac? Is it as easy as Windows? Thanks a ton for all replies! [link] [comments] |

Laptops with no thermal throttling Posted: 14 Jul 2021 08:23 PM PDT I'm looking for a portable desktop replacement with latest RTX cards (3070 for example). It's okay if it's thick or heavy, as long as it comes with great cooling, e.g. Alienware Area 51. I don't want it to throttle at all and ideally want it to handle the cpu and gpu and their max clock speed under a sudtained load. Ryzen cpus are preferred. [link] [comments] |

~$1000 USD Laptop - MacBook Air M1 or Dell XPS for Physics Grad Student (+ Add-ons??) Posted: 14 Jul 2021 04:35 PM PDT Hello everyone, After 6 faithful years my Asus Zenbook needs to be retired. I just finished my Master's in Physics, and am hoping to start a PhD (which may include some (light) simulations) in the next few years. Deciding between laptops, I've come to the realization that the MacBook Air with M1 processor, and the Dell XPS are the two worthy competitors. Most of my research points at the MacBook Air, but I thought I'd ask here. Also, if I choose the Air, do I get 8 or 16 GB of RAM? Do I go for the 256 GB SSD or 512 GB? Too many questions...
Thanks so much! [link] [comments] |
