Family Left a Ticking Timebomb on Their Computer, and I Triggered It

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 09:09 AM PDT

So I have a computer illiterate family member. You know the type: loses their desktop shortcuts because they can't perfect the dark art of double clicking, and they keep holding icons and dragging them around unintentionally. Then I get the phone call to fix it, because "You do the computer thing."

Today, I got a dreaded phone call: Their desktop background is a cherished older picture of them, and they'd like to email it to a friend. "That's fine," I think, "I'll just find where you saved it and email it for you."

Turns out, it isn't saved, apparently. The file had long since been deleted becuase the computer was "cluttered with junk," apparently, and the background image had remained unchanged. Well when I went in to try and find where it was saved... I changed their desktop background image. And I can't find the original file to restore it. (If you have a computer illiterate family member, you would already know there are no backups.)

Now I've "deleted" their cherished picture, and it's apparently all my fault. Can anyone help me find a past, deleted, background image with no backups, and save me from this fate?

    Mac vs Windows?

    Switching from Windows to Mac

Anyone who's made the leap from windows to mac or have used both before advice would be appreciated! I'm 18 and have always has windows laptops, my current one is a 1st gen Surface Laptop and I'm going to buy a new one for university. I used to always dismiss macbooks as I'm so used to the windows system, but I hate how windows laptops get unbearably slow after even 2/3 years! Is this similar with macbook (air) or do they tend to feel 'new' for longer? Also, how do things like microsoft word run on a mac? Are they pretty much identical or are they optimised for windows? Any other things to know in general if making the switch from windows to mac would be really appreciated (file system etc) thanks!

Any way to have Dark Task Manager?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 05:36 AM PDT

Is there any way to have a dark Task Manager. I really love some pictures I saw of dark Task Manager made with UltraX Theme patcher. Without adding a custom there can I have a dark Task Manager. Because I don't really love to have these kinda applications that alter system files. Any open source software or something like that?

News and Interests not showing up after update?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 05:30 AM PDT

Just finished installing the feature update preview (am now on build 19042.964) and I don't have the news and interests feature available.

The option isn't there when I right-click on the task bar.
I looked at the group policy editor, set the feature to enabled there.
Went into the registry, manually created keys for it there as well (see attached pic)

Still nothing. Is the feature region-locked even if it's technically installed? Is it being enabled in waves? Does it have some weird dependencies that it will completely prevent it from even appearing as an option unless turned on? (i have a bunch of privacy-related settings disabled, such as location)

    Anybody else experiencing this?

Using old versions of Windows in 2021 is a bad choice?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 07:08 AM PDT

Hey guys. So, I have this PC since 2018, and it came with W10 pre-installed. I only use it for studying and playing a few games which are not too demanding, like Stardew Valley or The Sims 4/3/2.

When I'm playing games, it all works pretty right, no glitches or bugs whatsoever. But for daily use, it became a headache to use. I can't even open too many programs at the same time, because it freezes up. Every single day, I have to open Task Manager to close something because it stops working. I have difficult watching my online classes on Google Meet, or opening e-mails at the Email standard program.

I cogitated changing for Windows Vista Ultimate or Windows 7 (Windows 8 was also a torture) but my friends advised me not to do it, because of ransomware and viruses. Actually, my biggest fear is not having compatible programs tbh. But anyways, I know they're partially right, even though I'm not used to access dangerous websites or shopping online. Is it a bad choice to change for an old OS? I would probably have a better experience... but... huh... is that a big risk? How outdated these OS are?

Edit: 500GB ROM, 4GB RAM, Intel HD Graphics, Intel Celeron

[HELP] Can I delete those folders? What are those files? Are they failed OS update files? Can I delete them?

[HELP] Can I delete those folders? What are those files? Are they failed OS update files? Can I delete them?

Hi everyone! I have a very small SSD (64/68GB can't remember now, it's by Intel and from 2013) and it's always full and I'm trying to clean it.

In the local disk there are those folders (the one marked in red with Paint, sorry for the bad job):

    https://preview.redd.it/dnm1byate5w61.png?width=458&format=png&auto=webp&s=2d6e772f440ab479fa45db18ba394d39c7657ac2

    The folders contains those files:

As far as I understood they're files from failed Windows updates.

I need to free some space in my SSD, and I'd like to update to Windows 10 but I built my PC in 2013 and I'm working to get a new PC, since mine is old and full of problem, both software and hardware.

Thanks everyone, I hope I can delete those criptic garbage folders.

Sorry for the grammar but English isn't my first language and I'm pretty tired.

Do you think I can update to W10 with my old PC? Or should I wait? Afterall it was released only 2 years after I've built my computer, is it better than Windows 7 Ultimate?

    Thanks everyone in advance.

Launch program as admin at startup?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 10:10 AM PDT

is there anyway to launch a program as admin at startup without having to confirm the user account control?

The last 2 Nvidia drivers have broken my monitoring software and the software has to be launched as admin now to take control of the Nvidia hardware. So basically, I'm looking for a way to choose a program that will run as admin without displaying UAC.

I have tried to accomplish this in Task Scheduler. Couldnt get it to work. I'm wondering if there is a batch or command I could set to run. Thoughts?

I want to reinstall Windows 10 on a SSD on my laptop while keeping it activated

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 08:51 AM PDT

Hello I am going to buy a Sata SSD to store the OS and some programs on my laptop, i settled on Kingston A400 for that.

I want to do a clean install of Windows 10 on the SSD since a new install is better than cloning the OS to the new drive, but I'm a bit concerned about the activation key.

Can i use the same key to activate Windows after i install it on the SSD? If yes then how?

Suspended processes get unuspended when I close my laptop

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 08:30 AM PDT

I want to be able to suspend an app and have it not be unsuspended until I tell it to, even if I close my laptop. I'm using the resource manager built into Windows 10. Is there any way I can get around this problem? Thanks!
