Uptime: 93 days - a new record for me Posted: 04 Jun 2021 04:57 AM PDT A few months ago I installed OpenWRT (my first outing with it) on used three year-old PC Engines apu2c4 hardware. Unlike the succession of off-the-shelf home routers I've had over the years, this has been absolutely solid. No periodic hangs, & necessity to "unplug, plug it back in" so far. Side note: I installed the SQM package, which was pretty easy to set up, & this has done a good job with latency/bufferbloat on my busy 300/25 connection. [link] [comments] |
2.5gbe modem to router to pc... How? Posted: 04 Jun 2021 05:24 PM PDT Comcast 1.2gbps runs at about 1.4gbps. My modem has a 2.5g port, and my PC has a 2.5g port... But I cannot find a single router with two 2.5 ports, one for WAN one for LAN. I really don't want to set up a whole pfsense box with 2.5gb cards just to do this. Are there any other viable solutions? [link] [comments] |
Need Help with R8000 with FIOS Posted: 04 Jun 2021 09:08 PM PDT I am having some issues figuring out how to hook up this router. It looks like my current verizon router needs a coaxal cable in for the internet to connect. I found something online saying to connect the Nighthawk to the verizon router but that sounds way off and like it defeats the purpose. I am obviously not a big network guy so what am I missing? I need help explaining networking to my brother. Posted: 04 Jun 2021 08:36 PM PDT So. I'm having an infuriating debate with my brother. For context, I am currently in the process of obtaining a CompTIA A+ certification. Althougj i have no professional experience configuring networks, I have been studying so I can pass the test. About a year ago, I began my escapade into making my homes's network strong enough to handle the literal 40 clients connected to it on a daily basis. The fordt attempt was a Mesh solution from TP Link... That did not work and tought me the valuable lesson of Throughput. The next attempt was a powerful Asus router that, paired with another router though AI Mesh, yeided a network that, on paper (the primary router wasnt defective), would have served our needs perfectly. My most recent attempt was a similar case. I replaced the defective modem my ISP gave me. (The network no longer drops 10 times a day.) Ans upgraded to a Nighthawk router with Wi-Fi 6, and got a Mesh repeater that my brother has connected to directly over ethernet. But the underlying issue is still present: no device, other than the router, can see the full 400mbps I pay for. Ive accounted for everything: signal degrigation, overlapping channels, signal noise... Which is leading me to my final plan. To get power to my dad's office, as well as my bedroom, I plan to use MoCa. (I'd use ethernet, but the amount of wire I will need to make that happen makes it too expensive...) On top of that, I plan to get a LAN router that supports POE, and a couple of Wi-Fi 6 access points to recreate a strong Wi-Fi network that would have direct access to the router without having to deal with the signal degrading too fast. On paper, its a pricy, but powerful networking solution that ticks all the boxes... But my brother thinks that we can call Spectrum and just pay them to install this network... He is adament that they can create a solution like this and deploy it for free. Can someone help me explain that ISPs do not set up networks like this? [link] [comments] |
ERR_NETWORK_ACCESS_DENIED ...Can't access my routers UI Posted: 04 Jun 2021 08:27 PM PDT Hello, As the title suggests I am suddenly presented with this error message every time I try to access my routers UI. Windows claims that my network or firewall settings may be at fault but I can't find anything that would lead to that, even if I manually turn off all firewalls. I'm stumped and need to access my ASUS RT-AC3200's UI. Help appreciated. [link] [comments] |
New Archer AC4000 router is running at about half of my connection. Advice on how to get more? Posted: 04 Jun 2021 08:27 PM PDT So, I recently got a gigabit connection. Yes, I know I won't see that full 1 gig, however if I test at the modem (either by plugging in directly or by testing at the router) I get around 800Mb. If I test on my computers, I get a max of around 500Mb but typically hover around 400Mb. We'll just focus on my gaming laptop because I can make a comparison to my connection. On my laptop, I have pulled over 850Mb/s at a friend's so I know the card is capable (but has no port to plug in a CAT cable) but here at the house on this router, I've not exceeded 500Mb/s. I did a lot of reading and researching as best I could before I bought the AC4000 and what I found indicated that it would be able to provide most of that gigabit connection but here, set up as I have it, not so much. Is there anything I can do to try to pump those numbers up? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Jun 2021 04:38 PM PDT I have a subscription service to MLB.TV. This grants me access to every single live MLB broadcast, except for the teams in my physical location's media market. Here is more info on it. MLB makes this very clear on their website. Before buying, I checked about a dozen times to make sure my physical location's zipcode (08648) was not in the NY media market. It's not. Therefore, I should not be barred access to watching teams like the Yankees and Mets. The problem is, I live in a part of NJ that is so close to the NY media market (5-10 miles away), that when my ISP changes my IP address to get the best connection, they constantly misrepresent my physical location. It's hit or miss whether or not I can actually watch the games I want to. As a result, I'm getting denied services that I paid for through no fault of my own. I called MLB, they said it's an ISP issue and I should tell my ISP to get me a "private IP address" that keeps me locked into one place. I don't even know if MLB understands what they said there but that's what they told me. I've been constantly fighting Fios on this whole issue. First they say they can do it, then they say they can't because I'm not a business customer, then they say "call customer service". So they are practically useless and I'm not trusting them to resolve anything. From a networking perspective, what settings or modifications can I make to my home network to keep my IP address in one physical spot? There's a netgear nighthawk router in my apartment. Verizon Fios looking for best router for under $500. Posted: 04 Jun 2021 04:21 PM PDT We use a lot of mobile devices and I really need the fastest WiFi connection I can get. Any suggestions for a router under $500? [link] [comments] |
Xfi v7 to netgear GS305EP to TP-Link Omada AC1750 open wifi help Posted: 04 Jun 2021 07:50 PM PDT I want to create 2 things - basement migration of media and gaming PC connected to 1st floor tv Basement window AC for wireless arlo security cameras Problem - hardwired the switch is PNP, when I connect the AC it is also PNP in the sense that it creates an open 2.4 and 5 ghz wifi ACs with their default names. I have used the proprietary software of both netgear and TP, and cant create a PW protected AC with better range. I want an AC with a name I choose and PW protected. I have entered SNs for each device on their respective programs and tried IPs from wireless and connected devices. I basically cannot make the devices do anything or connect to them, however, the PNP capabilities work fine. I now have wireless or wired connectivity... but I cant control, configure, or lockdown anything... I am a networking newb. Please help/ [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Jun 2021 04:00 PM PDT Trying to set up and I keep getting wrong password, I did the forgot password and reset it but setting up the router it keeps saying wrong password. I also tried factory reset. And using the router password also got wrong password. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Jun 2021 07:46 PM PDT Hi lads, I just set up a much needed wireless bridging system in my mother-in-law's countryside home. The root router is one of those unbranded devices that the ISP provides, and the bridging device is a TP-Link WR840N v2. So, I just followed these steps and got it working. OBS: for step 8, I set it as "192.168.30.1" OBS 2: for some reason, after changing the LAN IP address, I don't seem to be able to log into the router anymore. The address 192.168.30.1 doesn't load. How do I find the correct IP for logging in? So, it seems to work, partially. The problem is that is doesn't seem to work on all sites. For example, I can access Spotify, Netflix and Google search, but fails to load Twitter and Reddit (however, when I'm connected to the Wi-fi off the root router, it works fine (hence this post). When I try to ping some random sites, this is what happens. Does anybody have a clue as to why this is happening? Maybe a DNS issue? (but, if that's the case, would it not also affect the root router?) Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
Having tons of problems with TP-link Deco M9-Plus since firmware upgrade Posted: 04 Jun 2021 07:40 PM PDT Semi-non-Techie here. I've had the Deco M9-Plus for about a year now with almost no problems, until my wife started using Zoom more and more. She said her meetings would glitch and freeze, people couldn't hear her, etc. Then we both experienced randomly poor wifi calling problems on our cell phones. I upgraded the firmware on the Deco M9-Plus' (to 1.5.1 build20210126, which my app says is the most current) and holy schnitzel are we having major problems now!! ALL of our devices are randomly losing the wifi signal, and speed tests show as low as 1.5mbps! (however the Deco app says it is almost always 800mbps+, none of my devices are showing anything even close to that). TP-link support has been super not helpful, 3 times. I guess I'm just curious if anyone else is having similar issues after this firmware? Anyone have any suggestions of what to check? Thank you!! Edit: I just asked Google to turn off the light and it said "hang on while I get connected to wifi" I'm returning the Deco tomorrow. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Jun 2021 07:29 PM PDT Hi I'm planning to change the antenna of my router (who has a bridge mode) with a Wi-max mimo antenna, could it be possible? It will affect the speed of it from the original router? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Jun 2021 07:12 PM PDT Hi! I enjoy having speedy interwebs, but sadly my computer space is on the opposite side of the house from the modem. Mesh setups are pretty expensive, and since I play games I would like to hardwire. The 40ft ethernet cord is starting to get old. Thankfully I have a coaxial port in the room. The thing I'm trying to figure out though, is should I get a cable modem or a Moca adapter? I also read there was a little issue with the security of a moca. Lastly, could If all I needed was a moca could I also just setup another router in my computer room to speed up wifi for my ipad\phone\network? Thanks! I just don't want to buy 4 things to figure out what I need. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Jun 2021 06:06 PM PDT I recently bought a Netgear MR1100 hotspot thinking I could just throw it in bridge mode and replace my shitty USB modem with it. Which, I promptly did. While I wait on the second NIC for my real networking setup, I dusted off my Netgear R6220 running OpenWRT. The line that hotspot is on is meant for such things, and without a VPN running I get full speeds on everything connected to the network (aside from where T-Mo exploits the loss of net neutrality ofc). However once I turn on a VPN connection I'm throttled to exactly 0.5Mbps, whether that's wireguard or openvpn. I know the CPU in that thing is pathetic but it can definitely do more than that. Is there anything I can do or am I hosed? ETA: All VPN connections are throttled even if started from a device and not the router. [link] [comments] |
Unifi UDM Pro with disappeared previous threats Posted: 04 Jun 2021 01:42 PM PDT There used to be several previous threats in my Unifi UDM Pro portal but theyve recently disappeared. I find it highly unlikely that there are no new ones and previous ones disappeared. How do I troubleshoot this issue more? Also, is anyone using Endpoint Scans and Honeypot? I would love to learn more about how to use them but the documentation that ive found really doesnt explain much. What are your thoughts? [link] [comments] |
Help learning the fundamentals of networking? Posted: 04 Jun 2021 01:38 PM PDT Hi, I'm really interested in getting a more rigorous understanding of how home and enterprise networks work, and learning how to build and maintain them (installing a mesh network, clipping and running my own ethernet cables, managing a firewall, updating firmware). It feels like something I might even enjoy as a career someday. Is there a good online course, video series, textbook and/or vocational/community college program that teaches this kind of thing? TBH i'm not even sure where to start, or how experts like you all learned all this stuff in the first place... Any suggestions, personal stories, etc. would be helpful! [link] [comments] |
VLAN Concepts...seeking clarification/best practice Posted: 04 Jun 2021 01:24 PM PDT Just a few (hopefully) quick questions regarding VLANs and trusted networks. I'm planning to segment my home network into a few VLANs, to keep things orderly and a little more secure. Here's the gist:
Questions:
My primary goal for going with VLANs is to isolate the public-facing web server, IP cameras, and IoT devices from the rest of the network. I'm not too concerned with QoS, etc. Everything else is gravy. Edit: Here's a rough draft network diagram [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Jun 2021 05:09 PM PDT Hi sub, This past week I started creating a series of infographics supporting my way through CompTIA Network+ studies. Some friends have the idea of a private study group and I'm the only one that knows a bit of Illustrator and Corel Draw so I'll be responsible to create those infographics that eventually will be printed to have as a quick reference. I know there are a bunch of already existing infographics online that we could find useful but we decided to create our own as we go through each chapter/subject/area and we decided to make the infographics public as a small contribution from our side to those starting to learn networking as well. Keep in mind that, although some information could seem outdated, it is still being tested in the mentioned certification so it is still required to be studied. ------------------------------------------------------------- The infographics that I've created so far are:
------------------------------------------------------------- You could access the library from here. ------------------------------------------------------------- Any suggestions, ideas, fixes or anything that could be useful to improve the material are highly appreciated. SSL certificate invalid across all devices on network Posted: 04 Jun 2021 05:07 PM PDT I am able to access websites without receiving an invalid certificate message when I am on my phone's cellular data. However, when I use WiFi or Ethernet I run into certificate errors across all websites and I can't use some of my apps. [link] [comments] |
What Should I Look For if I Suspect A Home Network Breach? Posted: 04 Jun 2021 08:16 AM PDT A few days ago, I noticed someone trying to brute force log in to a postgres database on my work computer. This was behind the router's firewall with no ports forwarded. I installed Wireshark and noticed various IP addresses doing naughty things like port knocking and attempting to brute force other ports associated with things like e.g. remote desktop services. Because I was seeing port knocking and not something that looks like wholesale data exfiltration or ransomware, I am working under the assumption that it's a network breach exploiting a vulnerability in my router firmware instead of malware on my work computer. A MalwareBytes scan came up empty as well. I've updated the factory firmware and then flashed dd-wrt to the router and I've been obsessively examining traffic (wireshark) on various computers in my LAN but I haven't see anything that really sticks out since updating the factory firmware. I have a little script that collects all of the IP addresses that my computer talks to and checks www.abuseipdb.com. Some of the IPs I'm seeing have medium confidence of abuse, but nothing is like 100% THIS IS DEFINITELY NAUGHTY IP rating, and they are all owned by someone that I could see having legitimate reason for my computer to connect to. I have lots of traffic data sitting around that I wish I could analyze but this is not something I'm competent in. Anyone have any pointers? [link] [comments] |
Router > access point GUI access Posted: 04 Jun 2021 04:58 PM PDT I recently configured a TPLink Archer C7 to be an access point to a shiny new Asus RT-AX58U. I've got them both up and running correctly, but I've noticed I can no longer access the TPLink's settings GUI by typing its IP into my web browser. I did give it a static IP of 192.168.0.254 from the default 192.168.0.1, but the connection to either address times out. I'd still like to get back into the settings and change SSIDs on the TPLink to match those on the Asus, thus extending the Asus's WiFi network. Does anyone know how to access the TPLink's GUI as an access point, without factory resetting it and starting from scratch? Edit: grammar [link] [comments] |
