is it worth spending an extra $400 more on a laptop with upgradable sodimm ram or 32gb compared to getting the 16gb which is already slightly above my budget ?

For general use , engineering softwares, whatever free games that will be available / AAA games that are given for free after a few years like arkham knight or gta.

2.5 inch HDD slot compatible for 2.5 inch SSD upgrade?

    Posted: 31 May 2021 12:54 PM PDT

Hi, I'm using a HP Omen 15 (2016) and I started getting a Smart Hard Disk Error 302 recently and was thinking of replacing my HDD. I'm also planning to build a PC soon and was thinking if it would be possible to fit a 2.5 inch internal SSD into the HDD slot of my laptop as well as a desktop when I do start building it.

Best laptop for at least 4 years of usage within $800

    Posted: 31 May 2021 11:31 AM PDT

Hello I'm going to start university soon. I need a budget laptop within $800 for programming. I was considering the t14 but at $815 the specs are really bad (8/128 gb storage; ryzen 5 and the display is really bad). I was thinking if ideapad 5 14 will be a better choice? Or a thinkbook 14 gen 2? Or a thinkpad E 14? The specs on these are good and what I'm looking for. However, my concern is the build quality of them. I want the laptop to last at least 4 years. Please help me out. Not really an expert on these matters. Please suggest me which one should i get or any other good ones within my budget. Thank you

I just got a new SSD (Crucial P5 500gb) but I only get speeds of max 450 mb/s read and write on my laptop.

    Posted: 31 May 2021 10:36 AM PDT

I inserted it into the M.2 M-Key Slot and double checked in the BIOS but I can't get it to be as fast as the advertised speeds.

    Laptop for school

    Posted: 31 May 2021 01:59 PM PDT

I'm starting grad school in a few months and I need a new laptop. My old laptop was some gaming laptop that was heavy with poor battery life and overheating so I don't want anything like that. After doing some research I'm close to buying one of these - Yoga 9i 14" 2 in 1 Laptops | Built on Intel Evo | Lenovo US . I already have a pretty decent desktop at home so this computer doesn't have to be something super crazy or anything. Does anyone have experience with these laptops?

What do people do with their desktops

    Posted: 31 May 2021 01:41 PM PDT

Hi. I've been a desktop user for all of my life. But now that I have to travel for work, I need to figure out a plan for the desktop before I purchase a laptop.

For context, I'm in Ontario Canada and would prefer not just bin the technology.

Are there any trade in programs or places where I can drop off the rig before I make my laptop purchase?

Is it normal for laptop performance to get worse?

    Posted: 31 May 2021 01:20 PM PDT

I know laptops have an age where they start to absolutely suck at running certain stuff. There was a point last year where my laptop that is 8 GB RAM and 256 GB SSD just stopped functioning like it used to. I was able to run discord calls and games too at the same time with little to no issues but then last year it suddenly just couldn't run any game with my discord calls, even smaller games like stardew and terraria and my memory on task manager would be around 75-90%

Is it normal for old laptops to do this? It was about under 4 years old when these issues started happening but it's now a 5 year old laptop

Need a laptop for college without sacrificing the luxuries of my home setup.

    Posted: 31 May 2021 12:24 PM PDT

Hey y'all, new to this sub, and I need some help with a p important decision. This August, I'm starting college and moving to a college dorm with a 24"x42" desk and adjacent 29"x24" dresser I can also use for my new setup, although the less space used the better. I want the convenience and ease of use of a laptop while still having a mechanical keyboard and large monitor. The main games I play are League of Legends (don't laugh at me), Subnautica, civ 6, and a ton of indie games, so good performance is important but doesn't need to be too insanely powerful. Large storage is crucial, and long battery life on low-power mode for class is similarly important. Budget is subject to change but I generally want to keep it in the 1k-1.5k range for the full setup, but feel free to give suggestions below or above that. Thanks so much for your help!

Just got a Lenovo Yoga 7i (2 in 1) 14" 16GB ram 512GB. Great laptop, but a bit disappointed... should I exchange for an HP envy 360x 13"?

    Posted: 31 May 2021 12:22 PM PDT

Just got a Lenovo Yoga 7i (2 in 1) 14" 16GB ram 512GB. Great laptop, but a bit disappointed... should I exchange for an HP envy 360x 13"?

In general, I'm happy with the purchase. It seems to be a very solid and good laptop. But just to get some ideas of what you would do, or what you think...

The things that disappointed me the most:

    - Screen has a lot of glare. Just working near a window, inside, even without daylight reflecting straight on the screen, I still have to put the brightness almost to 100% to work comfortably.

    - Battery is not as great as advertised. I decided to buy it at the store, and it said 16 hours. I know this is just a test playing a video continuously. I'm getting perhaps 8-9 hours just web browsing, typing and youtube. I was expecting a bit better. Of course battery must last less because I have to use it almost full brightness during the day.

    - Few ports. Obviously I knew that when I decided to buy it, not the end of the world... maybe I could regret?

    - Heavy. I should be taking it to college every day, and also to travel after I get vaccinated. I'm upgrading from an old tiny Surface 3, so this Lenovo looks huge! (I'll be using it mainly to study, nothing too demanding).

Computers in Italy are more expensive than in the US. I paid 900 euros (1100 dollars) it usually costs more than 1000 euros!

I could get an HP envy 360 13" (8GB ram 512 GB) for 750 euros. It's a bit smaller, slimmer and lighter.

Well... I'm just lamenting a bit. Also, I feel a bit bad for exchanging it, even though the store seems to have the policy of letting us exchange for any reason.

If you could share any ideas!

New job: Mac 16" vs XPS 15

    Posted: 31 May 2021 04:31 AM PDT

Hi there, so I'm starting a new job soon. It's not software development related, most of the tools I'll require will be around creating and presenting slides, project management software and crunching data for data analysis (most likely in Excel).

The company gives me two options:

    • Macbook Pro 16" with i7/32Gb RAM/512 Gb
    • Dell XPS 15 with i7/16Gb RAM/512 Gb SSD

The thing is I've never seriously used a mac before. Never worked with it and I don't know if switching now would make sense. I'm familiar with Windows shortcuts already, but I don't expect it to be too difficult to get used to a mac anyway.

I would appreciate any comments and opinions here, being able to play some games is a plus but should not really be the deciding factor.

    Thanks!

Does the stickiness due to a drink spilling over keyboard go away with time?

    Posted: 31 May 2021 08:11 AM PDT

I spilled very small amount of juice (mainly leftover ice) on my laptop keyboards a couple of days ago and most of it is working the same way but a few keys feel a little off, Will the slight imperfectness go away as it gets regularly used? I know keys can be removed and cleaned but I don't have the courage to risk breaking them off as it is a new laptop. Is there some way I can clean it without taking them off?

Honestly an average user might not even notice the slight difference but things like these really run in my head and doesn't let me focus on other things that is why I need some assurance that it will be fine.

Dell Inspiron 15 3000 no boot device

    Posted: 31 May 2021 11:24 AM PDT

I had the HDD swapped with an SSD. It was working fine for a few weeks, until I turned it on and it said no boot device found. But in bios, system information, device info, the SSD is marked under SATA-0, so I knows it's there. Any help to fix it?

External monitor via USB - MSI GF65 Thin 10 SDR

    Posted: 31 May 2021 10:59 AM PDT

Hi! I'm pretty new to PCs, and I had a tech question about connecting an external monitor to my PC (MSI GF65 Thin 10 SDR). I wanted to use 2 external monitor, and since I already have one plugged in the HDMI port I was wondering how could I connect the other one to my pc.

I wanted to use my USB port, since my USB-C port doesn't support Thunderbolt (or so have I read). Would a USB-HDMI adapter work? Is there a better get-around?

Im looking for a good laptop for school use

    Posted: 31 May 2021 09:44 AM PDT

Hello, as stated in the title I am looking for a laptop which I can use for school. I'd prefer a lot of battery life.

Performance wise I'm not looking for anything super impressive as I'm not using it for gaming. But I would like a good amount of storage space.

    Lenovo Idepad 310 problem

    Posted: 31 May 2021 09:13 AM PDT

Hello! This laptop has been with me for over 3 yrs and we reformat it many times since it always causes problem such as not turning on or the blue screen. Most of the time the blue screen is usually the problem. Right now, we've reformatted it a couple months ago and it's doing good but they said I'm not allowed to play and download games since the screen won't be able to handle it or it may cause harm on laptop.

My problem is that should I take the risk to download games? Previously, the games that I've downloaded were the sims and genshin impact but their graphics are in low settings.

Is 12 GB of ram bad?

    Posted: 30 May 2021 01:58 PM PDT

I'm looking into buying a new laptop, preferably 2 in 1 Lenovo laptop. There is a nice deal for one that is 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB SSD. Both numbers are upgrades from my current laptop, however, I've been told that 12 GB of ram is an odd number and that 8 GB of ram can actually run better sometimes.

The price is $900 for that laptop right now. If I decide to bump it up into 16 GB, I have to bump the SSD to 1 TB as well, making the price to be around $1.3k. I typically like to buy the best specs, but i am also a college student that really doesn't have an income over the school year. Is it worth bumping my budget up to $400 to avoid that odd number of RAM? I don't want to have 8 GB of ram because my current laptop has that and over the years, some stuff runs way too slow. 12 GB seemed great for me, but after reading a lot, majority has recommended to just go to 8 or bump to 16

For context, I do game and do work on my laptop, mostly work though. I think the heaviest game I've played is R6 and it used to be able to run on my laptop but now it's struggling.

Looking for a windows 10 laptop under 350 that can be upgraded with ram or ssd in the future.

    Posted: 31 May 2021 09:01 AM PDT

Hello, I am trying to find a laptop, preferably with 15.6 inches that runs windows for a family member. Their budget is 350$ sadly and since I want to make sure I can help them I am trying to find laptops that you can upgrade the ram or change the hdd for ssd.

The use is mostly light web browsing , at most watch youtube videos and using word or excel. I am really hard limited at 350 snce my family member is an old person and cannot push it harder than that. I am searching mostly on amazon, walmart and bestbuy , new is prefferred but at this price point refurbished is a choice.

All I can find on my searches are chromebooks or devices that I cannot find if I can replace the ssd or hdd inside them (in example devices with emmc storage). Any suggestion anyone can make would help me greatly , thank you :).
