Considering Returning My Alienware Area51M R2 … What Could I Replace It With? Posted: 02 Jul 2021 05:17 AM PDT I'm writing from a phone, so I can't copy paste the form, my apologies. Basically I'm just curious if I can find anything better than Area 51M R2 before the return window closes. There's a few minor issues with it, nothing too awful. So, first what I like about this laptop a lot: 1) the screen and the size of the whole thing. It really makes me feel like I'm holding a portable device with its own identity rather than a monitor attached to keyboard or mass produced item. 2) I love the design and materials used for the build; 3) tobii eye tracking is a fun feature; 4) the fans are large and deal with heat quickly. I actually like how they sound which is insane… I hate loud sounds but the fans on this laptop have this "whoosh" sound which doesn't bother me; 5) GPU and CPU are powerful enough to handle games like Red Dead Redemption 2 on high-ultra and good frame rate. Having two power bricks and enough power for components makes this machine a perfect middle ground between PC and laptops. What I don't like: 1) coil whine ;( especially annoying since the laptop is super quiet on idle and basic tasks… 2) promise of upgrades is a lie… I wanted to upgrade to 2080S but it's not available anymore. And apparently upgrading CPU to i9 will cause heat issues? What I want to find: A laptop that is similar but perhaps more powerful? I spent 2000$ on this one and overall I think it is worth the money. Sure, I could save up and get 3070 RTX but I don't think the build would be as good. Goal: demanding AAA titles at 60 FPS 1080p, I don't need more. Can you think of any alternative to this Area 51M ? Something that would be similar in terms of noise handling (comfy "whoosh"), power and price (up to 2500$ maximum). Also style is very important to me and I dislike something like, say, HP Omen or Razer usual offerings. I'm looking at upcoming Alienware x15… do you think that would be better considering all I wrote? I also saw M15 R4 and R5 - those would most likely not be as good with fans. I really don't feel like saving up more money and spending over 2000$. This laptop was actually 2200$ because of the tax so yeah.. ideally I wouldn't want to go for x15 which is about 2400-2500$ with tax but if you think it fits my needs, feel free to let me know. Or if you have any other laptop you could suggest. I'll appreciate any advice. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Jul 2021 12:33 AM PDT LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: Price range is 900-1200 $ Are you open to refurbs/used? Looking for advice for models primarily and longterm, so probably no. How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Performance > build quality > battery life > form factor Performance has to be decent/good as I will need to use demanding math-programs, text-editors and browsers simultaneously. Memory is high priority, SSD a must - 500 MB +. No touchscreen needed. Build quality and battery life should be decent for 6-8 hours usage every day, with option to go without charge for minimum of 2 hours. How important is weight and thinness to you? Not a crucial point, but prefer not to carry around a block. 4 kg is around limit. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14-15 inch preferred. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. MathCad and MatLab will probably be the most demanding programs. No gaming. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Preferably no touch-screen or finger-print reader. A decent touchpad is a must. A good keyboard is necessary, Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Laptop will primarily be used for studies and later work within the software engineering field. Looking for a longterm investment that will handle all needs for mobile work. Hope that is sufficient information - will answer any questions. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
Which Laptop among the 4 should I take. Posted: 02 Jul 2021 03:39 AM PDT Hello everyone! So I will be starting my master in the coming October, and want to buy a new laptop. My major is Data Science, and I want a machine which can handle data processing, coding and even sometimes using a virtual machine for Big Data applications. The 4 I shortlisted (If you have another laptop in mind under 1500USD or 1.2 L INR then let me know) Acer Swift 5 - i7 11th gen, Xe Graphics, 1 TB SSD, 16GB RAM 90k/1200 USD. Zenbook 14 UX425 EA - i7 11th gen, XE, 512 TB SSD, 16 GB Ram, 1L/1350 USD MacBook Air M1 - 16 Unified, 512 GB SSD, 8+8 core, 1.2L/1500 USD MacBook Pro M1 - 16 Unified, 512 GB SSD, 8+8 core, 1.3-1.4L/ 1600USD Ive read that Air and Pro are very similar, except for maybe a little on the design and the fan. Basically the thing is I am a windows user, I've used windows PC/Laptop since I was like 10, and I don't know how difficult it would be to switch to MacOS (plus I don't own an iPhone too). Please tell me if switching to Mac would be a huge upgrade or stay with Windows (with Win11 coming soon), and will there be any trouble running applications and virtual machines on Mac. I do video editing like once a week, it's just a hobby kind of a thing, but wouldn't mind a powerful enough machine to handle Davinci. Thanks in Advance ✌️ [link] [comments] |
ThinkPad P14s i GEN 2 vs DELL Precision 3560 Posted: 01 Jul 2021 09:10 PM PDT I am considering a 2000 SGD-ish mobile workstation to replace my current one (HP Zbook Studio G3). I am considering both Both Lenovo ThinkPad P14s I gen 2 or DELL Precision 3560 (too bad HP Zbook Firefly is not available here in SG). Both have similar spec (Intel® Core™ Processor i7-1165G7, 16GB RAM 3200Mhz Non-ECC , Quadro T500 (2gb for Dell, 4gb for Thinkpad). The Dell one is lucrative since it is a bit cheaper, but it seems that people have issues with Dell (My boss' dell has battrey bulging and other reliability issues), but Lenovo one is 200 SGD more. Anyone has experiences with both laptops? Edit: I am a researcher, and i use my computer mainly for ABAQUS, ANSYS, MATLAB and AutoCAD Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Can I get anything better than the basic Legion 5 (AMD 4600H, GTX 1650) for £850? Posted: 02 Jul 2021 01:53 AM PDT UK - Hi all I'm getting a laptop for uni/gaming and don't really want to spend more than 850. Unfortunately I can't get all the models here. I found this model for £699 and £850 and the 2021 version with 5600H/GTX 3060 for £899. But I wondered if there was anything more impressive specs wise for around that price or if I should should just get the base model. I don't need Cyberpunk on Ultra settings but would like it to handle stuff smoothly. I've seen it handle Warzone and GTA at 60+fps which is fine. I'd prefer it to have the muted design if possible. Here's my form - LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Reliable 2-in-1 with a good graphics card. Posted: 02 Jul 2021 04:44 AM PDT LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: 2000-4000 AUD but I'm willing to go to the 4000s if it means more reliability. Are you open to refurbs/used? No How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? 2-in-1 is essential (I assume, if I want an active pen to work). Then I'd say reliability is a bit more important than performance. Since I'm willing to go big I'd like this purchase to last a while. Battery life is not important. How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important at all. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. The bigger the better unless there's a major impact on performance. Otherwise anything over 13" is fine Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Yes, I'll be 3d modelling/animating/rendering and doing video/photo editing, So I'd like a good graphics card. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Nothing specific. I am unlikely to go above 60fps. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Needs to work with an active pen with pressure. Wacom Bamboo Ink Plus preferred but I'd be willing to buy a proprietary active pen if I had to. Tilt would be nice but not essential. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Can someone tell me which Nvida or AMD card would be comparable to the Intel Iris Xe that seems to pop up everywhere? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Jul 2021 03:30 AM PDT Hello, everyone! My wonderful macbook air that my father handed down to me when I was a baby of 15 is unfortunately gotten too difficult to use. A lot of the punctuation and arrow keys don't work, and I've had to get them all mapped to various function buttons and need to switch to a different custom keyboard layout every time I want to use the arrow keys. At this point I'm emotionally attached to this laptop, but it's super inconvenient to program on. I'd really like a super-durable laptop that will last me a good few years. **LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE** * **Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:** Around 1200 gbp/1,20,000 inr. I live in India, but one of my relatives lives in the UK, and will be visiting me in December. I don't mind waiting if I can find a good cyber monday/black friday deal. * **Are you open to refurbs/used?** Yes! I'd prefer something refurbished, as long as it has no serious defects and will last a good while. * **How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?** build quality > performance > battery life > form factor, although I'm not really sure what form factor means here. If you're asking whether I want a laptop with some sort of gimmick, like one of those laptops that turn into a tablet, no. If it's about aesthetics, it's about as important as battery life for me. I'd really love a minimalist look- something that does not look like it can transform into a mech. * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** It would be really useful to have a light laptop, but I can adjust if a product is better in other ways. * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** 15.6 inches. * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** Computer science major, if that's important. I'd like to be able to run games that range from hollow knight, hollow knight: silksong (when and if it comes out), doom 2016, dark souls 3, fallout new vegas, the witcher 3 (if possible! I know it's demanding). I also emulate some old gba/snes games, but since they work on my current laptop, they'll probably work on about any laptop. * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** Yeah, see above. The witcher 3 on medium/high graphics at 60fps would be incredible but I haven't set my heart on being able to play it. I do want the laptop to have the most future-proof specs that my budget will allow, though. * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** A good keyboard is really, really important. I do a lot of typing. The overall build quality is also super important! I know electronics today aren't built to last, but I'd like any laptop I buy to last at least five years... I'm also pretty clumsy so any suggestions should be sturdy/built to last. I'd also like to have a nice screen if possible, and 120hz+, as this laptop will probably be my only way of watching movies or shows for the next couple of years. * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** I would really, really like a good amount of storage, around 1 TB, and 16gb ram would be great! Also, I'm still really new to linux, and while I'm trying to learn, I still would like my experience with my new laptop to be as painless as possible. I've heard nvidia gpus still don't play well with linux bc of proprietary software, but I know that if I want to do any intensive gaming and not sell a kidney I'll need one, so I was thinking of dual-booting arch linux with windows ltsc. I've been thinking about the xmg fusion, the european version of the eluktronics mag-15. Unfortunately, I've heard a lot of shitty things about intel's bios releases for the laptop... Also, for basically any laptop I get, I won't be able to access any official service centers if something goes wrong, just my local tech shop guy. [link] [comments] |
Looking for a gaming laptop in UK Posted: 02 Jul 2021 03:18 AM PDT LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: My budget is around 900-1000£ here in the UK. Are you open to refurbs/used? I would prefer a brand new laptop. How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? I am not sure of the form factor as I am not familiar enough with laptops as I have always used desktop computers but I would like one comfortable for gaming and with a keyboard as close to a Spanish keyboard as possible, as for build quality I am not sure either as I will mostly be using it at home but bring it with me during holidays or travelling or changing countries, the performance should be good enough to run new games properly for at least a couple of upcoming years, battery life isnt the most important as I will be playing at home most of the time.

Posted: 02 Jul 2021 03:11 AM PDT I've read through some posts here and the best (available) options for me seem to be Lenovo IdeaPad 3 or Asus Vivobook 15 I've had a Microsoft Office but it came with a factory problem and I was dumb enough to not get it switched with a properly working one early enough 🙃 If you have any other options I should consider checking out especially at 500-600 range that outperform the two I mentioned, let me know! New Razer Blade 14 for AutoCAD and Engineering Software? Or any other suggestions? Posted: 01 Jul 2021 05:08 PM PDT LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE
Hello! I'm an upcoming first year engineering student, and my 6yr old MacBook is not going to cut it for the workload I'm expecting to have. I was thinking along the lines of the new, sleek Razer Blade 14 with the Ryzen 5000 series and the RTX 3060, but was unsure if Razer laptops are as dependable as a professional Dell device for example.
