My laptops battery life is trash

    Posted: 02 Mar 2021 07:27 AM PST

My laptop is under a year old and it's battery life is already horrible. I left it on my table for about an hour with the screen closed and it went from 80% to 7%. I did have a few games I left running on it but I don't think that should have mattered. Is that normal?

Gaming Laptop for Offline gaming while away with work

    Posted: 02 Mar 2021 04:14 AM PST

Hello, I'm sure this is the correct disc to help, I am a little clueless when it comes to computer/laptop specs.

So the backstory is I'm in the Military, fly out the country for 12 weeks at a time then come back home for 4 weeks so would like a laptop for mainly offline gaming while I am away as a laptop is easier to carry around opposed to a Tv and console I feel.

I have been looking for a little while without much luck on deciding, I don't really know what I am looking at. I found this article Best gaming laptops for 2021 | PC Gamer A bunch of them look really good, but I can't figure out which one exactly to pick. I don't even how much to pay, £1000 seems like a good figure however I wouldn't mind paying more if it will last longer until I need to upgrade to the latest specs.

I feel like this is all the information I need to post, I don't exactly know what games I will be playing although on console I like sandbox games, shooters and the odd story line.,

    Thankyou in Advance.

    Help with a computer?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2021 08:54 AM PST

I know nothing about gaming computers/laptops/etc, but I'm looking to get a decent laptop for like $800. Nothing super crazy, just to relax and play games every once in a while plus doing the occasional schoolwork on. Any suggestions?

Does the Samsung 970 EVO Plus heat up too much? (Thinkpad T480)

    Posted: 02 Mar 2021 10:46 AM PST

I've bought a Thinkpad T480 and I'm planning on substituting the current HDD with either a Samsung 860 EVO (SATA) or a 970 EVO (NVMe). Should I worry about the later one in terms of heat? I know the T480 is only x2NVMe and not x4 as the 970 would need to manifest full speed, but people on reddit say it's faster than the 860 anyways. What should I do?

Can I Safely Remove a Keyboard Key, Clean Under it, Then Attach It Back?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2021 06:25 AM PST

I have an MSI Laptop (GF72 8RD) like this one:

    https://www.laptoparena.net/images/MSI_Gaming_GF72_8RD-031UK_9S7-179F32-031_image_2.jpg

So the keyboard is part of the computer.

I noticed a lot of dust and hair under most of the keyboard keys, so I was wondering If I can remove each key, clean under it, then attach it back? or could it be if I removed the key I can't get put it back like it was? I there some kind of instructions tutorial to do this?

I was looking to upgrade. I want to try the new apple macbooks but I'm waiting for some more time to pass, until more apps become compatible. should I try something new or stick with apple? what laptops would you recommend and why?

Battery Charge Capacity higher than Designed Capacity?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2021 09:46 AM PST

    Hello everyone,

I've been having a range of issues with my Razer Blade laptop recently. Basically, it only really works when plugged in (getting worse) and once plugged out it displays 100% charge with 40 hours remaining but then proceeds to shut down after 1-2 mins of usage. It always sends me into automatic repair when this happens.

I made a battery report which shows extremely unrealistic values for my battery at the fully charged capacity somewhere around 700,000.

For some reason I felt like it was a software issue but I've tied updating and uninstalling all the drivers etc etc nothing worked. Would a battery change help out with anything? The cable doesn't always charge once it's put in the port, it always depends on how it's put in. Tried with multiple cables as well, could the port be the issue?

Any help would be greatly appreciated in advance

Hi all, I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to picking out a laptop. Please help!

    Posted: 02 Mar 2021 09:34 AM PST

Skip to the TL;DR at the bottom of you don't feel like reading all this :)

Believe it or not, I am a Gen Z who isn't tech savvy. I have no idea how to pick out a good laptop, and I've been swindled by HP already.

Let me walk you through my laptop struggles:

When I started undergrad, I got a MacBook Air and it was the best laptop I ever had. My only complaint was the high price and how little storage it came with. Tragically, I accidentally spilled boiling hot tea on it at work and it died.

It was finals week and I needed a laptop THAT day so I drove to BestBuy and purchased the HP Envy 360. It was about $1K. When I got home I noticed the keyboard was defective (some letters just did not work). I then took the laptop back and exchanged it for another of the same kind (should have just returned it).

That laptop got me through finals week, and right outside of the exchange date (a few weeks later), it made loud fan and buzzing sounds (think of a motor running, but CONSTANTLY), the bottom would get hot, the keyboard completely stops working, sometimes the laptop does not turn on, battery life is shit, and now the laptop, which is one year old, is literally falling apart (the back panel holding the bottom of the laptop on is separating and won't go back in). I'm now worried that the entire screen is becoming unhinged. The screen also has started glitching, or half the keys on the keyboard stop working while I'm typing an essay and I look up and see gibberish on my screen.

This is the worst laptop I ever bought and I do not want to be screwed again.

I am going to school in the next year, so my needs for a laptop are:

-Large storage (min 500GB, 1T would be ideal)

-Fast for surfing the web for research

    -RELIABLE

But I do not know anything about memory or RAM or processors, graphics cards, etc. I do not know what I should be looking for.

TL;DR: I have not had the best luck with laptops. I'm going to law school and looking for something fast, reliable, and a good amount of storage without completely breaking the bank. Some people have recommended Surface Pros, Lenovo Think Pads or Yoga, and Acer Swift for my needs, but please give me some tips for research or what else I should be looking for, or even other models you recommend.

    Thank you!

    Laptop Recommendations Wanted

    Posted: 02 Mar 2021 09:31 AM PST

I'm going to be buying a new laptop this summer before the next school year. I'm an engineering student and I'll be using my computer for a lot of programming and other software eng related things.

I want a Windows computer (although I like Mac, Windows just has better compatibility with the programs I'm going to be using).

Some things [I think] I need in a laptop:

    -16 GB Ram

-i7 or AMD Ryzen equivalent (I hear Ryzen's are better)

    -At least 15 inch screen

    Some things I want:

    -Good battery life

    -Very small bezels

-Nice looking laptop (metal chassis, decently thin, backlit keyboard)

I like the XPS, but my problem with those are that they don't come without a graphics card, and I really don't need fancy graphics (as I don't game or do intense image/ video editing). They also don't have AMD processors, which I believe worsens the battery life. I'm wondering if the 11th gen Intels are on par with AMD (I probably won't notice minor performance improvements, but I would notice overheating/ battery discharge). Also, are the 12th gen Intels supposed to be significantly better and will anything be available with those come fall?

Currently, I have a 4+ year old Asus and I am really impressed by how it's held up. Although the battery is quite shitty now, it performs as well as the day I got it for simple tasks (like streaming video and browsing internet), but once I start doing heavy work, it deteriorates (which is not Asus' problem, it's just too much for the 7th gen i5 + 8 GB ram to handle).

Let me know what I should look out for! Thanks!

    Upgrading/Repairing Hardware

    Posted: 02 Mar 2021 09:08 AM PST

I have an old laptop thats been hanging out in my closet for the past couple years. It's an old HP Envy model that started to have issues with the power supply (laptop wouldn't charge, would only remain on so long as it was constantly plugged in, eventually that even stopped working). Never really had a real use for it and since I've had a gaming desktop, it's sat collecting dust.

Recently interested in refurbishing this thing into working condition to start using this as my programming laptop.

My question is, anyone have any experience or resources for laptop repairing or upgrading? I know it's not done as often because of hardware accessibility restrictions. Was really just thinking of upgrading the graphics card, replacing the hard drive, and resolving the power supply issue.

I know some of the hardware will be harder to change out or near impossible. I've been told the GPU might be one of these pieces in question. I would honestly be okay with gutting the whole thing and just recycling the shell if that's a better approach.

    Any recommendations?
