Posted: 01 Jul 2021 09:50 PM PDT I'm renting a house that came prewired with Cat5e cable. The house is only 2 stories and ~1200 sq-ft. I know that Cat5e is not rated for 10 Gbps based on specifications, but I read that it can support 10 Gbps up to 45m, which is much longer than of the cable runs in the house, so I'm hoping it will suffice for 10 Gbps. Does anyone have experience with 10 Gbps over Cat5e? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Dealing with a packet loss problem Posted: 02 Jul 2021 07:10 AM PDT So for the past few months now I have been dealing with packet loss which is extremely annoying for me as I play a lot of always online games. Initially I called my ISP (Spectrum) and asked them to come out. The tech that was here ended up changing some line that was on the power pole and then said it should be fine. Fast forward a couple weeks and still nothing had changed. I called them back out and this time he changed the coaxial cable that was running from underneath the house. There were minor bite marks (I think?) on it and he said it could possibly be the issue but that he thought my router was just old as well. I was using some Linksys router I bought in 2012 when I lived somewhere else. I also thought that it could be the router due to it beginning to act up, requiring restarts every couple of days to even function. I ended up buying both a new router (Archer A7) and a new ethernet cable to run from my modem to the router and still nothing changed. I researched more and more and then thought it might be buffer bloat. So I downloaded OpenWRT onto my router and replaced the factory firmware so I could use SQM. I figured this could possibly be it as there are usually 4 computers on in my house, multiple other gaming consoles, phones, etc, many of which are frequently streaming Netflix and other stuff. Still nothing changed. I have begun running Ping Plotter constantly in the background and having it ping Google DNS constantly. Usually when I lag or get stuttering in a stream, I tab over and notice there was indeed disconnects and for the last couple of days I've been trying to screenshot it and save some pictures in a folder. I've uploaded a few of the screenshots here. The graphs are in 10 minute segments and it pings every half second. I have also tested this with the computer hooked directly into the modem to see if it might be a router issue as well and I still saw the red lines on Ping Plotter. So at this point I'm not sure what else I can do. I'm guessing it's something for my ISP to fix but I'm not knowledgeable enough regarding this kind of stuff to know where the issue could be. But seeing as how they already changed the lines from the house and on the pole, is there still stuff they could check? And also are those Ping Plotter graphs enough evidence to show a real problem here? I'm guessing a bit of packet loss is unavoidable but this seems like a bit much. [link] [comments] |
TP-Link EAP245 AP uses passive PoE but no warning on ETH2? Posted: 02 Jul 2021 06:05 AM PDT ETH1 on my AP is designed to handle a passive PoE input, the other switch port, ETH2 is just an output, for another device to connect to it - it certainly isn't a PoE input. The PoE injector is passive, not active, so in theory it shouldn't be connected to any ports other than the ETH1 port, which is designed to handle the PoE injector's 48 volt output. Why is there no warning anywhere on ETH2 or anywhere in the manual that plugging the PoE injector into the wrong port could damage it? Also, why didn't it fry the AP when I accidentally plugged the PoE injector into ETH2 for about 30 seconds? [link] [comments] |
Best Mesh Network for My Netgear? Posted: 01 Jul 2021 07:50 PM PDT I have a Netgear R8000 Tri-Band and I don't want to buy a new router -- I do however want to purchase a compatible and reliable mesh wifi system (preferrably Netgear). Any suggestions? [link] [comments] |
Using 2nd router as wifi extender Posted: 02 Jul 2021 07:45 AM PDT I have a fiber router from my ISP. I have an old router which I am using as a wifi extender using LAN cable. What I wanted to know was if I should keep the channel number same for both the routers? Should I change the upper or lower sideband option for any of the 2 routers? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Jul 2021 07:41 AM PDT I want to know if this CAT 6A cable form monoprice is junk or if it will be fine to wire my house for WAP's and PoE cameras. I sometimes hear really bad things about Monoprice cables and want to make sure before I start a time so dumping project that I am getting some good cable. The link is below for what I'm looking at getting. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Does this affect the internet speed ? Posted: 02 Jul 2021 07:24 AM PDT So i have an old router and so what i plan to do is to connect from the lan port of the new router to the wan port of the old router to extend the wifi range at home. Will this affect the speed of the old router? The range will be around 10-15 meters of cat 5. Will this work plug and play or do i need to change settings of the old router [link] [comments] |
Help me decide: NETGEAR Nighthawk LAX20 VS AVM Fritz!Box 7530 AX Posted: 02 Jul 2021 07:06 AM PDT I want to buy a new router, but I have no clue about what is important. I just want a decent device. I game a lot, but I am aware that gaming on wifi is not possible, so thats no problem. For gaming I still have LAN. All in all I love tech and want to have a good wifi signal for my smart devices and phone. After some research it seems that WI FI 6 is a huge boost, so I mainly look for WI FI 6, but there are different other aspects aswell. I want to spent arround 200 Euros. The nighthawk is currently in a great deal here 200 Euros: [link] [comments] |
Ping a LAN IP, response from extern? Posted: 02 Jul 2021 07:02 AM PDT Hi , What could be the reason for having an external ip suddenly answering to a ping of a local host in my lan? I never ran into this issue and I did not make any changes to my configuration. Can this be related to ARP/ICMP spoofing? After rebooting my Firewall/router everything went back to normal. Any ideas what could have caused this issue? I Would be happy if you could point me to the right information. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Jul 2021 06:55 AM PDT I apologize ahead of time if this is not the appropriate place to post the question, however I'm not sure where to direct it. I have a polycom phone at work and the ethernet cord it came with has a jacket that is low memory (doesn't hold shape as much). I've been trying to find out what the material is, in hopes that I can purchase in bulk online. Does anyone have any idea what it is and where to find it? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
No internet connection on specific router Posted: 02 Jul 2021 06:21 AM PDT hello, i have a asus ac2900 router connected to the ethernet port in the wall. when i log in to the router it says that the internet cable isn't plugged in. I tried with my friends router and then I have an internet connection so I know that something is wrong with the router. I have also tried resetting the router several times. I have SSH'd in to the router to change the date on it and that also didnt work (router had wrong date, presumably since it I moved to a different apartement yesterday and before the move the router was functioning properly. any ideas that I can try out short of buying a new one? thank you. IPv6 ping working only from certain countries Posted: 02 Jul 2021 05:32 AM PDT I am a complete noob in networking so sorry if the question is too basic or I am using the wrong terminology. I was using IPv6 for reaching my RPI outside my home network since the IPv4 is behind NAT by ISP. But recently it just stopped working. I tried an online tool to ping my IPv6 and it is reachable from some countries but for some countries, it is a 100% loss. Is there something that I can fix from my side or it is from the ISP side and nothing can be done? This is the site I used: https://tools.keycdn.com/ipv6-ping It's weird that Bangalore is getting a 100% loss since the ISP is Indian. [link] [comments] |
Minimum devices to tether two ios devices to provide wan access? Posted: 02 Jul 2021 05:20 AM PDT I want to usb-tether two LTE-enabled ipads to offer loadbalanced WAN to a local network. What is the minimum supporting devices needed? With my gl-inet ar750s-ext, I can use its single usb port to tether to one ipad and share its connection over ethernet/wifi. But is it possible to connect both ipads to a usb hub, connect the hub to a single router, and have a router enable tethering for both ipads at the same time? The more expensive method that should work is to buy more routers so each ipad is tethered to its own router and then connect both ipad+router to a third router over two ethernet cables and set up load-balanced wan on the third router. I want to avoid using the wifi hotspot feature on the ipads, though I wonder if any router can support dual WISP-mode or a combination of WISP+tether. [link] [comments] |
Probably a question I have the answer too Posted: 01 Jul 2021 06:30 PM PDT I've had a lot of internet connected devices go online over the last year. IP Cameras, WLC, APs, Ring, etc. I'm getting worried I maybe running of IPs to hand out. By my ISP I was given a 10.0.0.1 Private IP block with a 255.255.255.0 S/M my question is if I were to change my subnet mask to lets say to a 255.255.254.0 would this be something the ISP would have to handle or I can make changes to on my own? If I were to change my s/m on my own would I have to notify my ISP? I have plans to adding 2 servers and start a home lab [link] [comments] |
Aces Point with Physical Toggle Posted: 02 Jul 2021 04:36 AM PDT Hi everyone, I need a acespoint with a on/off switch similar to what most Wifi - Routers have, also the on/off time should be on a programable. Does anyone have a suggesstion for a model that fits these requirements? Also it needs to have at least 802.11ac (wifi 5) Thanks Noah [link] [comments] |
Choosing a router for AT&T fiber Posted: 02 Jul 2021 04:05 AM PDT Currently have Linksys Velop AC2200 router with 1 node, but the signal is weak so I'm assuming I would benefit from another node. I will be (hopefully) upgrading to Fiber soon and am curious what other router I should look into, preferably sold at Best Buy since I have store credit there but not a must. So far I've been eyeing an AX router, the Linksys Velop AX4200 with 2 nodes, the Netgear Nighthawk AX3600 w/ 2 nodes, or adding an additional node to my current AC2200 setup. Lastly, there's the ASUS XD4 (AX1800 I believe?) w/ 2 nodes. I don't know what the exact usage my home is at but at any one point there are one or two HD or UHD streams going and online gaming on a regular basis both on consoles and PC (also unfortunately over wifi, not ethernet yet). So it's important for me to make sure the wifi is up to par and somewhat future proof. I have a PS5 so that made me curious about ax. Any other recommendations or help deciding on one of these? Best way to get wireless in detached garage far away? Posted: 01 Jul 2021 08:30 PM PDT On vacation at the parents this week... My dad wants wireless in his pole barn primarily to run wifi security camera(s). The barn is roughly 175-200ft from the house. I do have mostly clean LOS from the office in the house where the current modem and router are, maybe just a single trees branches. Running an Ethernet cable would be best I know, but that would be a TON of work, as the only routes are a paved driveway area and heavily wooded. Can't really trench it with all the driveway and trees, at least not short term. Are there any options for some sort of extended-range focused signal sender I can install in the house and a receiver of some type I could link to some sort of new access point in the garage? Thanks [link] [comments] |
Help identify unknown devices "network?" Posted: 02 Jul 2021 12:16 AM PDT Yesterday I identified 2 unknown devices on my router, they are labeled as "network" & I cant find any information online. I ran the mac addresses & nothing. Also, what is a "network" device that can connect to a router??? I'm using a nighthawk RAX78. I deleted them & they've reconnected to my network. The only thing I know that changed today was my wife is using a beta update for iphone. Device names: DEV-BA:69:12 DEV-C7:CC:B4 [link] [comments] |

Getting the most out of Wired network Posted: 02 Jul 2021 03:47 AM PDT Relevant images: https://imgur.com/a/uVc3TzQ (network diagram, NTD and connections) I live in a 3 storey house, with several ethernet points throughout. Currently, I have a router/modem plugged into one of these points on the 1st floor, with the network termination device on the Ground floor. The router/modem serves as a hub with several wired connections, and any additional devices connecting over wifi (refer diagram). I would like to be able to connect a device through the wired access point on the second floor, but when I plug into the ethernet port, the device does not detect any connection (this is not a hardware issue, devices connect fine to ports on router directly). I suspect this has something to do with the location of the router in the network, where it currently is: NTD> GF wall port >1F wall port >Router But it should probably be: NTD >Router >GF wall port> other devices The problem here is, if the router is in the GF, the wireless environment will suffer, and I'll lose the convenience of the router as a wired device hub. I assume I can replace this with a ethernet hub and a wireless extender, but I would like to avoid buying addiitonal hardware if possible. I am in Australia, on a Fibre to the Premesis connection, if that proves useful at all. [link] [comments] |
Best router with Parental controls? Posted: 01 Jul 2021 08:05 PM PDT Hello all, not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I am looking for a router that has parental controls. The parental controls on my ISP's modem/router gateway are pretty bad and don't always work as intended. I want to be able to block certain websites like youtube and tiktok on specific devices only. Any recommendations? [link] [comments] |
Looking for advice. DOCSIS 3.1, MOCA Network with Xfinity Gigabit and Cable tv Posted: 02 Jul 2021 03:36 AM PDT Hi there, im looking into more info regarding moca networks and possibly it interfering with my modem. This is a Two story house. Equipment Arris S33 Modem Asus AX86U Xfintiy Gigabit plan with cable tv. With one set top TV box. Actiontec bonded 2.0 moca adapters (x4) Antronix poe filter and 2 way splitter was provided by Comcast. Antronix POE filter ------ Comcast line ---- Antronix 2 way Splitter -- TV Room ---- X1 Cable Box ---- bedroom 1 ---- Arris S33 Modem ___ ASUS AX86U Router From router ____ 5 port network switch in bedroom 3. Bedroom 2??? ------ = coax cable _____= ethernet cable Starting at the 2 way splitter, I have 3 bedroom coax cables. Bedroom 1 is going to the modem. Bedroom 2 is my room. Bedroom 3 is the master bedroom. So I had my own 4 way splitter. I bought a Keliiyo one rated for 5-2500Mhz and put it in replace of the 2 way splitter to connect bedroom 2 and 3. So my modem was working and still able to watch TV on the X1 cable box. Using my actiontec bonded 2.0 moca adapters i used for 3 years or so. I connected the moca adapter in bedroom 2 and connected bedroom 3 adapter from the wall coax into the actiontec. The moca network did work but very poorly, like under 80mbps when on a gigabit plan from Xfinity. I would like to use my moca network as my backhaul to put an additional wifi access point in the TV room as well but its not as important. I want wired ethernet to my bedroom (bedroom 2) using COAX and MOCA but not having to run a 50-75 foot ethernet cable from bedroom 1. I would like to get moca network working if possible without interference but as I read up more about Moca and Docsis 3.1 it seems that I am running into issues. Maybe im overthinking things but let me know if you have other questions. [link] [comments] |
Internet goes down every minute Posted: 02 Jul 2021 03:00 AM PDT Hi, We moved to a different ISP last week and noticed that since then, our internet goes down every other minute for anywhere in between 1-60 seconds. I'm not the biggest networking expert but I've tried my best to come with as much info as I can offer:
On that note, pinging 8.8.8.8 will sometimes become unreachable first, then time out twice, become unreachable again, time out twice, and then it'll ping fine again The connection drops for both cabled and wireless connections. I've tried changing my ethernet's adapter settings. The following ones did not make a difference; In my modem's settings, I've changed the channel, bandwidth, toggled WMM/WMMM, 802.11 mode (currently set to b/g/n), but with no success. I'm clueless as to what else I should try. I'll gladly answer any questions or run any tests. [link] [comments] |
How do I set up a moca network? Posted: 01 Jul 2021 04:52 PM PDT I dont get internet in my current room but it dose have a coax port. Would I be able to set up a mocha betwork without rewiring any of the ocax laid throughout my apt? IE if my modem is in the living room would I be able to get internet in my master bedroom via moca / coax? [link] [comments] |
