Starting to get worried I may have been hacked or something? I'm really not privy to technical stuff. I also live with 4 guys who all have laptops and gaming devices, so maybe they're just seeing there's too many things using the network? Please advise.

    Rural help

    Posted:

Hello r/homenetworking I am moving to a rural area to help my grandparents that live on my uncle's farm. It is a couple miles from a cell tower but I get no reception out there. And the internet is slow satellite. What is the best way to boost the internet and cell signal? I am sorry if this seems like a dumb question I am really trying to help them and myself.

Looking for a backup program that is easy to use.

    Posted:

I am currently using Macrium Reflect to backup my C: drive and a separate data drive to my NAS. I've set it up before only to find it stopped working, apparently without notifying me or that I missed the notice. And I find the interface very hard to use as I only look at it sporadically. Is there another backup program that makes it easier to set up and monitor the backups. I'm willing to pay for the program as long as I can be sure it is working reliably.

    Extending Wifi Coverage Help

    Posted:

While my router gives decent speeds, it unfortunately can't cover my entire house. The router is placed on the very front of the house, and there is significant distance between the end of the house where I am trying to get wifi coverage to. I've been reading and saw that wifi extenders are definitely not the best option, as much as I would like to use the ethernet + AP method, I can't run an ethernet cable as the area coverage needed is too far and would be a bigger issue to try to set up. Also moving the router isn't an option unfortunately. I am considering powerlines, but I don't know if that's the best way to go about this, mesh networks could be another option but again I'm not entirely sure. I am aware wired over wireless is always more efficient, but in this circumstances wired is complex to setup. What is the best solution to this problem?

Remote setup of Google Nest WiFi

    Posted:

I have an Uncle in another country and I'm curious if there would be a way to help him set up the Mesh network (he's getting the Google Nest WiFi system) remotely from the USA. He's not all that savvy. He already has a Google Home setup so I am thinking it would be easy for him but he isn't comfortable with it.

    Any thoughts?

What to tell the tech when they show up

    Posted:

Im having serious issues with my internet and have been talking with support without much help. Im currently in the process of having a tech come out again, however; the past three times I havnt had any resolution. Ive explained that im getting large amounts of T3 and T4 errors as well as large number of correctables and uncorrectables across all channels. The issue is that these problems are intermittent and dont come around when the tech is here and plugged into our inbound line (for all of five seconds). I have finally had tech support remotely identify what was going on while I was having a disconnect, but im worried that wont translate to any different action by the tech. Any suggestions on what to say/do to actually get a resolution?

What is network deauthentication/disassociation and BSS transition

    Posted:

My son has an iPhone 11 and has a network deauthentication count of 28 within the last 3 days and a disassociation count of 560. My iPhone X and my wife's IPhone 8 have a deauthentication count of 0 and about the same disassociation counts (mine is 160 hers is 163). I've also noticed a log stating [wifi0] BSS Transition Response accepted [from_ap=xx:xx:xx:xx:e3:7a sta=xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx dest_ap=xx:xx:xx:xx:e3:71 status=0 token=134] what is network deauthentication and disassociation and what could cause it. And is that destination access point something I should worry about? We have at&t internet with their gateway. I'm not sure if maybe my son is disconnecting from the internet to avoid me seeing his activity from xhamster or an attack on his device?

Which modern wiFi systems work when internet is down? I'm considering eero.

    Posted:

My ISP has outages a little too often for my liking, but I don't really have another option in my area. And with the coming post-apocalyptic shutdown or whatever I am expecting more frequent and longer outages.

Will an eero or any other of the new mesh router network boxes keep my wifi functioning locally in my house (for wifi printing, file sharing, streaming from my own network, smart devices etc.) when the internet connection is down?

My old Linksys router does this fine but I am nervous about this cloud based stuff.

    Any experiences appreciated!

Picking networking equipment for new (to me) home

    Posted:

    Evening everyone,

I'm getting ready to get my new (to me) home ready for some serious networking and wanted to run my plan by everyone, and get some feedback on the ideas and equipment.

    The inside environment:

    A total of 3 floors.

    1) Top floor, a few bedrooms which are attached to a hallway overlooking a great room

    2) Main floor, great room is central and the rooms mostly branch off that one

    3) Fully finished basement

In total there is about 5k square feet across all three levels. Nothing special about the construction.

In addition to the internal environment.

    1) I have a yard I would like to ensure has coverage

    2) I am in LOS of the neighborhood common area, I was thinking about adding more targeted antenna so I could better access my network. Distance is... 200-300ft

So that covers basic wifi coverage, lets talk about what the network needs to do..

    1) Streaming to TVs

1.a) Both from a media server & streaming services

    2) normal laptop usage for work and fun

    3) 10+ POE Security Cameras, interior and exterior (no specific model picked out yet)

I'm also getting my homelab setup. I've currently got OPNSense running on the box, and have it hooked up to a consumer netgear wireless router in AP mode. I'm looking to upgrade this setup as well as the overall network.

This rack and the server will be in the basement, the cameras will be mostly coming out of the sofits so on the top floor for the most part.

So the first challenge is to run Cat6 (7?) from the basement to the attic. If all cables run this way, then across the whole has to the attic the total run would end up being < 100ft. At this point I do not think there is a location in the house I can easily run a conduit up through the wall.

It may be easier overall to run a single cable to the attic and connect this to a different POE switch to service the cameras and an AP for the top floor. The switch would be inside whichever closet I can easily get power to.

First question: Is this a bad idea or should I plan on running a cable for each device through the conduit from the basement?

    Next Question: Connectivity.

I'll be running jacks to all the devices which are stationary and easily accessible. TVs and my office mostly.

The big question is APs... My only hard requirement is nothing that requires an App or Cloud connectivity, I'm paranoid about companies bricking my hardware.

I'm leaning towards TP-Link Omada, not sure the exact model but I'd love feedback. I'm thinking I would need one to cover the top floor, and the first floor by mounting it in the great room, and at least one or the basement (long term a second one is probably required since the floor is much more closed).

    Next Question: The switch(s)

So I'm looking at a potential total of 13+ POE devices either spread over two switches or one larger one in the basement. I'd like it to have management capabilities sufficient for VLANs but I'm just not sure which switch is a good buy.

There seems to be alot of old dell switches going in /r/homelabsales and ebay and the like. Should I consider those over the larger TP-Link or other switches?

In the end my goals are:

    1) A network that provides good coverage throughout the house

    2) Some future proofing

    3) Sufficient capabilities that I can get myself in trouble! (Experimentation and learnings)

How wrong am I doing this... Any other suggestions?

Does the quality of your modem/ router matter if you just use Ethernet?

Sorry if this is a dumb question. I use Shaw as an ISP, and use the router they give you for free. I use Ethernet for everything except my phone, but I really only use it for calling and texting. I know that the wires going to the router matter, but, no matter what the router is, can you just plug in Ethernet and have the same results with a more expensive router? Thank you

Living rurally, the only other network near me is a very weak 2.4GHz on channel 1. Should I set my 2.4GHz AP to 40MHz, and if so, which channel do I select?

    Posted:

We have a pretty large house and yard as well as a ton of devices. The 5GHz AP is only suitable for devices within sight of the router, and even then sometimes my phone and laptop still prefer the 2.4GHz AP.

Best way to get Ethernet cables in rooms?

    Posted:

We just moved into a house that was built in around late 90s so of course Ethernet cabling was never done even during 2008 renovation.

I work in Cybersecurity so I'm almost always working with tons of different devices and so on so I need hard wired cables almost all the time. Right now I'm doing just fine with TP-Link Powerline adapters and putting a switch in between devices and adapter.

Currently, there is Coax in each room thank god so there is a chance for MOCA. Problem is that main line is and main splitter is literally by the garage on the outside. Plus whoever did the cabling is making my head spin. There is literally 3 cables that are running from the splitter. One going to the master bedroom, one going to the other room and one going to the satellite dish they had installed previously. But somehow in the attic, they got a splitter with 3 other cables going somewhere which I don't see them being terminated literally anywhere so either they closed the end points orrrr they weren't installed properly?

Do you guys think it's cheaper and easiest to put a MoCA at the router and one at the splitter then put a switch in the garage and just run the CAT6 from the outside instead of tearing down the walls?

Existing cabling minus the attic's unknown cabling destination: https://m.imgur.com/a/Nxw70HB

PoE Switch vs Non-PoE Switch + PoE Injector?

    Posted:

I want to replace my dumb 24 port GbE switch with a managed one for VLANs etc. I would like at least one 10GbE uplink for future proofing.

I have 2 PoE devices currently: EdgeRouter-X and UniFi AP AC Lite. They are powered using the provided PoE injector. In a year or two I plan to move home and as part of that process I'll likely get another 2-3 WiFi APs and a few PoE security cameras.

Given these requirements and the fact that I want modern equipment with low power usage and noise, I think I only really have two choices without spending much more:

    Mikrotik CRS328-24P-4S+RM

    • Cost: ~£300
    • Idle power consumption: 25W
    • Noise: Fans that may or may not be too loud in default configuration (reviews vary)
    • Rack space: 1U

    Mikrotik CSS326-24G-2S+RM & PoE-Texas GPOE-12

    • Upfront cost: ~£100 now + ~£150 when more PoE required (including extra cables & DC adapter)
    • Idle power consumption: 6W + ??W from DC adapter
    • Noise: None (passive)
    • Rack space: 2U

It seems every other switch in these price ranges don't have SFP+ uplinks so these win quite easily. Based on the above, the second option seems to win in every aspect except taking up extra rack space. It's a bit cheaper upfront, produces less heat, costs less to run, and is quieter. I can also just not buy the PoE injector until I actually need it (by which point I'll know the requirements more specifically). The extra 2 SFP+ ports of the CRS326-24P-4S+RM might be useful but it seems unlikely given I only have 2 10GbE devices now and both are copper, so if I were to get a 10GbE switch in the future it'd probably be a 10GbE copper switch with an SFP uplink.

Is there any factor I've overlooked in my comparison that might swing me the other way?

Bought a home with a Qolsys IQ Panel and don't want it. How to conceal?

    Posted:

There's wiring through the walls to this central hallway location where the panel is located and I don't want this system. If I take it off there's just going to be a wall with a hole in it and some wires and I'm not sure what to do. I don't have a plan for a replacement system yet, so I'm not sure I'd use that wiring anyways.

TL-R600VPN Bandwidth control - preferably by allowing some devices minimum bandwidth

    Posted:

Hi, I couldn't find something that would anser my issue (or I haven't put a proper words into search engine - sorry if that's the case).

Let me explain what I'm trying to do with what I have:

    - Router is TL-R600VPN - so technically robust one, but I'm a complete amateur when it comes to networking stuff.

    - I want to have 3 machines that have "guarranteed" upload bandwith when they are uploading (video streaming to the server, RMTP protocol)

    - I have 60Mbps upload, and I doubt I would be able to find anyone that would give me more right now where I am - so every Mbps counts for video streaming/uploading

    - there are other machines on the network like:

    a) Synology DS 412 (backup, syncs with GDrive occasionally, almost never uploads anything, mostly downloads)

    b) PCs/laptops that are multi-purpose (sometimes they download videos, sometimes upload videos, mostly just do something on their own or with Synology over Gigabit); when they upload, it's 1+GB/file

Issue is - when YT/WeTransfer/MyAirBridge/browser GDrive/other comes into play on one of "b)" computers, machines for streaming video lose the bandwidth (dropped frames, bandwidth in i.e. OBS/vMix goes to 100-0kbps from 2-5Mbps)

Proper question - Can I set up TL-R600VPN ver.4 in such way that it would either:

prioritize rtmp streaming from any PC; or

set up bandwidth control as "minimum bandwidth that can be used by chosen 3 machines so that other computers wouldn't clog up the connection"; or

set browser-based (so far the only culprit I've noticed) uploading as low-priority?

If possible, I would like to have full 60Mbps available when not streaming anything since for video upload turns out it's often slow.

Again, sorry if It was answered already, my english (and tech english) is not great.

Moved house recently and we need a solution for WiFi deadspots. Should I go all in and wire ethernet and APs through the whole house or go for an off the shelf wireless mesh system?

    Posted:

I've had a quick search through this sub and couldn't quite find a post with this predicament, so posting in the hope for some good advice.

The problem: UK based, old 19th century house has been extended and extended over the years, so has quite a long footprint.

One router does not cover whole house.

Powerline adapters/extenders not an option as I've already tried this. The power cabling isn't up to it as a 75 mbps connection drops to 0.5-2.5 mbps on the other side.

Currently I have the main router at front of house, a powerline in the only socket that's ok towards the back of the house which is connected to a second router running as an AP. Although it has improved the WiFi in some areas, I'm still dealing with deadspots, unsurprisingly.

So, the current options I'm considering:

Option 01 - Invest in proper wired ethernet and APs. This would mean paying someone to run ethernet lines to every room (two rooms on the ground floor, four rooms upstairs). I'd want to have both Ethernet ports and PoE cabling for APs. Obviously I'd also need switches, APs and time to get it all running myself.

Option 02 - Just buy one of those no fuss wireless mesh systems - set and forget.

My question is which one is cost effective? I've no idea what I should be looking at paying for either option. I'm not a pro network guy, but I've studied a bit. I've got Pi-Hole, PiVPN and recently started playing with VMs. I run a Plex media server which I share with my parents and in-laws. Have thought about virtualising some of this stuff in a homelab with all bells and whistles but jeez... I'm on a budget.

Any opinions would be most helpful at this time. Cheers!

    Linksys AC5400 vs Fios Router

I have a Linksys AC5400 router already that has served me well and i wish to keep using but was wondering since the router rental is free and theres disclaimer that "a non verizon router" may not work as well or allow for certain features, if it would be worth it to use mine.

    Wireless routers with openVPN support?

    TPLink Cloud Access

    Posted:

Recently picked up an Archer AX6000 and upon opening the Tether app, it bound remote access to my TPLink ID. TPLink said I can still use the Tether app unbound so I would only be able to access while connected to the WiFi then.

Anyone using TPLink Remote Access via the Tether app? Wondering if it's secure. Having your router exposed to the outside world seems like a bad idea unless there's other protections in place I don't know about.

Asus routers work the same way but I removed the access and disabled WAN access.

So uhhh, I need To extend my wifi. Was gonna buy a ubiquiti aP. Scratch that or?

    Posted:

Just wanna start by saying that I know jack shit about networking. If there is something less than layman then that's probably where I'm at.

Basically though I have been running into wi-fi range problems in my house and was looking at the best options to increase it. In my super basic research on Reddit it seemed generally best option was to setup a wired Ethernet access point. I saw many recommendations of ubiquiti APs on Reddit and pretty much everywhere so I was gonna go that route.

I've only started looking at WiFi stuff the last few days and I saw the thread stickies here. If I'm being honest, I have no idea what this breach means for consumers and if I should try and purchase another product. Do you guys have other recommendations for good APs? Or is it something I really shouldn't worry about?

Looking to purchase a new modem and a router (not a combo)

    Posted:

As the title says... Lately I have been experiencing tons of issues with my comcast provided gateway and figure that its about time I just buy a modem and a router of my own.

I have done a little research and it seems like I definitely want to go for something DOCSIS 3.1. But not really sure what else I should worry about for my home network.

I will say I bought a combo surfboard a while back and that left a sour taste in my mouth so I want to stay away from combo devices.

If it is any help, currently have 750 down plan for Xfinity. Unlimited data. I usually have two PCs running games most of the time, and sometimes a 4k stream going as well. We usually hit above 1.2Tb a month in data so definitely want something that can support good speeds. Open to any suggestions.

Was only able to connect to my Xfinity gateway on desktop after splitting 5GHz and 2.4GHz SSIDs - any reason why?

    Posted:

Most of the context is in the title. I haven't had any issues with connectivity apart from the occasional dip in wifi fidelity over the past few months. Over the past two weeks though, I (and all of my roommates) were experiencing extreme slowdown (about 10x slower than nominal speeds) and eventually the internet died yesterday. Comcast tech came out, swapped the gateway, and I still wasn't able to get internet with my desktop (AX200 Wifi 6 card), or with ethernet plugged in.

I decided to split the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands on a whim, and for some reason that was the ticket, and I can now use the internet again. Is there any known issue with WIfi 6 cards and proper band steering on Wifi 5 routers? I was able to connect with my laptop, and my roommate was able to connect with his laptop; it was just my desktop that was having issues.
