Razer or Macbook or something else?

Razer or Macbook or something else?

Razer or Macbook or something else?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 09:42 PM PDT

Hi guys so heres the situation:

    PC-guy all my life. Currently using a Razer Stealth 13 (8th gen i7, MX150, 16gb, 1tb samsung M.2) and love it.

I got it for a few reasons: USB-C everything, portable, love the build quality, looks great and love generally using it.

I saw the Razer 14 showing up on reviews and started to get excited but started to realise it wasnt going to really tick the boxes I was after if I wanted an upgrade. What I want is: Better battery life, taller screen ratio, better gaming performance (im super casual but the X150 is very limiting) and would love to keep USB-C charging if possible. Build quality is also important to me.

The laptop that seems to be ticking all those boxes is surprisingly - a 13 inch M1 Macbook pro.....

Dave 2D did a great video that made me realise that I should really consider an M1 Mackbook. Compared to the new Razer 13 and 14 theyre actually pretty reasonably priced.

Is there another laptop out there I should be considering?

University Linux notebook: hardcore programming, portability, battery life

    Posted: 30 Jun 2021 03:29 AM PDT

    Hi everybody,

I'm in the process of buying a work laptop. I trimmed the choice down to two options:

    TUXEDO Pulse 14 - Full-HD

    64GB (2x 32GB) 3200MHz CL22 SamsungAMD Ryzen 7 4800H1000 GB Samsung 980 PRO (NVMe PCIe 4.0)TUXEDO_OS 20.04 LTS

    Customized Dell XPS 13 9310

    11th Generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-1185G7 Processor (12MB Cache, up to 4.8 GHz)13.4" FHD+ (1920 x 1200) InfinityEdge Non-Touch Anti-Glare 500-Nit Display32GB 4267MHz LPDDR4x Memory Onboard512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe Solid State DriveIntel(R) Iris Xe GraphicsUbuntu Linux 20.04

They are at exactly the same price target (€ 1450 + Italian VAT), and I am struggling at finding a direct comparison between the 4800H and the i7-1185G7.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:€1800 incl. Italian VAT 22%
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?Nope. Only selected vendors as it will be purchased by my university
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?build quality - performance - battery life
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?very much
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.the higher resolution the better, I can play with more space
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.gaming occasionally (two times a year, maybe), Paradox / strategic stuff, under Linux. I am going to have multiple instances of IntelliJ Idea, Gradle parallel builds. It will be used mostly for teaching and software development.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?Europa Universalis 4 / Stellaris and the like. Possibly at the maximum resolution allowed by the screen. But really, not that important, I explicitly asked for notebook with no discrete graphics
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?reliable build quality, linux certification, low weight
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.I'm truly struggling to understand exactly what I would get from picking the newer DELL over the Tuxedo. Half the memory and the storage, but how much more battery life exactly? And how good are the screens?
Further note: in any case I will install Manjaro Linux myself, I don't like Ubuntu and want a rolling release distribution. There will never be any Windows on the machine.

Help me pick a gaming laptop

    Posted: 30 Jun 2021 02:19 AM PDT

Hello, I'm looking for a laptop for gaming, and I'm stuck on these two options. I'm almost illiterate when it comes to PC specs, so I really need some advice.

    1. Acer Predator Triton 300 PT315-52-55TU Black/Blue, 15.6 ", IPS, FHD, 1920 x 1080 pixels, Matt, Intel Core i5, i5-10300H, 16 GB, DDR4, SSD 512 GB, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti, GDDR6, 6 GB, No ODD, Windows 10 Home, Keyboard language English, Keyboard backlit, Warranty 24 month(s), Battery warranty 12 month(s), Price: 1190 Eur.

    2.Acer Nitro 5 AN515-54-5719 Black/Red, 15.6 ", IPS, Full HD, 120 Hz, 1920 x 1080 pixels, Matt, Intel, i5-9300H, 16 GB, DDR4, SSD 512 GB, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060, GDDR6, 6 GB, No ODD, Windows 10 Home, 802.11 ax, Bluetooth version 5.0, Keyboard language English, Keyboard backlit, Warranty 24 month(s), Battery warranty 12 month(s), Price: 1035 Eur.

As much as I looked, the 1st variant has better Intel processor but 2nd variant has better Nvidia processor. Is the first laptop actually worth the extra 150 Euros?

Also I would like to know if I can add internal HDD in these laptops.

    Thanks in advance!

    Spectre x360 14, XPS 13, Surface Laptop 4, or LG Gram 14

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 10:36 PM PDT

I'm looking for a new laptop, and these are the 4 I have narrowed it down to. I found prices for all of these, configured with 16GB RAM + 1135G7/1165G7/1185G7/4600U (1135G7, 1165G7, and 1185G7 seem to be basically the same ?) for about $1349, minus the SL4 which is $1199 (

    x360 14 -

    Pros -

    • 3:2 display
    • I really like the design
    • 2-in-1
    • Free pen
    • Seems to have great battery life (from reviews)
    • Great I/O

    Cons -

    • 1135G7 instead of 1165G7 (Again, it seems to be the same as the 1165G7, but I guess it's a con since it's a lower tier CPU?)

    XPS 13 -

    Pros -

    • 16:10 display
    • USB-C charging

    Cons -

    • I/O is rough (No USB-A)
    • No touch (Extra $250 for touch)

    SL4 -

    Pros -

    • 3:2 display
    • I have a SL1 and I love it
    • Great keyboard
    • Alcantara
    • $150 less than the others
    • 4680U

    Cons -

    • I/O sucks ass
    • Microsoft support sucks ass (from experience)
    • Bezels
    • 256GB vs the 512GB of all the others

    Gram -

    Pros -

    • 16:10 display
    • Lightest by quite a bit
    • I've heard good things about the battery on the Gram
    • Pretty good I/O

    Cons -

    • No touch

I can look at spec sheets all day, but it really just comes down to user experience. I would love to hear from anybody who owns any of these laptops

    Laptop for CS degree $400~700

    Posted: 30 Jun 2021 02:49 AM PDT

    -Budget: $400~$700-

    I'm fine with used/refurbs

    Screen size: N/A

Probably will mostly use it for schoolwork(programming) and video calls, but I might also play Valorant and Genshin Impact + media consumption

I'd like something that'll last me through college, touchpad is a must, fancy additions like fingerprint scanners would be nice but not necessary - Would prefer a laptop with a nice keyboard(US) and a thinner build(not necessary either though)

Atm I'm thinking of a used Macbook Pro 2015, people online seem to suggest buying this one even in 2021. I'd like some input from anyone who has experience buying a used macbook for programming related purposes or anyone who's currently using an older macbook. I'm also considering the Lenovo Thinkpad 480 i5 8350u 8GB ram 256GB storage and Huawei Mediabook 13. Honestly I'm open to any suggestions, however I would prefer specific model suggestions instead of general advice. Thank you!

    Best gaming laptop under 1500€

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 08:39 PM PDT

Need a new gaming laptop to run multiplayer fps games like cod or battlefield or singleplayer AAA games.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

      1500€ (preferrably around 1000-1200€)

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      No

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I want something with good build quality that lasts long. Decently slim (not chunky) with decent aesthetics (not RGB unicorn colours or GaMeRz vibe). A good battery life that doesnt require it to be plugged in 24/7 and decent screen quality (15.6" as a maximum) as it will be used for regular office type work too.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Decently important. I dont mind if its a bit heavier and thicker than a macbook air/pro but I dont want it to be super heavy and bulky like some alienware or msi laptops I have seen.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

15.6" would be ideal but I wouldn't mind if it's a bit smaller either.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I will be gaming on it. Should be able to run modern AAA games at 1080p minimum with a 60fps minimum frame rate. Games like the new CoD, Battlefield and Singleplayers like AC Valhalla, Doom, Gears 5, Forza Horizon and anything on Gamepass really.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

1080p 60fps minimum for modern AAA games (obviously the better the resolution / frame rates the better). Games like the new cod, ac valhalla, far cry 6, red dead, forza, halo, ori etc (most gamepass games).

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Solid build quality, webcam, decent speakers, fingerprint or windows hello, good trackpad and keyboard.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I need a laptop that can do all of the mentioned above but that will also last a decent amount of time. I want a laptop from a brand known for their build quality as I come from macbooks. Last thing I want is for it to give me problems from day 1 and that it breaks down in a year or two. It's either this or an Xbox Series X so I need something that will keep up to expectations.

Looking for smooth graphic design /digital art friendly laptop

    Posted: 30 Jun 2021 02:25 AM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    1,100 USD United States

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

-If it's a really good deal with a good warranty yes.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

-Definitely performance first, build quality second and then battery.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

-Has to be reasonably portable under 7lbs id say? (though most are these days)

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    -At least 14, 15preffered.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

-Clip studio art and photoshop 90% of the time, 4-5 days a week 9 hours a day on the weekends.

-No video editing, rarely playing with 3D models, no plans to sculpt or render.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

-Occasionally play ffxiv for a few hours a week, I'm used to 60hz standard laptop settings, as long as it runs im happy

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

-Fingerprint drive could be awesome, not required. No touch screen please. Display port option ideal, not a deal breaker

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

-Recently bought MSI Laptop Modern 14 B11SB-290 Intel Core i7 11th Gen 1165G7 (2.80 GHz) 16 GB Memory 512 GB NVMe SSD NVIDIA GeForce MX450 14.0" Windows 10 Home 64-bit.

I've had nothing but problems with it, usb port issues, random crashes and freezes very little customer support service. Mostly hardware or software issues. But when it runs it runs beautifully.

So I would like to stay within similar specs, but willing to downgrade gpu slightly. Looking for a familiar brand like Asus, Acer, Lenovo etc

I need this laptop to last me 2 years.

as I will be traveling alot a desktop is not ideal for my current lifestyle, but I plan to do so in the future.

I like an ssd drive, around 500gb would be fantastic. I use an external and cloud backup for all my art.

Some models I was considering Lenovo

    Asus vivobook

ALSO Asus rpg (this seems to be recommended alot in the sub

Need an ARM windows computer for build and testing ARM

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 06:50 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

      Lower the better

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      No

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

The most important thing is it is an ARM laptop. Next would be Ethernet, followed by a battery that won't explode if I keep it plugged in for 3 years. Performance is next as we will be using it to compile.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Do not care. I would prefer a Mac Mini sized format but I can't use a Mac mini with parallels.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      Will be remote connecting.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

      Compiling with Azure DevOps

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

      N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Arm for windows 10 Pro or enterprise, cannot be windows 10 Home. Can be connected to Ethernet even if it's through dongles

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I need a computer that meets these so I can test software for Windows arm. I will not be daily driving nor manually using it. Only automated testing. There was a arm dev kit announced a while ago but no updates to it.

    Laptop for programming and work

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase.

    Around 30000NOK, Norway.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

32GB RAM, Battery life, CPU performance. In that torder.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Somewhat important. Don't want a workstation laptop - doesn't need to be an ultrabook.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

15" or bigger. The 13" feels too small to view over longer periods and the keyboards on some of them feel cramped togheter.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Visual Studio and Docker are my main programs. If I need a GPU later I will probably just get a eGPU.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

SUGGEST SOME BEST LAPTOPS FOR VIDEO EDITING WHICH ARENT GODLY EXPENSIVE.

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 07:33 AM PDT

I am looking for a laptop which provides high processing capability for rendering/editing on adobe PP. Right now i'm confused between selecting laptops having intel processors (i5 11th) and AMD Ryzen processors. I don't know which of these processors provides best performance for editing. keeping in mind that I wont be playing any graphically intensive games on this laptop. Any suggestions?

P.s the laptop should have expandable memory capability.

Edit _- I'm a College Student, hence tight on budget.

Budget - $1000 - $1200( I don't live in the US (India), so laptops are kinda expensive here)

Edit - Are Asus Laptops a good fit for this post? i have zenbook 14 on my mind but the only problem is that it aint expandable.

Edit- not a fan of mac books, because they are burning expensive and im a windows guy.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    country of purchase - India

    budget - 80000 Rupees

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    NO.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

A hybrid if available. (ultrabook arent expandable but at the same time i want something thin and light)

How important is weight and thinness to you?

not particularly OCD on thin and weight. i demand performance. i see thinness and weight as extra add ons

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    15 inch

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Solid build quality for around £1000

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Around £1000 in UK, but willing to consider something a bit more if there is a big benefit

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Build quality, performance, battery life, form factor

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Unimportant

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    14 or 15 inch

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Lots of multi-tasking with Office etc, but no CAD/video

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    No gaming

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Main requirement is a well built, solid machine. I'm looking to keep it for a long time as well, so I'd prefer 16gb ram for future-proofing.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'm looking for something that's got a better build quality than the cheap laptops of around £300-500. I'd prefer a few options as well if possible from different brands. Anything to avoid would also be really useful, eg avoid this type of processor. The most promising laptop I have found so far is the Dell Latitude 5510 / 5520 on the Dell website, which are currently £849 or £899 + vat respectively on their website.

I am looking for the sweet spot here - best bang for buck rather than the latest model.

Thanks so much for any help!

Are you open to refurbs/used? No

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? High performance is a must, great build quality is a must, and would really love amazing battery life so I could last most of the workday if not all of it without needing to plug it in.

How important is weight and thinness to you? Would prefer a lightweight laptop if possible but if not it must be under 5 lb.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Preferably larger than 15 inch, depending on laptop though it isn't a absolute must.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I do CAD often but not everyday, usually use SOLIDWORKS. I mainly code in game development using unreal and unity.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Heavy gamer, like to play R6, Apex Legends, Titanfall 2, and VALORANT, at max settings with minimum fps being the refresh rate.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? An amazing keyboard is a must, must have great build quality, touch-screen isn't needed, fingerprint reader would be nice but isn't a must, large trackpad would be nice and preferable, and an amazing screen is a must so preferably nothing that is 16:9, not a 4k screen.

Opinion on the new 499 14 inch tiger lake wallmart laptops ?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2021 01:16 AM PDT

they have a 14 inch slim laptop that has a 11th gen Tiger lake I5, 16gb DDR4 3200, no name NVME 512gb drive, plus theres a 2nd M2 slot you can use for a 2nd storage Sata M.2 card in. decent 1080p IPS panel. it has a barrel charging brick but it can also charger off its USB C (its 499, i dont expect thunderbolt), plus unlocked bios so you can push it to 30 watt.

I have a couple of friends which are coming back from the states and it seems like a steal for a laptop of those specs, ends up being 410 euros in exchange, which is Low end i3 money here in Spain.

And yes, i know that wallmart is bottom of the barrel and the walton family is basically allied with the devil, but the laptop seems really good in reviews.

$1000> (better if it's on sale)

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      -Refurbished are okay

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Balance of Build quality, performance, and at least 6 hrs of battery life

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

I'd like it to be portable, so pretty important

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      -15+ in

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

-AutoCAD, light gaming, league of legends, Minecraft..

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

-Good input and touchpad, the more features the better. The gamer-y look isn't for me, I'd like something slick looking

Should i replace the battery or is this problem not due to the battery.

Or is a battery for such a old laptop not worth it and should i go with a chromebook?

I do light office work and school work.

    Best upgradable laptop?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 09:46 PM PDT

Ideally I'm looking for a thin laptop with a strong CPU and maybe a decent GPU.

This was a great way to save money on my laptop back in the day, and don't see why it wouldn't be today.

    Basically;

    • strong components that can't be upgraded (GPU, Heatsink, Battery, and a motherboard that supports DDR4)

    • Shittiest 2GB RAM, Shittiest 200GB HDD. Potentially~ a shitty CPU, but this is a much more rare component where it has to be both serviceable, and the mobo had to have modern CPU sockets for AMD or Intel

GPU is not at all my primary concern, but it's something that's often impossible to "upgrade" on a laptop, and you'd run into all sorts of battery supply issues if you somehow added a strong GPU. So that being said, ideally something that's decent

I guess to me, a "decent" GPU is like, running fortnite/minecraft/terraria, and similar games at full settings; and able to run 45-60FPS on more modern games like Warzone at "medium" settings. So I guess anything from a GTX 970 onwards is "decent", and 3060 RTX being "good" and absolutely no need for anything higher.

    Computer for engineering school/gaming

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 05:59 PM PDT

I need a laptop for engineering work/school, and light gaming

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

      1,300 top

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      -No

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

-Performance and battery life, then just is it easy to carry-

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

-I will be having to take this to classes, and work. I would want a fairly light and thin laptop to make my life easier.-

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      • 14 to 16 inches-
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

-I will definitely need to be able to use CAD software, and will likely game a little on it. It was recommended to have 16GB of RAM-

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Nothing too specific, likely things like league of legends or Civ6. Whatever catches my attention

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

-I want a good keyboard, a build that will last for a while. I don't care about touch screen or fingerprint reader.-

**To be honest I really don't know a whole lot about the technical aspects of computers. I trust you guys will do what you can*

Looking for a good, reliable gaming/work laptop

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 05:41 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      $1400-2000 CAD (Purchasing in Canada)
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Top priorities for me are build quality first, followed by performance as a very close second, then longevity. Decent battery life is a plus but certainly not most important to me. As long as it is well built, runs what I want to run on it and (ideally) lasts me for a while I'm happy.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Not important at all
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I will mostly use the laptop for gaming and tasks related to university work (microsoft office, zoom meetings, checking emails, etc.).
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
The games I will mostly be playing are:
      Civilization 6
      Cities: Skylines
      Starcraft
      Heroes of the Storm
In terms of settings and FPS, I am willing to play at slightly lower settings to get higher FPS, I'm not super picky in this regard. It would be preferred for me to be able to play at standard/slightly higher than standard settings and get a high frame-rate, but like I said I am willing to compromise on graphics settings if the laptop runs the games well (at a good frame-rate).
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
As mentioned above, reliable build quality is very important to me, in addition to good performance. I really don't require any excessive accessories in this laptop (don't need a touch screen, fingerprint reader, etc.). A webcam would be nice, but not a necessity as I am perfectly fine to buy one separately.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I would love to be able to have a laptop that lasts a while. What I really am looking for is a solid, dependable laptop to run the games I listed above at a decent frame-rate (while playing online with friends), which can double as my work computer for my masters. I don't know a whole lot about computers, but if anyone has any questions to further narrow down my search I'll answer them the best I can.

Thanks so much for taking a look. This will be for my 8 year old sister. She has used mobile phones and tablets so far but those crapped out and I thought as an earliy birthday/christmas to replace with a proper lap top. She loves roblox and minecraft and I think would like to enjoy other light gaming.

I would consider myself pretty knowledgeable when it comes to PCs but the lap top scene has changed since I last got one 10 years ago

EDIT , sorry about the form gore, i have no idea what I did.

Solid laptop for emulating WiiU and 3DS?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 04:51 PM PDT

    • Total budget (US):
      $2,000 max
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Sure!
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
ASUS ZenBook 15 is what I'm leaning towards as the trackpad can be used as the second display
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Meh
    • Do you have a preferred screen size?
      15"+
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I use my PS5 for the majority of my gaming, just want to emulate at a solid 60fps whether that's 1080, or 4K. I don't know if you can notice much a difference on a laptop (correct me if I'm wrong).
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I'm a cinema junkie, so the highest settings possible, but nothing that will make me drop below 60fps. I'm just too spoiled now unfortunately. I will be emulating Breath of the Wild, Wind Waker HD, Twilight Princess HD etc.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
As perviously stated, the trackpad being a second display is a really neat feature on the ZenBook 15 I'd like to have. I'm coming from a 2015 MacBook Pro so I'm used to not having features.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
The ASUS ZenBook 15 model I'm referencing is UX535LI-XH77T and features a 4K display, Intel Core i7-10750H, GeForce GTX 1650 Ti, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD, ScreenPad 2.0, and Thunderbolt 3. Just want to know if that will work well for 60fps emulation, or if there is something similar/ better. Thank you all!
