College student looking for a 16:10 laptop for web dev and autoCad

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 07:29 PM PDT

Hi I'm an engineering student looking to upgrade my 8 year old Dell Inspiron 15R.

My budget is around $1k. The 3 most important things I want in this new laptop: - A good 16:10 ratio screen, about 14" - A nice keyboard with decent travel and dedicated home end buttons near the arrows key - 16gb ram

Since I use my laptop about 8hr/day, I want one that has a nice screen. I prefer a 16:10 ratio because I can maximize productivity when it comes to coding, reading pdf..

I want dedicated Home/End buttons near the Arrows keys because it's very convenient when I code.

A dedicated gpu would be nice for autoCad and some light 3D modeling software. I don't plan on gaming on this laptop.

I've looked at most brands but it seem only HP has the keyboard layout that I want, namely the Envy and Spectre. They also have nice 16:10 screens. Tho I'm not fond of the design of Spectre and price tag.

The Envy 14 seems to have what I want, i5 11th gen, 16gb ram, GTX 1650 maxQ, 256gb ssd at $1200. I do like the overall design of it, especially the amount of ports. (I use a portable monitor with my laptop)

The price is a bit high. I can still afford it but is it a good choice? I'm wondering if there is any better options out there. Thanks in advance.

[USA] Looking for a gaming/school laptop around $1200 or $1300

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 11:47 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      $1400-$1500 after tax
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
I would prefer new if possible unless there's a hella good deal
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I don't care much for 2 in 1 or whatever I just want a normal laptop
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
moderately important. I don't want to feel like Sisyphus rolling a 3 ton laptop up flights of stairs
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      around 15 inches
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Other than standard college stuff such as writing essays and whatnot I will mostly be gaming and programming on the laptop
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
The only games I would really play is osu! at high ish settings and i would like atleast 960 fps in that and minecraft(mainly hypixel skyblock but its not as important to me)
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
The screen needs to be at least 120hz because at this point I cant go back to 60hz. A fingerprint sensor would be nice but I can always just get a usb one. A ryzen processor would be great if possible for the increased battery life and overall performance too. Oh and unfortunately i need a webcam, if I didn't I would've probably bought the rog zephyrus.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I found a couple laptops such as this one from hp but the ryzen 5 rtx 3060 option for ~$1200 isn't there anymore and its now really pushing my bank account if I were to get the r7 3070 version. Lastly if possible I would love to be able to upgrade the storage/ram eventually if it comes too small at first

Conventional laptop, decent battery life, but good build quality and performance.

Looking for a laptop under 2000USD that can smoothly run games + for university work

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 08:45 AM PDT

So my current laptop is pretty shitty and I'll be moving out next year for college, so I thought instead of buying a PC or a PS5, I might as well just invest in a more powerful laptop. I have tried to do my own independent research on this but these websites im looking at all have referral links and I'm thinking that some websites may be sponsored, so I don't know if those are good sources. Just purely based on specs and ability to run games, what's the best laptop I can get with a budget of let's say around 1800$?

edit: here is some more detail as I was requested by mod bot

2000 dollar budget. I will be buying from Saudi Arabia. (2000 dollars is about 7500 riyals)

Not open to buying used laptops

I am not prioritizing build quality (like thinness, aesthetics, touchscreen, folding, weight). I am mostly prioritizing performance

I don't necessarily care about battery life that much, as long as it isn't completely abysmal. More than 6 hours will do.

No preferred screen size, since I will be buying a monitor to connect to the laptop.

On that note, the hz of the display on the laptop is irrelevant to me, since I'm definitely buying a monitor

No photo or video editing, only gaming. I play all kinds of games, but mostly Rocket League. I don't know what FPS I'd want, just whatever the best I can reach for this price range is.

    No specific requirements

    Thanks!

Lenovo legion 5 pro Keyboard and screen problem, please help me guys.

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 12:30 AM PDT

Hello, I got my Lenovo legion 5 pro yesterday. Do any of you who have the same laptop or any other lenovo legion experienced this problem ? The keyboard seems to flex a little bit when i type in the WASD-caps lock-tab region, i even see the 1234 buttons move a little bit when i press E, the other parts of the keyboard flex as well, but its the worst in the wasd area. Also, i don't know, because i come from a normal lcd screen, but is this backlight bleed ? In the picture it looks a bit worse, but with my eyes i can see the bottom right region being a bit too iluminted. Please guys, tell me if i should return this asap, i must inform the store in max 48h of any defect. I understand there should be a little flex in all laptop keyboards, but my asus x556ub (below 450$) is not flexing at all and its a low end laptop from 2016, i bought the lenovo for ~1.6k $ and i was expecting better build quality for that price. For comparision, my roomate got an asus rog strix 2020 version, his doesnt flex at all (1350$).

    Sager NP7858PQ-S - good deal?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 08:40 PM PDT

The Sager NP7858PQ-S looks like a really good deal. For $1631.03:

    i7-10870H (8 cores)
    RTX 3060 (105W)
    32GB DDR4 2933MHz
    1TB PCIe NVMe SSD
    1TB 7200rpm HDD

It feels like this should be $400 more. What am I missing? It the build quality terrible? Is it just a lesser known name? Am I going insane?

    A powerful all-rounder

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 11:02 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      AUD$ 3,000-6,000
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Yes, so long as it's from a retailer and not a private seller.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Battery Life and Performance are top priority, a 2-in-1 would be optimal.
I will be travelling for work a fair bit, so a battery life greater than 5 or 6 hours would be great if possible.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Vital, but with wiggle room. I will use this for uni/work among other things, so it needs to comfortably fit in my backpack.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      13 inch to 15.6 inch.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Heavy gaming (Battlefield, Kingdom Come: Deliverance, whatever the latest RPG or FPS is.
Photoshop, Adobe suite, video rendering, etc also vital.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
see above, @ 60FPS or greater on at-least medium-high settings.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I intend to use this for digital art, so a touch screen compatible with an Art stylus that has pressure sensitivity (Wacom, apple pencil, etc).
A backlit keyboard would also be nice.
Other feature requirements: Thunderbolt 3 port or higher, at least two usb ports, a dedicated GPU (doesn't have to be the best), HDMI (any).
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I intend on using this to replace all my existing hardware. I'm looking to replace the laptop I use for uni (only good for word processing and netflix), the gaming PC (now pretty old, circa 2011), my art tablet (A Wacom), and I'll need it for video processing and editing. I intend on enhancing it's capability for gaming/video processing by hooking it up to a desktop setting with an external monitor and an eGPU (hence the thunderbolt 3) If such a miracle 2-in-1 exists, I will spare no expense.

Thank you for your time. My apologies if I have the completely wrong idea, as I have not gone for a major upgrade in a decade, so the changes in hardware capability have overtaken my understanding.

Looking for a ~$1000 laptop for school, work, and some gaming

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 09:47 PM PDT

Since I'm going to be spending significant time between work and school in the foreseeable future and I've saved up quite a bit of money over the pandemic, I've decided to treat myself to a decent new laptop. I was looking to get a ROG Zephyrus 14 when they were on sale, but I came to the conclusion that they're far too ugly and unprofessional for my liking. I was then considering a Razer Blade before soon deciding that I didn't want to deal with the gamer QC I'm all too accustomed to when it comes to buying from a gaming peripheral company. I'm currently looking at the ThinkPad X1 Extreme and I think it fits my needs rather well -- powerful mobile workstation with great build quality and the ability to occasionally handle a game or two pretty easily. With that being said it's a little bit more costly than I'd like, so I'd love to see any suggestions for possible alternatives.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

~$1000 US, give or take a couple hundred.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

A somewhat light form factor and decent to high build quality are necessities to me. Performance is important, but I don't need the best performance possible at my budget (not looking for a gaming PC). I'm fine with any battery capacity that isn't completely miserable (like that of current HP Spectres w/ dedicated graphics).

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

I'd like for my PC to be under 4.5 lbs. I'd consider ~4.5-5 lbs, anything above that is a deal breaker.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    Preferably 15.6" and smaller.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I'll be doing some gaming. Nothing that'll require more than like a MX450 or a 1650 Max-Q, though.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

No games that I can think of in particular, but again, I don't see myself needing a top of the line GPU.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Reliable build quality is a must.

3d Animation, Streaming and some Gaming

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 09:34 PM PDT

    Mostly Animating and Video Editing

    📷Valid Form

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1000 and under. JAPAN or Amazon
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications for the money, please. I am planning to use it mostly plugged.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I don't care about how heavy it is. Im not planning to move it around so much on a daily basis.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I mostly work with Animate CC, Photoshop, and Premiere, and OBS for streaming rarely. I would love to play APEX and Valorant on my laptop.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? 60fps is okay. The gaming experience is not that important. I just want it to not crash or disconnect in the middle of the game.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? not really.

    EXTRA POINTS:

I would like to stream Jackbox and my Animating Sessions from time to time. So it's a plus if it is powerful enough to stream.

    And not noisy.

Thanks in advance to the people who took the time to read it.

    Mech 15: Ryzen 7 5800H + 3080 vs i7-10875H + 3070

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 05:33 PM PDT

I'm planning on buying this laptop: https://www.eluktronics.com/MECH-15-G3

However, I'm not really sure if the 500$ increase for the Ryzen 7 5800H + 3080 option is actually worth it or not. Would there be an actual noticeable boost in performance and/or would it be more future proof to make it worth it? Or would it just be better to get the 3070 one? I'm not really sure as I don't really understand laptops that much.

I'm mainly using it for gaming and school, but school is usually only coding.

Need Windows laptop for new job - finance/Excel/modeling w/ high build quality

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 03:06 PM PDT

It's been a LONG time since I purchased a Windows/PC laptop. Over the last decade+ it's always been Apple for me, but I need a Windows laptop for my new job. I don't even know where to begin - what to look for in a processor (AMD vs Intel?), which manufacturers are best build quality, etc.

    • **Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:*\* <$2000 USD, purchasing in USA.
    • **Are you open to refurbs/used?*\* Sure, why not.
    • **How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?*\* I value build quality, performance, and battery life equally. I'll likely be traveling, so good battery quality is valuable. I'm a current Apple user, and the thing I've historically disliked about non-Apple laptops is that the build quality doesn't compare - so I want something that feels sturdy, high-quality, etc. Performance is necessary in that it runs Excel well.
    • **How important is weight and thinness to you?*\* Important - I currently use a Macbook Air and I don't want something too much larger.
    • **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.*\* <14"
    • **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.*\* No - mainly Excel. Might need to do some video editing/photo editing, but that won't be the main use.
    • **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?*\* N/A
    • **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?*\* Lightweight, high build quality, finger-print reader is a nice to have. Would like to have >32gb RAM.
    • **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.*\* Think that covers it!

[suggestion] Laptop as a desktop $1200 USD flexible

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 08:56 PM PDT

    Hey all,

Looking for a laptop that I would be mainly using as a desktop with multiple monitors for work, school(accounting) and light gaming (league of legends). Portability is not important but performance is and preferably a bigger screen as well. I usually don't work while traveling but I would to have the option to. I have a few desktop options that will link below. I would like to know what I would be losing out on tech wise and what that means to performance and gaming capabilities. I still will be looking for a nice monitor to pair with my setup and a keyboard mouse, a few other things. So I would like to stay around $2000 for the whole setup.

    Desktop options: https://www.walmart.com/ip/CYBERPOWERPC-Gamer-Master-GMA3088W-w-AMD-Ryzen-7-3700X-3-6GHz-CPU-16GB-DDR4-NVIDIA-GeForce-RTX-3060-12GB-240GB-SSD-1TB-HDD-802-11AC-WiFi-Win-10-Home-/718254074 Or https://www.bestbuy.com/site/cyberpowerpc-gamer-supreme-gaming-desktop-amd-ryzen-7-3700x-16gb-memory-nvidia-geforce-rtx-3070-1tb-ssd-white/6434646.p?skuId=6434646

Ryzen seems to be the go to right now with 16gb and I have seen some very similar builds to the ones above just using ryzen 5 for slightly less. So I'm flexible, really would like to know if all this is needed and how do laptops compare when it comes to using it.

[USA] Basic use laptop under $800. Everyday Mom stuff

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 02:53 PM PDT

I am searching for a laptop for basic everyday type things that I can't accomplish on my phone. Sometimes "desktop mode" on my android just doesn't cut it. I'm a middle aged mom trying to help her kids prep for college and reading some of this stuff is brutal on a small screen. The last time I played laptop games it was Sims 3 and Rollercoaster Tycoon, so I don't need anything fancy for gaming. I'm used to Windows and my youngest son's chromebook frustrates me when it doesn't do what I think it should (hence why I'm looking to buy my own laptop). Email, banking, reddit, recipes, shopping. Reading all this dang fafsa and college stuff.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

$800 USD. I was thinking 600 but after looking online, I might need to up the budget. Obviously I'd prefer to spend less.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

Not really unless it's a great deal.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Battery first, performance next, eh on everything else.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

I have slight nerve damage in my left arm and have trouble lifting things sometimes. I'd like to keep it under 4 pounds, thinness doesn't matter as much as weight. Like if it's boxy but light, cool.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    14-16 inches

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Not really. Basic photo editing with paint to make images for subs I mod.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

nope, I have a nintendo switch for gaming.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

good keyboard! My son had an acer inspire and the keys fell off within 6 months. Replacing it was a pain in the ass. I have touchscreen on my work laptop so I'm probably used to it, but it's not a must have. I hate the touchpad and will end up disabling it.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I was laid off from HP years back. They can suck it. Please do not suggest anything made by them. Oh and I hate loud fans. My work laptop makes fan noise all day and it drives me crazy.

    Thank you for any help!

Help me choose between these laptops

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 08:45 PM PDT

I live in a third world country, so my laptop choice is limited. I want to know which one of these 3 laptops will last longer without breaking, has better build quality, and overall which one you would recommend.

    There is the

    HP Pavilion 15-ec1026ur, with the Ryzen 7 4800H, 16GB of ram, 1TB HDD, 256GB SSD and a GTX 1650Ti.

    Lenovo Legion 5 15ARH05 with the Ryzen 5 4600H, 16GB of ram, 512GB SSD and a 1650Ti

    Acer Aspire 7 A715-75G with the Core i7-9750H, 16GB of ram, 512GB SSD and a 1650

I know that by just looking at the specs the HP Pavilion is a better deal, but I wanted to ask about their build quality, because I want something that will not break after a year of use like my previous ASUS VivoBook.

    The form:

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      450 000 KZT (Kazakhstani Tenge) ~1000-1100USD
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      no
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
      Build quality
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      not that important
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Light video editing with Premiere Pro and some CPU-heavy videogames like Paradox Grand Strategies
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Hearts of Iron 4, Stellaris, or new titles with at least 1080p Medium on playable framerates (40-60FPS)
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Keyboard is pretty important, but the build quality must be the main priority.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    best well-rounded laptop for $800

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 08:38 PM PDT

it can be less than $800, my sister had https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07DCY1556/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

she liked the size and weight and that it was fast, she wants a touch-screen. she doesn't do any gaming but I don't want to completely nix the option. I just am seeing a lot of good options, and I want the best option if that's not crazy.

edit: doesn't have to be $800 can be cheaper I saw a lot that fit that criterion as well.

    Photo editing computer help...

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 08:21 PM PDT

I'm currently in need of a new computer. My current computer, after restoring factory settings is still slow and freezing at times. I've also recently been gifted Ps/Lr and do not want to attempt putting it on this computer. With all that said what do you guys/gals think is the best computer for editing photos? I'd like to do PC (no desktops) so I'm not trying to learn a new OS as well as learn photoshop. I'd also like to stay under $1000, preferably 15" screen and 100% sRGB or close to it.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      -fill here, remove dashes-
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Yes
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I'd like to have something like the Microsoft Surface but whatever would work better is preferred.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Indifferent
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      15 or close to it
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Photo editing using Adobe photoshop and lightroom
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      Touch-screen would be nice.

    Thanks for the help...

    800 USD Gaming Laptop

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 07:53 PM PDT

    • Total budget (In local currency) and country of purchase: $800 USD

    • Are you open to refurbs/used? Yes.

    • How would you prioritize form factor, build quality, performance, and battery life? Performance, battery life, build quality, and lastly form factor.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. At least 14"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming. As well as some audio editing through Audacity.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? KOTOR(Shouldn't be an issue, as I've played that on sub $300 laptops), Minecraft Java, if at all possible after upgrading, something like Jedi Fallen Order(Pretty demanding, just a wish tbh).

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A decently responsive keyboard is preferable.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Honestly, I'm hoping for something that I can upgrade a fair bit. Trying to cut the initial cost while feeding into a better machine over time. Is there anything out there within this price range with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 or better? I probably sound like an idiot, but, I'm on a budget, and I've got high hopes.

Laptop for light gaming (AMD) but battery life most important

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 09:19 AM PDT

    Hello,

I'm coming from an Acer aspire 4830TG.

    It's a 2011-2012 laptop with an i5 2 core cpu, 4gb ram

It also has an Nvidia 540m gpu. The battery is down to 52% total capacity and now lasts 1.5 hours or so. I essentially can't use it unplugged for long.

Anyway i figure i can see what's out there that y'all would recommend (used is fine honestly) something that has a video card so i can game a little bit (three letter gpu preferred because GeForce manufacturer and Linux enough said)

Ideally 8gb of ram or more but that's easy fix. Ideally SSD, but i have spare ones lying around so not a big deal.

Main thing i want: great battery life, good form factor and durable for traveling (I travel on planes for a living) a video card from the past 5 years.

For what it's worth this Acer cost me $650 10 years ago. Ideally this new/used laptop would be... $400 or less hence the option for used.
