Why is manual partitioning preferred Posted: 31 Jul 2021 09:52 AM PDT In most tutorials I've seen they usually use the manual method. Is it in anyway better for dual booting? Or is it because the person will know how the drive is partitioned? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jul 2021 05:54 AM PDT Ive been using linux for about 6 months now, and on my old laptop i had no need for sth like that, but ive recently got a new laptop with i5 and nvidia gtx 1650. I forgot how "well" nvidia works with linux and ive noticed my laptops fans not really doing much and temperatures were as high as 90, and my laptop even shut down once from heat i assume. Ive tried using greenwithenvy but it doesnt seem to be doing much On windows id use armoury crate to control fan speed but that doesnt exist on linux obviously, so i need some help here as i dont want this laptop to break within the year of me using it and i definitely do not want to wipe manjaro for (shudder) windows, and dualbooting isnt really an option anymore (since windows apparently doesnt work if linux is installed before it on the same drive from what ive heard) Any help would be appreciated Btw i am on manjaro (not because of arch, i just needed to install kernel 5.13 for the wifi card driver to work and manjaro was easiest to do that on) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jul 2021 11:39 AM PDT I have this weird error showing up when booting, the system works just fine, but still, the error always shows up at every bootup. I have ran Im dualbooting Windows and Manjaro, and I think the problem may have something to do with some weird old Ubuntu boot entries showing up on the bios boot menu, and as you can see in the screenshot, in [link] [comments] |
What is secure boot and fast boot? Posted: 31 Jul 2021 11:21 AM PDT Do i need to disable them while dual booting? also i will be upgrading my laptop to windows 11 when the update arrives. I will need to enable secure boot at that time. Will it affect my linux partitions and GRUB in anyway? [link] [comments] |
I can’t create a “xorg.conf” file in my X11 folder. Says access is denied. What should I do? Posted: 31 Jul 2021 07:46 AM PDT Trying to make Linux use my dedicated GPU and was told I need to edit the xorg file. Turned out I don't have one and I can't create one. What should I do? I'm using Debian stable. [link] [comments] |

What are repos and how does downloading/installing from them work? Posted: 31 Jul 2021 09:16 AM PDT Its been quite a while since i switched to Ubuntu and now i wanna know as much possible about the system. I just know sudo apt install/upgrade and it pretty much works for my uses but can someone tell me how the hell does this command work? How to use lightly shaders in KDE Posted: 31 Jul 2021 11:03 AM PDT See title. I am using Manjaro KDE. I have them installed, but how do I configure or launch them? I already have the lightly application style installed. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jul 2021 02:17 PM PDT I've built PCs for a long time, but I've always done this through Windows 10. I have no idea how I'm going to handle the few drivers I have installed already, and I've heard that the motherboard (Gigabyte AB 350 Gaming 3) has some issues with Ubuntu. How do I go about making a hardware change as painless as possible in Ubuntu 20.04? [link] [comments] |

How do I tell if fail2ban is working at all? Posted: 30 Jul 2021 05:17 PM PDT OS: Ubuntu Server 20.04 LTS I'm following this documentation https://jellyfin.org/docs/general/networking/fail2ban.html?q=fail2ban My Jellyfin is running inside a docker container via docker-compose. According to the documentation, I have to know where my log files are which isn't the default "/var/log/jellyfin/jellyfin*.log", but in "/home/[myuser]/jellyfin/config/log/log_[Ithinkthesearedates].log" (this directory contains three log files). So my jellyfin.local file looks like this: So I run I get Does that "1 missed" mean fail2ban is working? Is something like Caddy perhaps causing issues with it? How would I get it working if it isn't? I legitimately cannot find a site or anything that explains in layman's terms how to interpret the results of fail2ban-regex so I can't even understand if I'm doing something wrong or right. The documentation provided by Jellyfin isn't very clear as to what results to look out for either. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 31 Jul 2021 06:27 AM PDT So I wanted to make a win10 and Pop_OS! dual boot. At first I made a win10 and Ubuntu dual boot and it worked and I had the menu at startup. Then I uninstalled Ubuntu and installed Pop_OS! and I don't have that menu anymore. Every time the laptop restarts or starts up, it goes straight to Pop_OS!. For extra context: When I go into BIOS, I still have the option to boot into Ubuntu but it just brings me into that basic input/output thing than Linux has. I don't think I uninstalled it correctly, did not have any problems or data loss tho. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jul 2021 01:01 AM PDT Hello fellow redditers. I'm looking for Pulseaudio/Alsa alternatives because it's giving me headaches. The main reason is that I'm having hard time configuring system-wide equaliser. On Manjaro it was relatively easy to set it up and use it, but I had to install Linux Mint on an underpowered 2-in-1 laptop and PulseEffects is PINTA. If there are any alternatives which are they and do I have to get rid of Pulseaudio/Alsa before installing it/them? Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Linux on Zephyrus G14 (GNOME 40 + Wayland) Posted: 31 Jul 2021 12:16 PM PDT Hi, I'm trying to permanently move from Windows to GNU/Linux, since I've tested the windows 11 preview and I found several performance issues (while unplugged) and reduced battery life vs Windows 10 (I think because of the new animations). I already tried sometimes to swap the system with really good initial impressions of gnome 40 on Fedora 34 since I'm used to multi-touch gestures and they worked as smooth as the Mac animations with great battery life. But after installing the nvidia driver the gnome session becomes x11 and it looses the multi-touch gestures capability. So, can someone guide me to install properly the nvidia 470 drivers? so I can use the wayland session and my RTX 2060 cuda acceleration at the same time, please. The software that I use for my work is cross platform so I don't have any issues moving but this. Thank you in advance. [link] [comments] |
Manjaro Install Alongside Gives Error Posted: 31 Jul 2021 03:12 AM PDT Hello guys, I want to install KDE Manjaro (manjaro-kde-21.0.7-210614-linux510) alongside Windows 10 but i get the error showing in the picture. Using a UEFI bios. It cannot resize the partition it seems like. I disabled secure boot and fast startup. What can i do to fix this? I'm a complete noob and would love to use Manjaro without issues. For those who can't read the text here it is: The installer failed to resize partition /dev/nvme0n1p4 on disk 'CT1000P1SSD8'. Shrink partition /dev/nvme0n1p4' from 930.36 GiB to 819.05 GiB Job: Check file system on partition /dev/nvmeOn1p4"Checking partition /dev/nvme0n1p4 before resize/move failed. Also tried doing a manual install but then i won't get a grub boot loader to select manjaro with. Any suggestions? [link] [comments] |

Should I continue using windows or use linux on my old craptop? Posted: 31 Jul 2021 01:32 AM PDT I got an ASUS Vivobook X540SA BPD0602V, Pentium N3700, 4GB RAM, and 500GB HDD and after a windows update in 2018, this laptop performed like crap. I put up with it until 2019 when I added a core i5 650 to my dead PC and that shit booted up. Now in 2020, the PC died again, and the laptop STILL performs like crap. Now I have a MacBook Air (M1) as my primary device and have this older laptop lying around. What should I do with it? Try to improve the windows experience or install Linux Mint/ Ubuntu right away? Which other distros should I take a look at? Remember, this won't be my primary device, and all I do with it now is some light GeForce Now gaming and watch videos on it, and use some MS Excel on the Asus. I also use an external monitor when I'm playing on GFN. Also, what are some Linux beginner tips you would recommend? [link] [comments] |
