Is it a good idea to install linux on a brand new gaming laptop?

    Posted: 17 Jul 2021 01:34 AM PDT

I've been thinking of switching to linux but I was born and raised with windows, and my legion 5 is going to arrive in 2 weeks, but when I did some search, most videos said that linux would work better on an older laptop, and I would have to check for hardware compatability ect... Im not much of a tech wiz guy and Im having a hard time understanding some terms they use like distributions(distros).

    Technical Query

    Posted: 17 Jul 2021 11:33 AM PDT

    Hi Everyone.
This is a query related to installation of Ubuntu. I will be extremely grateful for a piece of advice.
I have two drives in my laptop: one SSD(C:\) and one HDD(D:\). The SSD contains windows OS. Now I wish to install Ubuntu on the HDD i.e., D:\ drive by partitioning and allocating it 100 gb out. I understand that if I do install Ubuntu, my grub menu will be replaced by Ubuntu's grub. But where will the boot file be placed? Will it be placed in HDD along with Ubuntu's 100gb partition. Or will it stay in my C:\ SSD?
I need to know this because, I want my laptop to at least boot windows in case my HDD fails. Despite having windows OS on C:\ drive, the laptop won't boot without boot file. So its imperative to have boot file in my SSD at all time. So is there a way to ascertain for sure where it is going to be placed post-installation of ubuntu?
    Thank you!

Should I put Linux on my chrome book?

    Posted: 17 Jul 2021 08:24 AM PDT

So I have a chrome book that is nearing the point of where it won't be supported anymore. I'm thinking about putting Linux on there to give it more life. I use it for a laptop on vacations (streaming movies/tv and looking up things to do) as well as a portable D&D character sheet. While playing I'll also check Facebook, Reddit, etc. while having the character sheet up.

I'm more tech savvy than being a complete noob. I am basically good at checking settings and googling a problem and finding the fix.

Are there things I should take into consideration? Will I be able to do more things than I'm thinking of? Is it worth it?

Thanks for any and all help

    Partition size change

    Posted: 17 Jul 2021 12:09 PM PDT

My new ext4 partition is changing its size depending on where it is mounted. If the mounting point is /mnt/sda2/, the size is 200G, while if the point is /run/media/ its size is 300GB.

Also, writing permission is only granted on /mnt/sda2.

Why is this happening and how can I get back those 100GB?

    Thanks

Dual booting with windows 10 on ssd and pop os on hdd . windows 10 is not detected by grub loader. need help

    Posted: 17 Jul 2021 04:18 AM PDT

    SOLVED(fix shared below)

okay so i installed pop os on my hard disk to dual boot with in my windows 10 (which is installed on the ssd) .i also installed grub on pop os following this tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wLOZfT0732Ybut the problem is that even now i cant see windows 10 in my grub loader .i think the problem is that windows 10 is on ssd and pop os is on hdd but idk how to fix it. can anyone help me with this?

    EDIT- FIX:

so i found out what was causing the problem and fixed it.

Here is the fix i used:

So i found out that the problem was that my SSD wasn't being detected by my Linux at all because the SATA configuration was set on RAID and for Linux to be able to detect it , it should set to AHCI.

This can be changed in the bios .

But before changing this in bios, u need to turn on safe mode on for windows.(to do so, follow the following steps)

    1. To log into windows , enter your bios and and changing the boot sequence to set windows boot manager to highest priority.
    2. Then after logging into your windows press win+R on your keyboard and then in the dialog box type 'msconfig'.
    3. It will open a window . In that window goto "boot" tab and enable safe-boot and click on apply. and restart
    4. Then enter your bios during restart and change the SATA mode to AHCI mode and save the settings and exit bios
    5. You will again boot into your windows but in safe mode.
    6. In the safe mode repeat step two again and this time disable safe-boot and click on apply and restart again

Now your SSD is detected by the Linux .

    - Now boot into Linux again through bios (by changing boot sequence again)

    - In the Linux , open grub customizer and let it detect and update the grub loader

    - Just to be in safer side, open terminal and type in 'sudo update-grub'

Now your grub loader will be able to detect windows as well and u can boot into your windows through grub loader.

Having troubles connecting to WiFi network with various Linux distros (Mint, Pop Os) on Acer laptop

    Posted: 17 Jul 2021 10:40 AM PDT

So I got a almost-new Acer Extensa 15 Laptop as a present with Windows 10 installed on it (all works well), and I wanted to wipe Windows 10 from it and installed Linux Mint Cinnamon 20.2 on it. After some tinkering with the BOOT menu (only has UEFI) and disabling RTS in the BOOT (switched SATA to AHCI), I managed to install Linux Mint Cinnamon on it.

However, I ran into issue that no matter what I do (installed all the updates, tried disabling secure boot, checked for drivers - no additional drivers were needed), I could not connect to my home WiFi; it wasn't even listed in the available networks, even though (!) other networks were showing and I could connect to my other WiFi network.

I also tried resetting my home modem and router, tried "connecting to a hidden WiFi network", but it didn't help.

All of my other devices can connect to this home network without problems. I even have another older Macbook Air laptop that has Linux Mint installed onto it, and it never had any such problems.

I also tried using live USB with Linux Mint xfce and later live USB with Pop OS on this laptop, but the same problem occurred, my home network didn't appear while every other network was listed. However, this problem does not occur on currently installed Windows 10 (all networks are listed).

I am still new to Linux and I am at a loss of what to do.

How do I fix an update-rc.d error?

    Posted: 17 Jul 2021 10:36 AM PDT

Hello everyone. Been trying to make a bash script run on command and when I input

    "sudo update-rc.d /etc/init.d/NetworkManager.sh"

    I get the following

"Use of uninitialized value $service in hash element at /usr/sbin/update-rc.d line 26, <DATA> line 45

update-rc.d: error: initscript does not exist: /etc/init.d//etc/init.d/NetworkManager.sh"

Why does it say that it doesn't exist? also, why does it repeat the /etc/init.d/ path twice? I tried running the command without a forward slash in the beginning of etc and I still got the same error.

Please help me, thanks in advance.

Will the HP Elitebook 640 G2 work with Ubuntu? Manjaro?

    Posted: 17 Jul 2021 12:58 PM PDT

I'm thinking about trying Ubuntu at first but also want to try Manjaro. If I get the same access to bleeding edge releases through virtualbox I might just do that from within Ubuntu. Or, this is probably a supernooby question but, will virtualbox cause the same problems if there are compatibility issues? But I am keen on having a Linux distro as my OS.

I can't find anything about this specific laptop but have noticed quite a few people having trouble with HP laptops but usually with people saying they eventually were able to make Ubuntu work.

I am on a tight budget and notice that laptops with the same specs with either Linux preinstalled or no OS cost more! So I'm stuck buying a Windows laptop. I know Lenovo is highly regarded but their selection seems pricey as well. I have settled on 12GB-16GB (ideally 16GB) RAM.

The best deal I could find so far is the HP Elitebook 640 G2 but finding any information on whether this particular model works with Ubuntu Manjaro or other Linux distros is proving impossible. Is it reliable enough to just assume that my experience will be similar to other HP models people have dealt with? I don't mind if I have to go through a lot of steps as long as I don't brick my computer and as long as I am able to get a Linux distro on my laptop though I'd prefer to be able to get Manjaro at least in Virtualbox if it turns out not to work as an OS.

Even googling the name of the laptop in quotes only returns 2 results! Out of quotes I get a lot on HP Elitebooks that aren't 640 or G2 and then there's this HP Probook 640 G2 which I assume is different.

I know thinkpads are highly recommended but I went to Lenovo's website and laptops with similar specs are too pricey.

Printers not working in Arch Linux

    Posted: 17 Jul 2021 12:04 PM PDT

My printer is getting detected through 'lsusb' command and the output displays both of my printers: ImageClass Canon MF4320d and HP Deskjet 1510. I configured both printers from Cups' web interface and both of their models were successfully configured. I've enabled cups.service through "systemctl enable cups" also. But when I try to print any image from the image viewer (gwen), the Printer doesn't even make a sound.

Help me replicate an arc theme

    Posted: 17 Jul 2021 08:04 AM PDT

Not sure if this is the right sub to ask.

So I recently switch to ubuntu and I'm loving it. I saw this post on r/unixporn and I wanna replicate it exactly the way it is. Unfortunately I'm pretty new to this and have been trying for about 2 days now. I've got everything working except for the arc theme.

I just can't seem to get the colors right. It probably doesn't help that I know nothing about CSS. Help would be greatly appreciated!

    Enabling Wi-Fi on Arch

    Posted: 16 Jul 2021 11:41 PM PDT

Noob here! I recently installed Linux on to my Laptop (no ethernet port) and can't figure out how to connect to wi-fi. So, if someone could explain to me how to do it in detail.

This site (https://www.debugpoint.com/2020/11/connect-wifi-terminal-linux/) was pretty clear on what to do and I almost fully understand it, but when I do device list it says that wlan0 isn't powered on, and when I do the station commands, it says wlan0 doesn't have any stations.

Edit: I just reinstalled Arch and now wlan0 is powered on, and I'm connected to wi-fi.

SSD + HDD setup Manjaro, I can't access to my HDD

    Posted: 17 Jul 2021 09:07 AM PDT

    Hello!

I looked around a lot of forums to resolve this problem but none of the solutions worked for me, that's why I want to ask help with this in person.

I'm very new to Linux, but after using Windows 10 for too long I decided to move to Linux. I know the basics but there are a few things that are not clear for me.

I chose Manjaro KDE, as I used KDE neon on my Laptop for a while. I'm very satisfied with it, only problem is, I can't make/move/delete directories from my HDD (as a normal user, of course I can do these as root from the terminal). I saw it may be a permission problem, but none of the solutions worked for me. It used to be a Dual Boot system with Windows 10, but I completely wiped everything from both the SSD and HDD, and started Linux as fresh. People on forums say that I have to boot into Windows to resolve the problem, but I don't have Windows installed anymore, as I formated both drives. The SSD is installed with the default settings, and It's working fine, I made the HDD ext4, because it was unallocated, and I couldn't see it in the file manager. Finally it's mounted and everything, still I can't use it.

I want to store my Steam games on the HDD, but Steam doesn't see it either.

Please someone help me with this, this problem looks so simple for me, yet it makes my computer very limited.

can anyone help me with this installation problem

    Posted: 17 Jul 2021 08:50 AM PDT

    Hey linux lovers,

so basically today i was trying to install ubuntu 21.04 using a usb pendrive, i've never used ubuntu or any other linux distro ever (i've used windows 10 so far but i want to switch to linux now), so i was trying to install ubuntu as normally people would, but this weird thing happens, when the installer is in the 3-4 step (i dont quite remember which step exactly it is) where i choose to install normally or minimally (i choose normal as anyone would), and other good stuff, then when i click next it should be showing like if i want to install it with a hardware format (i want to do the hardware formatting and do a clean installation), or like let ubuntu handle it, and other options, right? but in my case, im taken to the partition window directly, and also when it happens the partition window literally shows nothing like as if it cant detect my hard drive, and i really got confused at this (ive tried to install with another pendrive and the same problem still exists), can this be a problem regarding my bios (like i need to change some option), it would be really helpful if someone can help, thanks.

With deepest condolences and respects to the CentOS users out there, is RHEL Free a suitable distro for a beginner or beginner-intermediate?

    Posted: 17 Jul 2021 08:13 AM PDT

I didn't know if RHEL free was okay for a beginner or if it was kind of quirky and better left to experts. Also, I see a lot of Red Hat hate, should I stay away on principle maybe? What would be the best way to use an RPM package manager on a machine that I don't want to have to potentially roll back like with Fedora (or at least have less chance of doing so)?

I really don't need anything different than what I have now, but I think in my future using an OS that uses RPM in a non-rolling distro would be really nice.

Dual boot linux/windows 10 on my midrange laptop and now I can't run any games on the windows boot

    Posted: 17 Jul 2021 07:55 AM PDT

This is my first time using any linux distro (I went with garuda linux), after i finished installing i did basic setup stuff in the linux boot, no issues there, but when I went to go play league on the windows boot, it crashes before i can load into a match. I am almost 100% sure it is just because i only have 8gb of ram, if this is the case, does anyone know any lighter distro I could use, if not, does anyone know the reason?

    Also, these are my specs:
Ryzen 5 3500U w/ Radeon Vega Mobile Gfx 2.1 GHz
    8 GB of DDR4 ram
    256 gb m.2
