Denied promotion, but brand new employee got the spot. Is this normal? Posted: 16 Jul 2021 07:07 AM PDT Now, first things first, the promotion is literally nothing. No additional work, a 1-2% raise, and a title change. The job descriptions are word for word the exact same...I know they are because I save every job description when I apply for a job, and I saw the job listing for the new position and they were the same. Anyways, it's been a few months so I'm over the initial pissed off stage about it, but I've been working my ass off for 2.5 years at this company, extremely small IT dept with only 3 in my site. Co-worker left, I put my name in the hat, and I was denied because I "didn't work on enough projects" (my manager explicitly told me every month to not work on projects, I shit you not. I worked on them in my free time instead). Anyways, position got filled by an outside employee with more experience on paper, but he's god awful and doesn't do diddly shit, meanwhile I'm STILL working on projects and am on 3 additional admin units (where the new guy AND my manager are on none for dev/prod type stuff) and I'm just getting crapped on left and right. I'm leaving in a few months, but was wondering what the point is? Is this just a company that doesn't give a shit about their employees and prefers high turnover? Is there some specific reason to actually do this? I just want to know so I can look for signs in the future because this is utter bullshit and I have made numerous attempts to move up while be squashed for no reason. [link] [comments] |
Just got hired for my first job in the IT industry. Posted: 15 Jul 2021 06:12 PM PDT Well I didn't expect this to happen today. I just accepted my first position as a Help Desk Analyst. It's a contract to hire position that is 100% remote. I initially didn't want to consider the role because the pay is so low but I am at the point where I have to get experience somewhere and it's been three years since I've had a legitimate "job". I have very low expectations for the job and will hopefully be on to something else on the next six months to a year but am pretty excited to be starting my career. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 16 Jul 2021 07:39 AM PDT Because if it's the latter then I guess I'll need to take a couple of MS-oriented courses as part of my associate's in networking. Thanks [link] [comments] |
What is a good answer for “what is your trouble shooting process?”. Posted: 16 Jul 2021 06:30 AM PDT I was asked this in an entry level position interview. It wasn't asked like "in this situation what is your trouble shooting process " but a very generic and broad question. [link] [comments] |
Help Desk to Jr. Cloud Engineer, where to start learning? Posted: 16 Jul 2021 06:04 AM PDT I currently work as a Help Desk Technician at a large company and enjoy the work. I am on a 6 month contract and hoping to have an idea of where/id like to specialize by the end of it. I am very interested in getting into cloud work. I do not know where to start. Any help and direction would be appreciated :) [link] [comments] |
Time to move on? A junior is getting half my job and I'm getting....nothing! Posted: 16 Jul 2021 09:37 AM PDT Found out a week ago that our department is getting a new first line helpdesk person. The existing helpdesk is being bumped up to sit between me and the new person (I'm 3rd line support). To keep the existing person fully employed a chunk of the work I do will have to be given to the person that is being bumped up. There is no 2nd line vacancy as such we just don't have the work load. That sort of leaves me wondering what there is left for me to do. We are not even that busy. It feels like I'm being stripped of duties in the hope I'll just walk. I've already had a lot of work I used to do taken off my hands by the IT manager and over the last few months an increasing lack of interest from them in the work I do. There has been no formal discussion with me yet, it was just told to me over the phone that some of my work will be moved to the other guy. I've been there five years and it's a good place to work, but I feel that change is coming and they don't want me around. My gut is telling me they are looking to up-skill the existing guy as much as they can and then give me the push. [link] [comments] |
IT Certification! I feel the recruiter doesn t even care about that! Posted: 16 Jul 2021 05:22 AM PDT I am based in UK, already gain my A+ and Security+ and now concentrate on CCNA. I ve applied to a lot of Helpdesk position and entry level role everytime been refused, is ok no experience i understand. Probably just CCNA is a more serious cert which teach you something the other 2 is in my opinion loosing time. Even if i take CCNA, CCNP CYSA+ or CISSP who gonna give you a job without experience and even the chance to start. Thinking for an apprentiship at the moment, wherever if you want to start analyze first what job you want to do, the requirments to do, how many jobs are available if they are in demand otherwise you can spend a lot of time studying for nothing! Network cable installer wanting to get more on the IT side Posted: 16 Jul 2021 09:57 AM PDT I've been running, terminating, testing network cable for the past 6+ years. Along with building out MDF/IDF's, installing cable pathways/trays. I'm currently studying for the network+ and ccna certifications. My question is, with the cabling experience I have help me at all get a job in IT? I know once I have the certs it'll open doors but just curious if anyone else have went this same path. Looking for advice on career direction, is ITIL change/ major incident good enough to reach the top Posted: 16 Jul 2021 06:11 AM PDT Hi, Got my first full time job after uni in a small/mid level msp as a level 1- thought it was level 1, but with smaller companies its more of a do what you can until you can't. Then on to the next person. Got a senior role after 4 months, i thought everyone else was going to be like me but they had little interest in doing what they considered extra stuff About 3 months after that they started looking to move someone into the tier 3 team. I applied and got it, then our change manager quit, along with a bunch of the other service desk guys. They asked if i could take over his role and also do training for the service desk. So i accepted, and it has been about 3 months in the job. The change process is pretty settled, and i spend alot of my time helping our new guys figuring stuff out 9/10 of them have less than a year of experience and 3/10 have been here less than 3 months. I guess the question is what is the career progression like for people in itil change and "trainers"? Should i make sure i have more technical experience, before i move into more managerial roles? I'm having a mixed feeling about my current situation Posted: 16 Jul 2021 05:49 AM PDT Ok, I graduated in 2020 and I was searching for a front end developer job I got to the final round and was rejected in 4 companies, I was just feeling hopeless and decided to apply for pretty much any openings and I did get a job as technical support in a decent company, now on one hand I am happy that I'm no longer unemployed anymore, I was just feeling so hopeless, worried and even suicidal thinking I'll never get any job but that feeling is gone now on the other hand I've been searching on the internet and I've read that a job as a technical support will look bad on my resume and is just a very bad choice overall some even said it's a "carrier killer", I was thinking of maybe getting a+ and ccna certification while I'm working and maybe search for a job as network engineer after that but I'm feeling very unsure after reading about this role on the internet. Is it true ? Also there's developer positions in this company so I thought maybe in future I could try for this role, I'm not sure weather I made a good choice or not. [link] [comments] |
Smart questions to ask interviewer for an entry level Cyber Security position Posted: 16 Jul 2021 05:29 AM PDT I have a 1st round WebEx interview coming up for an entry level cyber security analyst position. I always struggle with the part where I am suppose to ask questions, I just ask the generic "What is the most challenging aspect of this position" or "What technology stack do you use". I would appreciate if anybody here has any ideas about smart questions to ask that would make me stand out as a candidate. Thanks, [link] [comments] |
What’s out there in the field, and where should I go from here? Posted: 16 Jul 2021 09:12 AM PDT Hello all. I'm working as a network support specialist for a school district. I don't have certs, graduated with an A.S. in CIS. I started to pursue a 4-year in Networking/Cybersec, but ended up dropping it due to some crazy life events taking up my mental capacity. My job is solid, reliable, and pays well compared to what I used to do, but I'm starting to wonder if I want to do more in order to reach other goals in my life. The issue is that my education left me a bit disenfranchised with the field itself. I lost a lot of excitement for it. I didn't find much inspiration, and don't have any real motivation to continue school other than the potential for better earning to support my goals, though I do greatly enjoy learning. I'm curious what more specific careers are out there that pay well in the IT world, that maybe I don't have on my radar. I enjoyed networking and hardware work the most. Despised forensics, cryptography, and programming. Unfortunately, it seems like the money is mostly in software work. Also, would it be more valuable to start earning my certs, or go back and finish my 4-year? School isn't hard. Just relatively boring, and I disliked my cohort. I'm aware that working a job purely for money isn't the way to go, but it's a big part of my efforts towards my personal goals. I certainly want to avoid being undervalued. There's no real openings for advancement in my current position. I'd have to move to the city, or relocate. I'm not super interested in a long term career unless I find something I really love to do, relatively speaking. I appreciate your time, and any response. I know this is vague, but I'm just starting to think about it. [link] [comments] |
I know SQL and I want to become a database developer or something similar Posted: 16 Jul 2021 09:08 AM PDT Hello! I am now working as a financial controller (working a lot with Excel) and I start learning SQL and PL/SQL to get admited to a Database Master Degree (where I have big chances to get it) and I plan to search for an IT job after the 1st semester (which is at the end of the year) so I have 6 months to understand what are the possible jobs to apply to and what I should learn in the meantime to make sure I make a good impression and show that I know what I'm getting into so I'll get the best job a junior can get. If you are working with SQL or databases, what else did you learn besides and what do you have to do at work? Thank you [link] [comments] |
How can some different entry-level certs help me (like the Network+ and A+)? Posted: 16 Jul 2021 08:04 AM PDT Background first because I think it is necessary: I have been homelabbing since I was around 12, and in that time learnt about clustering and HCI with Ceph, setup a fair few network topologies like CGNAT as well as setting up L3 switches. Now I am 15, I've started looking into certifications as I think they will really help me in my career when I grow older. I just wanted to ask about a few exams. Firstly, I have started revising and writing notes (around 40 pages so far) for the Network+, as it is an exam I can afford to take. How long should I revise for this exam? Also, is the A+ a good option after this, or would it be redundant as I already will have the Network+? Lastly (sorry for the amount of questions), would the CCNA be good to go for after this? I have started with Cisco Packet Tracer getting comfortable for IOS, but would it be extremely hard for me to do? Thank you so much for all your help [link] [comments] |
AZ-900 with no previous certs and a basic roadmap for entry level Posted: 16 Jul 2021 02:20 AM PDT I subscribed for the Microsoft Azure Virtual Training Day: Fundamentals, which grants a free voucher for the AZ-900, but I have yet to take the entry level certs. Should I spend time pursuing AZ-900? I'm a 31 y/o male with experience with Customer Service and Support in a fintech, so my soft skills and troubleshooting are on point. Just enrolled in a Computer Science grad too, thought about getting the following certs:
The reason for Google IT is because both the Comptia A+ will cost me €418 while the Google IT can be studied with an alt account and then rushed in the 7-day free trial. I know, it doesn't have the weight A+ have, but money is a factor here (just had a baby right after buying my house...). I thought about the basic A+/Net+/Sec+ trifecta, but going Google/CCNA/Sec+ is cheaper. Besides, between Net+ and CCNA, the latter is more sought after where I live. So, going back to my first question after all this mumbling, is it a good idead to take the AZ-900 right now? [link] [comments] |

My very first IT Job ( Just got hired, will be starting n August ) Posted: 16 Jul 2021 09:52 AM PDT I am very excited to announce that I have got my very first job as an Help Desk after listing to advice from here. From my experience Resume was the key and so was cover letter. Based on the job requirements, I would make changes. Over 200 applications were sent out and heard from 10 companies. Only 3 companies did third round of interview and was selected by 1. It was very exiting when I heard they want me to start soon. Little backstory: I went to school for CS but didn't really enjoyed programming. Due to some family and personal issue, I was eventually dismissed from my university. Took a semester off and started at county college once again. Worked hard and took all the classes I needed. Worked full time ( retail job )and took classes at evening. After 2 years, I was still having hard time finding a school who will accept me ( due to my past record ). Finally gave up and attended Wilmington University ( yup I know it's not the best choice ). I still be graduating this august. Never give up and work towards your goal. During interview be relaxes and if you don't know something say it. Don't lie about it. Most of all keep on applying. Given the pay is low, but it is the first position and all about building that experience and the resume. Thankyou for this sub and advise offered by the members. [link] [comments] |
Trying to figure out the best next step for my career Posted: 16 Jul 2021 09:38 AM PDT Just recently moved to the South from the North-East, and searching for a new job. 6 years experience in a 3 different support roles, but looking to further develop my knowledge (I don't want to be support forever). I worked with a recruiter on job 1, and applied to job 2 myself; interviewed for both but have reservations for each. Job 1: (Offer was made for 53K)
Job 2: (Offer was not made yet, but range $42,598.40 - $66,788.80)
Reservations with Job 1: the organization is super small. The current tech I would be replacing appears to be leaving for a better opportunity (lack of growth), has a wealth of infrastructure, and scripting experience that I don't have. This would be a super steep learning curve for me; position was also changed from FT to contract to hire after interview (I was told, that it will be a contact until they find someone permanent (also concerned that I may get burned at the end of 3 months)). They have a solo sysadmin I'd be working with who lives in a different state who I did not meet (hoping he's not a prick). Training seemed to kind of be up in the air, and no SME for projects that require one. Reservations with Job 2: big organization, but concern for silos of knowledge, and being pigeon holed in to only break-fix. They don't appear to have any standards of knowledge (they have documentation to uphold current knowledge, but nothing to further develop within the role or before moving to a new role). If I'm not able to land a new role after a certain amount of time, being desktop support can get old quickly. I currently have a time-table that I would potentially only be in this state for 2 years (staying longer is a potential), but I want to prepare myself to have better opportunities if I have to move again. Just looking for opinions and making sure my thinking is not too radical. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
What's it like working for a fortune 500 company vs a non-fortune 500 company? Posted: 16 Jul 2021 09:29 AM PDT What was your role? What has your experience been like? What were some of the benefits of working for a Fortune 500 company? Any cons? Edit: Also, tell me your experience working for a tech company vs a non-tech company! [link] [comments] |
How to make a jump from Desktop Support into Junior System Admin ? Posted: 16 Jul 2021 09:14 AM PDT I'm currently employed at MSP with roughly 230-ish people. I work as a Desktop Support (That's my official title) traveling around and supporting multiple clients on their sites. I'm at the point in my career where I'm exhausted my role to a thin blood and there is not much to learn or expand my skills sets within this role anymore as I have been doing this for the past 4/5 years. I strongly feel that now is the time to move on and look for something that would expand my skills sets as well as gets me away from the bloody users. I am a very capable person that can learn a lot by self learning and have noticed that I like using Linux, Command Line like CMD or PowerShell to make automated scripts as well as program within Windows environment to some extent either in C++ or C#. Tho, not a lot I can do with this stuff at work as I focus more on the users end aka support. I also like networking but need to learn a bit more about the enterprise side of things, tho I have a good mixture of knowledge. I would love to play more within servers/scripting environments. When it comes to my qualifications, I currently don't have any except my expired CompTIA A+. So, going forward with my experience and lack of qualifications, which ones should I get next and how I can leverage\jump from being in Desktop Support into Junior System Administrator role ? [Interview/Career help] Advice on how to juggle interviews? Posted: 16 Jul 2021 08:53 AM PDT Howdy, So the situation is: I have two companies that I have made to the final round of interviews. A.) Consulting Gig at a large org. They basically want me to apprentice there then they will hire me on as an actual Consulting Engineer. Health Benefits, Salaried, paying for training and education for the job. Work from Home with some travel sprinkled in.- preferred- -Lower starting pay, high upward movement and typically caps at 120 - 130k, TEXAS- *Very fast-paced* B.) DevOps type role for medium org. Basically, want me to come on to automate and monitor their Dev pipeline. Health Benefits, Contract to hire after 6 months. Work from Home -2nd choice- -higher starting pay, lower upward movement pay caps at 85-90K, TEXAS- *Slower paced* Basically, my question is. When I started interviewing with Company A.) I wasn't interviewing with anyone. Company B.) reached out to me via Dice and moved very quickly. The issue I am having is should I let Company A.) know that another company reached out and has begun their closing interview with me or do I wait for a solid offer. Furthermore, let's say hypothetically I get an offer from B.) that is good but I still prefer A.) should I let them know of B.)'s offer for leverage? Do I just not say anything? Both of these companies reached out to me, I didn't place an app in so it's nice to have this issue. But, I have never gotten this far with two companies at the same exact time. [link] [comments] |
Passed my CCNA with a 923, not sure what to do next. Posted: 16 Jul 2021 07:39 AM PDT Wondering what my next move should be. Should I move onto CCNP? Or try to expand my knowledge on other topics and go for Sec+ / Linux+ I currently work as a network admin for a medium sized company, not sure where I see myself going next. Any suggestions? working at the IT Help Desk is making me miserable Posted: 15 Jul 2021 01:06 PM PDT So this is kinda weird, I work for a big company. I was doing collections (first full time job yay). I was there for about 2 years, in that job I was doing techy things, making advanced excel sheets. Using systems to collect data, and I loved itttt. My manager was nice enough to see that I enjoyed it and let me have time off the phone. Eventually my metrics started to suck and my manager found me a Help Desk role to do something I liked. I was not excited and I honestly should have never accepted the offer. I didn't have any IT experience, just basic Troubleshooting I did in my Pc and knowing how to build computers. I knew working in tech for my company was going to be a bit better cause I knew they had a lot perks. But the job completely changed with the pandemic. 200 calls+ in queues, I help users that are employees of my company, so they always complain about how they need things fixed ASAP and I feel so diminished, I feel less than my previous role, people think we are 3rd party vendors, and are rude. Basically I have 1.3 years of IT now, but I feel that I know nothing about the job still, its always about: solve more tickets, be nicer to end users, search through al thousands badly explained KBs, keep the metrics high in the sky. I always feel my hands are tied due to lock levels; layers of security, it's always about finding workarounds. I can't stand the pressure, I know we are not supposed to love our jobs, but I wake up everyday, just wanting to quit, and leave and be a farmer. At this point I don't even know if I like technology, I know I used to, I knew I loved it. But this job has killed it somehow. I don't have a degree or certification but I don't even know where to move from here, I just want to be away from the call center, I had to go on leave, cause I couldn't handle it anymore. I did get my gsuite but that was easy. I would love to still work in tech but a place where is not hectic. I was thinking about just going back to my old job, and forget about IT, but I make $20/hr, and I fully support myself so I need this money. I am not sure where to move now, it feels that I'm stuck here now. Any advice is appreciated! [link] [comments] |
