Don't be in hurry on Linux

    Posted: 01 Jul 2021 04:24 AM PDT

Yes, after many years of experience, instead of typing: sudo rm -rf ./*

I typed: sudo rm -rf /*

Don't be in hurry guys when you are typing because I just destroyed my whole server...

[EDIT] I had a full backup but I lost many hours to restore it

Isolating taskbar icons on the workspace?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2021 05:14 PM PDT

Okay, so since 2017 when I heard Linux had workspaces, I barely used them because to me, the main purpose I would need is to have the icons not appearing on the taskbar. And because I never could phrase it right, I never found how to config it.

So imagine my surprise on accidentally trying workspaces on a random windows 10 and that is exactly what I wanted (blimey that is not a sentence you use very often).

I'm using Zorin Core's Gnome. Is there an extesion for this or should I move to another one like plama?

Or at least how should i google this?

    Thanks for your time

    Bluetooth speaker connection issue

    Posted: 01 Jul 2021 01:52 PM PDT

Hi, I am using dell 10th gen core i5 laptop and installed debian 11 bullseye. Everything is going fine except my JBL Clip-3 bluetooth speaker connects with my laptop but after few seconds the device disconnects, then reconnects again. So some kind of loop it's in, my speaker produces sounds and after few seconds my speaker stops producing sounds and reconnects again. Is there any fix that my bluetooth speaker wouldn't disconnect time to time and yes, my speaker is fine as I have tried with other computers, it works fine.

    ssh and background processes

    Posted: 01 Jul 2021 05:53 PM PDT

Just lost a bet. I told a co-worker that if he ssh'ed to a server ran a process on the background with & and then logged out of the server the process would die. To my surprise we did just that and when we came back to the server and did a ps -eaf | grep processName it was still there, running without an issue. How is this possible? It's centos 7 btw

If I were to switch to Linux, I'd be such a casual user...is it even worth it?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2021 05:51 PM PDT

I've been considering throwing either Mint or Ubuntu on my laptop, which I only use for occasional browsing and VERY rarely 3D modeling. I know that I'd lose the nicely integrated OneDrive and Microsoft Edge (both of which I use a bunch), but I really like how the Linux desktop environments look compared to Windows. It would be much more of a "for fun" device. I wouldn't be coding. I wouldn't really be using any of the software on it. I'd just be using Firefox (or Edge, if it works).

Is it still worth it? It looks so pretty, but I don't know if I'd gain anything, and I'd lose a bit as well.

    Posted: 01 Jul 2021 03:56 PM PDT

I can't access internet because I need to install a package that need some packages. I tried to install build-essential with its dependencies, but the damn package has a tons of dependencies that seems to depend on each other... is there a place where I could download all the dependencies?

Edit: Ubuntu 20.04, I have an asus ASRock B550M which apparently requires the driver Realtek 8125

Can WoW still snoop throughyour system, if you are using Linux?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2021 03:02 PM PDT

I saw on a new blizzard terms that they plan to snoop through your system. I switched to linux, is it still able to do it considering Linux being different from windows?

Also speaking of Windows games, I noticed people saying that most of the time when security isn't the best is when youre using Wine. Is that the same with Proton? And could I possibly make another partition to fight that?

    Who is owner http?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2021 02:59 PM PDT

EDIT: Title should have been Who is user http

I am running Manjaro and I have a project in /srv/http/. The project is purely php and html. I use apache server. I use it to send files easily to my laptop from my phone[iPhone]. Whenever I'm creating a new project I create the folder in let say Documents and then move it to the http folder so that I am the owner of the folder. Back story aside...

Whenever I upload files to the root project directory, be it from my phone or laptop itself, the owner of the files is a user named http. I mostly upload images and can't edit them due to this.

I looked online and can't find much info. Is owner http the apache server? And what might I have done wrong when creating my project folders such that my current user does not have the permissions to these files yet has permissions to read/write to the directory?

More info: Owner of the project folder is my current user and can view & modify content

    Question about WM

    Posted: 01 Jul 2021 05:13 AM PDT

So after browsing thru r/unixporn, I fell in love with how people were ricing their distros but the problem being that most of them are using Arch which is not ideal for a beginner like me who has used Linux Mint Cinnamon for 2 weeks. I was wondering if all the posts I see can be done on mint? Especially this one, I really like this and would like to know if it possible to reproduce it on Mint?

    Thanks <3

Panda PAU05 WiFi Adapter crashes Ubuntu and prevents boot

    Posted: 01 Jul 2021 02:47 PM PDT

Hi, I'm super frustrated. I have Ubuntu 21.04 on a 128gb Samsung flash drive. I bought the panda PAU05 because my Lenovo laptop's WiFi will not work with Linux currently, and bought the PAU05 WiFi usb to fix that. However whenever I go to boot Ubuntu with the PAU05 it gives me a super weird error of "VMX (outside TXT) disabled by BIOS" as well as "No SPROM available".

This is crazy to me considering it's supposed to be plug and play. Does anyone have any insight?

    Nothing on Monitors

    Posted: 01 Jul 2021 02:46 PM PDT

I know this is long, but I'm trying to provide all the info I can.

I installed Ubuntu 20.04 last night on my Win10 desktop machine (home-built about five years ago, Intel 4690K, Nvidia GTX970). I installed Ubuntu on a separate SSD from Windows. It went fairly well. I've been dabbling with it today making tweaks and adjustments.

I have three monitors that work fine with Windows. Zero problems. I have a second Win10 box (work) that I also have connected to the same three monitors. Also no problems.

In case it might matter, my left and right monitors each have two separate inputs (one from each PC); I use the monitor buttons to select the desired input. My center monitor has one HDMI input and I use an HDMI switch to flip between work PC, home PC, and PS4.

Since I installed Ubuntu I was only getting it to show up on the left and right monitors (and I turned off the left display for a while through the Ubuntu display settings), but I didn't mess with it since I had my work maching displaying on the middle and sometimes left. It was working fine that way. But once my work day was over, I pulled up the Nvidia application and clicked my HDMI switch so my middle monitor would display the Ubuntu screen, but all the screens went black. The only way to get it back was to reboot AFTER flipping my HDMI switch back to my other input. But now even that doesn't address the problem. I simply can't get anything from Ubuntu to display on any monitor. I booted into Win10 and all three monitors work normally.

When booting, GRUB shows up on the left monitor (called #2 in Ubuntu). No problem. But when I kick off Ubuntu, the middle and right screens receive no input and go to sleep, while the left monitor has a gray screen with nothing on it. No keyboard action I've tried does anything, although I'm hesitant to try much since I can't see what I'm doing with no display.

I tried bypassing the HDMI switch and connecting the home PC directly to the middle monitor's HDMI port, but that didn't change anything.

Obviously I can't post any data or screenshots. I'm fine with reinstalling Ubuntu since I hadn't really done much with it, but I don't really see how that would help.

Any thoughts or direction I should go with this?

Update I was able to get it back to the configuration where the left and right monitors work with Ubuntu by making the middle monitor display my work PC. Far from ideal, but all least I can try things now. I can access both display settings and Nvidia X Server Settings, if that helps.

So what's the actual problem, you're probably asking? I can't get my middle monitor to be recognized by Ubuntu, and flipping the HDMI switch (which controls the middle monitor's input) borks everything.

Need Info regarding running VBA scripts in MS Excel on Wine

    Posted: 01 Jul 2021 01:45 PM PDT

As the title says, I want to know if anyone had success running VBA(Visual Basic for Applications) scripts in excel on wine or playonlinux or something similar to those.

I'd love to switch to manjaro xfce (for latest software) or mint xfce (fallback). xfce as I wouldn't tinker a lot, at least not for a couple months of linux experience :-P .

My brother is willing to make the switch too but his day job deals with excel and windows 10 updates are slowing down his laptop. gradually. The deciding factor to get him to switch to linux is ms excel and its vba.

I read about using virtualbox or qemu to run windows with office but that's not an option as we don't have much RAM. I've seen several people mentioning that they had success with excel on wine and some youtube videos to go with that but I couldn't find anything solid about VBA's compatibility with excel on wine.

    Appreciate any input. Thanks.

I would really need a hand right now.

While installing Pop OS i managed to format my usb as MBR.. it's read only, MBR and I cannot do anything to get it to work. Take a look please:

Trying to use Rufus on it fails

    Cannot partition, nor change letter

At this point I am clueless on what to do, I just need to use my computer. Can anyone point me in any direction? Thank you

Some native linux games lauch but without a window.

    Posted: 01 Jul 2021 01:10 PM PDT

I'm using arch linux with xmonad and when I open some games with a native linux version (stardew valley, tabletop simulator, osu!Lazer) it appears as if the game opens but there is no window displaying the game, (tabletop simulator and osu!Lazer have sound while stardew valley doesnt)

Initially stardew valley wouldnt even open, i searched through steam forums and a solution was to set TERM=xterm, when i do that (with xterm installed) it opens but in the same way as the other two games (no image).

When i run tabletop simulator and osu!Lazer through the terminal they show no output, stardew valley shows the following:

Please use SDL 2.0.5 or higher. NoFpsCap: This feature is not available setGameMode( 'titleScreenGameMode (0)' ) loadPreferences(); begin - languageCode=en savePreferences(); async=False, languageCode=en [S_API] SteamAPI_Init(): Loaded '/home/yv/.local/share/Steam/linux64/steamclient.so' OK. Setting breakpad minidump AppID = 413150 Steam_SetMinidumpSteamID: Caching Steam ID: {it shows an id but i think my id shouldnt be shared} [API loaded no] Steam logged on: True Initializing GalaxySDK Requesting Steam app ticket loadPreferences(); begin - languageCode=en savePreferences(); async=False, languageCode=en Window_ClientSizeChanged(); Window.ClientBounds={X:1440 Y:0 Width:1920 Height:1080} zsh: terminated ./StardewValley

My GPU is a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, my CPU is a Intel i7-7700 (8) @ 4.200GHz. I do have nvidia drivers installed.

    $ pacman -Q | grep nvidia lib32-nvidia-utils 465.31-1 nvidia 465.31-12 nvidia-settings 465.31-1 nvidia-utils 465.31-1

Stardew Valley worked when i used steam proton, but i would still like to solve this issue, because if there is a linux version i would rather use that, and osu!Lazer isnt on steam, so i wouldnt know how to set it up.

    Help would be greatly apreciated.

Python, terminal, and system tray oh my

    Posted: 01 Jul 2021 01:04 PM PDT

To get the proper function out of my huion tablet on Linux I need to run a python script. Being fairly new Linux I was wondering if there was a way to start the script in terminal/console and then minimize it to system tray. Or is there a way the just start the python script on login and have it run in the background?

    Thanks

Speakers emit no sound through DP

    Posted: 01 Jul 2021 12:19 PM PDT

Hey! First time poster, hope it's the right place to ask.

I'm on Ubuntu 20.04. When I connect my DP cable from my graphics card (R9 280) to my Monitor (LG 32UD99-W), I do not get any sound from the speakers. When I connect a Windows laptop however through the same DP cable, it works fine. Do note that when I plug in earphones into the front or back of my computer, the earphones work fine.

I've played around with Pavucontrol and Alsamixer, and I haven't been able to make any sound play through it. Here are the results of the pacmd ls-cards command if that helps. Though I would imagine the profile selected currently is the correct one.

I've even got the HDMI output showing up, and when I set it to be the main output, I can play some audio and the bar goes up and down signifying that there's sound output, but the speakers emit none of it.

    Slow mo scrolling

    Posted: 01 Jul 2021 05:40 AM PDT

Since I switched to Linux my pc felt new.

    But one thing is annoying.

When I scroll in most windows it's in slow motion and even though games load faster performance is really bad.

In windows those two things are better but I prefer making linux my permanent os.

And it's mostly from my GPU. It's an ati ES1000.

Why is this problem not on windows and how can I fix it.

Will Ubuntu GNOME wolk well on an old intel i3 laptop with 3GB of RAM or should i choose other distros like lubuntu for my laptop?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2021 07:44 AM PDT

    I havent used Linux before.

Tbh i rarely used my laptop coz the phone was more than enough for most of my school related tasks. However, now im willing to use it for online classes.

Had to replace the screen coz part of it was damaged and......upgraded it to windows 10 from windows 7, which i now regret coz it lags like hell. Heard a lot of positive things about linux, so wanted to give it a shot.

Advice on partitioning multiple NVMe drives during Fedora 34 installation, featuring btrfs & hardware encryption

    Posted: 01 Jul 2021 11:15 AM PDT

I just built a PC and have decided to go with Fedora 34.

In late 2020, I installed Manjaro on my now-previous PC, and I split the storage across two drives like so, with /boot/efi, /, and linux-swap on the smaller, faster SSD and /home on the larger, slower HDD:

I had intended on doing the same on this new PC, but I noticed that, if I let the Fedora installer do its own thing, it'll spread /home and / across both my NVMe drives (Kingston A2000, 500 GB + 1000 GB), like so:

    So, my questions are:

    1. Do you recommend just leaving it like this, and going with the installer's recommended setup?
    2. If I use the installer's recommended setup, how does that affect things if a drive fails, or performs differently?
    3. Alternatively, in an attempt to mimic my Manjaro setup, do you recommend making it so /boot/efi, /boot, and / are on the 500 GB drive, and /home is on the 1000 GB, while preserving the "Device Type", "Volume", and "File System" chosen by the installer?
    4. If I were to do it this way, I assume I'd then have two separate btrfs partitions for / and /home, as opposed to a single volume for both, since they'd now be on separate drives instead of sharing both drives?
    5. How might doing it one way or the other affect my ability to use SEDutil to enable OPAL 2.0 hardware encryption on both drives, with volumes & partitions spread across them?

This will be my first time using btrfs, SEDutil, in case that matters.

Any and all help you can provide is appreciated! Thanks.
